[Q] Epic 4G won't boot unless charging, battery show full charge - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Weird problem, did some searching but can't find anything that matches my problem exactly.
My Epic 4G (running Vanir kitkat) shut off the other day when I unplugged it from my car charger to go into the store. I turned it back on and it booted past the Samsung logo, and began the boot animation so I put it back in my pocket. When I pulled it back out a few minutes later it was off again. It took me a few more restarts to realize it wasn't booting past the boot animation. Each time it loaded less and less of the boot animation. Now it will show the Samsung logo and that's it.
It will boot fully into the rom, but only when it's plugged in to a charger. This indicates to me that the battery is shot, except it seems to charge up, and will discharge if I try to continuously boot with it unplugged. Similarly, if I have it plugged in and boot into the rom I can run various android battery apps (including the built in *#*#4636#*#*) and they show the health as "Good" and give me some additional stats on it, including what seems an accurate charge level.
Is it possible the battery life has degraded so badly that 100% charge means half a second? If I unplug while the phone is on it will shut off.
Halp!

Take the battery out and "slap it" (face/back side down) about an inch or so high onto a counter top 3 or 4 times using your fingers. For whatever reason I've been able to bring batteries back to life or extend their life by doing this. I have no idea why it works.
If it doesn't work the first time then try it a several more times. If it doesn't come back to life then it's probably permanently dead.

[Q] Random reboots with battery issues

My issue is that When I am using the phone, normally on dolphin or else a chan viewer, my phone will just turn off. Like the battery died. My phone would have somewhere between a 70-20% charge. Most the time it is above 50%. I will power the phone on and it will say I have 1-3% charge left then shut off normally after.
If I plug it into a charger after that and boot it up (or pull the battery then on a charger and boot it up) the phone will come up fine and say I have 70-20% left. Just depends on where it was at before it shutdown. I can look at my battery usage when it comes up and you can see it go from say 60% to 2% after reboot, then back to 60% once I get it back up. There will be gaps in the usage.
I am currently on Shooter with the freedom kernal. I was on chop suey. I have not reimaged my rom, but I have reinstalled the kernal. I have tried to calibrate my battery and wiped the battery info.
Also my phone charges really slow now too. It can take 20-30 mins to go 5% at times.
I think I just need a new battery.
I think you're right

Nooooooooooo!!! My phone is dead :'(

So I was messing around on my phone this morning when all of a sudden the screen flickered and went out. Last time I remembered seeing the battery charge it was at about 43% so I didn't think it was a dead battery. I tried to turn the screen back on, it would give the short vibration but that's it. I tried many things, battery pulls, boot to d/l mode, boot to recovery, boot to fastboot, plugging in the charger and tried all that too, nothing worked. At one point when I plugged in the charger the battery icon came on and it was empty...let sit on the charger for a few and tried it again. Nothing. Then I attempted to put it in d/l mode and it started to boot up, got through to my homescreen and again, the battery was fully drained so it went out again. I'm running CWM v6.0.1.2 and thought I was screwed since it's widely known that there is/was a CWM bug that wouldn't allow the battery to charge in the phone if it was drained to 0....luckily after about 20min on the charger it was at about 15% and all was well.
Not sure if i'm the last person to find out but just wanted to share with you guys that the CWM bug that prevented the battery from charging in the phone if it was completely dead, is no longer. First thing I did after charging it up fully was calibrated the battery, snake oil or not, and it's now been 3.5hrs and i'm at 98% so it seems like it's working since I was losing at least 1% an hour before.

Battery Stuck at "100% - Not Charging"

After I finished charging my tablet to 100% today, I set it down and went on with my tasks for the day. Checking it here and there, I didn't realize until now that the battery has remained at 100% for the past six hours. I have tried powering down and booting back up as well as plugging the tablet in briefly.
Both the battery menu and Dashclock display "Not charging" instead of "Discharging." When I plug the tablet in, it immediately tells me that it is fully charged.
So needless to say, I'm looking for a solution, preferably simple. Factory reset is a last resort. I'm running an unlocked and rooted Nexus 7 (2013) with stock 4.3, so no third-party ROMs or kernels messing with the battery.
This issue is ironic because I was pretty close to fully-charged last night (80-90%) and when I woke up, I was at ~50% and the battery menu displaying that "Android OS" was hogging 50% of my battery usage. Normally screen comes out on top. I attributed this to my home Wi-Fi router's flakiness, rebooted the router, and the tablet seemed to restore to the correct battery usage levels.
this actually happened to me the other day. left the n7 on the wireless charger overnight and woke up to battery stuck at 100%. at first I thought I was getting some stupid crazy awesome battery life, but then realized it was just stuck.
i did a factory reset to "fix it"...
Nexus 7 1st gen had that same issue. Mine resolves itself after a few charge cycles. Basically the % just gets pinned @ 100% and starts draining down when in reality the tablet might be ~70-80%. Just keep using it and it'll drop. Problem is, since the calibration is off, using it while you have this issue to ~20-30% may cause it to run out of juice and shut off on you since in reality it would be 0%. So I'd use it down a lil bit and put it back on the charger. I just didn't think the new one would have the same problem :\
Have you tried booting into the recovery to see if the battery percent is correctly displayed there?
I ended up booting into TWRP, where the battery displayed as 100%. It may have just been some sweet battery life, but it actually seems like it was stuck, or at least discharging at a very slow rate. Down to 87% currently, so it was fixed after I booted into recovery. Thankfully, just a hiccup and no factory reset necessary.
Experienced another random reboot today, but lucky me, I get to save that for another thread!

So this has become a common problem for me now. every time i fully charge the N7 and leave it plugged in the battery percentage gets stuck. rebooting in recovery gets it unstuck but throws off the calibration/percentage.

Phone was 25% battery, But 50% battery after reboot?

Hey guys, I've had my phone for 4 or so months now and I always charge it while my phone is off and never had any charging/battery issues until today, I decided to charge my phone while it's on and it charged up to 25% and I restarted my phone without removing it from the charger and after it booted back it it's showing 50%, I restarted a few times, tried a cold boot, it's still 50%.
Is this a known issue with this phone? does anyone know what's causing this? I've never had this happen before.
EDIT: After this happened I ran my battery to 0% so I can attempt a battery calibration and when I poped it on the charger it showed my battery was actually 0% and showed a yellow hazard triangle thing (normally it only drops to 1% and there has never been a yellow triangle before)
Sometimes the Android system can incorrectly report a battery charged. I have had it happen to me on my Nexus by about 10%, but have not had it happen to me on my G3. I would not worry about it too much if it only happened to you once. If in continues you to jump around in battery percentage, then I would suggest getting a replacement battery. Keep in mind to try not to leave it charging for very long after reaching 100%, from my experience it can effect a battery's ability to hold a charge if that is done repeatedly. Which means do not leave it charging overnight while you are sleeping. Also I would not suggest running it until 0%, I would imagine a sudden shut down of the Android Operating system is not a healthy thing for it either. Just like it is not good to go up to a computer and just pull the power cord.

Thanks for the input.
I never leave my phone on the charger while I sleep since it only drops 1% while I sleep. My phone actually only goes on the charger like 3 times a month
I know it's not good to fully drain the battery very much, I was just draining it to attempt a battery calibration in the os. And when I do this my phone usually only drops to 1% then dies, but all of a sudden it dropped to 0% this time and showed a big yellow triangle with a big exclamation mark in it
Anyways I reflashed my rom in hopes I can flush the problem out. In 4 months of owning this phone I've never seen this warning before.
This is almost exactly what happened with my old phone (Samsung Captivate Glide). If this continues to happen, it is one of the first signs of the battery failing. But if this is a one time thing, I wouldn't worry about it.
In my case, the battery was going bad. It started going from any % battery, down to 0 instantly, forcing a shutdown. After rebooting, It would show a decent charge (~60% most of the time), but would do the same thing within 5 minutes. At first it only acted up like this once a month, but it became more and more frequent that it happened every day, after using the phone for only 15 minutes. The only fix is to get a replacement battery.

tyvm, This is extremely helpful info to keep in mind. Now that you mention it I have seen the battery kinda swollen up a couple times when it got hot, only ever so slightly but I did notice it.
If my issue persists i'll defnitly try a new battery, thanks for the tip

[Q] Battery level detection issues with HTC One M8 (Sprint)

A few weeks ago I rooted my phone with the latest version of TWRP and installed Liquid Smooth as my OS. I haven't had any problems with it until today, when it died (as expected, since I did not charge it for a few days) and I began to charge it from 0%. I began to charge it and noticed that it charges ridiculously slow even from a wall outlet. The bigger problem is that the OS detects a different battery level as the recovery tool. For example, I can leave my OS booted up while charging for 30 minutes and it will display something like 20% battery. Then if I shut it off the battery icon and the recovery tool (TWRP) will display anything ranging from 0-20%. It is random, too. One second it could be 15%, then next time I reboot it might say 5%. The problem then is that when I boot up the OS, it uses the percentage that the recovery tool displays. So if I shut off the phone when the battery displayed 30%, then next time I boot it up it will display the battery number from the recovery tool (anything from 0-30%). I have been charging and rebooting my phone for an hour now and it should say something like 60% but it only reads 21%. Is there any way to fix this? What happens when my battery really reaches 100% but my phone keeps charging it because it thinks it is lower? Is this dangerous? Any help would be appreciated.
