[CM11][SM-T320] Usage of open/close menu botton - Galaxy Tab Pro 12.2, 10.1, 8.4 Q&A, Help & Trouble

Hi,
I'm using on my Tab Pro 8.4 CyanogenMod11 M9.
I configured the recents buton as "open/close menu" for short press and the home button as recent app switcher for long press.
But the open menu action doesn't work in any app. I tried each other possible action. But no configuration works to open the menu. That's very bad for Firefox. Firefox don't offer me a settings button in the app. So I can't open the settings.
Does someone know the problem? Maybe it is fixed in a nighly build.
Can someone reports its expierence?
Thanks!
Dominik

Hey,
I deactivated for all buttons the open menu action. Now, Firefox offers me the settings button. This is a workaround. But I guess that there is a bug somewhere in the software?
What do you thing about it?
Thanks
Dominik

Try changing ur DPI in build prop to a higher # like 320, 340, etc. I use 400 cuz I like it big. That did the trick for me.

Uff, where do I find the DPI option? I looked in the developer options but nothing found. Is the a further hidden option?
Thanks for help
Dominik

Use ES File Explorer. Must have root access switched to RW on all columns in the tools menu. Navigate to device at the top/ then system/ build prop. Select ES note editor to open. You'll see a list of ur build prop. Then select menu, edit. Scroll down to lcd_density, and change to desired #. Save and exit. Careful not to mess with any other settings. Reset tablet, profit.

Try 380. That's a nice size for this screen.

Great! :good:
The settings menu in Firefox and other apps is back for values > 356
Now I will find out the best resolution for me.

Is this fixed in later nightlies? I'm working on cm11 for t800 (chagallwifi) and face exactly this problem:

see all settings on one page/ even sub folders of each setting

So I was playing around and noticed you can scroll threw one list of every settings and sub-settings(sub folder) of each setting
Hold down menu button (don't no about doing it from any app. But from whatever home launcher works)
This opens "S Finder" new feature/ app in note 3
Its an app that helps you search through anything on your phone
Anyways, scroll through middle row and click "Help"
Now next to settings click the down arrow
Now you have every single setting and settings option in on one scrollable list
If you learned something new. The Thanks Button helps alot!
Very cool. Don't normally use S Finder since I use the Nova Launcher.

Adding S Finder to your background using Nova Launcher
If you are using the Nova Launcher... you can create an S Finder widget and then use that to do the same.
Press and hold on an empty spot on your background
Select Shortcuts
Select Activities
Scroll down the large list and find S Finder
Click on that, then click on the single S Finder that pops up below it.
Now you have S Finder on your background.
Select that... and you can follow what the poster above showed.
Second line scroll over with your Finger/S Pen to Help
Scroll down to Settings and click on the Down Arrow on the right like the above poster did.
You can still use s finder on any launcher. I use nova too. Just hold down menu
This is nice. Thanks! Just wish I could have the white theme everywhere...

New Quick Way Into Settings?

Just picked up my Note 4! With the replacement of the settings button with the Multi-Tasking button (which I love) how is everyone getting into their settings? Wondering if there was another quick settings option outside of placing a shortcut on the home screen. Loving the phone!!
Long press the multitasking button.
this did not work on mine, i have since installed nova yet again and not long pressing the open apps button works.
There are quite a few things they took away from this note that was on the note 3.
I decided not to install Nova yet, but he is right long pressing works. Looking forward to some blogs putting up guides and screenshots of all the new and "hidden" features.
Just pull down the notification shade...there's a settings button. Lol.
I think they mean the per-app settings button rather than the main device settings app.
I too love the multitasking button. Long hold press on home button was making me die a little bit every time on the note 3. This is much better.
Now, if I could stop accidentally invoking multitasking thinking I am going to get an app settings menu to drop down! Doh

Well, long-pressing the multitask button works for me to get access to the overflow/menu....
App specific options/settings menu? I dunno how else to explain it. Not all apps have them and the functionality is app-dependent. I.e. in chrome it pops up a menu with options like <- and -> and find in page etc. Now you have to long press the bottom left softkey to get to that instead of a single tap.
Main phone settings app you get to by tapping the gear button in the notification screen- which hasn't changed. Seems like that is what you were referring to. There has never been a softkey to get to that- that I know of

Overflow menu, yeah. Sorry didn't know what the heck to call that thing. Sorry for the confusion

Customizing Buttons

I am wondering if there is a way to customize the Menu, Home, Back buttons. Since I am so use to how S4 buttons were. My S5 custom rom have this as built-in feature. However, the custom rom I am using on my Tab S 8.4 doesn't. Any idea?

I Googled about this a while ago and found an XDA post describing that you can make some changes to the HW button functionality. It required root and manually edits to a build.prop or similar system file. Unfortunately I no longer have the link to that post but you can do the same searches that I did. I was hoping to modify what they initiated and to add long press functionality. What I found only did some of what I wanted.

I was able to change the left soft key to menu button by editing two files located at /system/usr/keylayout/:
1) Generic.kl
under # samsung
key 254 RECENT APP
Change it to
key 254 MENU
2) gpio-keys.kl
Add this line to it: key 254 MENU
Save both file when you close it. Reboot into custom recovery, wipe cache and dev cache. As for the long press Home key to bring out Recent App, I can't seem to find a solution. I was able use a work around way. I use Nova Launcher, which allows me to assign "Recnt App" as double press on Home key. Hopfully someone will be able to assign long press Home key for it. I guess I will have to use my work around way for now.

SM-P600, temasek V18.5 menu button not working

Hello!
After several and exhausting searches without any solution, and as I am not allowed to post in the thread for the ROM, I have to ask here how to get it solved: I have a SM-P600 Samsung Note 10.1 2014 Edition running Temasek v18.5, and the menu button does not work as it should. In the settings, it is set to "open/close menu", but it does not do that in most apps. Not in Nova Launcher, not in Firefox, not in K9-Mail, and so on. To my surprise it does work in FiiNote and in Google Maps. Everything I have found so far is not really a solution (like enabling the 3-dot menu icon).
How can I get that solved?

in firefox, at least, that is a known bug. go to settings > buttons > enable nav bar and then set the nav bar height to 0 (hidden) and then restart firefox

New menu button after upgrade to Android 7?

After updating my unlocked HTC 10 to Android 7, I noticed "menu button" option in display settings. There is a check mark, but I don't know what it does.
I'd guess it's giving you the option of having the new one on screen, or continue using the capacitive button. Just a guess tho
Can I ask what build No you have?

You mean the three line hamburger menu button? It's just an addition to get to most used setting options quickly. It's not only in display, it's on other settings menus as well
I don't really see any changes when I toggle "menu option" in the display settings.

I selected that and didn't see any difference until I opened JetAudioPlus. There was a menu icon on the right bottom corner of the app.I think some apps make it visible,to make the menu easy to reach.Bu when I click it it still opens the menu on the upper right corner.I think the option is there because someone may need it in some apps.I don't need it.So I disabled it.
Is there some way I can use the right "recent apps" button as a real menu button??
I already tried Button mapper app by Flar and it doesn't have that function.
Did they get rid of the option to long press the recent apps button for menu? If so, that's lame...

Yes they did. Somebody who has a twitter account should write to Mo Versi or Graham Wheeler so that they are aware of this issue!

Yes there is.. I've got a thread in the guides section. Find it and it'll show you the location of the file to edit. Can't remember off the top of my head.
