External SD stopped working - Galaxy Note 8.0 (Tablet) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooti

My Note8 is about 3mos old and is rooted running on CM11. My 64gig Kignston was inserted on day 1 and left in, working fine. Yesterday the external SD stopped. My file manger, Xplorer, started running very slowly so I shutdown, took out the card and replaced it and restarted. It came back up slowly, 1.5min instead of 1.05. The SD card is NOT recognized when I look in Stettings:Storage but when I removed the card I received the warning about removing it without stopping it. My Galaxy 8 phone has the same type card in it so I swapped them. I can see and use the card in the phone but the Note 8 does not recognize the phones card.
Any suggestions?

Do a factory wipe and see if things go back to normal with the SD... if it does not, it could be hardware or a bug in CM11 version you are running.

By "Factory wipe," do you mean re-install stock firmware or just wipe it an re-install the latest cm-11?

overheating sd card
I had the same problem.
The solution was that the card overheaded by use it.
I can read them in a card reader but not in the Notes 8.
I have exchanged the card and now this card is not so hot in use.

Not sure what solved it but I did a factory reset anf flashed the latest CM11 snapsot. Mine was a couple months old

Went through 3 16gb Lexar cards - all failed

I went through 3 Lexar Micro SD cards (600x class 10) all failed and sent back to Lexar. They kept replacing them but I stopped trying after 3rd card failed. At first I thought it was the cards, but now I think it must have been the Note 8. Once they failed they wouldn't work in any device and they couldn't be reformatted.

SD Card Problems - Solved mine today
Today I had the issue with a 64MB Ultra - Card Corrupt, and it would reformat it appeared and not recognize - saying file system invalid.
I took it out of the Note 8 and tried it in the Note 3, and it worked fine, with all my original files seen, (though teh Note 8 had run through 3 versions of Format Card.
Then I put it back in the Note 8, and it was recognized again, but in "My Files" nothing was showing. I used a program I use called simply ES File Manager, from the Play Store, and it saw my original files on the card (photos, music, videos) Once I opened one of each from within the ES file Manager, the system then saw the card and worked with the files again.
Not sure what trick worked, putting the card in the Note 3, or opening within ES File Manager, but I am back in business after being upset about losing my files. They were all there.

SD card unexpectedly removed...

So I have searched for this error and no one seems to have an answer that fits my problem. I got an error after booting that stated SD card unexpectedly removed and gave me a triangle with an exclamation point in the center
the card works fine
it will mount up perfectly from recovery, i even pushed several roms to it and tried (cyanogen, RR, and SkyRaider) all three worked beautifully, but as soon as I boot up BAM "SD card unexpectedly removed" and I can't access anything
the computer reads it just fine so I am pretty sure there is nothing wrong with the card, also with it reading in recovery it seems there is nothing wrong with the phone
is this a problem with ROMs?
I could try to do a factory reset and see if that works... but its really annoying :\
any help?
I would try reformatting the card on your PC. The card may have a bad sector that the PC and Recovery ignore. The phone OS tends to be a little more picky about those sort of things.

Thank you, I am running good now
I noticed when I was trying to backup my SD card (pictures and whatnot) that some of the files were corrupt
I will make sure I keep a regular backup just in case its a sign of the card going bad
good thing is my titanium backups were all perfect

You are on the right path - don't forget, a good practice is to back up your SD card to your PC regularly.
Why? If (when really) the SD goes wonky, you have a PC backup of the card, and you can get another SD, format it on the PC, load the backups you made, and be back in business in short order.

My solution was to format and start over, that was the only thing that worked for me
I've gotten this a few times and it is a PITA because it resets all the notification sounds and also the phone reboots. Once it does it, the only way I can get it to work is to remove the card, put it in the PC, let Win7 do a fix and repair errors and then it will work. I tried removing and reinserting, and it would mount the card and immediately give me the 'sd card unexpectedly removed' message.
I tried reformatting, and the sd card worked for a while and then I got the 'unexpectedly removed" message again after a few days. The last time it gave me that message, I just did the repair errors thing again and it's been working without fail for about 4 days now. It seems like it's going to be an ongoing thing though.
I've been googling like a mad person trying to find a real fix for this. I saw a thread on Android central where they guy said he put his wife's card in his phone and it did the same thing; but worked fine in hers. He mentioned it might be related to the 2.2 OTA update. My problem did start after that update.
In another forum thread, someone posted that they bought a new card, and it gave them the same message. So it doesn't appear to be a bad card; which is what I originally thought. I'd hate to buy a new one and have same issue (i have a 16gb card currently).
(sorry for long post)
I have the same problem! I'm using a Verizon HTC Droid Incredible 2. Previously i've been running Froyo 2.2 over the phone with a 16 GB microSD Card without problem. Later i've been using a 2 GB microSD Card and works fine, but now i'm runnin' Gingerbread ROM From verizon with 16 GB microSD Card and the messages "SD Card unexpectedly removed" don't stop.... the card works fine over other phones... even the stereo of my car can read perfectly the card's content.
I don't know if this is a problem with the update or what????
I don't think in the versions of "Bad sectors" because i check everthing and the problem persist.
The problem appears when i'm playing music... later of that the problem appears at the camera, the file explorer or another app that tries to read the SD Card.
I reboot the phone and works fine but after a couple of minutes the same [email protected]$%&t appears again....
I'm tired of reading forums telling me that is a problem with the sectors... that is a LIE!
no matters the class of the card because i've tried with Class 2, Class 4 and works fine.
This night i'll go to the store that solds me that coursed card to change it!
if tomorrow my problem was solved i been writing at this same forum!

I do not think someone saying it is bad sectors means they are lying.
I think they are merely trying to help you determine what the problem could possibly be.

did you format the card and try again as suggested earlier? That usually clears up any issues with sd cards unless they're fubar'd. Just make sure you back your card up first.
Whenever my card does this I put it into my Windows computer, right click on the card and go to properties/tools/error checking/ and check both boxes and let it run. It fixes my issues every time without formatting the card.
I had that problem a while back with one of Verizon's updates after 2.2. Reformatted card. worked fine in other phones but still said same thing everytine I put it back in the dinc. Ended up getting a new SD card then all was fine.

If you have an ext extension on your sd use G-Parted (google it) to format your ext2/3/4 partition.

[Q] CyanogenMod 7 is ruining my SD cards

Now I'm not moaning about CyanogenMod here, I'm just trying to understand how I can fix the issue.
Basically, I had CyanogenMod 7 RC2 on my Desire Z. That was it.
Eventually I saw through ROM Manager that the full release of 7 was out so I downloaded, took a backup, wiped everything and did a fresh install of the new ROM.
It installed fine, but none of my apps that needed root access were getting it.
So I booted into recovery, restored my backup, root was back.
I then installed 7.0 over my RC2. That worked fine, but again root was gone.
At this point, my phone started damaging SD cards.
It suddenly started saying that my 8GB card that came with the phone was damaged. I tried to fix it on the phone, but it just said 'Checking card' and then giving up.
Putting it in an old MP3 player, it is not detected at all.
Putting it in a card reader, the card is unreadable and when I try to format it Windows says the card is 'read only' (this is not due to the reader).
I put a functional 2gb card I had lying around into my Desire Z and it broke it in the exact same way.
My question to you guys is - what could be causing this and how do I fix it because I have a 16gb card coming and I'm obviously cautious of putting it in the phone.
Also, how would I go about flashing the new Cyanogenmod 7.02 ROM if my phone keeps breaking SD cards I put into it?
This error can be because when ever you install a CyanogenMod ROM over another, It leaves files your new ROM think is useful such as data that the new ROM doesn't support. It is damaging your SD Card because it keeps attempting to fix the error but is making it worst by trying to remove system files. Your best bet is to try another ROM and see if it does the same thing and report it to CyanogenMod Developer Team if it only does this to CyanogenMod ROMs otherwise it would be just a virus on your SD Card feeding off of personal data. If it is only CyanogenMod ROMs, we will adress this issue ASAP. Hope I helped
Thank you VS4, you are indeed helpful
I've since heard some people have managed to fix their SD cards by formatting them in ClockworkMod but I can't even mount it first in order to do this! Is my card truly dead?
Also, do you think the reason that CM7.0 had no root (even when it was a clean install) was due to me not 'fixing permissions'?
Thanks
Just a note to say that I've managed to fix it!
Despite being unable to 'mount sdcard' in clockworkmod, I found I was able to activate USB Storage and through this I was able to format the card (Windows 7 was previously saying that the same card was 'read only' in a multitude of card readers).
I hope this helps any poor chap with the same problem.
I had this exact same problem, munched 2 of my 8GB cards, and had a 16 on the way. I somehow fixed it before the 16 came and I've never had the issue since, glad to see an explanation of it.
Thanks, nofixio!
I had the same problem on my Samsung Fascinate with CM7. It ate my 16GB SD card to the point where the phone wouldn't recognize it, CWM wouldn't mount it, and it wouldn't show up on my computer in multiple SD readers.
I wasn't quite clear what you were suggesting when you said you were able to "activate USB Storage." I thought maybe you meant within CWM. That didn't work for me, but I was able to boot the phone up with the problem SD card in it and turn on USB storage as normal. Suddenly my computer could not only see the SD card, it could see all the files that were on it before it died! I backed everything up, formatted the card in Windows, and everything's good now. Thanks for the tip!

im running cm7 ... it wont read from computer. i tried several micro sd card readers. it just tells me it cant format. its just like what was mentioned before.
Weird, I've never had any problems with Cyanogen 7 roms. I've flashed one over another and had no issues at all, Mayb because I use SuperWipe before hand? Or maybe its a certain sd card issue???
Running Desire Z and Andromadus Beta 11 I had similar problem after I had applied remote wipe from Exchange (wanted to see if it works). Remote wipe worked: it destroyed contents of SD card and erased phone back to factory settings. After wipe mounting SD card failed and Andromadus seemed to be unable to format the card.
Solution: Booted phone to Clockwork recovery and applied advanced -> Partition SD Card.
Posted this on this thread since it came first when searching solution.

[Q] LG G3 slow after SD card

Hello-
I received a Samsung 16gb SD for my LG G3 from my partner this weekend. Since installing it and adding stuff to it every time I click the home screen all my widgets and apps have disappeared and it takes about 5 seconds for them all to return. I have added some apps to the SD card and used smart clean by LG to clean up the internal card. I tried unmounting and soft resetting the phone as someone mentioned a fix when browsing the net but still no help.
Does anyone else have this problem?
It is an official SD card by the way as it came with her Galaxy S4. I have the 16GB/ 2g ram version

I would backup all the data and format the SD inside your phone. After that restore data to the SD. Have also done this when going from an SGS4 to the G3. While the card did work, after formatting everything was much faster

So did everything as requested and still the phone is slow. However I did notice that when the card was wiped the phone still stuttered. Could it be that the SD card is too slow to read from?
Had to delete apps. Nothing was connected!
i have a 64GB Samsung SDXC ard and yes it slows the whole phone down i think its got something to do with Samsung not playing well with LG soon as a replaced mine with a Team branded sdxc card it worked again shame the Samsung one was meany to be a fast card
I am using a samsung evo 32gb class 10 card no such issue

Is it class 10? well this maybe off topic but I'm using 64gb class 10 from Transcend no issues too or whatsoever. It's also fast when the phone reads it. So i might be thinking that depending on what class your SD card might be since read/transfer rate depends on it. Hope this helps.

Help - not reading micro sd card

I have a PNY a 64gb class 10 had this card since the phone came out,
I noticed that you could update to marshmallow by LG Bridge, so i did so, everything went smooth, however i noticed everything used to be saved on my sd card then was saved to my phone and its not reading my sd card at all.
Ive formatted the sd card through my phone by storage-sd card-settings-format- while im doing this at 20% it will say sd card is ejected but then proceeds and says its been formatted correctly.
However the phone will read the sd card only in SETTINGS-STORAGE, it will read the files on the sd card, how ever if i try and play music/movies it will not read it through my apps like mx player/poweramp.
Apps like app manger 3 - which i use to transfer apps to sd card will not read my sd card at all.
Ive tried and formatted the sd card through my phone only around 5 times and still the same problem.
any help

i would check the permission thing just to make sure.. here is a how guide for that
i dont know what you can do more than that, you could maybe try to check another microsd to check if it didnt ruined the file system on it or(or simply if the sd you have is broken) or to if it is really a OS issue...
but as it seems for now a lot of people having problem with the sd part of marshmallow...

ive tried to do permissions but it wont allow to change to sd card,
Ive reloaded phone and before it comes onto my home screen says mount my sd card, ive gone into storage - sd card- mount, restarted phone but again the same issue.
When im in camera mode the phone allows me to select where my photos will be saved (onto sd card), i can go into settings_sd card and read everything onto sd card, however its just moving apps onto sd card it will not allow.
Ive read online saying marshmallow may only allow apps to be saved on internal memory now due to previous versions off OS- was a problem with viruses being attached on apps which were saved onto sd card- was the main problem. Could it be this?, marshmallow doesn't allow this.
Use TWRP to format, that was the only solution to get my 128 GB sd card working after update again. The integrated format function always tell me success while notification said card damaged. After formatting with TWRP everything worked again
Edit: Are you sure you flashed correct patched kernel as this can disable vfat reading? Look here in forums, there is a thread about different version names for different countries (e.g. German V20a is polish version V20b)

SD Card "disappears"

Hello everyone.
My main issue for a few months has been the microSD card. Before I unlocked the bootloader, rooted and installed custom ROMs, my SD card worked fine, which was a SanDisk Ultra Class 10 32GB. After doing those things, my microSD card (or my phone) has been suffering a problem where it either corrupts or it disappears from the configurations of the phone, even after buying a SanDisk Ultra 64GB microSD card. I even unrooted, reinstalled the stock ROM and locked the bootloader but this keep happening.
This is incredibly frustating, because my main use for the card is Spotify, Netflix and Youtube Go! (I like to download everything on the highest quality possible) and every time it corrupts or dissapears I have to format the card and download everything once again. I even tried formatting it for internal storage but it dissapeared out of the blue other day just like it happens when it's setup as external storage.
Does anyone else have the same issue or know any fix to this?
It may be a hardware issue with the sd card reader

And only Motorola would be able to fix it?
A hardware specialist could, it's not just limited to Motorola workers.
I have similar problem/s
A. It takes a lot of time until card is ready
B. After it shows as ready, it can dissappear after a few min.
I u reinsert it, it takes more time, and sometimes fixes the issue.
The weird part. If it is ok, it will work like that until next reboot.
I really dislike this phone.

You don't need to format it
If it says sd card corrupted when you turn the phone on simply remove the sdcard (whilst the phone is still on) wait a few seconds then put it back in again
This works if formatted as external storage - not tried as internal as I don't see benefits in this

It says SD card corrupted while using the cell phone. Like, let's put this situation:
I had downloaded all my Spotify songs in the highest quality they allowed, listened to them while coming back from University on a Tuesday night. I put my G5 to charge during my sleep. When I wake up the next day to go to work, I cannot access any of the music, because suddenly my SD card disappeared from the cell phones (if I go check in the settings, it says 24,59 GB instead of 84,06 GB). After a few minutes, the SD card re-appears but says it's corrupted.
Since creating this thread, I haven't added anything to the SD card and I never got the issue again, so I'm pretty sure it's something with the way Spotify files work.

Have you tried connecting your sd card to the pc and check for the available space ? If it does then copy the data to your pc, format your sd card (ControlPanel>Administrative Tools>Computer Management>Disk manager).
Then re-insert the blank sd card into your phone and see if it shows up.
