I was quite a delighted owner of Nexus 7 2013 32GB, but then this NASTY issue raised its ugly head. The issue is after using tablet for some time, scrolling in various apps becomes painfully slow & jerky.
I though it could be TRIM issue despite the fact that I have more than 20GB free. I tried almost everything. I factory reset it multiple times. No help.
Then did a fresh Install of CM, still issue wasn't resolved. Factory reset it multiple times, but to no avail. Then reverted back to Stock 4.4.4 after flashing Factory image through Fastboot, but sh** happened again. Reset it, did fresh install of PA ROM, but this freaking issue just doesn't go away.
I had more than 20GB free on all occasions. I also used "Lag fix" app from Play Store, but it didn't help either. Is this a TRIM issue? Did you experience this issue at all?

Scrolling in "Fenix for Twitter, "Robird", "Talon" & Official Twitter itself is atrocious. Play Store suffers heavily too. Situation in Chrome & Gmail app is slightly better, but quite sluggish nonetheless. To be honest, any app that has list view scrolling suffers from slow framerate sluggish scrolling.
Worst part is it seems I'm the only one who's suffering from this kind of issue. I'll now flash a 4.3 based ROM as all ROMs I tried till now are 4.4.4 based. Maybe it has something to do with this specific version of Android.
Only reason I bought it over LG G Pad 8.3 was timely OS updates, which ironically is giving me all the trouble that I never anticipated even in my dream.

I think those lag fix apps just run these commands:
su
fstrim -v /data
fstrim -v /cache
fstrim -v /system
Run them yourself in a terminal and see what happens.

Tried that too. But this lag is chronic. Twitter apps suffer from it the most. There is no lag while switching between apps or navigating the operating system. It's ONLY the scrolling that suffers.
Asus got to be the ****tiest Nexus OEM by far. It seems like every second guy is having some sorts of issue. Their quality control is almost non existent.
People thought first gen Nexus 7 was problematic, but only Asus could have managed to screw up the second generation Nexus 7 as they did.

Sometimes when I launch Super Hexagon, the game runs terribly slow. It feels like it's running at 15-20 FPS instead of 60 FPS. The weird part is that this lag persists after I exit the game. The whole system becomes super slow with choppy animations.
I've tried killing the app and even clearing the data, but the only thing that seems to fix this is a reboot. I can reproduce this behavior after rebooting again. It usually happens on the 2nd or 3rd time I launch the app, but sometimes it can take up to 10 times of closing and launching. Holding the tablet vertically seems to trigger it faster (although I'm not completely sure if it's related yet).
I'm running completely stock KOT49H and version 1.0.5 of Super Hexagon.
I haven't been able to reproduce this on my Nexus 4 or my old Nexus 7 (2012).
Can anyone else confirm that this happens on their Nexus 7 (2013)? I'm just wondering if it's a bug/compatibility issue or if it's a problem with my device
Just a quick update: Tried changing to ART with and flashing the latest franco kernel (just to experiment), and it still happens in the exact same way

I know this is a late response but I had the same thing happen to me twice tonight and I found your thread while googling for the issue myself.
Force closing the app doesn't help. It seems I have to reboot to fix it.
Have you by any chance figured out a fix? I'm running a 2013 n7 completely stock

Haven't found a fix yet
It's clearly a software issue though, either with the game or the latest N7 2013 build. Maybe someone who's more skilled could check the debug log (or something) to figure out the cause.
Hey

to fix this problem, open your favorite file explorer..
navigate through android/data/(superhexagon package file name)
go to settings.dat

Wow, I am astonished by Google. It has been over a year now and this problem STILL exists, I am having the exact same problem as described in the OP with several apps. How come this problem gets so little attention? Should be well known by now.
All those fancy design changes but who cares about actual system stability.
^What apps? I've never had this problem and this is my first time reading about it.
It's up to the app developer to keep their **** updated to work well with new versions of android. Nothing to do with google.

No way apps are supposed or even able to mess with the whole system like that and this bug doesn't happen on other devices like nexus 5 with the same apps so it's obviously just the device. I mean did you even read the thread you ignorant prick? The thread creator said too that he can't reproduce it with other devices such as Nexus 4 or Nexus 7 2012.
Hey,
I got my N7, 16GB WiFi, 1½ month(s) ago, and it was amazing. I was playing games, like Modern Combat 4, at a super smooth frame rate, I was browsing the web at amazings FPS's, just the general UI was so fluid.
The day I got it, I unlocked, flashed a recovery and rooted. I play the game I mentioned above, MC4, a lot and am quite good at it. I though that it would be a good idea to record what I was doing and show the world! (www.youtube.com/user/StealthGamingAndroid if you want to see)
The game was smooth before, just playing, and was still smooth after. What impressed me was that even while recording, it felt like I still had amazing frames.
About a week or so ago, that stopped. I was getting lag, the game was jittery and making the whole thing unplayable, even when not recording. But it wasn't just the game. The whole UI felt, even though it wasn't terrible, sluggish.
I didn't/haven't changed my setup, regarding ROM, Kernel or Processor Speeds since the day I got it. It is running the version of 4.3 it came with out of the box. (My choosing to keep it on that and not update)
The only things I have done regarding root have been using SCR Pro, the recording software, and using Xposed and Gravitybox.
I do not know what is causing this sudden lag, and how I can fix it. A brief search on Google didn't turn up anything that I could relate to. So I present to you my question.
How do I fix this lag?
I do not mind if it means using root, flashing a new ROM or even a new kernel. (Never flashed a different kernel on all 4 of my devices) Over clocking I also haven't done, but if it means removing the lag, I will consider it.
I am extremely grateful for what ever solutions or suggestions you give me, and will happily look into them.
Thank you for your time reading this, and for helping a confused user out.
Faithfully,
-R
Boot into recovery, clear you caches, boot normally, see if that fixed it, if not...boot into safe mode and see if the problem persists, if that fixed it, it's one or more of your apps, you'll have to either flash to stock and reinstall one at a time, when it starts lagging again you've found the app, or remove one at a time and see when it stops, if the problem still occurs in safe mode, backup and flash back to stock and see if it persist, if it does, maybe it's hardware.

I use an app called Clean Maste. You can get it in the Play Store. It's basically like CC Cleaner on the computer (if you don't have it, get it!). Just clear all the stuff in the junk option EXCEPT obsolete APKs. If you know what you're doing, cleaning in Junk Advanced can help too.
Also, be sure to delete all the apps you don't need, and clear your multitasking often.
For a big performance boost. you can overclock your tablet. First, tell us if the other things work above. If not, PM me and I'll be glad to teach you to overclock

When my tablet lags a little, I usually turn it completely off for a couple minutes. This helps me quite a bit.
This may sound dumb or crazy but you got to remember that it's a computer and turning it off once or twice a week will clear the cobwebs.

Totally agree.
I'm not sure what is causing lag, but my Note 4 had enough of it to be concerned.
Sending SMS and messages via hangouts is brutally slow, just as scrolling through Google Now and within the eBay application.
I have a little bit of stutter in touchwiz, but that isn't near as bad as the app stutter. Wondering if this is something to be concerned with.

Same here, my phone runs butter smooth with animations set at .5 and forcing GPU rendering. Gotta love that Adreno 420
OP might have a bad device. Try replacing it to see if that fixes the problem. Very few people have reported lag and it seems to be no more then any other device.

I want to point out that I had the same issues you mentioned. I went ahead and performed a factory reset since I just got the phone and I hadn't done much to it. It solved my problem and I'm not getting any more app stutter from sending messages through hangouts.
It happens, man. Initial setup of the phone could go wrong, especially when you load on a ton of apps at once. Might not have been your fault; it could've been the devil that loaded all that carrier bloatware on it.
No lag here either, I've been running a media converter on it 24 hours a day for the past few days to change a lot of my formats to mp4s from mkvs and even with that running in the background, with encoding being one of the more CPU processing hungry things you can do, I can play GTA:SA on it without issues.
I was actually lagging pretty bad past 2 days. I enabled ART and let it go for a day thinking it would get better. I restarted it the second day hoping it would help. Finally disabled it an hour ago and its working as expected... Guess there is no real point. I'll just hope we get 5.0 before the years over.

It was good for me before, but wowee. Thank you for the tip.
I feel the power!! So much of a difference that makes
Yeah buttery smooth here. I've disabled all the ATT apps via managing applications and ALWAYS use Rechild Task Killer - by far one of the best app killers I have used over the years since Tmobile G1, Note 1, Note 2, Note 3, and now Note 4. It helps despite what anyone may think.
Also, as other have mentioned, tap your build number 7 times to enable Developer Options Menu in Settings - General. From there, you can disable animation transitions - I always set all mine to 0/No animation because I don't need animations and that speeds things up a lot.
All my texts/MMS are fast along with browsing and internet - HUGE difference compared to the Note 3 (everyone was right- that phone had the worst WIFI imaginable - I was rooted and had the same setup as I do now on the Note 4). I have my MOTO 360 connected with bluetooth always on. I use Textra as my main sms/mms app. I'm really happy - battery life is excellent compared to my Note 3 because Android Wear eats a lot. I also have 1W weather widget on refreshing every hour. I have location on power saving mode so only Data and Wifi pinpoint my location instead of GPS (this is just common sense - GPS kills your battery so don't choose the TOP high performance option).

Wow, what a huge difference. Thanks!
thats odd because I dont get any lag. The only thing I noticed is once in a while, when opening Hangouts, the GUI gets stuck at a blank screen and I have to back out and enter in again. The other issue I noticed, which doesnt happen often, is that the network gets stuck in a certain speed (i.e. 4G or whatever), when I know I should be getting LTE service. If I toggle airplane mode, it switches to LTE and works flawlessly after that. Its almost as if the modem has a hard time switching networks.
Well, it looks like my Hangout lags is back after I got a ton of auto updates today. I probably shouldn't have left auto-update enabled. There's probably an incompatibility with one of the apps so I'm going to hunt it down. Other than that, the rest of the phone is quite smooth.

UPDATE: The problem is clearly the hangouts update itself. I uninstalled the update and disabled automatic updates. It's running smoothly again.
So the problem with hangouts appears to be the most recent update. Uninstall it and you'll run off of the stock version that shipped with the device. until they've fixed the problems.

I've cycled installing and uninstalling it a few times to verify that it was indeed the problematic version for me. It could very well be an incompatibility issue still, but I'm not experiencing problems with other apps... aside from Instagram being awfully choppy when cropping photos for upload.

GPU rendering is pointless. I tested the other day. The speed was exactly the same for opening and closing apps, etc. The drawback, if you have flash video enabled and watch any video, shows, movies, etc. - it will be laggy/choppy with this option enabled.
Might need a master reset. I just purchased this phone yesterday. The first phone they gave me reset itself almost 30 times on its own despite me master resetting like 5 times. After the second master reset I didn't load any apps and the issue still persisted. Went back and had them give me a new one. All is well now.

might have spoken too soon. Hangouts works fine after the latest update but i do notice a second or two lag when trying to open the keyboard or open a chat. Its not enough to really complain but it is noticeable.
Noob quesion.. Can someone please direct me to where I go to force GPU rendering on the Note 4? I can't find then setting anywhere. I've been out of the Android game for a while so I greatly appreciate the help. Really like this phone, but the lag on even simple tasks like Facebook scrolling is leaving much to be desired.

I just bought the 8.4 at the black Friday price and I'm getting awful lag when scrolling through a pdf in landscape. It only happens when crossing the divide between pages. It also lags worse when switching months in Google's calendar app than my Nexus 7 2012 does. In fact the image at the top doesn't even smoothly fade. The calendar just hangs for a second then jumps to the new month and image. I was curious if anyone else is seeing the same thing or if mine might be defective. It is a lot faster than my old tablet in most other ways but this random lag is driving me nuts.

I haven't tried a custom rom, still on stock. Tried a factory reset and I am still having the same issues.
I switched to CM because I couldn't even smoothly scroll down a page on Chrome on stock.
I may try that. I'm just afraid of having a problem down the road and Samsung giving me crap over it. How hard is it to restore stock?

The stock rom is available online and just needs to be flashed using Odin. I haven't tried doing it yet tho, but I doubt there will be any issues.
The biggest thing is that if you root or change roms, you're probably voiding any warranty that you have. If you're tech-capable and willing to troubleshoot your own issues, I would say that it's worth it.
Thanks, I went ahead and installed CM 11 and it fixed the problems I was having.
A few hours after flashing the factory image, my 5x has been scrolling really choppily, it's not as noticeable when I fling the scrolling ( take my finger off the screen after flinging the scrolling direction) but it's extremely noticeable when I'm scrolling while keeping my finger on the screen. I'm not quite sure if this choppiness only affects scrolling, it could possibly be a frame cap, but I haven't really noticed any lag or choppiness when opening apps. I think this could also be due to the system optimizating the apps in the background since android system and Android OS have pretty high battery usage percentages, and I've been having worse battery life than I had when my 5x was on marshmallow. The phone gets woken up a lot when it's idle. I've reflashed the factory image again and once again for the first few hours the phone is fine and then after that the scrolling choppiness returns and the Android system and Android OS battery drain too. I'll probably roll back to marshmallow if these problems don't get better in a few days after the system is done optimizating the apps in the background. I just wanted to know if anyone else has been having these issues and if anyone has a way to make the scrolling smooth again (once again the scrolling is smooth for a few seconds after rebooting and then the choppiness comes back once again) thanks in advance.

Yea, I also went back to marshmallow because I couldn't stand the scrolling choppiness and the battery life issues. I really did want to wait a few days to see if it made a difference but it felt like the choppiness wasn't just affecting the scrolling it felt like the phone was being frame capped. And the battery life just seemed to get worse and worse so the problems didn't seem to flatten themselves out. However I did read some posts on reddit that suggested the problems being caused webview being integrated into only chrome instead of being a standalone app; the post suggested uninstalling chrome and updating webview. For me it didn't really help with the battery issues and scrolling issues but others can try and see it helps with their phones.
Why are you reflashing the stock image? Try factory resetting or format data/cache in recovery, then just take the OTA.

I reflashed the stock image via the flash-all.bat file so it wipe the entire phone including the data and cache partitions. But even after that the scrolling choppiness and battery issues come back after a few hours.

I'm wondering if the stock image or the flashing process is the issue. I would try reverting back to MM and take the Nougat OTA update, and then format data/cache.
I dont get this issues.
But ive installed tupiac4u Custom Rom.
new on N5x, bought the day 7.1.1 came out.
I never tried 6.0 but 7.1.1 (only thing I tried, why downgrade?) is far from being smooth
I'm trying kernels, roms, aosp, cm, stock based, anyhting I do doesn't help. it's not smooth
I have 3 friends with unrooted phone, who just updated to 7.1.1 through OTA and is smooth as should be....curious....
well, I tried 6.0 and is not any good
updated to 7.1.1...not solved
done again factory reset with flash-all.bat to 7.1.1 and is still not perfect...
I tried a friend's unit, is damn smooth, really, 60fps always, scrolling is so good...
I really don't know how to solve this. custom kernels are faster but not smoother....
wish I could get it replaced

I just was having all these issues and Google is replacing my phone after going through all the troubleshooting with them.
If you guys go to the sound menu in the actual settings menu, does your volume jump around at all? I discovered this on the phone and I'm wondering if this is some weird issue separate form these problems or part of a bigger problem with this image.
