[Q] Return HTC One (M8) to stock - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
My situation is I have a shiny new HTC One m8 from EE and decided straight away to root the phone and flash a rom. Like an idiot I did this without doing any research or any sort of backup . I've always had iPhone and after jail breaking you could return the phone to stock very easily.
I now want to have the option to return the phone (M8) to stock in case I want to sell it in the future.
I have been going round in circles trying to sort this out and getting nowhere. I have managed to find reference to Nandroid Backup, RUU, Radio.
I am not sure if it is relevant but I have attached a picture showing a screen shot showing the CID and MID numbers. I would really appreciate it if someone could point me in the right direction with this.
CID ORANG001
MID 0P6B10000
Thanks

Restore the nandroid you found for orang001 1.54. Works fine
Am having trouble restoring stock recovery tho on orang001

Hi stevendeb25
Thanks for replying although I don't quite follow the answer.

COLLECTION of Stock backup's
There's an nandroid in OP that we can use to restore to stock via philz recovery. Also stock recoveries available

Hi and thanks again for your help.
It seems like I am getting closer to sorting this out. I have seen this page before but was not sure which I should use, Stock Nandroid Backup or Stock Recovery. Also which of the Stock Nandroid backups should I use:
CID ORANG001
1.54.61.5 - CWM Philz touch Thanks to Stuart0001
1.54.61.5 - CWM Philz touch Thanks to Brds7t7
1.54.61.5 - TWRP Thanks to Brds7t7
Does the 1.54.61.5 number correspond with the Stock recovery and does that mean I use both stock nandroid and stock recovery
Once I know that then all that remains is a tutorial to guide me through the process.
Thanks again.

You need both. There is not an actual stock recovery for your phone on that page but the 1.54.161.5 should work. Full tutorial on that page but quick rundown, get one of the twrp ones.
download nandroid, unzip nandroid into twrp/backups/serialnumber/ directory on your phone
load twrp and choose restore, choose that nandroid, let it finish, click reboot and make sure phone is working
load boot loader and put in fastboot mode
fastboot flash recovery 1.54recovery.img

Hi
Just to clarify a few points.
1. There is not an actual stock recovery for your phone on that page but the 1.54.161.5 should work.
When you say "Should Work" what exactly does that mean? What is the chance it won't work and mess my phone up?
2. fastboot flash recovery 1.54recovery.img
Where should I download the recovery.img to? Should I also put that on the phone prior to installing.
Finally should the phone be s-off or s-on
Thanks again

Hi
I have to admit I am finding this all too much to take in and am feeling overwhelmed by it all.
I consider myself to be quite computer literate however I have never come across such a bewildering array of options as there is with rooting and unrooting an android phone.
I made the original mistake of rooting my phone and flashing a different rom without really knowing what I was doing. Consequently I have no means of returning my phone to stock other than trying to follow the the instructions posted by other members of this forum who I can see put a lot of time and effort into helping others.
So I guess what I am asking for is for an expert to help guide me through, step by step. in returning my phone to stock. I am not sure if offering payment is against the forum rules, if it is then I apologise otherwise I am willing to pay for any help that gets my phone back to stock.
Thank You

Hi
My good news is I found a tutorial that helped me to return my phone to stock. The site had a video tutorial and a step by step guide which I followed and now I have a stock htc m8.
I would like to say thanks to all who helped.
http://theunlockr.com/2014/06/08/how-to-unroot-the-htc-one-m8-video/
All I have to do now is to remove the tamper flag for which there are plenty of guides.
Thanks again.

[Q] How to restore stock rom without nandroid backup?

Hello all.
I need help on how to go about to restoring the stock rom of the HTC One X Tegra 3 (bought in Singapore). The problem is, I accidentally deleted the Nandroid backup of the original rom after installing "cm-10-20120919-NIGHTLY-endeavoru.zip". I'm planning to get the official JB update over OTA.
Did a fastboot getvar version-main and it showed the version-main as: 2.17.707.3, So, which "RUU_ENDEAVOR_U_ICS_40_hTC_Asia_WWE" should I get?. And, since I'm using a Mac running Mountain Lion, how do I go about extracting the RUU as it's .exe?. If it's impossible to restore the stock rom using a Mac, then how do I go about restoring the stock rom with WinXP?.
Any other files that I need to download other than the RUU?.
Apologies if this question had been asked previously in the forum. But I just can't find any. And I'm still a noob about installing roms and thus that mistake of not doing the Nandroid backup. So, try not to ridicule me too much.
And thus, to cut it short, what's the step by step procedure to install the HOX Tegra 3 stock rom without the Nandroid backup on a Mac )preferably and if possible) or with WinXP. Thank you for the time to read and for any help rendered to this noob.
RUU_ENDEAVOR_U_ICS_40_S_hTC_Asia_WWE_2.17.707.3_Radio_2.1204.135.20_release_278245_s.. this is your RUU. you can download it here. http://www.htcruu.com/?dir=Endeavor. you do not extract the RUU. just run it after you relock your phone.

Thank you sir!.
Just 'gonna put this out here, for anyone else viewing this thread...
ALWAYS CREATE A NANDROID BACK UP! It saves a lot of stress, for you, and for people answering the same questions, over and over. When a tutorial suggests you do something - just go ahead and do it, it's worth it.
IF there is an RUU available for your handset a Nandroid is not required IMO - just my 2p...

Thank you for the comment. I couldn't agree more with you. And I do apologize for asking the very question of this post which I'm sure have been answered countless times previously. Just that I can't get the answer I was looking for or maybe I was quite confused with the treasure trove of information.
And let me reiterate to those who are planning to install a Custom ROM to their Android phones..., please, please, please do a Nandroid backup before flashing your phone to the Custom ROM of your choice. It WILL save you a lot of frustration. It was my mistake for deleting the Nandroid backup. A hard lesson learnt.

But having a Nandroid backup is much more better option to restore the Stock ROM. Well, that's what I think. I'm still a greenhorn about installing Custom ROM and such. And only having a Mac machine at home just makes it a bit more tricky. But that's just me the greenhorn. Anyway, thanks for commenting.

[Q] Touch not working after nandroid restore

Sorry if this has been posted already but i have searched literally hours before coming to this.
I'll start at the beggining.
I was on stock htc rom on 4.2.2 on my ONE X. i wanted to root so followed a tutorial and it went wrong, so i tried to boot the phone but it was stuck at the htc screen, so i did a nandroid restore
however the restore was for an older software version (ICS i think), now the phone boots up and i cannot use the touch in anyway. I have searched for RUU's but none work, i have tried nandroid restores but the give errors and i have also tried stock rom's but to nno avail.
I would honestly greatly appreciate help in any way shape or form. I am not a complete noob at this but a mere begginner compared to you guys here, (much love btw, helped me a hell of a lot through the years).
I can provide any information you want, just let me know how to access it as i dont have touch working. I have clockworkmod recovery etc, i dont think its rooted.
So yeah, please help me and im sorry if this is wrong section

Flash philz touch recovery , then get either a Rom or a newer nandroid, go in your recovery and mounts and storage and mount usb storage. That way you can copy a Rom on it and flash it.
Don't forget to flash boot.img!

Problem at the nandroid backup ? Or problem at recovery ?
Be clear about your issue
If it's touch on recovery update it to either philz touch or latest TWRP. They can easily be found in the original dev section.
When touch doesn't work when you restored a nand backup you need a newer one matching your official main version !

You should get a matching nand from somewhere. Without one i can't help (you should have made your own )
If there is no nand in the backup collection thread in the general section than i don't know. There is no other source available here on xda ...... maybe outside xda, a forum from your country ?

No mate , just flash a custom rom and use the phone. A stock rom is not different to your stock. It's only debranded (no carrier crap on-board). And there will be no major updates anymore, i don't even think there will be small ones either !

as you have mention above the link of root.zip, its of HTC One XL(non-tegra device)
if you have htc one xl then you are in wrong place..
He has the quad-core. The XL variant has no 1.73 hboot and 4.19.720 software number. So he is in the right place
Easiest way now is to restore the nandroid backup you probably didn't make before messing around with the superuser.zip !

If you can't find one then i suggest you install a clean new custom rom of your choice !

Well you need a stock nandroid backup that has the same main version number 4.19.720 and restore it. As long as you don't have that you can't go back to stock. But there are custom roms based on pure stock looks. You can install that too.

i have a friend who has same version-main: 4.19.720.1, like mine. but the problem he has s-on in his phone
if i install clockworkmod recovery v5.8.4.0 in his phone without unlocking it, and then make a nandroid back up and transfer that to mine, would
that help me?
if not what should i do, pls give some detailed guide, cause i really dont like cyangenmod, and the other stock looking roms have the installation guide that is quite complex for me.
thanks

You can't install anything like that via fastboot if phone is locked...you need to be unlocked and for the latest cm roms like cm 11 that recovery is too old... He can unlock too, flash a recovery make a nandroid backup without flashing another Rom and there is your backup
Gesendet von meinem HTC One X mit Tapatalk
Other roms installs the same way as CM. Flash the boot.img make a full wipe and install the rom.zip....done
Here is the nandroid backup for HTC 038 4.19 - https://docs.google.com/folder/d/0B3ipMMzpaJW4bGpMVTRNRHFpOUk/edit
But they're seperate files and you need to download them all and place them in the right folder.

did you try formatting cache, data and Dalvik in recovery??

i have flashed the android revolution hd rom. this rom is the perfect one, just the same as htc stock rom.you guys were really helpful.i would like to know many things about kernel and kernel flasher. what kernels actually does? i tried search the forum but couldn't find a simple post about it.
i like using android, and i wanna know most of it if i can.......thanks
Simple explanation, the kernel and hboot function sort of as a bios of a pc. It interacts with the software.
A kernel flasher....you don't need that if you flash the boot.img (kernel) straight from fastboot. The flasher does the same.

So I've managed to remove the whole OS...

Hey guys, please help me out. I tried reverting back to stock AT&T HTC One M8 but I seem to have managed to remove the entire OS. I was following a guide on here on how to revert back but whatever I did in RUU, it completely ruined the phone so far. I can't load past the HTC logo. I'm able to install a custom recovery program but I don't know how to get back to anything at this point. I'm going to try to flash a custom ROM and see if that works but ultimately I'd like to go back to completely stock ROM. Thank you for the responses in advance.
First, flash a ROM in recovery to get it working again. Secondly, read the guides on going back to stock more thoroughly and make sure you understand what you're actually doing before trying to go back to stock again (the same is true before you even think about unlocking the phone - why do something when you have no idea what to do if something goes wrong?!?!).
I know my response may sound harsh but if you'd read up on everything first before doing anything then this question wouldn't have to be asked over and over again by multiple people every day...

Thank you for the response, appreciate it! I do read almost everything before flashing my devices, I like to see what problems people encounter before I attempt to mess with my phone. But I just found my mistake I ran into. The guide I was reading was about going from GPE to Sense Stock (I had maybe 4hrs of sleep in my defense on being brain dead). I did flash back to a custom ROM for now, I'll just do some more further research on going back to stock sense. Is it just as simple as getting the ROM and flashing like the custom ROMs?

So, were you running a GPe ROM or a Sense ROM? If you were running a Sense ROM you just need to restore a backup to get it back to stock. What software build was the phone on when you bought it new?

I was on a Sense ROM. Android Revolution to be exact. And if you're talking about this number: 1.54.401.5 then I was that?
So just find a backup and restore to it? And that'll allow me to grab OTA updates too?

If your phone was on 1.54.401.5 when you first got it (or before you flashed a custom ROM), and if you're S-OFF, you can follow the guide in my signature to go back to 100% stock

Now what if I'm not 100% sure what build number I was before messing with my phone? Good chance of bricking? And one last question I promise, If I do go back to stock Sense ROM, can I still be rooted. S-Off, bootloader unlocked and still receive OTA updates? Or would I have to lock down again? I did read your guide, I was just wondering if I would still receive em before I decide to do all this work again lol
I really appreciate the quick responses. You're awesome.

If you're not sure on the original build then I wouldn't follow my guide. Do you know the CID of your phone? to check, run the following fastboot command:
fastboot getvar all
And post the results (blanking out the S/N and IMEI)

Well I recently changed my CID to that 11111111 CID but here's what I got from that command:

Looks like an AT&T model to me.
Something that is not clear to me: Did you convert your phone to GPE or not? The partiton sizes are different so, if you did a GPE conversion you would need to convert your firmware partitions back.
If you didn't convert to GPE, you should just be able to restore a CWS__001 backup from the stock backups thread in the general section, flash stock recovery and download/install the OTA.

Yes, I have an AT&T HTC One M8. As far as I know, I never converted to GPE. Here's a history of what I've done as far as flashing goes.
Unlocked bootload, rooted, went S-Off, flashed Android Revolution, flashed Viper ROM, went back to Android Revolution then tried to go back to stock and broke my phone. Now I'm back on Android Revolution. I did a whole bunch of factory resets/dalvik wipes and such so maybe that's why it looks confusing?

Same Problem?
Hey folks!
I have the same question I think and I don't want to open a new thread.
I flashed SinlessRom over ViperOne without converting to GPe and now I'm stuck in a bootloop...
Can I restore a CWS__001 backup from the stock backups thread, flash stock recovery and I'm good to go?
Edit: Ok, my m8 is working now after flashing ViperOne, because it fixed the partitions
Edit2: There is still no information about the os when I'm booting into the bootloader
Does nobody know, why there is no firmware version?
Missing OS in HBOOT resolution
Finally got the answer I was looking for!
Download the modified TWRP from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=54054835
You are going to have to flash your current firmware first before installing it for the OS info to show up again in HBOOT. You can use the Flashify app to install it or else just do it the PC/ADB way using command prompt like I did. It totally worked for me, so go ahead and try it!!
If you have questions on how to flash anything, lemme know.

Yoda,
Hey........ disregard my previous message. That version of TWRP DOES work (fixing "Blank OS" issue), HOWEVER........ I created a new backup using it and then tried to restore it over the weekend........... IT DIDN'T WORK! I think something is corrupted with it. So anyone who clicked on that link and got that version of twrp, delete it and ANY BACKUPS YOU CREATED WITH IT immediately. They are corrupted and useless.
Fortunately though, I was able to find a fully-operational version of TWRP over the weekend that has no issues and it too fixes the "Blank OS" problem too. Here you go:
http://themikmik.com/showthread.php?16278-SPRINT-RECOVERY-TWRP-Recovery-(UNOFFICIAL)-v2-7-0-4 (Control + F this: "Downloads TWRP Recovery 2.7.1.0 (DH) | Mirror (AFH) - build date: July 13, 2014". I downloaded from the Mirror link.)
Don't worry about it saying Sprint...... the dev CONFIRMED it works for all variants/carriers. So after creating a new backup using the standard twrp, I went back to stock recovery, re-flashed my most recent firmware (2.22.401.5), and then switched over to that new version of twrp........ created a new backup and then restored it using that new version. Worked like a charm!! And the "blank OS" issue........... gone! I highly recommend it!!
So please delete that old twrp and any backups you created using it, and you should be good to go!
P.S. My thanks to Midasgalp and also Captain Throwback!!

[Q] Help me please find the right ruu

Hello guys, I'm in big trouble i will try to be as clear as possible, first i had a good working htc one x running official htc 4.2.2 no root nothing just the latest official OTA, after a while i got bored and decided to root it and install CM10.2 i had much trouble while rooting but at the end it was succesful and i managed to install cm10.2 from recovery mode, after that was finnished it kept hanging in bootloop, after several manual restarts i managed to get to get past the bootloop to the main screen, after spending a few weeks on cm10.2 i didnt like it and wanted to get my device back to stock so i can sell it but here is the trouble: i searched on youtube and found the video: Unbrick / Unroot the HTC One X: Back to Stock - Cursed4Eva
I followd every step correctly, and downloaded what i thought would be a compatible ruu but at the end of installation the RUU gave me the message that it must abbort the update because i have a different version or something, and honestly i just cant seem to figure out which ruu is the correct one for my device.
here is some info about my device and i hope you guys can help me out:
version-main: 4.18.401.4
There is no ruu ! Get a nand backup from the collection in the GENERAL section
I'm sorry could you be more specific? Why is there no RUU? And how can I install a nandroid back up? I can't even flash custom recovery on it. I don't care if there is no android 4.2.2 RUU for it, I'll take jellybean RUU or ICS RUU as long as it's compatible with my HOX.

As i said there is just no ruu ! In the general section is a collection of backups, have a read there. All info is there, i won't type something here that is already written down.
You can't install a different ruu when you have a s-on device. Only s-off can do that but s-off is NOT available for the HOX (unless you find a shop that offers the service) so it's a nandroid backup or a custom rom. Downgrade is not an option.

any idea how to do that? because basicly i have deleted everything on my HOX and installed the original recovery and relocked the bootloader so now when i turn on the device it goes straight to bootloader, what should i do now?
Unlock the bootloader. Flash philz touch 5.15.9 recovery. Mount the sdcard inside the recovery. Unpack and place the nandroid backup in the correct folder (check the collection thread for info) flash the boot.img from the nandroid backup via fastboot. Perform a full wipe in the recovery and restore the nandroid backup.

Alright after a few hours I managed to finally get the device working I unlocked the bootloader, flashed the recovery, and flashed CM11 (I lost hope trying to find the right Nandroid backup) and everything works correctly like a charm.
