I've been trying diff ROM's on my Samsung Gio ...but every ROM i try i have the same issue with my data connection...data won't work until i toggle it.
I tried 2 versions of "Particle ROM". It's a GREAT one! I would have to toggle airplane mode ON, then OFF to get the data to work. If the screen timed out, I had to do it again.
I just installed GioPro 1.4 ROM and my data is also wonky. I have to toggle it still..
I had NO issue with the stock ROM. I didn't back it up before flashing. I didn't want it any way..it was practically useless. Install one or 2 apps and you were out of memory. Useless!
Any ideas?
Stock rom useless ?
I have stock rom and has a very good performance and battery life. Why are you saying this ?
BTW, those 2 roms you tried i think they have that data bug, it's not your fault.

I know those 2 are in developement (in fact, are there any ROM's for the Gio that aren't? ) ...i don't have time to fully investigate each thoroughly, however, skimming through the forums, i don't recall seeing anyone with this issue. Maybe I'm wrong?
The stock ROM was terrible on battery, and I ran out of memory after installing a few essential apps. I didn't even have room for the upgrades when they were available. I found myself having to install apps, use them, the uninstall them so I could install others that I needed, then uninstall those to re-install the ones I previously uninstalled, and so on and so on and so on....
Are there any complete ROM's?
rom
have you tried using a stock rom with phiezx custom kernel? I'm using [Kernel]Custom kernel for stockrom with alot of feature [Update: January 31, 2012] and a2sd works as well as swap and cpu toggle. so far i'm happy with it perhaps its what you're looking for. make sure to flash clockwork mod so you can make backups and restore at any time to the previous rom if unhappy.

If you root your device then you can easily overcome this problem on stock rom. You'll have to make an ext partition on your sd card and then download link2sd from market. Then using link2sd, just keep system files on internal and move all apps and their lib/dex files to your sdcard's ext.
On my stock 2.3.3 I had 75+ apps installed with still 100MB free on internal.

Bumping!
Really need some help on this...
Tried many diff ROM's now, with same result. Data only works intermittently. Some ROMs have required my intervention to get data to work (temporarily work), while other ROMs require no intervention; data goes on and off by itself.
Do i need to flash a new radio? Where would I get a radio for the Canadian BELL variant of the Gio. Upon bootup, the screen says it's S5660, no M, or L, or V, etc.
Today I installed the ICS from here:
http://www.blogotechblog.com/2012/01/how-to-install-ice-cream-sandwich-on-samsung-galaxy-gio-s5660/
Still same thing is happening. This ROM is one the one's in which the data turns itself off and on. It happens to frequent to be useable.
I've tried several of the more popular Gio ROM's.
I REALLY NEED SOME HELP HERE PLEASE.
I'm stumped!
Thanks!
So, just reverted back to STOCK and there have been no issues with data connection.
Why won't this thing work with any other ROM?
I've used popular ROM's that have NOT been known to have issues with the data connection.
I don't understand.

Check your model number against the base rom used to make the custom. For example, I have an SHW-M290K, so GT-S5560 roms cause bluetooth, wifi and sensors to not work.

Not sure...do they often list that info? Will check tho.
Up and running now...
Here's what I done (sounds like a real Redneck?)
Had to flash the original ROM back on it. Make sure that data connection worked...and it was ROCK SOLID...
WIPE EVERYTHING! Factory reset code *2767*3855#,
Flashed CWM for KANG's ICS ROM, flashed KANG's ICS ROM, wipe everything, (factory reset code doesn't seem to work in ICS).
Data was flakey for the 1st few minutes, but now seems to be ROCK SOLID.

I was thinking of using Titanium Back-up to remove unnecessary files and bloatware on my phone. The problem is, what can be safely removed and still have my phone function properly?
I'm running stock 4.3 rooted.
Thanks,

Your welcome, I'm glad to have helped. You might want to check out the Aroma Installer as I believe it lets you choose which Stock Apps you want to keep. I might be mistaken on this but I'm pretty sure it's right. I know that some Custom Stock based ROMs use the Aroma Installer though. And sorry I don't have a link for that but you can find the Stock based ROMs in the Android Development thread.

I use Titanium to freeze things first before uninstalling and make backups before removing. I found the best way to debloat was to start from scratch; backup apps+data, flash a minimal ROM, minimal gapps, and just install stuff as and when I actually needed to - I have very little running or available that doesn't get used and tons of memory free to use when needed. No Samsung apps to be seen at all.

Stock ROM have GApps included, so you can't flash custom GApps only if you want to root and flash custom ROM.

I prefer SlimKAT to others at the moment and I have no issues with it at all. (I have a Slim version 7.4 that is not available generally at the moment - just testing it. The latest 7.2.1 has no reported issues). That is not to say you will like it or that everything will work ok for you, but its fun trying out these things. Most people use other gapps such as PA or BaNkS I think but the Slim gapps I use currently are from the SlimROM web site here.
Just to clarify, SlimKAT has no gapps included at all. It has a basic Nova launcher but very little else in the way of applications.
thanks mate, iam running slimkat for a few days and seems to be very battery friendly.

Not sure whether to post here or in development... First of all, thanks... You have done an amazing job in such a short time. I'm really impressed and believe that I can use this rom as my daily driver. You asked what wasn't working... For me, NFC won't turn on, titanium will restore data but not "apps and data" nor just the apps alone. Reinstalling a few apps I got through amazon doesn't work (it only allows me the option of "open" not install or reinstall, and pressing open doesn't do anything). It took awhile after flashing before the phone function seemed stable, but now it's OK. I'm missing some of the features of cm11 (like the larger grid for pattern unlock), but I'm sure those and more will come. Btw, I'm using the pa-gapps 5 alpha. Again thanks, and lmk if you want me to post any other problems here or in your development thread.

Will update if i run into problems happy flashing
Im having a issue with something draining the battery really quickly but nothing is showing up under battery. Any suggestions?
Question: are you planning to keep CM12 for jfltetmo separate from the other versions of the S4, or are you going to have a unified ROM like CM11? The reason I ask is that I prefer TWRP to CWM, but I couldn't use TWRP on the nightlies once they became unified.
Thanks dcd1182.

They are staying separate. S4 and also S3 were all un-unified from each other and will all be separate individual variant based.
Two issues: 1st. For some reason I have no access to my SD card. Is there something I need to do on my end to fix it? 2nd. Is there anyway I can use the home button to wake the device. Other than that it's a pretty perfect rom. Thanks!
Can you dirty flash updates?
Probably not ideal but I dirty flashed 11/24 over 11/22 this morning and barely a hiccup. Only problem I've had thus far is orbot running breaks data on LTE and WiFi but reboot and disable orbot fixed it. That could be completely unrelated honestly and I don't expect anyone would look into it given I did dirty flash. You'll probably get little help from a Dev on a problem knowing you've not done a clean flash is usually my biggest problem.

In 2009 Google sent a cease and disist order to cyanogenmod. Google apps are not legally allowed to be added to aosp based roms. Period. And as a former staff member of Android Forums, your aosp roms posts would of been removed til gapps were removed by mods and would of been educated on why you couldn't do it.
ok but
I see no law saying that as well other people do it as well my roms require them implemented because thats how i coded them as well cyanogen mod is just a open source project and not associated with google because google doesnt approve of it because its in their terms as well since cm is an open source by gpl i believe theirs no laws against editing or redesigning them even on base roms because src is available to grab so i see no act under the law that states it so either way implementing apps in the rom is like installing gapps from another source, it just has them installed so that you dont have to install them yourself so until i see news or a book of laws stating it that its illegal then its not illegal to implement them and as well has to be passed by congrees and othe excustive to become illegal witch i highly doubt, plus my roms are not based off of cyanogenmod, also furthermore if they did say that then they would actullay make it illegal to make custom roms at all if they said that google would even say its piracy even if its from a base rom or custom im not pointing out faxts im pointing out my opinions

Good evening everyone. I recently got this phone from the Black Friday deal at Best Buy for 80$ and rooted and did all of that without much problem. I installed the Wicked ROM without any issues, and tested it out but I prefer AOSP. But when I flash Cyanogen or Bliss, I lose all of the mobile data , the baseband, here I include a screenshot. I have flashed a stock ROM once again, activated it again without any problem, but when I try to flash an AOSP ROM again I lose everything. Is there anything I can do about that? I have searched the forums and Google and found no solutions. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Did you check to make sure that the md5 matched? Anytime I've had that happen either the md5 didn't match, or I needed to use a different kernel. My Goto kernel for AOSP ROMs has been BMS.

Thanks for the tip, tried flashing Cyanogenmod with that kernel and the same thing happens, I lose all of the settings related to the Baseband, Modem and IMEI. I checked the md5 and it matches completely. I have no idea what is happening. For now I settled into the Conquest Singulalirty ROM which provides an ASJOP look but on offical firmware. But still I would like to know how to solve this problem so if anyone has any tips that would be greatly appreciated.
Is your phone the L710T model by any chance? I had the same problem with every rom I tried EXCEPT for Gummy 3.0. For some reason Gummy 3.0 recognizes my baseband/modem but if I try Gummy 4.0 or any other AOSP rom, no baseband.

Flash the file here: http://androidforums.com/threads/mo...apn-fix-wip-cm-aosp-4-4-x.840298/#post6516416
It will modify necessary files in the system to allow you to connect. Also, dial ##72786# to reactivate after flashing. That all worked for me on my Virgin S3 running Carbon. Good luck!
The SPH-L710T is what was on sale at BestBuy for $80 (as I found out after running into a similar problem), and it's a pain in the ass. It seems that TW ROMs are the only ones that don't break the radio... and the M10 snapshot of CM11 apparently (except rotation is backwards). I'm looking for a fix as well.
It seems that all of this can be fixed by a custom kernel, but there's no AOSP/CM kernel (that I know of) that fixes both.
I wish I knew something about kernel development...

That is exactly the one that I have, the 80$ Best Buy from Black Friday. Yeah, I tried what metalhead131 said and it did not work. Hmmm, M10 snapshot worked for you? I will try it out them to see how it goes. In what way did it break the rotation? It does not rotate or is it inaccurate? It is a pain in the ass that we have so many ROMS available but we can't use them. I have been using the Conquest Singularity by Moon Knight. The one that is here in XDA is kinda of outdated but if you Google it you will find his blog with the latest update. He created an AOSP looking ROM but it is TW underneath. That combined with Gravity Box has satisfied me for now, but I hate no being able to flash AOSP ROMS. I know nothing about kernel development, but if someone wants to help with this I can provide anything they need in order to fix this problem with this T version of the phone.
I will try to take the kernel of the M10 and flash it with another ROM to see if the rotation works. I will update as soon as I do that.

Yeah, the radio worked with the M10 snapshot. I was able to get the latest version of ParanoidAndroid to work with the M10 snapshot kernel as well.
When I say rotation is broken I mean when you hold it sideways, it rotates the wrong way, so it's upside down.

Excellent. Thanks for the good news! That doesn't bother me that much, so I will do that with the Bliss ROM that I wanted to install. I will keep investigating and trying things to see if we can fix the rotation issue. I will keep the thread updated.
Semi-Fix for the rotation issue on the M10 kernel.
After checking some apps out, I found one that worked well for the rotation problem using AOSP ROMS on the troublesome SPH-L710T. The app is called Adaptive Rotation Lock and is available for free on the Play Store. What it does is that a little button pops up everytime you rotate your phone, and if you don't click that button the screen will not rotate. So once you put your phone horizontallly, click on the button that pops up to allow the phone to rotate upside-down, then rotate the phone so it is not upside-down anymore, but do not click the button, so it stays in the correct rotation. It is a little cumbersome, but it beats always being upside down while using the phone horizontally! I think this is a good option while we find out how to fix this issue in the kernel.

Greeting kdude63. Thanks to your tips I was able to test many roms and as you settled on Paranoid Android. The only problem I have right now is that intermittently point I lose cell coverage for like 2 minutes, but then I get it back. Does that happen on your phone?
I have also tried many kernels to see if I find another one that works but no go. I am still using the M10 boot.img. Have you found another one that works?
And thanks for helping out with the ODIN tar for this phone! It makes me feel a lot more safe when I am experimenting.

I don't currently use PA or CM as my daily driver, so I don't know. (I don't like dealing with the rotation issues)
I was testing some other kernels earlier, none of them worked before I got careless and accidentally flashed an i9300 kernel, so I can't use my phone for the time being.

Yep, I flashed it normally. Using Philz I got the Wicked 8 zip file and a couple of the addons that are available without any problems but since I don't like the Touchwiz UI too much I am currently running Conquest. Maybe try the full Wicked 8 zip? I did not try the barebones, but I can confirm that Wicked 8 works on the T model. It has the rotation issue but a couple of post ago I described how to get around that. Let me know if it works!

Let me know if it works!

i was finally able to flash bare-bones i had to flash the updated kernel i used for Conquest beta 10
I'm glad! At least we can use Touchwiz based ROMs while we can find a way to create a kernel that is completely compatible with the T model. Is your rotation working correctly?

Yes rotation is working and with the next few updates on CM side they will be fully working on the T model cause CM already updated a fix for the T model
I got spooked when the baseband disappeared and rotation was not working. Went back to stock. Of course you also seem to need the special 2.7 twrp in order to mount system. But the price was right.
