[Q] No multitasking & stopping home screen - G3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys!
I have some problem and I'm trying to find some answers but so far no success.
If you guys can't help me then nobody else!
So I have 2 problems and in my opinion they are connected.
The first is that my home screen is closing (stopping?) and opening (redrawing?) itself almost all the time - after YouTube, Chrome, even after closing this forum! Obviously not all the times, but really frequently - it's getting REALLY annoying now. I'm trying Nova launcher now but it's still happening - not that often though, but still.
My other problem is that I have literally no multitasking. If I open my chat app (Whatsapp or Line) and go to Chrome to check out a webpage after I go back to the chat application it had to reboot - like I opened it for the first time! Same thing is happening with Chrome when I check out message for example. For reference I tried out my dad's cheap (compared to G3) phone and it had 4 apps running at the same time (Camera, Chrome, Line and even a game) and all of them was working! Not even one had to restart when I was switching between them...
What do you think - is it normal? (Obviously I'm using the 2/16 version - I was fooled by LG when they said G3 is optimized for 2gb...)
What can I do? Is there anything to do? (Except waiting for a miracle OR update. )
Thanks,
Wikh

Sounds like you're running out of RAM and apps are closing (normal for Android if it runs out of memory).
The G3 is a resource hog.

Do you have the 3/32 or 2/16model?

Yeah, I know but I jut can't believe that this is normal. It supposed be one of the best smartphone. :cyclops:
That's why it would be nice to know a few reference - and how could I deal with it - without selling it and buying a 3/32 version... :silly:

2/16 But I've been told that the G3 is made for 2gb of ram and 3 is only a nice extra that wont affect anything. :crying:

try flashing the 10J firmware from the kdz thread in general it reduces system ram usage a bit
also maybe install greenify and use the nonroot modus to kill apps that you don't use I never went above 2.2gb of rams so that is in your ballpark

quick and easy fix.
Don't listen Or believe anyone who tells you that The 16gb/2gb ram version Is any less powerful than it's 3gb ram variant. LG isn't playing around when it tells you that Both versions of the phones are equal.
Coming to the fix : you would've discovered it by now but if not, here goes..
Turn on developer mode by hitting build number under software, them just scroll down in developer options to turn down animation scales to half or completely shut them down.
Doing this will bring true real time multitasking on your 16gb/2gb g3. The additional ram on the variant is nothing but a novelty. 2Gb ram is more than enough for almost anything you'll throw to your g3.

[Q] Anyone else notice some lag after the first few days? need help if you have!

So i've only had the phone for a few days and started noticing lag mainly in the settings yesterday.
It was buttery smooth the first few days until yesterday. I'll try to create a clear description of what is happening.
Everything in terms of hitting applications, sliding/switching pages, and browsers seems smooth but I'm getting doubts since settings have started lagging. So as of now, the settings menu is where I really notice the problem. What happens is I would press any of the choices such as display, sound, storage, etc and it would light up blue as a sign that I pressed it. Basically, the blue lighting stutters/lags as it turns into a deeper color and fades away proving that there is some lag. That itself is very irritating on such a powerful phone. The page also lags a bit as it's opening so it's obvious that it does lag. I don't understand why something as simple as settings might be causing this?
have any of you guys noticed this? I tried clearing ram, restarting phone, messing with dev options by changing animation and something else to .5x while enabling "force GPU rendering." I'm running stock touchwiz on baseband T889UVALJ1 if that helps. Keep in mind i'm not really tech savvy so try to suggest things in an easy to understand way please.
Any help is greatly appreciated and I hope you guys can help me fix my problem!
Been using it for the past 1 month plus and I do not have any lagging issues. I am on stock rom as well.
No lag either, been using the Note 2 for 2 months now. Check your apps with BetterBatteryStatts (too many backgroundservices runing).
No lag either. Did u install some crappy apps that run backstage

Thanks for the replies so far and before I spend some money on apps or what not, is there any way I can post a 5 second animation of what is happening? Kind of like a 5 second gif of my screen? A mix of a screenshot and video so like a screen vid? Are there are any apps that can do that(preferably free). I'll try to find an app that can do that in the meantime and will edit if I find something useful.
Edit: No idea what this is or how it ended up on my phone but could this be the culprit? https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tgrape.android.radar
People say it's bloatware and s-suggest from samsung but i'm not sure why it would be shown as an app on the play store website
I have noticed the phone can lag a bit if you have a heavy live wallpaper running.
Just sharing my thoughts on this
did you modify anything? no lags on my N2.
normally i'd say if you leave your phone on for a few days in a row, clear the memory every once in a while (press and hold home, go task manager, ram tab, clear memory) or reboot it, just so you dont have anything residual in your ram.
when android sees that you have 2gb of ram, it doesnt auto kill as many apps as it would if you were to have only 1gb of ram (my note 1 autokilled sooooooo frequently that it was annoying), so your ram ends up getting filled with some apps that you only used once in a while.

I wrote that I tried clearing ram and restarting phone but it didn't help. Thanks for trying though
Yeah, I get a bit of lag here and there, specially if I haven't cleared running/background apps in a while.
I just do it from the task manager, and also check out what apps are using the most battery, and possibly therefore are some of the likely culprits.
I actually use this app called Carat, which is an "Energy bug detector app" (whatever that means), but it helps identify apps that are draining the battery, and incidentally, partially contributing to the lag.
Also obvious thing like live wallpapers or touchwiz in general (including all the 'special' Samsung features like smart rotate, smart stay, smart motion) probably add to it to. Nova launcher and a static wallpaper might help.
I'll try to post a video sometime soon showing the lag. It's not serious lag, but it does stutter and lag a decent amount compared to my first few days which is what sucks.

You can try enabling Force GPU rendering in developers options. That usually helps with that, or at least it seemed to in my case. Report back if it actually helped
quick update:
I found a vid and my lag basically looks like this http://youtu.be/0qyijcTeHcU?t=2m27s
Look at when he clicks on display, there is clearly some lag even if it is half a second - 1 second. I'm almost certain that my lag is even worse than that, but not by too much. It's just a pain in the ass after the first few days. Would flashing a custom rom like jedi X 7.2 help out with this since it's running a bravia engine?

New, fresh device - Extremely laggy homescreen

So I have got here a brand new LG G3 with hardly any apps installed. Even then, the default LG Home UI lags terribly. It keeps on redrawing and refreshing itself every time I exit an app and enter the homescreen. Is there a way to fix this? Thanks!

Don't panic , try to make a quick factory reset for your device it should solve the problem , if not and you don't want to waste more time by sending it back to the warranty , u can flash a new stock rom using either tot file or kdz , u can find both of the ways in one thread here .
keep us updated
I was about to complain about the same. I think 2gb/ 16 gb version have this launcher redrawing thing. But totally unprofessional approach for ui and launcher ram management. This is happening since d85520a what a shame.
Or, simply install Nova Launcher and have a quicker launcher with way more options as well. Win - win.
And yes, most if not all LG widgets will not work
cough LG cough. it's their launcher, don't stress about lag sir.
i'd also recommend nova launcher. :good:

A5 Oreo weird animation performance

Everyone is talking about the better UI fluidity since Oreo update. I also was thinking that the moment I updated the phone and performed the factory reset. It was amazing at the beginning.
However, after a few minutes of usage (I don't use any accesibility services, and just a few background processes Wa,snap, insta,fb lite) the animations became laggy: pulling notification drawer, opening apps (especially for multitasking), scrolling.. it looks like an fps drop.. but it isn't really. Like I'm using the J3 or J5...
It's not that bad, but it's irritating me since MM and N were noticeably smoother. It was like this before & after factory reset.
Sorry for long post, does anyone have the same problem? Any ideas what to do?

I updated it via OTA. Knox and the warranty are important to me.
Are your animations perfectly smooth even after few days? They weren't pefect before, but now they are sometimes good and sometimes not.
I'm using oreo too but I don't experience such problems. Unfortunately, I don't know what your problem could be too. ☹ Maybe you could observe your CPU load & RAM usage when the phone starts lagging and post them here?

Okay so these are the same apps I was using since MM. However I don't know how to post CPU usage.
The problem is I feel like the phone isn't optimised like before. It's responsive and it's the same speed, but animations look bad. They usually aren't smooth enough and for example opening-closing instagram stories is like someone stabbing me. Can anyone check that who's using IG?
RAM usage seems to be normal. For the cpu usage you have to download a separate app e.g. AIDA64.
As far as I understand, the lagging appears everywhere, not only in the Samsung related apps (launcher etc.), is that right?

Not all apps. Samsung Internet, Messaging and Youtube work perfectly. But Launcher, Transitions, Recent apps, Notification drawer, Twitter, Instagram - they have tendency to skip frames.
The CPU usage is pretty fine, half of the units are sleeping.
The phone is perfectly usable, but I definitely prefer the old reliable animations. I can't believe I'm the only one having this problem.. :crying:
My biggest concern about buying Samsung was the fluidity since I was coming from Sony and it was pretty fine until now..I sometimes feel like having an OCD using the oreo firmware

I flashed it and wiped data. It's literally the same. Like I did nothing at all. The same applications tend to skip frames, and I still don't know if all phones are like this or not. If anoyone can also check whether Twitter swiping tabs is laggy on Oreo or Instagram closing stories - I'd be thankful.

It doesn't seem a software issue now. No, the a5 2017 devices do not tend to have those issues, all the A 2017 series are known by the excellent performance. Take it to warranty and hear what they have to say about that, it is not common for that to happen.

Not a chance, you may end up hard bricking your device as a downgrade with Samsung since Nougat is not being possible. Also your knox could be tripped, reason why I suggested to go to warranty. If hardware is ok, but software is not functioning, you may get a replacement or they need to do something about that.

Yup I tried that already on MM, it makes things worse, not for my phone but for all cause this phone isnt s series and can't handle fast animations, it can barely make these 1x smooth. 1.5x works more smooth but it's just too long.?

Not really but I think it got better. Try disabling every backup and sync option on Samsung cloud. If you dont need it at all you can disable/uninstall it via ADB - my phone feels better after I unchecked all the sync and backup options.
In Secure folder go to Apps and disable Google play services, Google play store and everything you can when not in use.
I also use Brevent. You can look it up - it uses adb permission to prevent chosen apps from running in the background. It's a great tool.
All this should help but won't fix some of the poorly optimized animations.
I have the same problem.
Anyone can solve it?

How to prevent Android from killing apps?

So, I have this issue, where most of my apps can't stay in recent apps overnight. They all get killed, all but 5 I have noticed. I did the battery optimization thing for all apps I use on a daily basis. I have edited build.prop file and added sys.keep_app_1=com.whatsapp and so on for the rest of my apps. I also did that in the local.prop file. None of it worked. How to prevent my phone from killing apps overnight?

If you are rooted you might try the app LSpeed and use one of the build in RAM profiles.
I am rooted. OK, I will try it. Thanks. It shuts my app very VERY aggressively. For instance, I was watching some youtube video yesterday, and in the other app I was searching for some products and was going back and forth between YouTube and Google Chrome, and every couple of times it restarted YouTube app, even though I was using it 2 minutes ago.

Well, then you probably need a custom rom. Android One is known to be optimized for dumping non needed tasks. You could try to disable battery optimizing for the apps you would like to stay alive.
Tried that too, didn't work.
My previous phone was 2Gb running android 6. Now i have a mi a2 life 4Gb and it is OK except for 2 games.
Apparently there's some AI that learns what you use but after many weeks no change.
Most apps open pretty fast. It's only these 2 games that I run daily. Annoying to have to wait for them especially since the old phone was able to keep them cached.
I tried the low-memory config (magisk module) but it didn't help. I guess android has changed its algorithm. I'm resigned to it.
It's insane. What's the point of having 4, 6, 8 or 10GB of ram if you can't use it?!
Connect it to a monitor, install Taskbar app and SecondScreen app, enable Freeform windows and turn your phone into a mediocre PC. Assuming you can get all the resources back from OS's hidden service threads of course.

Android 10 has a known problem. Rebooting helps. For how long seems to vary. I get a week or so, some people only get a day.
I had the same problem when I was unrooted during the Android 10 update crash. After rooting and installing Lspeed again, Android is not killing apps anymore as I set these settings

LG G7 annoying RAM problem.

It seems to happen that when my G7 Thinq has no more free RAM left, kills running apps like Spotify, Play Music(not any more), Netflix and others. It kills them even I started recently, or I am listening to music, or I am using Maps while driving or streaming Netflix to Chromecast. So it makes no possible to use these apps normally. I am thinking of buying a new phone just because of that. Does anyone know a solution? I tried being updated, hard reset and uninstalling the apps that more RAM consume.

Some carriers have preinstalled apps like games and apps , some of them are very heavy on resources .
Are you using pie or android 10 ? May I suggest trying the smart doctor app , I usually advice against the use of the apps , but this looks like some background process that refuses to let go , run the smart doctor app , Is built in to the phone , after that close all the apps from the recent apps screen , reboot the phone and see if that helps .
If it persist , would you mind upload a screenshot of the ram usage ? It may give us a clue about whats happening .
