I bought and unlocked galaxy s3 att in India,I live in apartments,I'm getting 3-4 bars when I sit near the windows and when I come to room I loose signal,And the strange things is When I hold my mobile with left hand signal drops like crazy leaving only 1 bar,I tried Carbon, quantum,Slimrom still none resolved the issue
I updated my modem to UCDMG2 running 4.1.1,still same problem,And another things is 4g icon it shows still connects to 2g networks,I mean speed is worse like 2g still it shows 4g,custom roms too have that problem, when i select LTE it shows H+ only and I get 2g speeds,I'm using airtel network, they have good coverage and network speeds
Did you check your APN settings to see if they are correct? There is an option sometimes that will push for 2g. Also if you are using multiple apns there are APN types that can be put in that will make it choose that APN as a priority over others. I am not certain without looking it up but I think it may be "hipri" don't quote me though.
For example if u had multiple apns and that type was liatedbon one of them other than the correct one for say proper late connection.. It could perhaps use the one you are not wanting
This is just me reaching and it may not be The cause but doblook at your APN settings.
First I'd research what the current correct APN setup for your carrier is
Good luck
If you want to see your true connection, go to Settings > About Device > Status > Network Type
Have you checked to make sure your carrier uses the bands/frequencies supported by the device?
Thanks fo r your quick response guys, But I'm using quantum rom now, Even If I select 3g or Lte it shows As if it is using EDGE,
3g and 4g are not currently available in our area ,and that Grip problem persists too, I loose signal if I hold both sides of my device with on e hand , and it gains signal bars if I release the left side of my device(I heard the antenna is situated at the bottom of device )!

Hello guys,
I´m a happy Desire owner since 2 weeks now and have a little question.
I noticed the following:
In areas with bad network coverage, signal shows (E)dge, or if it´s even mor bad it shows (G)PRS. That OK.
But in areas with good coverage it shows 3G (UMTS) all the time, and only if I transfer data, eg syncing email, it´s showing (H)SDPA, and switches back to 3G.
Is that normal?
I wonder as this is my first android device, and all my older WiMo phones where showing (H)SDPA all the time.
I´ve read else where, that often changing networks need a lot of battery power.
Oh, I´m using T-Mobile in germany with an unbraded Desire running 2.2.
I noticed this also with 2.1
Thank you!
Perhaps the question was´nt clear enough ... sorry.
I mean, I this the same at your phones, or do they show (H) all the time?
Thank you again!
Mine does this too.
If you want to lock to a single network type *#*#info#*#* in the dialer.
In the UK mine shows hsdpa most of the time, sometimes gprs when roaming. It does not show anything when on WiFi, just shows the bars. If you press from home screen the menu - settings - about phone - network, then you see the signal strength and type of signal .

Thats what I thought it should do ... so it seems my SIM is having a problem.
Yesterday I put a friend´s SIM in it (also using T-Mobile) and it shows H all the time and never 3G. If Network is bad it switches to E and then back to H.
Now I´ve ordered a new SIM, so lets see ...
OK my SIM is around 12 years now ... 1998 ...
I'm running my Captivate glide on Orange network (device is unlocked).
I rooted it following all the steps shown in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1378082 (BTW, works great thanks).
I kept AT&T rom, but issue happens also with Rogers rom.
This happens only on 3G/3G+ connections.
WiFi works great.
The issue looks quite simple: data connection drops (very) often.
No more email push notifications, ...
Have to go to Settings > Network > Airplane mode : switch it on and then witch it off to get data connection back.
It is not an operator issue. My other phone(s) are using the same and data connection works.
Is this a radio rom issue ? Is there a fix ? (didn't find a thing related to that issue).
Anyone having this issue ?
Depends on how strong your network is, I have experienced this a few times.
I keep getting this now that I have had more experience with it, anyone else experiencing random sharp drops in data speed/connection?

Well, I have 4 out of 5 bars... Signal looks strong enough to me.
If I use the same SIM card in a HTC MyTouch 4G slide => Works great, no data connection drops at all !
Looks like it depends on what programs are running and using the data connection:
- email push - connection last long enough.
- when I'm running Bejive (IM) - connection last a bit less (before the 1st drop).
- when I add Skype & LoudTalks : almost every 5 minutes connection drops.
I also noticed that after a voice phone call, sometimes data connection doesn't (cannot) restart by itself ...
Here is an idea :
Is there a way to tweak Operator connection like it can be done with HTC phones : GSM + CDMA, CDMA Only ?
Because when you switch the phone to CDMA only, it uses different frequencies and allow to keep data connections while talking on the phone.
Didn't find that option in Captivate Glide settings ...

Settings --> Wireless and Network --> Mobile Networks --> Network Mode
Didn't make a difference for me using HSPA only.

I just checked ... I don't have the "Network Mode" option in "Mobile Networks" section.
I have Roaming, allow data connection, APN, ... but not Network mode.
Weird...
I checked the operator info. Nothing out of the ordinary there.
I'm stuck ...and it keeps happening. No solution for now.

Maybe try flashing the Rogers kernel and ROM since that's what I have?

Already did that, but that was a few days ago when looking for the WiFi tethering feature ...
I'll flash it back to Rogers kernel & ROM and test.
Update: Flashed Rogers rom.
Good news is I now have the Network settings back. (AT&T rom is not the right one, for sure !)
Data connection last longer. But the issue is still here.
Still investigating...
Anyone else having this issue ?
the day before yesterday, I went to the copier room in my school and stayed for about 2 hours (too many copying). before i get out, i have no signal (mobile network not available). I need to go out to have signal back or reboot.
It happened again yesterday on the exact same location, I'm going to be there again now.
I believe it might be location wise....in my case at least.

I checked, looks like it is not linked to a specific location. I've been travelling and issue kept occuring.
Once data connection is ok, it usually stays up for 2 to 5 minutes, then drops.
"4G" symbol is still displayed - but no more data connection. Web pages not available in browser, no email sync, no more IM, ...
While data connection is down, Cellphone still works, WiFi as well.
It may be linked to an APN issue ... Or definitely a Radio ROM issue.
I'm running Baseband I927RUXKJ5.
Anyone else having this issue ?
When I got the phone the AT&T rep told me there was a known issue with the phone dropping down to lower data speed. He told me if I experienced it to get a new SIM card. Doesn't sound exactly the same but maybe try that?
I recently switched from AT&T to T-Mobile, and like the rest of us was suffering without 3G due to our lack of compatibility with the 1700MHz WCDMA that T-Mobile uses. One of my friends (a T-Mobile employee), however, informed me that it is indeed possible to get 3G by using the 1900MHz band, which T-Mobile is currently re-farming to support WCDMA. This trick is simple and easy, and I've had success with it thus far, albeit only in one location as of yet. There is a downside, however... as long as the trick is in place (as long as your phone is set to "WCDMA only" below), you cannot connect to EDGE. In other words, in an area where there is no 1900MHz 3G coverage, this process must be reversed to fall back to EDGE. As such, you may lose connection randomly and be completely unaware of it for hours, and I will mock you openly for attempting to blame me if you lose your job because you missed a call from your boss, lose your girlfriend because you stopped texting her, or lose your bacon because your remote bacon-protection app couldn't connect.
Remember, this is in the testing phase. It WILL get better over time and hopefully one day we won't even have to consider whether a phone supports 1700MHz... for now, though, report your findings below, preferably with location, signal strength/type, and down/up speed.
==PROCEDURE==
Go to dialer and enter *#*#4636#*#*
In the menu that pops up, tap "Phone Information"
Scroll down to the menu labelled "Set preferred network type" (it should be the first one) - this will likely be set to WCDMA preferred
Change it to WCDMA only
Switch to your main Settings app, then navigate to "Mobile Networks" (under "More..." by your Wi-Fi and Bluetooth)
Tap "Network Operators" and wait for the search to complete
Tap T-Mobile if it appears in the list
Once the phone has acquired a signal, you can return the Network Mode setting to WCDMA Preferred. Your phone should now switch back and forth between EDGE and HSPA+ fairly reliably.
===My Results===
At my home (approx. Colfax and Yosemite in Aurora, CO) I get 0-2 bars, mostly 3G but some H+ if I'm holding my phone and moving around, and 2-3 bars H+ if I set my phone down. Speedtest results range between 4 and 10 Mbps, with around 90ms ping. I've been keeping my phone set down with wireless tethering enabled, and it's been 100% usable thus far.
--Update--
Having used it daily for a few weeks, I'm pleased to report that there is moderate to good connectivity to at least 3G in most places. I still find myself on EDGE regularly, but I usually can get a WCDMA connection. Now, however, I'm annoyed because I exceeded 5GB data usage and am being throttled to below-EDGE speeds, which defeats the purpose of having 3G. >_<

Almost certainly not; see here.
If you have it working for some reason, go over there to tell everyone.
I'll test this later tonight. I'd be cool with 3G or H+ if it works. I have a T-Mob pay-by-the-day sim card that I'd like to use to tether my Nexus 7 to when I'm traveling (which is fairly rare).
I'm new to all this but how is this different from changing the APN settings?
Is this method better than changing APN settings?
This didn't work for me, Portsmouth, NH. It picked up the T-Mobile network in Network Operators but when I tried to select it it took forever and then said unable to connect, failed to register. Attempted a few times on a ucdlk3 stock based custom rom (Intergalactic II) and also on stock rooted.
Probably just not in a good location for this to work.

Ive recently attained a captivate glide and unlocked it to use on t mobile. Like you would assume at first glance i had an edge connection. Although after messing around with it i realized by going to
Wireless and network > Mobile networks > Network operators >Default setup > Manual it gives me the option to choose to connect to att/ tmobile and when i chose tmobile and it registers on the network i get H+ speeds for a few minutes then it just defaults back to edge
is there a way i can keep my phone on H+ at all times because its capable
bump!

I have this problem too, but only into my house. Outdoor that´s right. I´ve tested with all modems, and I think the best for me is i927UCLH2.
Which rom, kernel and baseband do you use??
I´ve done some tests with my glide and my mother´s galaxy chat, in different places. In the street I have H+ and she H, but when we are into any house, under any roof, she still has H, and I only have E.
Does it happen to you?

Doesn't this just sound like a basic signal issue? When the signal gets worse (indoor vs. outdoor) it will drop down to a lower signal.
Also, are you sure Tmo has fully rolled out the 1900mhz band in your area? They may not have complete coverage yet.

i'm sure that it is a phone or a software phone problem, cause i've put my sim card in my last phone (xperia pro) and it has H signal too
i've tested all rogers and att modems, and still have the problem..
Hi, I have a similar prob, I'm in the uk and need it to stay on H+, as it'll drop off to 2g in the house, I've always used miui roms in the past and they have the option to force 3g etc. The only way round this I could find is to use 'pimp my rom' which allows you to select which network you want manually, such as gsm, edge, wcdma etc. Download it, go to tools, device hidden menu, turn off radio, wait, turn radio back on, then quickly select from the drop down box what signal you want, I select wcdma only. If the radio does not come back on, put on flight mode then off again, and will work.. bit annoying but works..
That happen to me too, but not for t mobile, for a operator that use 1900mhz in my country.
My N900T has much worse signal than my previous Note II - between 15 and 20 dBm worse, so essentially unusable out in the fringe area I live in.
I'm running SlimKat 9.0 (4.4.4) baseband is N900T UVUENK3 (which I think might be the most recent modem).
I'm using a StraightTalk ATT SIM (phone is unlocked) but that shouldn't matter for signal strength
I've got Preferred network type: LTE
And in service mode / phone info, I have preferred network type: LTE/GSM auto (PRL) - unchanged from standard.
I've removed the back cover (the one under the battery door) and made sure all the "fingers" make good contact with the contact pads that are built into that cover (fixed my GPS but not baseband)
Anything else I can check? Should I try some ATT radios to see if signal improves?
Or is this just the nature of the beast? Move to the city or get a different phone?
Thanks for any input!
Had this problem but hopefully the fix I used will work better. I flashed pac rom from nightly and resulted in no signal even though showed 3 bars(never higher or lower) but no connection in reality. Tried this and got signal kinda ( very slow and missed calls and sms)
Anyway
On tmobile network but might help either way idk never had att.
First goto
Settings/More Networks/...
Then first try the lte if not heard using 3g can fix signal connection with custom roms.
Check your apn settings and verify with att/simple talk
And if needed hit the mobile operators and let it do its thing.
Still not working can try fixing another way let me know.
Screens attached and can't post link ig but quick Google search should net you the setting. I did keywords "att apn settings"
Let me know how it goes. Flashing pac rom see how update goes this time for me lol
The signal got a good bit better when I replaced the antenna signal cable. Cost a whole $3.
I'm still 5 or 6 dBi down from my old note 2, but, from my forum reading, that might be the nature of this beast.
I have same problem, poor network, and sometimes when I go to some club or cafe I dont have network and on S2 same network I have full signal 3G, H+
