LTE question - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

Now I'm a seasoned user I'm I'm blown away by the fact rooting and unlocking the boot loader required no computer and only took two minutes! This is my first nexus device and I was wondering, can I only use stuff from the LTE section or could I use kernels for the regular nexus 7? Don't want to make a noon mistake

You have to use roms and kernels built for the LTE model(deb)

I've received this question a lot from users across the globe and wrote an educational application, All About Root, posted in the Android Market for free with a section dedicated to this question.
Specifically for the Galaxy Nexus, I actually have not yet rooted this device yet, for the same reasons you've already given.
I do plan on rooting soon, probably within the next few days. At any point in time, if you want to start doing serious tweaking, more than likely you'll need root access.
The most common reason I've seen so far is, Android 4.0.3 was released in AOSP but we either have 4.0.1 or 4.0.2 loaded on our devices. Some users want the latest and in order to load 4.0.3 they have to at least unlock the device, not necessarily root.
Not sure if you're using the GSM or CDMA version of the device but in the future the OTAs might not be released at the same time to keep up with the latest AOSP version.
Hope that helps!

How do you "root the hell out of" a phone? It's either rooted, or it's not

Why do you need convincing? Some apps need root. If you need to do something that requires root, then root the device.
Unlocking the bootloader is probably the real question... with that done, you can install custom ROMs and custom recovery, or root the stock ROM. Unlocking wipes the device though so it's probably better to do it sooner than later, even if you don't want to do any of those things yet.

I was looking through Roms and I have another question. Why install a custom rom if it ****s up your phones wifi signal and network strength? And video and the browser has issues. How stupid can you be this is a great phone as is no need to root or install roms.

I personally wouldn't install a ROM if it affected my wifi or signal in a negative way. Or if I didn't know that and it did, I would uninstall it.
It definitely is a great phone as-is, but it's a bit ignorant to call people stupid just because you don't see a need to root yours or install a custom ROM. Custom ROMs offer features not present in stock ROMs. If the stock ROM has all that you need, there's no need to replace it. On the other hand, some custom ROMs have features I like that stock doesn't, so to get those features I install the custom ROM.
I had CyanogenMod on my Nexus One (and still do). It has things like OpenVPN, notification power widget, trackball wake, and a lot of other tweaks that I found useful.
You need root for apps like wifi kill and wifi tether and overclock, rom manager/nandroid backup. If you ain't gonna use em then don't root, but certainly don't call people names for doing so. Getting the latest version of the OS is not the reason to root. If anything, on the Nexus devices it slows this process.

[Q] Partitions

I'm coming from a Sprint GSII where the kernal and recovery are on the same partition, which was very confusing when flashing ROM's and it would overwrite the recovery.
Is the recovery on a partition all by itself on this phone?

Yes, and most Android devices follow the Android standard by making the recovery partition and the boot kernel partitions separate.
Not sure why the GSII still used that design as I first saw it used on the Samsung Moment, 2 yrs ago and it was very frustrating to deal with as a developer and user.
Hopefully Samsung stays away from that poor model and follows the Android standard other manufacturers such as HTC and Google devices such as the Nexus S and Galaxy Nexus use.
Hope that helps!

Thanks for the reply and the clarification. Yeah coming from the EVO and the EVO 3D, that confused the hell out of me when I first went to flashing things. It was so weird I just stopped flashing things and just went to a stock, rooted ROM. Such a poor setup for such an amazing piece of hardware. I'm glad to know that this phone is set up properly.

GSM Google Nexus coming tomorrow, what should I do immediately?

Hey everyone,
Im relatively confused about this phone since there are so many threads that are for the other versions(VZW/Sprint/Intnl).
What Im looking for is any help(direction?) as to what I should do first on my Nexus that I ordered from Google Play.
What is the first thing I should do(root or unlock bootloader?) and what should I download(Roms or kernals?). Any links to said advice would be much appreciated also.
Many thanks in advance.
Put sim in . Then battery then back cover . Then best of all turn it on

Thank you for the obvious and the laugh. However, I really am looking to get past the two weeks of thread reading, and get guidance from those who have this Google Play version with working roms and stuff.
unlock the bootloader, you can decide to root or flash whatever later. unlocking the bootloader does a factory reset which is why you want to do it before you do any setup or add anything to the phone

Ok, now I saw this, and I might sound newbish here, but the title of that thread is for the VZA/Sprint/GSM versions of the phone. To my understanding, even the unlocked GSM version originally sold is not the same as the current one in the Google Play store.
If the link above will work for all the phones including mine then that is what I was looking for.

Lucky for you even if u unlock the boot loader after u sign in and sync all ur stuff your data won't be erased... something about the Takju version that allows users to unlock boot loader without wiping any data =P

It will work. Yours is still GSM, yakju, takju, yakjuux, whatever. Its still GSM.
first thing you should is jump up and down, and pat yourself on the back for being tied to your carrier for a phone upgrade
I would unlock the bootloader before anything else...
Then if you're feeling brave (and before you start configuring the device to your liking) flash a third-party ROM based on 4.0.3/4 (The most recent ICS versions):
l'd recommended Cyanogenmod 9 nightlies if you like to be on the bleeding edge (Although you might have to get used to flashing EVERY day, which isn't so bad once you get used to it)
Or, moving to something like LiquidSmooth (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1555667)
or
EaglesBlood ROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1388728).
Each of which will bring different things to the table, you'll have to do your research as to which one you'd like if you go that way.
Alternatively, just stay on stock ROM and enjoy your phone the way they intended you to...
^ Thank you for that. I was actually confused as to what order Im supposed to do things(root, unlock bootloader...Rom...Kernal??)
Ive seen a lot of positive reviews for an AOKP rom and a Frances(?) Kernal. Anyone agree they make a good match?

You unlock the bootloader first because it wipes your phone, SD card as well.
Flash clockwork mod recovery.
Flash a custom rom and kernel.
Sorted.
The guide I wrote (previously linked) details how you can also back up your applications (not that you'll really have any to begin with...but if you decide to wait) without root.
Then unlock and restore...and backup again with titanium for all future restorations.

[Q] Only Root Galaxy Nexus without erasing any data

HI,
I've using my Galaxy Nexus (GSM) for a long time, but i want to get Root access, i've been reading a lot and it seems if i use Galaxy Nexus Toolkit it will delete all my data, there's any way to root it without losing any data?
Thanks a lot! :good: :fingers-crossed:

no.
you have to unlock your bootloader (no matter which method you use, also, dont use a toolkit, use the sticky at the top of the forum) which wipes your data. period.

I did a root of my Galaxy Nexus, when I flashed the new 4.1. It did work fine. When the phone did the small update to 4.1.2, can it be true that it rolled back the root? My phone don't seem to be rooted anymore.
Isn't it possible to get root permissions again, without loosing data?

if your bootloader is unlocked, reflash the supersu.zip
otherwise, you have to unlock the bootloader and it will wipe your device.

Hep hep! The lock is unlocked. Perfect.
When I receive the 4.2 update (my phone is yakju), I will root again. Thank you for your help, I appreciate it a lot.
Similar thing happened to me. I was messing around with different ROM's for some time but in the end went back to the stock ROM. My phone now shows unlocked and using the stock recovery (as described here http://forums.androidcentral.com/google-samsung-galaxy-nexus/243004-recovery-mode.html).
The stock recovery offers 4 options: reboot, apply update from ADB or USB, wipe.
How do I "reflash the supersu.zip" from here? I want to avoid wiping as everything is set up as I like it now, and because it isn't rooted I can't back it up, catch 22 thing

I'm sorry, I didn't know there was a rule against that. I searched Google for the problem and this thread came up closest.
Well sorry if I am not a genius like you who know everything already. I thought that forums like this was for asking questions.
It would be nice if instead of just being mean and nasty you'd offer some constructive suggestions, such as would installing a custom recovery wipe the phone? The distinction between the boot loader and the custom recovery isn't clear to me.

Sarcastic, aren't we? Look, XDA is first and foremost a developer site for developers to develop. Answering and asking questions about that development is only incidental. Members are expected to have read the rules of XDA and to follow them. That includes not bumping old threads, but it also includes an expectation that you will read the information readily available to you. Seeing the same common questions get asked daily, when there are good guides made specifically for this purpose, gets very old very fast. The constructive suggestion is to search and read. Guides abound both in the stickies and elsewhere, and the fact that you haven't found answers to your fairly common questions tells me that you either haven't made an effort to look, or you just don't understand and therefore probably shouldn't be messing with your phone.
I was able to root my gnex without wiping the data!
I dont know how it happened, but it happened, I was surprised too because I was really frustrated couldn't root it even after 10-15 tries ( I am a big time noob) and suddenly I unlocked the boot loader and rooted the phone without any loss of data, actually I was rooting because I had the VM100U something memory issue and my phone was terribly slow! I was surprised becasue i was expecting to copy all my files and crap one by one but now I have no issues

Rooting Quetion

I just purchased a Galaxy Note 4 in mint condition, because I'm not happy with my S 7 Edge, so this will be my daily driver, a I can't stand not having a rootable phone.. Ya this is a few yrs old, but it seems like it still has roms available.. I had a Verizon Note 4 and used the international roms, and still have them... Was there any issue with rooting after it went to 6.0 Marshmellow? I believe this phone will come shipped with it..
No issues I've ever heard of. Just flash twrp with Odin. Then flash supersu. Assuming from your post count you need no help with that.
And of course, if you use international rom, you might need a data fix for your service.

Thanks, Ya I know how to root, but like anything else, I like to check from time to time, when dealing with another phone I have not had.. Ya I had a Verizon Note 4, but that was a pure pain in the aers.. LOL. IfI would have checked before buying the S 7 Edge, I would not have spent the money... Ya I still have some files for the international rom Dr. Keaton, I used for the Verizon Note 4 and also still have the data fix.. But I'm thinking of trying one of the many roms just for Sprint. Thanks looking forward to getting this phone in my hands around the 31 of this month..

Supposedly sometime before Christmas, which should be very soon, a lot of people are anticipating the arrival of @tx_dbs_tx N7 port rom. He's suppose to release it soon. He only releases very stable roms. Im sure it'll be very great.
But until then, if you like high customizable rom, you should try Dtux rom here on sprint thread. And if you like aosp, we have cm14 working pretty damn good and stable. It's on the verizon thread but works for all.
Enjoy your new old note 4, still the best phone money can buy.

I don't use sprint service, but I would definitely setup and activate phone on pure stock, make sure everything works.
Then once you install twrp, I'd also make a complete stock backup (at least boot, system, efs, modem). Or use something like Flashfire by chainfire to backup partitions. Especially all the EFS partition. Keep it somewhere for safe keeping.
I don't know what kind of modding your going to do, but having a working backup is very helpful.
Then you can do what you want. But yes activate on pure stock, cause that's gonna setup your efs partition correctly and other stuff. Plus some custom roms don't have the Sprint activation software in them.
Finally got my Note 4 it is activated, but need a new sim, because the one Best buy sold me is not compatible. Now my question this one comes with 5.1.1 N910PVPU4C0G5. Is the root method for this the same as arron answered in post 2. Just checking..
I do not see a TWRP for the Note 4 other than the edge, what is the deal.

If you follow the Note 4 Qualcomm path: trlte, you'll find the one for Sprint Note 4.
https://dl.twrp.me/trltespr/twrp-3.0.2-0-trltespr.img.tar
The one above is for Odin flashing in download mode. Use the AP slot but uncheck auto reboot in Odin options. You'll need to wait for your success, 0 fail then pull USB and battery and wait at least 30 seconds. If your initial boot after TWRP flash isn't recovery, you'll end up with stock recovery when you boot there later. It won't stick.
Keep in mind that root methods are same for both lollipop and marshmallow but updating will remove root in most cases, especially using suggested methods. With that in mind, get to the right update before you root. If you're flashing a custom ROM, you don't have to root first; custom ROMs include root.
As already mentioned, make your appropriate backups.
