from y'day.. sometimes i get the below message when i switch the phone
"phone could not able to backup data to SD card"...
The phone seems to lose access rights to the SD Card, so nothing is displayed in the file manager (estrong or Astor) The only way to fix this is to restart the phone.
in the phone settings-> SD scard option, I still have the option to unmount the SD card.. but then I don't know who to mount it back.. the only way i am able to fix it is by restarting the phone...
from y'day till now I got this problem for 3 times..
Anybody else having problems with this? please help..
Hi, I have the same issuses. It is very annoying, especially when taking photos. I tried reformat card, but it worked only for a week. I have got euro version, firmware 1.15.405.4. I hope HTC will solve this issue together with multitouch issues in next firmware.
I bought a 16Gb card and cannot get it to work in the Desire.
I've tested it in the PC, formatted it etc but it still won't work.
I'm not convinced where the fault lies, with the card or the Desire.
I had a problem once with sd+camera app, but after a reboot everything worked
funny enuff. that happened to me 2 yesterday ?
Sent from my HTC Desire using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk
One of my 16GB cards also got corrupted. I found it did not slide into the SDHC card slot properly and did become dislodged. Check to see if the SD card is inerted correctly. My replacement 8GB seems fine.

I have 16 GB Kingston Class 2 in my Desire and no problem so far, quite cheap too.
I have had this a couple of times.
Install the SDMount Widget. Unmount the card in settings, click the widget, back in business.
I'm experiencing this issue about once a week... :/

This doesn't work. I have the same problem as described above. I just ordered a new 8gb SD Card. I hope it's an SD card problem and not something wrong with the phone
Thread with same discussion here if you wanna check it out.
I've also been having SD card issues since I got the phone but yesterday things got worse!
After the problem occured again, I thought I'd try removing and reinserting the SD card (despite having done this before). When I restarted the phone it came up with a this message on the notification bar:
Blank SD Card
SD card blank or has unsupported filesystem.
I've tried reformatting the card in the phone, with the phone attached to my comp via USB, and with the card in a card reader. None of this works; the computer just doesn't recognise the card.
I've just emailed HTC support with the problem. I'll report back when I get an answer.
Also 16GB issue
Since a few days I have issues with my 16GB card also. I tried to install Navigon on the card by copying files directly to the card. After inserting it into the phone two out of three directories were empty....
Trying to copy fromt the pc to the Desire using it as a disk drive gave me the blue screen of death
I tried to install it using the original 4GB card and everything works like a charm
I tested the 16GB card (forgot what tool, it was a 1 month trial without write testing) and the card came out fats enough and without any bad blocks.
I will do a write test this evening (EU time) to see if I can fit 16GB ont the card, but everything points to the phone at this moment

I've had exactly the same problem which I posted about in another thread. Do let us know if HTC get back to you
Same problem with my Desire and a Sandik 16 Gb Class 2...
The card works fine on my mp3 player, but it is not recognized by the phone. I'm going to contact HTC, too.
My Desire has complained twice now that my 16GB SD card is damaged and needs to be reformatted. But when I put it in my Nokia N97, it works fine. The last time I did a disk check in XP, and that took care of the problem for a while at least, but it seems strange that the problem appeared in the first place.
Having invested in a 16gb class 2 Kingston card for my desire I can tell you that it brings nothing but grief. I then purchased a 8gb class 6 pqi branded card and found it to be flawless in performance. One thing I noticed with the class 6 card is the very fast speed in copying to and from the card. Much faster than the Kingston class 2. On the class 6 card I have never had corruption of data or any problem. I see comments posted that the class makes no difference. In my experience it makes a huge difference.
you guys are having issues with your 8GB/16GB cards, i was considering getting a 32GB a few days from now, after reading all this i'm having second thoughts.. does size matter ? (pardon the pun)
I don't think the size of the card should matter, but then again - it just might. I was wondering if there's a slight possibility my card got corrupted from when I've had it connected to my computer in disk mode. I only use the "safe disconnection of hardware" button in XP, but I don't select to unmount it on the Desire - it shouldn't be a problem, but perhaps that's how it got broken. Or perhaps it's just damaged and glitchy
Make sure the MBR is formatted too. Windows does not do this by default. Search for a tool on the internet.
Hey everyone,
I've been looking everywhere to get some help with a problem I have with my 32GB SD card.
I'm using an Xperia Play (R800) rooted, unblocked and bloteware removed. Whenever I try to move files, I use one of 2 methods:
1) moving files by connecting the phone to my PC via USB cable and dragging files
2) unmounting the SD card from the phone and use a card reader to move files
In both cases, no matter how I try or how I move the files, eventually the phone will either freeze / freeze + reset / reset / or everything combined several times. Once the system boots up again, it restarts itself several times while trying to read the memory card.
This is really frustrating because it happens to me for the past 4 months, ever since I bought the phone and tried working on it. No matter what I try to do, I always end up with this problem, which eventually leads my SD card to randomly delete files. This includes music, transferred PSX games and such. It's really bugging me, and I really need some help.
If anyone can help me out, I'd deeply appreciate it.
Thanks a bunch in advance
NOTE:
The card was later formatted to 2 partitions: FAT32 and EXT2. This DID NOT help, so re-partitioning my card won't help. Think of something else.
Repartioning your sdcard over and over can result to data loss. Why did you have 2 partitions? You should only be using FAT32 as your primary partion.

I only did that once, and it doesn't have anything to do with the data loss as this happened before I partitioned the SD card. I have 2 partitions for Link2SD app. And even if I do have FAT32 as my primary partition, it still deletes my files at random...
I have 2 partitions for same reason as you Link2SD! That should not be a problem.
Couple of questions
(1) Is this a new SD card and have you used the card before on other phones (Could be a fault with card try different SD card)
(2)Have you been on the same rom since this problem started (If yes i would try a different rom could be a software problem.)
I would try these options to narrow down what the problem is seems like you have tried all the partition and formatting options already :fingers-crossed:

To answer your questions:
1) This SD card has not been used on other phones since this is my FIRST smartphone (took me a while to move to the next step )
2) I never use roms, only the default stock rom.
I find it hard to believe that the SD card is the problem, but what do you think?

I think only way to know if SD card is to blame is try another one, there are apps on Google Play that can test SD card but I don't know how reliable these are. Also you said you deleted bloatware did you delete something you should not have?It would be good if you could try another card then you would know for sure a smaller SD card just to test?
Well, oddly enough the problem WAS the SD card all along! I've been trying a new SD card for the past week and everything went smoothly.
Funny, but the solution was only to replace my SD card.
With that in mind, I'm changing my question. I guess there have been many posts about it, but I'm going to ask this anyway:
What would be the best SD card for the Xperia Play? The bad one I used recently was a SanDisk 32 GB Micro SD card, and the one I'm using now is a small sized 8 GB.
Can anyone help me out on this one?

The best sdcard for the xperia play is a Sandisk class 4 or 6 sd card. Preferably stick with the class 4.

I have a Sandisk Ultra Class 10 64GB card. Worked great for 5 months. A week ago, my phone started hanging like crazy. First 2-3 times a day, then 20-30 times a day. I factory reset my phone, but with the same problem.
Then I removed the SD card and phone started working perfectly again. Inserted the SD card, then same phone hanging problem.
You may note, I have never got any SD error message. The phone only hangs.
Any idea if this can be repaired with a format of the SD card or is it a hardware failure ?
Help will be appreciated.

I formatted it to FAT32 when I bought it 5 months ago. Working great for 5 months. Haven't received any Read or Write errors yet.
Would the phone hang because of an SD card?

Are you using the SD card in Fat32 or exFat file system ? I had a similar kind of issue before. Remove the card and using a card reader, connect it to PC to check for possible malware/virus on the card. And then format the card completely on PC( not on phone) and most probably it should solve the issue.

Yes it can cause issue
Format it again
insert card, if there is no issue restore data after scanning with good antivirus.
The very first day i got my Note i had this problem,(samsung 32GB card.
after several resets etc same problems, it was so bad that it even crashed the radio part of the device!
I was about to return the device when i remembered that we had similar issues with the Htc pro 2 with windows mobile,
After a few minute of scanning my brain it hit me, Pictures and thumbnails!
I then deleted all pictures from the card and thumbnails and behold, problem gone.
In my case it was a corrupted picture or thumbnail that was crippling the device, but if i use the card in other devices as the galaxy s 3 mini there was no problems there.
Use exFAT!
It's better than FAT32 and it has file support that is bigger than 4gb
Damm! Its hung twice again, without the SD card... And in the last 6 months never hung even once.
What do I do?

Maybe it's a corrupted file in it.. Try formating it then try it when it's empty, if there is no issues then yea there is a corrupted file was in it..
Also try to make it exFAT with perseus or RedPill kernel, as far as I know, they support exFAT..

What He/She said!!!!
I am stumped! I got a Sandisk 64gb sd card for this. Naturally, it came formatted as exfat. From stock through 3 different CM based ROMs, I can't get this S4 to read the SD card. I even downloaded a partition manager to format it to Fat32. I also wiped it and let the phone format it. Even after that it would read it. I know CM now supports exFat format. I even flashed separately the script from the original thread. In any case my laptop has no problem with the sd card. Any help appreciated.
I have a Patriot 32 gb class 10 that was working fine until s couple of days ago. Then the phone said sd card unexpectedly removed. Pulled battery and card nothing. Did a format still nothing put that card in my Asus transformer tablet. read just fine took the card thatvi had in my tablet without formatting it put it in my s4 and it read it. this is my 4th galaxy device they should have figured this out by now. Any suggestions.

The sudden unmounting and/or sd card not being recognized by the S4 and other devices as mentioned is a known issue that is usually SD card related. Sometimes it's just a matter of reformatting your card to Fat32 if your ROM cannot read exFAT cards.
But if that's not your issue or you already reformatted your card to the appropriate format, the SD card has failed and warranty/replacement is suggested.
Can happen to SanDisk cards in addition to other manufacturers.
You may hear this issue being associated to SanDisk cards if only because they are probably the most counterfeited card out in the market. But the issue can occur to non counterfeit cards also.
To reduce your chances of having theses issues happen, always get your cards from reputable sources, in blister original packaging, etc. And if the price looks too good to be true, it most likely is. Even if you take the above precautions, you can still have issues.
Always back up your data for that 'Just in case moment' in case stuff happens.
Purchasing a card whose Manufacturer and/or Seller has an excellent return/exchange policy is a plus.
Having a spare SD card available can help you troubleshoot what your issue may be regarding a defective card, formatting issue, device issue, etc.
You may want to take a look at this thread, as it may help you out:

I started to reply to you but my laptop crashed. Seems this s4 just doesn't like that 64gb sandisk. I had an 8gb card laying around and that worked like a charm. The sandisk was foramted exfat out of the box. I formated fat32 and didn't work. I wiped it and left it without format. Put in the phone to let it format the card. It did--fat32 and then still wouldn't read it or even mount it.
I sure don't have anything to lose by trying a different program to format that card. It could come in handy even if I don't use it in the phone. A camera comes to mind.
Oh yeah, it was easeUS that I used to format the card in the first place. Try something else.

Hmmm...
There have been issues with the 64gb SanDisk cards being read by the S4 as well as other devices as described in my previous post, the Ultra cards from what I've read (red & grey) I have the save card, class 10, running without issue on my previous S3 and current S4.
You may want to try the format link above.
You can always purchase another 64GB card on Amazon with a Seller with many, excellent reviews, and go from there, and return what you have to return

This happen to me but with my galaxy s3...turned out sd card was corrupted. Good news was Patriot replaced it with a new one....
If the SD card didn't work in other devices I would seek to exchange it. There are other things I can use it in. I just ordered a 32 GB G skill on new egg. That should do it. The other thing I tried on this sandisk is partition it to 2 smaller ones less than 30 GB each formatted to fat32. Finally it recognized one of those partitions. When I get the other card I'll swap them.

I had the same problem as you OP. I've also downloaded programs to change the format type and stuff, but nothing worked, but I fixed it in a weird way.
My 64gb card didn't work on my samsung. I used many programs to format the card to get it to work, but nothing. What fixed it was....
I took that card and placed it inside my old smartphone (LG G2X). Once placed inside, a pop-up promoted me saying my card was damaged and it will try to fix it. I've tried this on my samsung and it didn't fix it, but once I tried it on this old smartphone, the card for fixed and started to work on my samsung.
I don't know if this could help you, but that's how I fixed my problem.

I don't know what your problem is, then. My 64GB Sandisk card works perfectly in my Galaxy 4.
I don't know what me problem is either. When I have the time I going to return to stock and start over. TWRP won't backup onto the SD card either. Wondering if its behaving this way because I rooted the phone before putting SD card in. Though I have done complete wipe (including internal memory) prior to installing current ROM.

Just curious as to how you got an S4, 1.5 years ago? :cyclops:
Odd SD Card Response
I have recently upgraded from a ATT Samsung Express (Tracfone) moving my 32GB SD Card into the brand new Galaxy S4 I Knoxed up right out of the box just as a matter of principle. I saferooted the phone and installed TWRP which for some reason refuses to load after a few succesful tries and a backup of my system and restore thern reload of TWRP. My concern in this question (unless some knight in shining armour can make sense of my TWRP issue) is that I am not able to write to the samsung branded SD card I removed from the old phone. I cannot create a ROM directory on it when the phone is connected to the PC, nor can I copy files to it. I had hoped to preserve the photos on the card and suppose I can break down and buy an adapter so it will connect to my PC but the point is it "should" work,, no? I cannot create a directory when the phone is connected to the PC nor can I in ES file Explorer. I've also tried to create a directory in root witth ES and am getting the same error. I just want to get the silly balloons off m screen and get google play to run. I am succesfully rooted. I've tried to reload TWRP with Odin only to get the small print int he uper right hand of the screen then no further. I am able to restore my backups thank God.
This is making me batty on a three step process. The card is my main concern right now as I can't load the ROM to it once I get TWRP figured out. Thanks in advance for all the great help I always get. The better I get the more I'll contribute....I promise.

I'm having the same problem. We are not alone, there are numerous threads in the other S4 forums, like this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2281813&page=14
Hello everyone.
My main issue for a few months has been the microSD card. Before I unlocked the bootloader, rooted and installed custom ROMs, my SD card worked fine, which was a SanDisk Ultra Class 10 32GB. After doing those things, my microSD card (or my phone) has been suffering a problem where it either corrupts or it disappears from the configurations of the phone, even after buying a SanDisk Ultra 64GB microSD card. I even unrooted, reinstalled the stock ROM and locked the bootloader but this keep happening.
This is incredibly frustating, because my main use for the card is Spotify, Netflix and Youtube Go! (I like to download everything on the highest quality possible) and every time it corrupts or dissapears I have to format the card and download everything once again. I even tried formatting it for internal storage but it dissapeared out of the blue other day just like it happens when it's setup as external storage.
Does anyone else have the same issue or know any fix to this?
It may be a hardware issue with the sd card reader

And only Motorola would be able to fix it?
A hardware specialist could, it's not just limited to Motorola workers.
I have similar problem/s
A. It takes a lot of time until card is ready
B. After it shows as ready, it can dissappear after a few min.
I u reinsert it, it takes more time, and sometimes fixes the issue.
The weird part. If it is ok, it will work like that until next reboot.
I really dislike this phone.

You don't need to format it
If it says sd card corrupted when you turn the phone on simply remove the sdcard (whilst the phone is still on) wait a few seconds then put it back in again
This works if formatted as external storage - not tried as internal as I don't see benefits in this

It says SD card corrupted while using the cell phone. Like, let's put this situation:
I had downloaded all my Spotify songs in the highest quality they allowed, listened to them while coming back from University on a Tuesday night. I put my G5 to charge during my sleep. When I wake up the next day to go to work, I cannot access any of the music, because suddenly my SD card disappeared from the cell phones (if I go check in the settings, it says 24,59 GB instead of 84,06 GB). After a few minutes, the SD card re-appears but says it's corrupted.
Since creating this thread, I haven't added anything to the SD card and I never got the issue again, so I'm pretty sure it's something with the way Spotify files work.

Have you tried connecting your sd card to the pc and check for the available space ? If it does then copy the data to your pc, format your sd card (ControlPanel>Administrative Tools>Computer Management>Disk manager).
Then re-insert the blank sd card into your phone and see if it shows up.
