[Q] UK EE htc m8 unlock plus rooting issues help - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys, i have a UK EE htc m8 gun metal gray and have been using since launch day. I am very happy with the phone. One issue only as in the UK we only have the 16gb version available. the application storage space is an issue so i wanted to root my phone so i can make use of my 128gb micro sd card i have purchased to install apps & media. I have looked everywhere and all the threads are covering american at&t or verison only. Maybe i havent looked at the right place yet. Can any one help me root my phone (who has experience of this issue from a uk point of veiw) so i can make use of apps & data to micro sd. I am very new to rooting & moding and this would be my first time. I would greatly appreciate if there is anybody who can assist. One other question is as i use my credit card to purchase from online google play store, amazon would there be a security risk for me by rooting. Thank you guys for your time and you can msg me anytime.

Htc one m8 backup
Hi Shah Dawon
I can see from your original post you are considering rooting your M8.
Have you, or will you be doing a backup of the stock rom? If so would you consider letting me have a copy of it to allow me to return my phone to stock.
Thanks

Thanks again.

Someone referred to the hasoon unlock tool, but I haven't been able to get that to work.
I followed the instructions, fastboot off, usb debugging on (I'm on windows 8.1), tried it with all of my laptops USB ports (my phone pics/movies are backed up).
Installed the HTC driver, rebooted(the unlocker tool says it's windows 8 compatible), ran everything as administrator
registered at htc dev
ran the "get token ID", and the command prompt is giving me an error, the whole window reads
"daemon not running. starting it now on port 5037
daemon started successfully
error: device not found"
I've noticed in an instructional video on youtube, when the individual plugs his phone into his windows 7 PC, he gets an immediate prompt on his phone allowing that PC debug access @ 4:53 in the video . ( youtube.com/watch?v=FsOaRQoJWWDw I don't get that RSA key prompt, so I'm assuming that's where my problem is?
Anyone know how to fix that? I've tried reinstalling the HTC drivers, rebooting both devices, and revoking certifficates
running win 8.1 x64, pretty standard these days
software version 2.16.651.4
android 4.4.3
I'm not even trying to do anything that crazy, except put the harmon karmon software on my sprint m8

I unlocked my HTC One M8 (from EE) using HTCDev the day after I got it, have been rooted, ran custom Roms, obtained S-Off and now back at stock S-Off.
The only thing about doing it this way is that HTC may have a record of you unlocking your bootloader.
I don't have any experience in doing it any other way (I try and stay away from Toolkits as I find it is better to learn adb and fastboot so you know exactly what you are doing, and it will also help in fixing things if they go wrong).

Thanks for your input I really appreciate it. Can you possibly give a step by step as im new to this. And also would there be a security issue with purchasing from online using personal banking details like amazon, google play etc... Thank you for your responce.

If you want to unlock the official way (HTC may know you have done this) and root, this tells you all you need to know: http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one-m8/general/vomerguides-m8-bootldr-unlock-s-off-t2800727
If you don't want to use HTCDev unlocking, your only other real option is obtaining S-Off (via Firewater - may not work on your device, or Sunshine - will work on your device but costs $25).
One thing I will say before attempting ANYTHING is, Read, Read, Read, then Read again.
Make sure you are 100% sure you know what you are doing before attempting anything.
Couple of tips:
1. Make a note of your original CID (fastboot getvar cid) - if its EE it will probably be ORANG001.
2. If you get a custom recovery installed, make a backup of your stock ROM, and keep it somewhere safe - it might be handy to get you out of any problems.
In regards to your other questions: as soon as you root your device you are opening up a potential security risk as apps that ask for root could potentially have access to EVERYTHING on your phone (once you have given it root permissions). I am sure 99.9999999999% of apps that you install from Google Play are totally safe, but you never know.
Some mobile banking apps will not work on rooted devices (Barclays for instance) so be aware of that too!
Hope this helps some!
Stewart

Just got my HOX - what now?

Hey guys,
Before I get teared apart limb from limb, I tried searching for rooting on the new software and didn't really come up with any guides.
So, anyway. I just got my upgrade HOX in the mail, and I'm so excited! Of course, I've been on XDA before and rooted and customized and flashed to my heart's content, but I need some help.
Would someone lead me to a guide for rooting HOX on the NEW software? I just got my new kit today, I don't know if it automatically updates or not. I pretty much want to learn how to get to flashing a ROM.
Thanks!

Use it as stock for a few weeks at least to rule out any manufacturer hardware issues.
Update via the OTA check for updates in settings. (2.17 is the latest)
------
The when you want to play with custom, root of etc....
Install Android SDK
1st step is unlocking the bootloader via HTCdev
Then flashing clockworkmod touch recovery
Then flashing a rom of choice, all which have root I think.

I would actually emphasize this. So many people have had hardware issues and it will be a struggle to get the phone repaired after rooting via HTCDEV. Spare yourself trouble and give some time to rule out those problems.
Besides you can use that time to get to know the available roms, issues with them and the rooting/flashing process

Sorry I'm just trying to learn here but here I go. Are their any complications of using HTC to unlock the bootloader meaning can't the boot loader be relocked if he is trying to send it in for repairs?

It can be relocked but unlocking the first time sends HTC a notion that your device has been unlocked. And there are several people that are having a tough time getting their phones repaired even though the issues are hardware.
Depending on the country and law it is possible to force them to repair or replace a faulty device but trust me, that process will be a lot faster and simpler if you haven't tampered with the bootloader.
An irrelevant response but that's why I will always go the nexus route when buying android so I could avoid most if not all these issues.

Help with HTC One X ATT version
Hi Guys,
So I have unlocked my HTC One X ATT version using the HTCDev.com site. Now I want to install clockworkmod so I can proceed with custom ROM installations. But all the links that I find to CWM are dead.
Can someone point me to the live links please? I am itching to get the CM10 rom installed on my HOX.
Please note there are plenty of sites and links for international version of HOX but I want for ATT.
Thanks,

You'd be better off asking in the AT&T One X section of this forum. I didn't think you could even use htcdev with it.

[Q] Unlocked on Day One...now stuck with S-ON! Help :-/

I've been scouring XDA, looking for a way to get S-Off on my Unlocked/S-ON VZW HTC ONE. I was one of the few who managed to unlock the phone early using HTC DEV. Now I'm stuck with the antiquated firmware, modems, kernels, etc. Can anyone help with this? I'm kind of a noob when it comes to Fastboot....so you may need to steer me toward a walk-through. Thanks in advance

ok so what you'll need to do is make sure you have working ADB and Fastboot on you PC and make sure they can see the phone.
First you want to get:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=42407269
once you have this loaded on your pc we are going to want to make sure it works. for simplicity im going to this a certain way once you get the hang of paths and how this all works you can choose to do it a different way.
first make a folder on your c drive fastboot
once you have that folder place all the contents of ADB and Fastboot from the link above into the folder.
from windows open up a command prompt. (search CMD.exe)
once opened we want to get to that directory so we type this :
cd c:\
once that is done lets plug phone into the pc
run command
adb devices
(output should look something like this)
* daemon not running. starting it now on port 5037 *
* daemon started successfully *
List of devices attached
C:\>
this means no devices are seen by the pc. This is okay, for now.
with the phone you are going to need to enable develop mode. to do so go to
settings > about > software information > more > click the build number on the screen about 10 times in a row.
if done correctly it will call you a developer in a toast notification.
back all the way out to settings and go to the bottom. you should see developer options now. accept the warrning and get into the options. you will see the option for USB debugging, we want to have this enabled now.
once this is all done run this command from the CMD.exe you had to open above
adb kill-server
then run
adb devices
(output should look something like this)
* daemon not running. starting it now on port 5037 *
* daemon started successfully *
List of devices attached
***device name here***
you are now talking to the phone via ADB congrats.
...next step
Perfect! I'm up and running in adb. Thanks for the great instructions Now what should I flash?
I'm running bonestock and it's amazing. Haven't found the need to change. It runs awesome, everything works, simply amazing.

I was in the same situation as you in regard to HTC Dev unlocked on day one but still had S-On. What I did was flashed the Odexed Full ROM version: 1.10.605.10 from santod040 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2485319) and then flashed the stock boot.img and signed-recovery.
However, after doing that I had one hell of a time with rumrunner, even though I was using the download for 1.10.605.10. It turns out, even though I was on the stock ROM I flashed above with the correct version my OS was showing 1.10.605.02 because I had one of the weird phones that shipped with that version instead of .08. Luckily for me since I had the stock boot.img and signed-recovery, I just did the OTA update to 1.10.605.15 and then used rumrunner for that version.
Also, no you don't need to lock your bootloader before doing that. I didn't.

Are you on a stock ROM? You can always make a backup, move those files to your computer, RUU to be completely stock, and then run RomRunner.
Once that's done, just bring over your backup and restore it in recovery.

Pls i need help its very important

So this is the story.
I have a friend who went on a vacation from Croatia to the UK. In the UK, he bought the HTc One X there, locked on o2 network. He sold that device to me, and he told me that i can unlock the device by purchasing unlock code from eBay. I purchased several codes, but i keep getting error - incorrect password.
I really have no choice, i cant sell that device to anybody, neither i can use it on Croatian networks.
Also, i have made factory reset, but it seems that neither this helps me.
Also, when i try to update software to 4.2.2, in middle of installation red exclamation mark shows up, then phone reboots. Please help me.
Device is not rooted, has stock recovery installed, bootloader is relocked, and stock 4.1.1 is installed.
Is there any other method of unlocking the device except entering the unlock code.
Thanks in advance

You must to ask the code from O2 some vendors change the codes for unlock sim card. NO other method to unlock the device except if you are S-OFF but I think you are S-ON. You can see this when you go in bootloader.
I already asked them for the code, they cant give it to me because i live in croatia

The rom is not stock enough, it stalls at framework patches. Something is deleted which not should have ! You have to restore a new stock nandroid.
This means unlocking of the bootloader, flash a custom recovery, flash a boot.img, making a full wipe and restore a new nand.
I am willing to do everything, pls explatin this everything step by step.
Also it is possible to make a backup of all apps? I have pretty a lot of big apps, and i would not like to loose progress on every game(GTA SA, Real Racing 3, Dead Trigger, Riptide GP2 and many other games. Thanks in advance

[Closed]Store display and how to root/install ROMs

Hello,
I got a store display of the HTC One M7 on the Verizon network and I'm still new to all of this. How and what are the steps needed to get root access and be able to install custom ROMs, like CM11 and whatnot?
If there's any info you guys need, I can try my best to figure it out.
And bonus points for recommending any other compatible ROMs I should try out as well?
Thanks guys
Also I just found out I still have 4.2.2 with HTC sense 5.0 would I be able to get root by using weaksauce /HTCDev?
Edit:
All I had to do was reformat the OS from the stock recovery to get it to stock OS and since I still had Android 4.2.2 and HTC sense 5.0 I was able to use weaksauce and firewater/adb to get root and s-off. Thanks guys :good:

Moved for you. I'm on the Sprint m7. We recommend using htcdev to unlock the bootloader but remain s-on. If you want s-off, you most likely have to pay at this time (see here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2699091).

I'm wondering though cause it doesn't have stock android OS, so can I just use the standard steps or do I first have to install a fresh OS?
Bump, added new question to the main post.
Weaksauce and firewater will work for you if you are on 4.2.2

Updated problem

Hi all,
I have htc 1 m8, stock rom, i got an update and after i downloaded and installed the update, i have a new bug that from now my mobile doesn't recognize contacts if the phone is not saved into the phone's memory exactly the same - that is, if the number is saved with the country code (+972) and the caller id is without then it's not recognized and vise versa.
Does anyone know a solution for this problem?

Try factory reset. That will wipe your phone so back up anything you need to keep..

are your caller IDs 7 digits? then http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1160343
if you don't want to go with custom/rooted ROM, you could unlock bootloader, boot a custom recovery (TWRP, using "fastboot boot <name of TWRP>.img") then make a nandroid backup, adb pull the file, edit it, and adb push it again
Note that this will break OTA updates, unless you restore the original build.prop (and anything else you may have changed)
also if you use HTCdev to unlock, it will wipe your phone including the /data/preload folder which is also needed for OTAs, alternatively you could use sunshine S-Off which doesnt wipe your device but it does cost $25
and if you dont want to mess at all with your phone, look up an app on play store called "prefixer" it doesnt do exactly the same job, but close enough
