Maybe it has to do with the google permissions regarding sdcards? Try to move the mp4 to the internal sdcard and see if it plays

This is indeed strange. Are you sure your sdcard is not one of those knockoff sds on ebay that corrupt the files?
Try to copy from your PC straight to internal sdcard and see if it plays now

If vlc won't play it, nothing will. You sure its not drm protected?

Try saving this on internal sdcard. I just tested on my M8 and it's playing fine with both stock player and MX Player

This would be my guess (some type of DRM protected file).
I have no issues playing .mp4 format on my M8 using MX Player.

The SD permission change on KitKat only affects write permissions, not read permissions.

Thank you for your help;
I have tried several MP4 movies on both my SD card and Internal memory. None work on my HTC ONE M8, but they all work on my PC,
I have tried different formats, eg VLC, MX, and others, without success.
I just don't understand why they won't play on my device.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you

I really am out of ideas with this one. How about if you play straight from the link above without downloading? Still not playing? Does it give an error?

You haven't told us the codec?
.mp4 is just the file container. Also the bit-rate.
Rock Player used to be the best all round, able to play unplayable files within software using the CPU. If the GPU can't decode it, you're gonna have to turn off hardware acceleration.
You might even have to 're-encode to H.264 or similar to get it to play.

Movies for different sources?
What exactly happens when you try to play the video? I've tried a great many video formats for lots of sources with MX, and have yet to encounter one that will straight-out not play. The worst that I've seen, it plays choppy, and I switch to the HW+ or SW decoder mode and it starts to play smoothly.

Playing Digital copy movies on the HTC EVO

Anyway to load and play digital copies onto our android phones? I have the htc evo 4g.
Yea....copy the movie(s) on to the sdcard and then use rockplayer to play them. Keep in mind not all file types will play, most will. Also HD movies might stutter.
You can try RockPlayer, VPlayer, and mVideoPlayer to play the movies once their own your SD. mVideoPlayer has a lot of polish to it.
Copy them to your SD card as m4v or mp4, not as wmv. Should play okay.
Thanks guys, well try when i get home.

Because the EVO won't play wmv without adding a program to do so. You added a program that does, which is fine, but that was not the question the OP asked.

Umm b ut it wont play .AVI or many other formats either.. But you (and others) always specifically mention "Not WMV files"
why? they play just as fine as any other format and as it seems everything but what you actually record needs a program..
Basically, why are people always saying not to do WMV but everything else is fine?

Because the codecs natively used in the wmv containers are not supported natively in the evo.
To the op, none of the market players will play digital copies no matter what they say. I have about six movies on my evo and all were digital copies. I had to screen capture them because android in general will not currently play drm content and dc's have drm. Understand that the market players can only play content with no type of protection on them such as drm. At this time, there is no way to watch pure digital copies.
Depending on what studio the DVD with the digital copy came from, the files themselves are either going to be protected mp4's or protected wmv's. Neither of which will play on an Android device. If the file is an mp4, it *might* play if you strip the protection off, but I have no clue as to how easy or possible that is. A wmv won't play whether it is protected or not as far as I know.

Copy over as iTunes
As mentioned earlier, if it has playback protection like Disney puts on their digital copy, it won't play.

Check http://www.doom9.org/ for help in ripping your DVD's. Much easier than dealing with DRM'd studio copies.
Just google search Step by Step Guide on How to Play AVI on HTC Desire/Evo/Hero?
you will find a simple guide on how to play avi on htc, it also helps to play other video like flv, mkv, mp4, wmv, 3gp, and more on htc
Thanks not the OP but I still found this thread useful and informative

Is there a way to play mov files on Evo ?

I am just inquiring if there is any way we can play .mov files on the HTC EVO 4G. I got a video on e-mail that the extension is .mov file type.
Any leads will be much appreciated.
Thanks.
You can try renaming it to .mp4 instead of .mov, similar format but it might not work.
Also, you can try to track down a media player in the market. I would say try vplayer but i do not think that is free anymore
Download RockPlayer from the market. It can handle pretty much all video formats, including .mov.

Android Music Player

hi guys... i really need some help with my music player. im using stock music player and i have class 4 16gb microsd card with 1788 mp3s. when doing a search from stock music player, some songs doesnt show up... i also tried it in poweramp library but still no luck..
I dont think the stockplayer support those musicfiles which makes it unable to read it.
Convert it to mp3 and try (if it isnt already).
are you using .m4a or .mp4 container on your phone? sadly, Ace does not play well with these formats so i converted them to mp3 instead.
btw im using fla.sh rom (KPN based)
its an sd card problem, just format it and put those songs in it again and it should work

No, you're wrong, all my music files are in .m4a and it plays just nice on the stock or any other music player, the only thing is, it shows as Unknown Artist, but, there's an app on the Market called MediaFix that correct this issue and you can have the media info back.
guys i dont have any problem with my tags... im just having trouble with search function in music app

MKV files are shells which might contain codecs that the E4GT might support. If it doesn't then you will have to convert it. So far everything I've loaded has worked, including subtitles.
I tried all the media players and the best one is MX Video Player. MX has swipe controls, ability to switch from H/W to S/W decoding on the fly, and uses FFMPEG to play unsupported codecs. Dice is also good, but it's not free. QQPlayer is also nice and uses FFMPEG like MX and Dice. BSPlayer is great for the PC, but right now has bugs on Android. Still waiting for VLC to come out for Android.

If so internal and micro SD card are partitioned in FAT32 can't transfer files over 4GB

1. Video Player..
Please let me know the best video player for One X.
I tried Mobo Player and QQ Player.. these two souldnt play few .mkv movies and found the picture and sound mismatch and very sluggish frame rates..
Searched in market for codecs installed Mobo Player codecs but it is of no use..
I purchased One X mainly to watch movies.. but now Im not able to play most of the high definition movies..
2. When I tried to copy a HD movie of 4.5 GB it gives insufficient memory error.. even though there 24GB of free space..
Im worried if the memory on my phone is corrupted.. please help..
I would go for DOA on your suggestions.. Thanks in advance.

You need to try them all and find the one that works best for your particular Matroska files. .MKV is just a container like .AVI and it can have anything inside.
Try MX Player and BS Player. I use MX Player but I transcode to h.264 in .m4v containers so it works great for me.

That is normal. There is nothing wrong with your phone. The storage in the One X is formatted in FAT32 which has a 4GB limit for files. You can't just format it from your computer either. You either need to stream your videos over the network or transcode them to be under 4GB. Nobody has managed or tried to change the filesystem for the storage partition so 4GB per file is the maximum for now.
