Can I get OTA updates on this phone? - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello friends,
So I've got a M8 a couple of days ago and I am not sure if I can get OTA updates in this phone.
I got it from a carrier in another country, unlocked with a method by root and custom recovery. It has TWRP installed, Bootloader in unlocked and S-ON.
I found these files via file explorer:
{

}
My software version:
What do I have to do to get OTA updates(I am not into flashing them manually, because I have only minimal knowledge in rooting etc.)?
Can my phone get sim-locked again if I do that?
I hope I posted my qyestion in the right section, if not, could please someone of the moderators move it where it should be?
Thanks

If any system files were changed by root, they need to be put back to stock. Stock recovery is also required.
If the above conditions are met, you should get OTA.

Thanks very much, I thought maybe it can get locked again, because the phone is unlocked with some hacking method.

Depends on how who ever unlocked it. If he or she used htcdev method you can relock bootloader via fastboot.

Normally there is no SIM Lock any longer on the One M8, just a provider CID defining the bloatware that is to be installed during first boot. Mine works with an o2 SIM since I got it.

Yes you are right sunshine ist an apk for s-off. It requires root and custom recovery. As firewater s-off didn't work for me I decided to use sunshine and payed 25$. And I'm glad to have done it.
After this you can flash stock rom and firmware (includes stock revovery) and there you go.

I wouldn't touch the whole firmware, because I'm not that much into modding(thats why I want to go back to completely stock). In this state that my phone now is, do I have to do anything else, or just flash the stock recovery and done?

Under this circumstances I would first flash the unsupersu.zip (just google for a link) with TWRP to remove suoersu and then flash the stock firmware.
If you want to be rooted just flash the stock T-MOB recovery.

Oh you're right. Sorry didn't see this on the first glance. Your screenshots says you are on the WWE variant, meaning european stock Android 4.4.2 (firmware 1.54.401.10). If you are sure that all stock apps are installed and superuser is uninstalled you just have to flash the recovery 1.54.401.10 using fastboot to be abled to receive all coming firmware updates.
Nothin' more to be done here I'd guess, as an unlocked bootloader won't prevent you from receising OTAs.

This is not completely correct, as its carrier/region dependent. For instance, all US variants (AT&T, T-Mob, Sprint, Verizon) are SIM locked.

Correct. Once SIM unlocked, an OTA will not relock it.

[3] flash via fastboot ClockworkMod Recovery for the HTC One X v5.8.4.0[thread] by broncogr or TWRP (recommended) here
Now device is Bootloader Unlocked + CWM recovery + S-ON & ready to flash custom rom. BUT IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED TO BACKUP YOUR STOCK ROM PRIOR FLASHING CUSTOM ROM.

By the way, is it possible to relock the bootloader after unlocking through htcdev.com for claiming for the warranty.

If you relock it, there will be still the signature on top of the bootloader.
So HTC always know when somebody unlocks the bootloader with htcdev.

Almost true but when you flash ruu after relocking bootloader it also flashes hboot again hence it returns to normal locked status not relocked. Warranty still in tact. Warranty only void if returned in unlocked or relocked state. Once ruu flash is successful all is back to normal.

When unlocking the bootloder HTC gets the IMEI of the phone so even if you relock it and/or flash a RUU they will still know that you bootloader was unlocked.
If you go the HTCdev way to unlock your bootloader your waranty is gone for ever.

Lol no its not mate. Once relocked you can still claim warranty as I've done with XL and others with various issues. No known issues with warranty have been posted after relocking and flashing stock ruu. HTC encourages unlocking bootloader and says that it MAY void warranty. Word being MAY!

This is one x mate lol. I assume your brother flashed s-off and super cid on his device? These contributing factors may have led to them not honor warranty. As there is no such solutions so one x or XL I know of a few people who have returned under warranty after relock. Remember if they can prove that it was bricked by human error that void warranty not just as bootloader was relocked.

No, it got bricked while he unlocked the bootloader. After unlock was finished the phone was dead. No s-off, no super CID and no custom recovery were flashed.
In the e-mail HTC sent him they said that his warranty for software problems is gone and only if there is something wrong with hardware they will repair it under warranty.

[Q] Just took the ota update. Is it too late to root my One?

I updated to Kit Kat this morning. What are the necessary steps for me to gain root? I haven't rooted a phone since my Droid X, so I might be out of the loop on some things. Thanks for any help!!!
So why would you take the update before asking this

You can still root it. If you go into RUU mode, flash one of the older system RUU's, then get s-off before updating. You pretty much gave yourself a **** ton more steps to do it, but yes, you can.
This link has the info to flash back to an older version - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2475216&highlight=s-on
You won't need the s-on / lock part of that, but you will probably need to flash one of those old system images, then use rumrunner to get s-off and unlocked, then you can update to 4.4, then flash a recovery.
Use firewater-soff.com. Use the temp root method.

If you are s-on hboot will not allow you to flash an older ruu version than you are currently on (downgrade). So that wont work. But as stated in the post above firewater will get you bootloader unlocked and s-off.

Edit: You don't need S-Off to flash custom roms/kernels/recoveriers - it's for people that want to tinker at a deeper level.
From what I remember from my DNA days, S-Off removes the security flag on HTC devices and allows you to flash a different h-boot, change the CID - which allows you to flash firmware from different carriers (BE CAREFUL DOING THIS), and remove the "unlocked/tampered" text from the fastboot menu.
Also, check out the 2nd half of the article in this link: http://www.pocketables.com/2013/04/why-you-want-root-and-s-off-on-htc-devices.html
Again, be careful with S-Off. If you ever go back to S-On and have the wrong h-boot or firmware installed I believe it will brick the device.

Well that's new to me. If the developer of the ROM says to have your phone S-OFF then definitely go with their instructions. I haven't seen the S-OFF method on the forums here, but I'm sure a google search will get you to the needed file(s) and instructions. If I remember correctly, actually achieving S-OFF wasn't too complicated/dangerous as long as you're comfortable using adb/fastboot - it's just what you can do to your phone once you've achieved S-OFF that can be dangerous.

If you fully convert to gpe I think you need s-off because you use the ruu. But with an unlocked bootloader, you can just flash the gpe ROM instead of fully converting the phone.

I'm sorry, but I have to ask...what's the benefit of a full gpe conversion? Does it run faster...Will it update if the HTC gpe edition gets updated and will I have trouble with the T-Mobile bands? Thank you so much
Sent from my HTC One_M8 using Tapatalk
That's exactly why most people do the ruu conversion, when there's an ota they will get the update too as long as you keep the stock Google recovery. Although on my m7 I was able to get ota with twrp. On m7 I kept Google radio and had no problems with T-Mobile. I think it should be the same for m8 since on the play store it says the phone supports T-Mobile. Just go check out the thread for the conversion if you need help.

Soff unlocks the whole system to be written or something.
Some mods require this.

Can you give an example which mods, when you unlock the bootloader and flash a custom recovery you can push superuser to gain root on your stock rom. Or install any rom you like including mods......they mostly just need root.
S off will allow you to change cid (carrier I'd) of phone, you can make it super cid which will allow you to flash a y firmware you like for any m8 varient.
You will also be able to flash the adsp hk update for hk sound to work fully on models that the normal mod won't work
It will also allow you to switch between GPE and sense so long as you have a ruu image for each
It will also allow you to totally brick your phone if you don't understand what your doing
Better stick to HTC dev unlock as Rom and kernals can be flashed no problem , if it's a sense device GPE, cyan, asop and sense roms should work fine
Only issue you might get is Verizon or other USA specific

check firmware version?

So I managed to flash a rooted developer edition rom on my m9 and when I tried to run ota updates, I got an error saying that it couldn't finish because my phone's software has been modified. After some searching around (and admiditantly some arguing), found out that it's because my firmware doesn't match my android version. I'm still running android 5.0.2 and I don't THINK I messed with the firmware. So how do I check the firmware version and find either a rom (preferably as close to stock as possible) or a ruu that will work for the software/firmware versions that I'm using?
Please do a "fastboot getvar all" and post here.

There ya go
Download this RUU: https://androidfilehost.com/?fid=96039337900114053
Rename it to 0PJA100.zip
Put it in root of your card(fat32 formatted).
Boot in download(make sure you have sufficient battery) and follow instructions.
P.S: First backup your data, this procedure will erase all your data.

It works and it's the simplest way in my opinion.
Tell me if it worked or what problem you encounter.

Oh. And I won't be able to get ota from AT&T because I'm on MetroPCS so I'll need a ruu for metro, tmo or developer

If you have S-OFF it's simple to convert, I'll show you a little tutorial.
If you don't have S-OFF it's impossible and you'll be stuck with this firmware if you won't get an AT&T sim.

I don't have S-offor or the $25 for sunshine. Shouldn't there be a t-mobile, MetroPCS or developer rom or ruu that's compatible with the firmware I'm using?

You can only flash AT&T because of CID, every carrier have different CID and because that the different RUU will give you error.
Only with S-OFF you can change CID and MID and flash any GSM RUU.
So, you're stuck with 1.32.502.9 firmware until you get an AT&T sim to update it or s-off it.
With this firmware you can only flash custom roms with Android version 5.x and some 6.0.x but just few 6.0.x and maybe will be unstable.

Ah, okay. So basically, I have to go back to AT&T then use a series of ruu files to work my way to nougat then finally flash the custom rom?

Or you can just flash this RUU, then update it from settings, it's more simple.

That's actually why I tried flashing a rom. AT&T won't let you get updates unless you're using their sim card for some ungodly reason.

I understand what you tried but it's impossible to jump firmware to 2.xx.502.xx or more with RUU, this can be done only with OTA on S-ON phones.

Is it possible to go from one ruu to the next until I get the phone to nougat though?

No, you cannot update it to 2.xx.502.xx or more with RUU, just OTA, Flippy explained you why in the other thread(different encryption between 1.... 2... 3... and 4... firmwares).
So the only way to update your firmware is to flash the RUU I give you(don't flash twrp, root, etc), get an AT&T sim and update it from settings until you reach nougat.
I don't explain it one more time... I think I explained the same thing in different ways 3-4 times....

Excuse me. I was thinking/hoping software provided by HTC themselves would be able to upgrade the firmware along with the OS instead of forcing everyone to be stuck with the only option for software upgrades from a carrier that we don't even want/use. It only makes sense that if it can be done on samsung phones, which I've rooted and flashed several times, it could also be done on HTC. So it looks like the only way to get nougat is to suck AT&T's ****. Thanks.
