On the occasion, my phone acts all wonky. This morning it was stuck on a boot loop for quite some time, but it got fixed. This morning it was plugged in and it constantly shut down and rebooted for a few hours. Sometimes when it's plugged in the touch screen is all wonky, and I can't do anything. I'm due for an upgrade some time near my birthday, but 6 days is a while to wait with a badly working phone. This morning I tried to write down some of my friends numbers because I figured this phone was on its last legs, but I only got 1 number before the phone shut down. Then I got another number, but that was it. It shut down again so I plugged it in. I drop my phone a lot too, and it recently started doing this thing where when it gets dropped, it turns off. Usually it would turn on again by itself, but one time it didn't. My dad had to hold the lock button for a few minutes just to boot it up. I might get an otterbox case for my next phone, and it's probably gonna be either another HTC or an iPhone. Also, what can I do for the time being to help keep my phone as OK as it's gonna get? Thank you in advance.
Best thing to do? Don't drop your phone. I had a Galaxy SIII and every time it had a slight shake, the display would freeze and go all fuzzy. The issue was a loose display cable that wobbled a lot. You may want to check your phone for any damaged/loose cables since it's been dropped too many times.

I had thought I was one of the many SOD sufferers out there, but I'm not 100% sure now based on the symptoms that are happening with my phone versus others, so I wanted to create a new thread and just let you know what happened to me (and what is occurring right now).
I ordered my TP2 the day it was released through T-Mobile. I'd gone two or three weeks without having any issues. I didn't really install too many CABs on there (with the exception of updating Bing, mobile Netflix, Astraware Solitaire, the battery increment fix, and TouchLockPro).
I put the phone on the charger one night, and the next morning, I clicked the Power button to unlock it. It vibrated, indicating it was powering on (versus just unlocking). I thought, Okay, no big deal. Maybe I shut it off by accident.
The next day, it was off the charger, and I clicked on the Power button to unlock, and it wouldn't turn on at all. (This is where my issue seems to differ from the SOD sufferers... their phones are making noise and actually functioning, but their screens are black, so they can't really do anything with the phone until they reset.)
I panicked, but shoved the phone back on the charger. Thought maybe the battery was dead (though I knew the last I looked at it, it was at 82%). Nothing happened. The light did not light up to indicate it was charging or fully charged.
I took the phone off the charger and pressed the Power button again. The red light flickered off and on, but nothing.
I plugged it back into the charger. Kept pressing the power button. Nothing. Then suddenly it turned on. It worked fine.
This happened maybe one more time before I left for vacation two weeks ago. The phone seemed to work just fine until about two days into my vacation. Then that started happening again.
But this time, it was worse. The phone would turn back on, and as soon as it got to the passcode screen to log into the phone, it would shut off. Sometimes, it'd let me get two numbers in, but most of the time, I couldn't even get one digit in before it shut off.
This would happen about six times in a row, and then the phone would just flat out not turn on for an hour or so.
As the vacation wore on (it was tiring, as our itinerary was on our phone, so there were times we didn't know where we needed to be because I couldn't get the phone on... I had a hard copy in the room, but that would mean having to travel back to the room to get it, losing an hour or two, so it wasn't worth it), it started to get worse. More times of getting to the passcode screen. More times of it shutting off before I could enter the number. Then it got to the point where I couldn't turn it on for four or five hours at a time.
No matter what I tried, the phone continued to "die". Everything that seemed to work turned out to be a coincidence.
What I tried:
1. Reset button.
2. Pulling the battery out.
3. Pulling the SD out.
4. Pulling the SIM out. (Would boot up the phone sans SIM. Then put it back in and boot it up again. I THOUGHT this worked, as I went from last Wednesday to yesterday with it working, but alas, it occurred again, even without the SIM in).
5. There were times I even squeezed the phone a certain way because it seemed like the phone responded more when I held it tighter.
6. I was wary that something I installed (like TouchLockPro) was causing the problem, so I upgraded to latest version, still occurred, then removed.
7. Believe me, there was a ridiculous number of OTHER bizarre things I tried (not including a TP2 voodoo doll), but I'm too embarrassed to mention those!
Outside of formatting the phone, I had exhausted all of the possibilities. I even logged on here while I was away to find out if anything had changed with SOD, and it seemed like nothing new occurred.
I had had it when the problem started again yesterday, so I went to a local T-Mobile retailer. Imagine their surprise! The battery was swapped out, and that didn't change anything. Removed the SIM, removed the SD, it occurred over and over again (which was great! I was actually able to prove the issue).
The man I showed it to called Support, and Support was dumbfounded too, so T-Mobile is replacing the phone. I should have it in a few days.
After all that, the phone came back last night. I know it'll die sooner or later, so it's best I'm getting a new one.
I think I probably would have been fine about this experience except it occurred while I was on vacation. Like I said, it had our itinerary. It was our gateway to the pets at home (texts, emails, pictures). It was really our only connection to the outside world. Granted, when you're on vacation, you don't want that, but I definitely want to know our pets are still alive! I also like to know where I'm supposed to eat! It was definitely a black cloud over our trip. (Thank you, though, to xda-developers, for keeping me sane when I DID have access!)
I am still pretty sure it's hardware, based on everything I've done, read, and seen over the past couple weeks. I was hesitant about setting up the phone the way I have it now, but I need to prove to myself that it's faulty hardware first before blaming applications.
But I wanted to share my story (albeit long) with everyone out there. People may be having the same issue but don't want to post, so if you are, you're not alone!
So...my girlfriend's galaxy nexus started randomly shutting off in the past few weeks..it was completely stock..so i decided to root it, change the kernel, ROM and baseband...
However, it still does it with no particular pattern..the only consistent thing is that it seems to happen when we're out of the house..not turning on or off any particular wireless service like wifi Bluetooth etc...i even tried tapping on the back a few times like some other forums suggested...but that didn't recreate the problem..so I'd really be happy to hear any troubleshooting/suggestions/etc..

heat? is it getting hot? the phone has a safety to shut odd when the cpu temp reaches 110C. but i find it hard to imagine that it reaches 110C just sitting there(unless its plugged in, sitting in a non ventilated area).
If it's doing that and its stock and unrooted then you need to take it back
forgot to remind you to return to stock & locked before taking it back....if you choose to do so

Yeah...i don't think it gets that hot
The phone is just usually in the car..and I've had the chance to hold it right after it shuts off..i wonder if taking the case off..in case, like you said, ventilation might be the problem..

Definitely..the root toolkit helps and i would able to flash a stock image and relock the phone..
just an extra bit of info in case someone googled/searched for this same problem and fell on this forum...
because after my searches, everyone that has had the same problem doesn't seem to have an answer...and now my phone, who did it a few times in the first few months...now has started to do it almost consistently...
randomly when i leave the house, it just goes to sleep and then the phone is turned off
the phone is NOT hot and it's literally minutes of being in the car or going for a walk, without bluetooth or gps or wifi on...and even when it is, sometimes it will still turn off
no pattern at all...both rooted and not, stock rom and not...stock kernel and not (have tried stock, james bond, and trinity so far)...
i'm going to try uping the min frequency and different governors to see what happens...
i will keep this thread updated
Try to see what happens if you hold the phone screen up and drop it 1 or 2 inches.
I am currently on my 5th Galaxy Nexus from Verizon. Phone 3 and 5 had a problem of turning off in my pocket. Almost every time I took the phone out is was off. I finally discovered that any jarring movement turns the phone off. If I did anything more then gently place it on the counter the phones would shut off. This occurs with the standard battery and back and the slim extended battery and battery back. The phone is inside a Seidio Convert case and this still occurs.

it seems like there's a good chance that's what's happening...as a fresh boot/install of any rom, including stock, and any kernel, any radio, all cause it to randomly shut down. but i noticed if it's NOT in my pocket and i hold it in my hand it almost never ever shuts down...so i'm thinking this is the problem...will keep this updated..thanks
I'm on my 4th Nexus because of "randomly" shutting down
As much as I love my rooted Nexus (4.1.1 ) full_toro_userdebug, after a couple of weeks, each phone has been shutting off randomly in my pocket or just jarring it in any way. I finally seemed to have fixed it by putting a small block of tissue paper the size of the battery between the case back and the battery.
It has allowed me to drop it from an inch or two above a wood table as drop it....It is 24 hours now. I will update with any change.

Any updates from you? I am having the same problem in that my screen will turn off and I can't get it to turn back on without pulling the battery. I can tell the phone is still on because LED notifications will continue to blink but the power button doesn't do anything.
Interestingly I've noticed lately that after I pull the battery and restart the phone, it seems to reset the battery stats. For example, tonight my phone has been off the charger for about 2 hours but after I just had to pull the battery, it booted back up and battery stats say it's been on battery for 24 minutes only.
Anyone else experiencing anything similar?

had this problem for several weeks: as long as i used the phone everything went fine but when i put it to sleep and stuff it in my pocket it shut itself down every second or third time.
your tipp with the tissue paper did the trick for me, no shutdown in the last five hours. thanks!
Has anyone found the reason for this happening? first time in eight months, my nexus turned down. first few turning offs phone has been hot and battery normal (70 ,80%). the last time the phone was cold and empty battery (although it was full). i am on custom rom (AOKP).

I suspect the phone is turning itself off because of a bad battery connection. I've had my GN for several months and it has just started turning itself off whenever it is in my pocket, and occasionally when I'm holding it. It all began after about a 4 foot drop which caused no visible damage. Reseating the battery appears to help. I hope it's this simple for everyone else.

i do not think that the battery connection is here a problem... when the phone was ˝off˝ i tried to call myself from mothers phone and everything was normal (in speaker of her phone it was ringing), but my phone was dead... nothing..
so i came to the conclusion that the phone is not exactly turned off, but the screen is and the power button does not work also. that is why i cant ˝turn on˝ my phone.
looks like the phone is in some kind of standby, but i dont know why this happens, maybe it is rom issue... i switched from AOKP to CM10 and so far (4 days) the phone has not been turned off by itself.
battery connection for me

I agree with the battery connection guess. I had the same problem of it turning off randomly and it hasn't happened to me since I cleaned off the connectors on both the battery and the phone. Good luck to everyone else!

do you also have dream scene enabled? i have noticed that when i have my nexus plugged in and the dream scene is on that it is hard to get it just to the main passcode screen upon hitting power button.
now the phone just randomly turns off , while in the middle of charging sitting completely still on my desk.
wtf is going on with this phone?
I had this issue when I first got the GN.
Unfortunately, I think it is a permanent hardware issue (at least it was for me). Not due to software/firmware or anything like that. I would get random reboots, sometimes once a week, sometimes twice a day.
I finally had to make use of the warranty and send it into verizon. I got a new one, and it works great! Not a single random shutdown or reboot.
Two weeks ago my galaxy just stopped working. it was at a decent battery; just stopped. I tried charging it but the phone would vibrate. phone would come on, then shut off. I tried it multiple times and same result; a few times the phone would make it to the samsung startup animation, sometimes it would just flash the samsung logo, once it compleley got to my screen start before shutting off.
I brought my phone to get fixed. It took a whole week and the guy said my phone was just not fixable. It would work for a few hours then shut off again, according to him. I suspect he didnt work much on it though as hed rather fix phones with easy problems as mine was a tough one.
I've had to replace my phone with an iphone now, but right now, out of curiosity, I completely took my phone apart, and started using tweezers to play the power on button. The camera part just broke off (not the actual camera) but now my phone is actually charging! The red light is on, and click the main button, it shows the battery being charged. This has not happened ever since the phone broke.
Am I bricked? Is there hope for this phone??? Please tell me there is lol.
EDIT: My phone seems to have restarted! Turned it on and it's asking for my simcard what is GOING ON LOL

idont know what you did there, but it worked plus you gotta be more specific to how the phone broke and could not boot-up to screen

It just randomly shut off. It was if someone would constantly be turning the phone off as soon as I turned it on. But then I couldn't even charge the phone. No red light, no screen, nothing, just vibration. I would try to turn it on sometimes it would get to the boot up, sometimes not, sometimes nothing, just a vibrate.
I literally took tweezers and lifted the green board out from around the power on button (it's an actual tiny white button on the inside). and then it randomly started working again

Could be a power button failure. Happens somewhat often.
Could be battery related too, a cheap replacement battery could strike that off.

agree with what he said, it could be a problem with the power button or battery is not working
off topic did you really get 176Mb/s download or is it fake
if its real then was it WIFI or DATA , i have never topped 50Mb/s both wifi and data) but DATA seems to be 10x faster than my wifi
Hi guys,
I have an HTC One X+ 64GB.
My phone is kinda dead. It used to randomly switch off since the last month or so, irrespective of whether the phone was heated or no. My phone had fallen down once in-between about a fortnight ago. Even after the fall, the phone worked perfectly fine. Then on sunday, i don’t know why i downloaded the flipkart app. The phone felt slow after that, so i thought I'd uninstall it during the day but i got busy with other things and i didn’t do it. Later during the day, the phone would switch off once disconnected from the charger but it would remain powered up and functional so long as it was connected to the charger. Same was the case yesterday i.e. monday.
But last night, i.e., tuesday, before going to bed, i wanted to make sure the alarm would ring. So i set it for 2 mins later. it didn’t ring. when i connected the charger and tried switching on the phone, it just wouldn’t.
So now, it just switches on for a couple of seconds till the quietly brilliant logo screen and then switches off as soon as it reaches the home screen…battery is showing to hold a good charge. phone is not heated up either.
I tried the power button and volume down keys but before making a selection, the phone switches off. Sometimes it shows the message that battery too low to flash??
Would really appreciate some help. I don't know whether this is some internal screen connection problem or whether i need to get the factory reset done and all will be okay.
Thanks in advance!!
So for the last few months, my phone would randomly restart itself around once or twice a month. I didn't really care since it was a minor annoyance. Usually it would be when I was trying to do a bunch of things at once so I figured it might be a software problem. However, over the last two weeks or so, it has gotten worse. I usually charge my phone in the morning for about an hour while I get ready for the day. So by the time I leave the house, my phone is at 100%. What'll happen is I'll unplug it from the charger then will get about ten/fifteen minutes of uninterrupted usage before the screen goes black and the LG logo comes on. And the phone turns back on with less battery. Then, as I go to put in my knock code, it crashes again. Turns back on. Now with even less battery. This continues about five or six times until I'm left with anything from 3-15%. I can't make calls without the phone turning off, can't take pictures. Can't really do anything. However, there are no problems when the phone is charging. I can use it fine during that. I'm almost positive this is an issue with the battery (going to order a new one soon), however I just wanted to see if anyone else had this problem too and found a fix?
