Help with s-off and ota - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi I have tried to go back to stock to do ota, and now I'm s-on can't get s-off again or get the ota to install or flash, I'm stuck and in need of some.Help please

Not enough info. Did you restore stock recovery? Why can't you install OTA (what error messages, etc.)?
Did you turn it back to S-on after doing S-off? If so, you didn't need to, as s-on is not required for OTA.
What is the current state of the phone, is it bootlooping, etc.?

The error.message from htc says the phone is rooted or tampered with and.cannot perform.update, I tried recovery and.relocking, to see if i can do the ota, same.error, I tried to flash the ota by going into the recovery screen after recovery to stock, where hold volume up and.press power brings up a menu to install from device or sd card, no luck there, says invalid cid

Current state of.the phone is rooted twrp, unlocked, s-on (firewater doesn't.work anymore), Harman karman installed, supercid, phone has boot looped but supersu did a update, so far no more boot loop, kit Kat 4.4.2, software #1.55.6664

It's a guess but H/K is a mod changing Kernel and will thus prevent OTA from succeeding as far as I know.

Perform a clean install of a TWRP Backup (of course one that fits your CID/MID, which is why @zhiarw asked for it I think) without this mod. After this reinstall stock recovery and try OTA again.
This should do the job.

As stated, supercid at the moment, original cid is saskt001

Go back to clean but older ROM and try Firewater again.

Ok, then find backup corresponding to your FW for this CID without H/K Mod, install using recovery (e.g. TWRP), go back to stock revocery.
After this you should be abled to perform the OTA.

Thanks, I'll try to find one

CID SASKT001 and BM___001 share the same software no.
So you can use 1.55.666.4 under CID BM___001 backup and recovery.

So is there a step by step for a clean twrp install ? Guess I didn't do that since I'm having issues

It's quite strait forward:
1) flash stock backup using TWRP
2) flash stock firmware using fastboot commands in bootloader
--> reverted to stock
3) check for OTA in settings menu

Awesome, thanks again, I'm New to this whole thing , came from having a iPhone

Congrats, the One is a good choice.

Ya I'll have to try when I get home, I'm hoping it works, and then I'll have to see what benefit there is to rooting since I haven't really done anything since.doing.the Harman kardon

Firewater doesn't work anymore. HTC patched the exploit.
You'll have to use SunShine S-Off. It costs $25, but is guaranteed to work or you don't pay.
Having S-Off is totally worth $25 IMO.
Here's a link to their website.

It also has a collection of stock recoveries to flash with ADB if you need that.

The stock recoveries or in that link too. I'm not sure if you need them for sunshine though. Try with custom recovery, if that doesn't work, get a stock recovery.
Or get both ROM and recovery stock, then reflash a custom recovery and ROM.
If you get both to stock, you shouldn't have any issues.

First, I misunderstood your earlier question. Yes the number in front of the backups are for firmware.
To help you more, I'll need some information. Hook up your phone to your computer and start ADB. Then issue these commands:
adb reboot fastboot (wait till your phone boots into fastboot)
fastboot getvar all
Then post what the readout says here, but edit out your serial number (serialno) and IMEI for your own safety.
Then I'll be able to give you a little more guidance.

Your CID is ORANG202 and your firmware is 1.54.73.5, so you will need the backup that corresponds with that.
The backup available was made with TWRP recovery. So you'll need that. (In my opinion, TWRP is a better recovery, less issues)
You could go to their website to download it and get instructions on how to flash it, but there is a much easier way.
Go to the Play Store and install an app called TWRP Manager. Hit the three line menu thingy on the top left, and pick "Install TWRP".
After that go back to the stock backup thread and flash the backup that matches your CID and firmware.

[Q] S-On How do I return to Stock

Hey guys as the Title says I'm Currently S-On, Rooted and Running ARHD 22.1 on my One M8 Euro/International which is Unlocked Using 3.401.9 firmware.
How do I go about returning everything to Stock as the Guide I have found assumes I have S-off which I dont/cant do due to it saying device incompatible.
Any helps much appreciated
Anyone Able to help as I really don't Fancy having a Bricked Handset
My guide needs S-OFF for some parts but the rest can be followed if you're S-ON. There is an RUU ZIP which might also work for you, so perhaps give that a go...
you'll have to relock the bootloader if you are s-on and then flash an RUU for your phone model to return to stock

Yeah i went back to stock unrooted and flashed the stock recovery from your ruu post and then relocked the bootloader but whenever i try to install the update, it doesnt boot into the recovery. It goes straight to the bootloader i think im going to run the ruu zip you provided and then try again.

i can't use this
this edited platform.xml so install update abort when around 10-15%
Yeah, same thing is happening to me. My bootloader is unlocked, and the phone is unrooted. I'll download the update, but whenever I hit install, it'll go to the install page, and the green bar starts loading, then it goes to the pre-recovery screen thing with the red triangle with the exclamation point. So I've tried two things. Number one is pressing and holding the volume up and tapping the power button, which gets me to the stock recovery screen. It says that the update was aborted. So I go and restart the device. This seems to have deleted the update, so I have to download it all over again. I do that, then install. Again, I get to the triangle ! screen, so instead, I press and hold both the power button and volume up (which is basically the equivalent of a battery-pull. I get the same result. The update has to download again. What do I do? I was contemplating locking the bootloader and even factory reseting the device. I've kind of been waiting for this update since 5.0 was released period, so I would like some guidance as to what to do next. Oh, and just for helps-sake, I'm using a mac, not a pc. I don't own a pc, only an iMac, and this MacBook Pro.
Anyone know what's going one? Please do help
Thanks!

After flashing stock recovery and relocking bootloader you need to flash RUU with your CID number. To find out your CID number install CID Getter from Play Store. After you find out your CID number you need to download RUU.And that is hard part of problem... I didn't find my RUU anywhere on web,but you maybe will have better luck.
When you have your RUU just rename file in OP9CIMG.zip and put it in to your sd card. After booting into bootloader phone will search for OP9CIMG.zip file and if CID number is same on phone that file will be flashed.

k, my CID is HTC J_15.. How could I find my RUU now?
My VMUSA 816 is still upgrading, but it looks like the solution for some people will be running the last version of ruu???.exe from HTC for your particular version of the 816 before downloading and installing the OTA update for Lollipop. Before running the ruu???.exe file the OTA would just reboot into the bootloader. Note that you should run ruu even if you already have that rom version installed. I already was running 1.50.652.3 but the OTA just wouldn't work. So the ruu just reflashed a clean version of the same rom.
As others have done I unrooted, installed stock recovery and then relocked bootloader before running ruu???.exe and installing OTA update for Lollipop.
The reason flashing a stock recovery would work before is because when doing a smaller update that stayed within kitkat it didn't do an entire system check, when upgrading to lollipop it checks EVERYTHING so the only way it'll install is having a nice fresh stock ROM from an RUU with a locked bootloader and stock recovery.

Did you check the HTC site yet? Look for ROM updates there first. I assume they have country specific sites that will list ROMs for your region. For me in they show all their ROMs for US carriers.

Can't load my rooted htc one m8 after OTA update

I had rooted htc one m8 with twrp. To be able to install OTA update I have flashed 4.20.531.4. It successfully loaded so I started update. However after reboot it did not go further than htc one sign on white screen. After that I tried following actions without any progress: flash twrp back, delete supersu, factory reset from both stock image and twrp, install previous builds. I can get to bootloader, but my pc does not see it throw windows explorer nor from htc sync manger. I'm stock and don't know what else can I do. Did I actually bricked my phone?

Do you mean restore a nandroid backup?
Yes, but it sounds like you already restored a stock 4.20.531.4 ROM, so I don't see how a nandroid backup would make a difference.
Are you trying to issue fastboot commands while in bootloader-fastboot mode? And no response?

Unroot Euro (EE) HTC M9 for OTA update?

Hi all,
I'm really out of touch with the scene so please go easy on me.
I rooted my European M9 a while ago and have TWRP recovery installed, S-On, Software version is 2.10.61.6, Baseband is 01.01_U11440601_83.06.50709G_F
The other day I got the Android 6.0 OTA update which I was not expecting as I was under the impression that since rooting (as has been the case with all my other Androids) OTAs would be disabled.
Just to see what would happen I accepted it, the device rebooted and of course loaded TWRP. So that's a no go.
Could someone please tell me what the best way of updating without having to lose all my data is?
S-off is the best and only way to save your data. Otherwise you need to go through the complex process of getting it back to official status.
Sent from my HTC One M9 using Tapatalk
OK, what's the best way to get S-off? I see there's a $25 app some people are using, is there an alternative to that?
No alternative. Sunshine works great but be sure to read twice and press the button once..
Sent from my HTC One M9 using Tapatalk
OK, thanks for the advice. So if I get S-OFF via Sunshine, what's next?
I have a full backup of my system before I rooted, can I not just flash back the stock recovery and then proceed with the OTA?
If not and I need to be S-OFF still then fine, just trying to understand why that is.
Thanks!
S-off just makes life easier for being able to run unsigned code. Like, unsigned roms will install.
If you flash the stock backup you still need to obtain official status to take the ota. This is known to bugger your phone if you get it wrong. S-off solves the buggered phones issue..
Sent from my HTC One M9 using Tapatalk
OK, thanks for clarifying the info.
I'm now rooted, unlocked and s-off.
The backup of my recovery partition is "recovery.emmc.win", what's the process to flash that back to the phone and continue from there so I can accept the OTA?
Another thing - It's possible that I accepted another OTA since making that backup as I'm now on 2.10.61.6. I can't find a stock recovery for that version so does this affect the process?
Bump! Can anyone help me out here with the correct guide to follow please? Really don't want to mess this up!
Hi JonnyG1980, I am happy to help you but don't suppose you could upload your backup as I have been looking for it for ages?

My stock recovery backup? I'm not sure which version that is taken from as I'm pretty sure I accepted an OTA to get to the version I am on now.
Download the orange RUU.zip from here and place on your sdcard rename to 0PJAIMG.zip boot into download mode and it'll prompt you to flash make sure you backup all your data etc beforehand as this will wipe your device

I'm trying to update WITHOUT wiping my device. Hence going S-OFF.

Hi Liam, where / what RUU?
I am trying to get back to some release of stock to get the mm ota.
I think I have three choices?
1. Restore my 1.32.16.x backup and take the 2.10.61.x again then on to MM but I need stock 1.32.61.x recovery
2. Restore someone else's 2.10.61.x backup?
3. S-off
So if anyone has either 1 or 2 I would be very grateful.
Thanks -

Yes but I need the specific RUU first!

Sorry if I'm repeating myself, but could anyone explain the benefits of S=Off again to me?
I've tried various RUU to update my phone and all have rejected the CID (ORANG001) so I've had no option than to use one with a matching base (x.x.61.x) to my existing rom. I was under the impression that the CID was made irrelevant or could be changed, but I can find no reference on how to go about this.
As I couldn't find my current RUU, or the latest MM release I had to go with 1.32.61.15, has this downgrade been permitted by being S-Off?
If you didn't change your CID then being s-off enabled you to downgrade.
As a reference, I am still s-on and cannot downgrade to 1.32.x from 2.10.x

Thanks, I think I get it now. Now just the question of whether to re-root or not remains.
Hi johnny did you achieve s-off? If so, how? Also, did you get to download and install the ota?
