On LK3 Should I up to new BL/BB? - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

I am pretty overwhelmed by all the searching I have been doing on the different basebands and modem upgrades.. Most people seem to want to downgrade in the posts I have been finding.
I have not ran stock TouchWiz for over a year, I believe I was still on 4.1.1 or 4.1.2 back then.
Currently, I am running a custom ROM (GZ Rom Validus or Spirit Rom) which are both on 4.4.4. My current Baseband and Bootloader are LK3.
It was suggested in on of the G+ Communities I update my BB and BL, is NE4 the current one? Should I still go about this? and if so, Which guide should I follow? I have the current CWM Recovery installed. Do I use enewman's guide from the General Discussion? Do I need to install the full stock 4.4.2 firmware or can I just flash the modems and bootloader?
I have never installed 4.3 OTA update, have never had Knox on my phone.
Is knox that big of a deal? Does it make things that much tougher to get around things?
Sorry, if this has been covered before, and I have searched the forums and done a bit of reading, but I think I may have read too much and just confused myself further..

If youre warranty is up, knox doesnt really matter, except that you cannot downgrade to older firmware. Most who want to just want to use the free sim unlock.
There will always be people who disagree, but I personally feel updating is a good idea. Better performance, more features....thats up to each person to decide though.
If you decide to update, everything you need is in General.
Ive linked to some threads in this post

Thanks will go through that tonight..

I agree with him

Lol, oops.. just flashed the MJB Firmware.. I read about what an unlock was for.. We had been with Centennial before AT&T bought them and are still on AT&T today, so probably over 14 years and never really thought about changing.. Guess it would have been useful if I was going to sell my phone, but I can't seem to let things go sometimes Still have my iPhone 3GS, which I probably could sold when I was done with it, but I thought I would need it again sometime (I didn't)
Anyway, DocHoliday, I came back here because I started to go through this thread you linked to in the link you posted above (enewman17's thread for updating to 4.4.2 (high success rate) http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2789917
I decided to not flash TWRP and just flash the MJB in his Step 3 in the CWM Recovery I already had.. Then I stopped and read a few more pages of that thread, then I saw you posted this "Do not flash an ota over a custom modified rom. The chances of it going way wrong are too great. OTA's patch existing files on the device, and if those files have been modified there's a very good chance either the patch just wont take, or it'll really screw things up."
In my OP I stated I was already running a custom rom, so had a finished that guide, I probably would have messed something up somewhere right?
So I guess, where do I go from here? I am on the MJB firmware bootloader modem (that I flashed from enewmans guide) right now running Spirit Rom Android 4.4.4. I don't care about going back to stock, I want to maintain root and continue using non-touchwiz ROMS.. Though I did consider using a TW Rom a few months ago..

Ok, no problem there! Use enewman17's other thread here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2808654
It will update your base firmware (bootloader/modem/etc) without touching your current rom.

Thanks.. Didn't see that thread..

Help me flash a T-Mobile S3

This will be my first time flashing on a T-Mobile phone. My friends have an S3 stock right now. They want the latest rooted stock ROM. I don't know where to start. Do I need to unlock the bootloader? Is there an Odin executable file that will flash the complete ROM? All I see are zips for full stock rooted which I would have to use CWM or TWRP. If that's the only way, I suppose I would have to root and install a recovery to install the latest rooted stock ROM. Any help is appreciated and thanks!
I read the stuff on this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1949687, just don't know where to start.

Read up on how to root your device first, I used an ODIN file which rooted my device. I then installed Rom Manager to get the latest CWM recovery. You can also use Goo Manager if you want TWRP. After you get a recovery and root, you are pretty much set for any ROM you'd like to flash.

Start by flashing the root66 firmware in Odin from that thread. Everything you need should be there. Including how to use Odin. Just gotta be willing to put the time into reading. Don't take shortcuts until you are very comfortable with the process. Even then, be careful doing so.

As Doc said, read, i am new here and honestly i rooted my phone easily without any problems, it was my first time owning an android, first time trying to root one and how i got through? I read, and i mean i spent hours reading until i feel confident that i understand and everything is covered in "rooting". I plan to do this in steps.
I "know" how to root so if someone say, hey root my phone, i can do that. Other things like flashing new roms etc? I'm reading up now so in a few days i will be trying out new roms and all those other weird name things that these guys do!
You just have to plan on taking your time, Rome (roms either lol) wasn't built in a day and you weren't either, it took you nine months (i would assume)
PS Its fun once you get the hang of it! Take your time...

Thanks for the replies! I didn't stated it before but I am very familiar with rooted and flashing ROMS though not on T-Mobile that's why I was asking. I have previously flashed on Sprint and now on Verizon, so I have rooted and flashed custom ROMS a lot. Anyways my friends finally got some free time to come around to flash their phones tomorrow. I am going to start by doing a factory reset and apply the appropriate root66 - PreRooted Firmware that matches the currently installed ROM. Then I am going to install TWRP via GooManager and go from there. I don't know if their phones are still on 4.1.1, but if so, I am updating them to 4.1.2 using the following:
UVDLJC - UVDMD5
Type: Official
Version: 4.1.2 JB
Date: May 13, 2013
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1949687
Then I am not sure yet, but I will have to update the Baseband Modem with this file:
Baseband: UVMD5
From Build: UVDMD5
OS: JB 4.1.2
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1880987
Release Date: May. 13, 2013
They want latest Stock Rom, but Rooted, so please correct me if I am wrong with what I plan to do, thanks!
dja2k
Just flash the root66 UVDMD5 firmware. Then you're on the latest stock, already rooted. Ill never recommend using an ota if there's another option available.
And you won't need to update the modem. It may not be the best one for you anyway. Just because its the latest released, doesn't mean anything when it comes to modems.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
Oh my bad, I didn't see that the firmware is the full ROM. Ok but the modems are interchangeable, so I can flash it and if it doesn't work better, I can go back to the one it had.
dja2k
Yup. And in case you don't know, the firmware includes the modem too. We have a lot to try, so if you're not hapoy with one try the next.

Which is the current stable released 4.3 ROM that I can flash on top of the 4.1.2 stock ROM I flashed previously? There are several ROM's and have warnings like this one below so I can't figure which one to flash.

[Q] Anything out there for UCDMG2?

I've searched, googled, read stickies, etc...
I have a US ATT S3 but when I got to About Phone and look at Build Number I don't have UCALEM or UCALG1 like all the posts say I should. Instead I have UCDMG2 which i can't find anywhere on this site.
My phone is about a year old (got it last december) and is 100% virgin. I've never modified it or even rooted it.
All i'm wanting to do is put Slimbean on it but following the how to guides isn't helping.
Even tried following the Noob guide stickied on the forums (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=18021600) but it too tells me that i should have a different build number than i do.
Is it possible to modify my UCDMG2?
MG2 was an OTA patch/update to Android 4.1.2 from UCDLK3. No official firmware package was ever released to any of the firmware sites. You can use CF-Autoroot to root (it will trip your flash counter but if your device is over a year old, it won't matter).
The ones you listed were the ones for Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0.4. UCDLK3 was the 4.1.1 update and as said above, UCDMG2 was the OTA update for 4.1.2. The reasons the guides ask for an older version, is because they are probably outdated, so the easiest way to root would be CF Auto Root which takes only about a minute.
Thanks guys. After rooted, is it safe to flash? Since searching showed me NOTHING about MG2 I'm a little skeptical.
Yes its completely safe and practically required for any 4.3 ROM.

Sorry for sounding dumb about this. Would any of these work?
Things were so much more uncomplicated on my Captivate and Inspire
After rooting and installing a custom recovery(I like twrp cause it reminds me of 4ext recovery), you should be able to flash away.

What exactly can I do after MK3 OTA?

After reading many of the various threads posted on this forum, I understand the desire and need to limit useless posts. If this happens to be one, please delete it. I have been rooting phones and using info from this site for several years and early on decided not to waste XDA servers space.
So having said that, I seem to not be alone in having returned to stock and getting the Knox update. I have (thanks to the help of some folks on these forums) been able to unbrick and return to a stock MK3, mostly de-Knoxed system on my Sprint GS3. Where can I find a thread that lists my current options for using custom Roms safely? Perhaps a sticky thread specifically addressing this issue?
Thanks,
Carl
If you have taken the 4.3 ota you can only flash 4.3 touchwiz roms and the recent aosp based roms
Sent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk
That really is the only restriction now. You have to stay on 4.3 ROMs. There are some good ones out there. My current favorite is MOAR 7.1
Not true. You can flash any ROM you like. You simply cannot downgrade or change the boot loader. As long as you do not try to ODIN an earlier stock .tar, you will be safe. android version is irrelevant.

@eletendre84 is absolutely correct; bootloader does not equal modem does not equal Android build number. Knox is only scared of one thing, and that is being replaced by a non-Knox bootloader. Period.

[Q] Galaxy S3 downgrade from android 4.3 to 4.1.2

I have a T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S3 (SGH-T999) and I made the mistake of allowing an upgrade??? to android 4.3 which has been very unstable for me. T-Mobile, Samsung, and Google all say that there are no updates to 4.3 and I can’t downgrade, so basically I’m out of luck.
Can I downgrade 4.3 to 4.1.2 without bricking my phone and hopefully without voiding my warranty? If so, please give me some instructions. I downloaded Odin 3.07 and firmware: root66_TMO_T999UVDMD5.7z. Thanks a million.
I don't think it's possible to downgrade anymore due to Knox. There was a thread talking about it

if you flash the root66 of the md5 firmware via odin after you have already upgraded to 4.3 you will HARD BRICK your phone. Taking the 4.3 ota updates your bootloader and flashing anything other than 4.3 in odin will wreck your life.
You need to download the root66mjc firmware here:
http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23212708291682181
And flash it in odin. Then from there install a custom recovery and download a rom of your choosing and the compatible modem. I recommend you download the md5 modem. Then you're gonna wanna boot into recovery and flash the rom and the modem only (kernels are ok of course) JUST NO BOOTLOADERS. I don't even know if you can do that in recovery but trying to mess with the new BL will brick your face I mean phone.
full steps?
so does anyone have any full list of steps and links on where to get the modems and all to downgrade 4.3 with knox down to 4.1.2

I was referring to the 3 persons who responded to the OP's question similar to yours. @jtl_777's response is pointing to the 4.3 Firmware.
Its more implied in this thread than stated matter of factly. This thread is several months old, and I know your question has been asked countless times in many different threads, much more recently than in this one.
I suggest you read the stickies in each section. Just by doing that you will find all firmware and modems and more. You will also find that the answer is no, you cannot downgrade your full firmware from 4.3. And you never will be able to.
If your having problems I suggest flashing the latest 4.3 build via Odin, then factory resetting. Start over clean with minimal restoring of backups (only the essentials).
Every time an update comes out there are people who have problems. The majority are solved by doing what I just said because most bugs are caused by using old data created by old apps on the new build.
Even if you could downgrade, chances are youd run into even more issues and still have to factory reset.

thanks but I read online and some youtube videos showing that people have gone from 4.3 back to 4.1.2, just trying to make the phone the way it was before any updates were done and wondering if anyone knows the proper steps without bricking the phone.

great thanks so much for your help, can I flash the recovery via odin mobile app or is it safer to do it via pc?
Safer via PC.
It is possible via Mobile Odin. But that's one of the partitions I don't want to mess with when Phone is Booted/
If you know how to use Mobile Odin then it should be fine. I agree that its better to use pc odin if youre not familiar with Mobile Odin. However, it actually doesnt flash the recovery while booted. It flashes the flash kernel which is MO's temp recovery. It then boots to this and flashes. (So, perseus is right in that regard. But I personally love Mobile Odin and find it extremely useful and consider it safe unless you are brand new to all of this).
In fact Mobile Odin is another way you can flash 4.1.2. Itll flash the firmware, but only the system, kernel, recovery and modem. (I didnt bring this up previously because I didnt want to confuse, or go too far too fast).
If youre thinking about flashing recovery via MO, though, you can also instead just flash the rom you found. No need to flash the recovery unless you just want to. Put the rom in the update.zip slot and itll flash just fine.
If any of this is confusing, just stick with the original plan for now. The rest will come easy if you dont rush things.
One more thing, while you can usually update stock without wiping, you may find you have to factory reset after downgrading as the old system was not built for using data created on a new version.

thanks for all the help.. had to do the wipe since it kept showing the samsung logo but after that it booted just fine.

Is your phone sim unlocked? If it isn't, you could flash back to a stock AT&T 4.1.1 ROM, unlock, and run OTA updates until your have the latest ROM on your phone. This approach requires more time but it is the simplest and least risky in my opinion.
So basically you're saying to flash back to unrooted stock. And then keep using att updates until I get to the latest one, and then I should be on ne4 automatically?? Not sure if I'm understanding this correctly.

Yes, flash back to stock and keep running ota until you hit the latest release.
If you have warranty left on your phone, updating, rooting, and loading a custom recovery will change the warranty bit from 0 to 1 which voids the remaining warranty.
