[Q] Wifi Tether Cap - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note II

Hello,
I have been researching about this issue but I haven't found anything that clarify my hypothesis. I am using Samsung GN II from T-Mobile and using T-Mobile LTE network. In certain area, I can accomplish download speed 75 Mbps (I am using speedtest on my phone). While in that area, I decide to tether my phone to my laptop. My phone is rooted and using the stock ROM. I am using Wifi Tether for Root User app to tether.
Here is the problem.
When I tether it to my laptop, I notice the download speed max around 36 Mbps and I never be able to reach 40 Mbps at all.
Question.
Is the tether app not be able to handle the transfer rate faster than 36 Mbps? Some can clarify this?
Any answer would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

Try FoxFi from Play Store and see if it works better.

WiFi tether, anyone gotten this to work?

I have just rooted my E4GT.
Installed WiFi tether.
I cannot seem to get it to work. My Gtab 10.1 wont recognize it all. My laptop will show it under wireless networks but won't connect.
What I am doing wrong?
Thanks in advance.
Are you talking about the Sprint Hotspot app? It's working for me.
The sprint hotspot app works just fine for me!
I havent test using 4G but i guess it doesnt work.

On the Galaxy Tab 10.1 you will probably have to change out the wpa supplicant file. Use root explorer to do this. Be sure to go into airplane mode before you make any changes. Go into system/bin (make sure its marked r/w) rename the original wpa supplicant file just in case you need to revert. Then replace it with the modified supplicant file. Make sure the permissions are exactly the same as the original. Change back to r/o, take it out of airplane mode and you should be good.
Try this one

It's working fine. The reason your GT10.1 won't recognize is because it is broadcasting an AdHoc network, rather than the EVO's infrastructure network. It's a pain but there are ways around it. All you need is download a ROM with the AdHoc tweak (such as the Overcome ROM for the GT10.1) or tweak the wpa_supplicant file yourself.
Thanks for the replies.
This is WiFi tether from the market i am talking about.
Any one have insight into why i can't get to work with my laptop. it shows as a network but will not connect.

Yup! It's working on PhantomHacker's Starburst v1.5 ROM like a beauty I'm using the included kernel (the one that is embedded in the ROM).
It's the Sprint Hotspot app. Works wonders for me!
Has been working fine for me since I downloaded from the market (Wifi Tether) after rooting. Stock ROM
On wifi teher is it infrastructure or ad hock using the latest beta please confirm please

No, I pay for the native Sprint Hotspot because it never fails. Once 4g gets hacked, bye bye $30 a month. For Wifi Tether, 3.1 beta 6 is great. Here's that one...

A question about Roms that have the "Hotspot Hack"

I don't know much about hotspot plans and I just got on Sprint about 5 months ago. I always thought if you had the hotspot added onto your plan that it was capped data?
So my question is how do Rom's have unlimited data when they have the "hotspot hack" on it? Does Sprint not care about the cap? Or is the Hotspot plan not even capped for those who pay for it?
You get 5GB data with sprint hot spot plan
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App
Well when you use the hot spot app it does a sign in process and I guess that's how Sprint tracks down how you're using the phones data. With the hot spot hack they removed that sign in process which let's us connect without any errors saying you don't have the service..
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App
So there is no need to pay for hot spot now?

Thank you for clearing that up. Now I understand. I know there is no cap but I'm paranoid. Is there a certain GB I should stay under so I don't get on Sprint's radar or do they not care? Last month I used over 7GB of just 4G through tethering. My 3G usage wasn't bad.

Don't worry about usage. I'm pretty sure the hotspot hack just cuts Sprint out of the equation and doesn't ask them for verification when you start the app

I'm not sure but I think the sprint hot spot is infrastructure mode, like a router, and wireless tether is ad hoc, like internet connection sharing on say a laptop.
Some wireless devices see ad hoc but not all. Some devices can be modified to see ad hoc. For example, my galaxy tab and the Motorola Xoom can't see it out of the box new. I had to replace the wpa_supplicant file on the tab with one that was modded for ad hoc networks.
On the other hand, infrastructure mode, everything wireless can see that. That's why infrastructure mode is preferred.

Wifi Tether issues.

I been trying to use the Wifi Tether app from market but lately my download speeds are really slow. Even though my phone is pulling like 10mb my computer only pulls like 1-2mb. And my hacked hot spot doesn't even work even though it's supposed to be hacked. Anyone have similar issues?

Could possibly be the ROM you're using. Need more information on what you're running. Try flashing another ROM

I honestly believe this is normal behavior. Looks like Sprint had Samsung put a threshold to throttle tethering speeds. I believe that's what caused the whole slow 4g fiasco on previous ICS builds. They didn't properly bake it in. On Gingerbread I would pull 10+ mb while tethering. Now on ICS I barely break 1 Wether it's wifi tether or the the Sprint hotspot. Also after updating my Evo3D to ICS the tethering speeds dropped down too the same as my E4GT. And I actually pay for it on that phone..

That only works for 3g and being that he said his phone is pulling 10mb he's obviously using his 4g connection. Honestly I've done that tweak in the past and my 3g speeds were still crappy. Even worst it broke streaming on certain apps till I reverted back to the Sprint proxy.

Ugh well this is certainly an issue then if what you say is true. I would like to fully exploit the connection of my phone. Does this happen in cm10? I might give paranoid android or cm10 a go but I've heard the 4g speeds on those are just slow period.

since you haven't disclosed your setup here is an off the wall suggestion...flash fi25 kernel/modem and test speeds again...
from my experience some ICS kernels/modems can affect 3g/4g speeds
Did you try the WiMax tweaks mentioned in the General forum?
I've tried tethering on all the stock (rooted) ROMs and never get much speed when I turn on 4G. I don't think I've ever gotten over 1Mbps. I've tried the hotspot hack and others. 3G is acceptable for most of my (very limited) tethering needs, so I haven't asked for much help.
For my purposes, 4G on a smartphone is a bit silly since reading forums and RSS feeds doesn't take up much bandwidth. But I would like to tether now and again at higher speeds to download larger files and stream video.

Thanks for directing me to that thread. Unfortunately, I'm unable to get my MSL. I installed a terminal emulator and get nothing when I enter getprop ril.MSL. When I put in getprop by itself and scroll through the list, there is no ril.MSL. I've also tried dialing *#RIL#, running an IPC Dump Log, but the View IPC Dump is blank.
I am rooted, btw, on stock FI25 with Agat's recovery.
What am I doing wrong?
EDIT: Okay, first of all, I was able to make the entry changes using shortcut > Activities Nova Launcher > WimaxHiddenMenu > Extensions. Second, I was able to get my MSL by downloading alogcat, going to dialer and entering ##DATA# > Edit > entering random numbers, then filtering alogcat for MSL. Whew! Anyway, still trying to follow all the instructions in that thread.

I tried settings from the http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1265990&highlight=wimax thread and it didn't seem to make a positive difference. In fact, I'm having a little trouble with stable connections, so I'll have to try a few different things. Anyway, I'm not optimistic about this helping with tethering. My 4G speeds on my smartphone are terrific! My 4g tethering speeds are...3G-ish.

Best other suggestions I can give - make sure nothing else is running and if at all possible keep it plugged in and cool when tethering. I don't use it much but I keep it around as a backup in case the main net access goes out.

Thanks. Should i try water cooling? I don't use it enough to worry, but like piddling with it to get the best performance. If something changes, I'll post about it.
Funny my post got ignored when I tried to give the best feedback based on experience. If you want fast 4g tethering speeds go back to a gingerbread build and you'll be all set. On ICS the kernels are set up to not allow you to go past 1mb while tethering. I guess that was sprints way of cracking down on the free tethering. You get to enjoy it still but at reduced speeds. My Evo3D is also on the same boat after ICS even with a subscription to Sprint hotspot $29.99.. Both phones had great tethering speeds on gingerbread. On that note good luck because you're never going to go above 1mb unless you count the upload speeds.

I don't get what's going on? Are wii talking about tethering with the cord? If so, I've seen some people talking about tethering with their hotspot. So now I'm a bit confused. Are you all using the "Wifi Hotspot Hack" tether?
I don't know what "speed" problems you all are getting. I've been using the Wifi Tether app for quite some time. Most of the time, ROMs don't let you tether 4G using Sprint Hot Spot hack. The hack would only support 3G. So I just use Wifi Tether anyways. I always get good speeds. What's going on?
And I stream Netflix HD on ICS. So I know I'm getting fast speeds. LoL!!

We're talking about using the phone as a hotspot whether it is with the wifi tether app or the hacked hotspot. Apparently after upgrading to ICS from GB I'm getting throttled data speeds when I use my phone as a hotspot. My phone would pull 10 mbps, but when my computer connects to it is throttled to 2mbps max whether I'm using wifi tether app or the hacked hotspot. What's your setup and what speeds are you getting while tethering?

[Q] Tether for LTE

So I just decided to get a note 2 with Sprint as my provider.
I plan on rooting as soon as I get it (Friday I hope!) After I root I plan on getting tether going.
Since I travel for a living (pilot) I need tethering to avoid crappy hotel wireless.
What is the best tether for root users.
With my old EVO I used wireless tether which worked great.
However I plan on using tether whearever I have a LTE signal. Is LTE tethering apps different that regular tethering?
Thanks!

Maybe it's the fact that my phone is a Sprint GS3. I do see many GS3 owners having the same issue. "
I don't know if the Note 2 has issues with the 11-20 version or if it is only the SGS3. If there are any issues..I would consider trying the 11-18 version.

[Q] Anyone find a WIFI tether app that works yet?

FoxFi doesn't seem to work on the Verizon version. Problem is that the Verizon version gets locked down so rooting may take a while. Hopefully someone will find one that works.
EDIT: Bluetooth tethering works, but it is a fraction of the speed. 10% at the most.
Edit 2: Been spoiled with Paranoid Android. Looks like root is required for free WiFi tether to work with KitKat devices.
I am not buying this phone until it is rooted because of this.
If there is a workaround, I am 100% buying this thing ASAP.
So... Anyone have some ideas?
No wifi tethering yet, but using FoxFi/PdaNet for USB tethering works fine for me in the meantime. Speed is fine running it that way.
Well excuse me guys but I think I'm missing something here. What's wrong with tethering? The default settings for tethering works fine with me without any other app.

Ops my mistake. I though you meant the feature in general is not working. Now I understand, it's working but with extra subscription while on Verizon. I'm not on the same network so I don't have such issue.
Sorry for any inconvenience.
Regards,
Don't know if it's any use to you but on Three in the UK you have to pay for tethering or it blocks internet until you reboot the phone but I found that it can't detect the computer if you're using a linux distro. Worth a try with a live disk/pen if it's just for browsing etc.

Theoretically if you had root, do you think there's an app that would work in Infrastructure mode? I'm on Sprint so root isn't a problem but I had awful tether problems with my old M7 when it went to KitKat and I had to revert back to keep my old android-wifi-tether install working.
I'm on T-Mobile and purchased clockwork mod tether. DOESN'T work on HTC ONE M8. Would really like to keep this phone but I must have working tether, where I live my cell phone gets better service than the local cable provider!

Tmobile gives you 3GB of tethering for free. They don't block the native tethering at all. After you reach the limit, tethering would redirect you to a Tmobile page. Internet services like Dropbox or League of Legends still work even though you've reached the limit. And Facebook, I believe. =.P
But I don't use any tethering apps, and I'm on Tmobile. Is there a reason why you're trying to use ClockworkMod Tether?
EDIT: I forgot, that's on their $20 data plan, the unlimited-no-throttle plan. I don't know how the native tethering works on other plans. Hmm...
