I had rooted htc one m8 with twrp. To be able to install OTA update I have flashed 4.20.531.4. It successfully loaded so I started update. However after reboot it did not go further than htc one sign on white screen. After that I tried following actions without any progress: flash twrp back, delete supersu, factory reset from both stock image and twrp, install previous builds. I can get to bootloader, but my pc does not see it throw windows explorer nor from htc sync manger. I'm stock and don't know what else can I do. Did I actually bricked my phone?

Yes I have installed stocked recovery from t mobile. I changed my cid to super cid. Could that course me a problem? And is there a possibility for me to use nandroid recovery?

Some folks have said SuperCID interferes with OTA; others contradict this. So I'm not sure.

Do you mean restore a nandroid backup?
Yes, but it sounds like you already restored a stock 4.20.531.4 ROM, so I don't see how a nandroid backup would make a difference.
Are you trying to issue fastboot commands while in bootloader-fastboot mode? And no response?

I have an unlocked HTC One X, running Stock Rom and CMW recovery. CID 621. (never installed any custom roms, only CMW recovery and unlocking the phone)
I haven't updated my phone in a while since OTA failed due to the recovery. Last night I reverted back to the stock recovery and updated, successfully, OTA version 2.18.751.7.
After updating my One X informs me there's a JB OTA update, 3.14.751.20 but when I try to run it, it reboots, shows the green progress bar for about 30 seconds then shows the red rectangular of failure (rebooting starts up the device normally).
I tried reflashing the stock recovery, tried the recovery from the latest RUU for my CID (RUU_ENDEAVOR_U_ICS_40_S_Chunghwa_2.17.751.2_Radio_2.1204.136.21_release_275588_signed) but the OTA update keeps failing.
I also tried disabling SuperSU and used Voodoo Root Keeper to disable root, still the same red rectangular. Tried using the nandroid backup and running through the updates again, but same issue (2.18.751.7 installs correctly, but 3.14.751.20 fails).
Any help would be appreciated!

Have you tried relocking your bootloader? 'fastboot oem lock'
Also, maybe try flashing the stock kernel as well?
Did you remove anything?
You might try running an RUU if you can one one new enough, or restoring a backup (there are threads here for both backups and RUU, but look on htcruu.com, the device is endeavoru)

I'm hesitant about flashing a kernel, as I did not change the original stock one, and it feels too risky.

I thought about that, but the most recent RUU for my CID is older than what getvar is telling me (INFOversion-main: 2.18.751.7. latest RUU I found is: RUU_ENDEAVOR_U_ICS_40_S_Chunghwa_2.17.751.2_Radio_2.1204.136.21_release_275588_signed).
As to relock, I went through quite a few similar threads and in all relocking did not make any difference. Also, if that was the case, I don't think the first OTA update would have gone through.

I think the update to hboot requires it to be locked, your previous update was most likely ok with the hboot it was on.

Sorry to be a noob but what do you mean? I thought I couldn't use a backup older than the one listed under "main version". Or am I confusing things?

Update: locking the phone did not help
I locked the phone, but the update still fails at the same location. The green bar expands for about 20 seconds, covering about a quarter of the bar, and the the red triangle appears.

the tool looks easy enough, but they ask to include the custom JB rom of my choice. I want the Stock update, so what do I do?
The manual update list points to a broken link. I did find it somewhere else. How do I manually update? are these the commands?

There are a couple of really good stock looking ROMs on there with enhanced performance. There's one mentioned in my sig, it may also be the easiest route out of your issue using the tool posted above

Yes I am running to issues... turns out that manually flashing the firmware.zip just got my phone into a bootloop since it turns out you must install a custom rom after it. I did not want to install a custom rom just to get the OTA update to install. now my phone keeps rebooting and I'm waiting for ADHD to download (takes FOREVER! for some reason).
This really sucks. I wanted to stay with stock, and it looks like I can't even go back anymore, can't even restore with a RUU.

There should be a RUU out for your region soonish but Until then, a stock style custom rom is a brilliant option beleive me

You can restore an older backup, it's just like installing a custom ROM.
You might also be able to install a 2.17 RUU on 2.18, I'm not sure the hboot was updated. It's also possible to dissect an RUU and install the bits manually.
You have a few options.

Sorry did not find a solution. Ended up installing a custom rom, even though I wanted to keep using the stock one

I hope you did this the other way around......first flash the recovery and the relock the bootloader.....
But if you are on stock rom, kernel and recovery you do not have to relock the bootloader, it updates fine with a unlocked one.

I know there are many threads and questions about unrooting, but I haven't found anything useful to me (or I just don't understand them) and also I'm new to the whole root/unroot thing.
Here is the story. I rooted my device via TWRP Recovery. Then I tried to get S-OFF using Firewater. When I wasted like a few days trying to get this done I discovered that my device is "Patched by HTC" so I cannot use Firewater anymore to get this S-OFF.
The whole thing was to convert my M8 into a GPE version. Now I'm trying to revert my phone back to stock ver. because I have no need in root.
So is it possible to unroot my phone?
My CID is HTC_622
Software number is 1.60.708.2

Update on CID HTC__622
I have surfed the page with the list of nandroids, however there is no stock recovery that begins with 1.60. From other research it states that the first two numbers are the most important whilst flashing recoveries.
Any information would be really helpful

Alright. So I'm rooted with s-off. I had TWRP recovery. I flashed the stock recovery and got that going. Then I downloaded the OTA update and hit "Install Now". The phone instantly reboots, but goes into the stock recovery. I reboot the phone and I still have 4.4.2. What am I missing here?

This has been discussed many times,but is your boot loader unlocked? If so, your data/preload folder was wiped when the bl was unlocked and that is needed. Your system files must be 100% stock... Otherwise the update Will fail... You could always find the 4.4.3 ruu and flash in fastboot... That's what I did n worked flawlessly...

I've recently been exploring this forum and finally bit the bullet this evening and decided to try and de-brand my EE branded M8.
Steps I took were:
1) Used Sunshine to S-Off
2) Installed TWRP
3) Changed my SID from ORANG001 to HTC__001
3) Installed SuperUser
4) Downloaded the TWRP Nandroid for 1.54.401.5 - TWRP from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2701376
5) Used TWRP to restore the Nandroid and confirmed the software version was now 1.54.401.5
I have a few questions:
A) After the install the apps I had installed, my unlock pattern, contacts and wallpapers were all still visibile - is this normal? I had assumed the Nandroid backup would act like a factory reset
B) Is it safe to perform a factory reset, or do I need to somehow install a new image for it to restore from? I mean going through Settings -> Backup and Restore. Ideally having downgranded the software I'd like a "clean slate" - but I'm worried it will try and install a newer version and fail
C) Is it safe to perform an OTA update (this was one of my reasons for debranding)? Anything else I need to do?
D) Anything else I should be aware of? Any danger to leaving S-OFF and the bootloader unlocked? TWRP as the Recovery image?

Thanks for the help. For the life of me, I couldn't find anything about having to have that bootloader locked. You don't have to lock the bootloader again, whether you are S-ON or S-OFF doesn't matter.
When it boots to stock recovery, does it give a error message to you? If there was a problem during updating it'll show the problem to you.

Maybe the nandroid backup doesn't have data part, so restoring the backup alone will not erase your data because it doesn't get replaced. The best is make a factory reset in TWRP before you restore the backup

When you have TWRP installed, the best way to factory reset is Factory Reset in TWRP itself.

You won't be able to perform OTA as the system will say you have modified variant. What you need (a step that you're missing) is the proper firmware is flashed after your step 3. (also you may need a change of MID if the MID for ORANG001 is different from HTC__001; if they are same then skip this)

No danger, in fact you should leave it as it is, except when doing OTA you need stock recovery installed first (OTA won't work on TWRP)

Sorry I wish I woulda been more specific, there was really no point in relocking it... Once u unlock it the 1st time, the data/preload is wiped and relocking it doesn't bring it back..so u could've just left it
I have a Htc One M8 ; s-off, hboot 3.16, running 4.4.2. CID is Roger001, unlocked boot
Problem I have is I'm trying to restore the phone to stock because I want to do OTA updates. I followed the guide to return Canadian HTC1m8 to stock - downloaded the nandroid backup, restored it, flashed a stock image through fastboot;
However, now if I try a OTA it just reboots my phone and normally stalls out on the HTC screen. Nothing gets updated . If i try a factory reset, same thing, and it won't boot into bootloader until I wait a while then restart it. My data won't work anymore and TWRP recovery has disappeared. I think my issue is i flashed the wrong recovery .img, I'm a fairly noob. Checked all the related links and can't figure it out.
Any help would be amazing.

I got an update to work, I think I had the wrong stock installed so it wouldn't work properly. Only thing now is my data isn't working, any assistance with that that could be??
Instead of trouble shooting, I would just flash this TWRP backup tested to work on Rogers M8:

I just want to check if I get it right before I can't make calls anymore.. I have to use the latest twrp and don't encryp my backup because of this, right? And what version of superSu do I use? Do I use v2.82 or SR3-SuperSU-v2.79-SR3-20170114223742.zip? Thanks for helping me get out of confusion.

So I successfully rooted my HTC 10 and after that I got s-off. Apparently, I chose the wrong option (s-off and unlocked) and now my HTC 10 doesn't have an os installed. I am currently on cid HTC__621. Am I right in thinking that I can change my cid and then flash a ruu to get up and running again? Or will my being unlocked keep interfering?

If you made a backup after installing TWRP you can simply restore it. Otherwise, flashing a ROM or installing the appropriate RUU will work. Being unlocked won't affect anything now that you're S-off.

That didn't work because there were no partitions left to restore it to. So I wiped them and tried again. Failure again. Then my eye caught "factory reset" in download mode. I tried that and it worked. I even have twrp still installed.
