I want to root my HTC One X - but I'm scared - HTC One X

Hi everyone.
I've recently been playing with the thought of rooting my HTC One X for the main purpose of getting rid of some of the pre-installed apps and being able to move my apps from the program storage to the phone storage.
I considered myself a pretty techy guy until I started researching what was needed in order to root my phone - I'm not sure I've gotten half the info yet! Which makes me all the more cautious, since I don't want to brick my phone...
Here's what I've done so far:
I unlocked the bootloader on my phone using the official HTC method which required a hell of a lot of work and sending and receiving e-mails. It did reset my phone to stock, but not much else - is this correct?
I've found a ROM I'd like to install on my phone when I get it rooted: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2410320 this bad boy
But from here on out I'm pretty clueless... I find that the more I research, the more things I should consider prior to my rooting-procedure...
In the ROM's description it tells me to have S-OFF, so I googled that and it led me to this article http://android-revolution-hd.blogspot.dk/2013/06/do-we-really-need-s-off.html which just made me all the more confused...
As I read it, I don't just have to be aware of my android version (4.2.2) but also my software version (4.17.111.4) - is this correct and if so, how does it affect me?
I've found a couple of guides on how to root my HTC One X with android 4.2.2. but they all seem to be out of date, and besides really poorly written, which makes them all the more difficult to understand
Do you guys know of an up to date guide on how to root a bootloader-unlocked HTC One X?
And also can you guys think of anything else I should consider before trying to root my device?
Thank you very much in advance!

Now you have unlocked bootloader. Copy your new rom to folder on your sd card
1. You must to flash custom recovery like Philz 5.15.9 via computer and fastboot fastboot flash recovery recoveryname.img
2. Make nandroid backup on your phone in this case you will have backup on your stock rom. You have menu in the custom recovery for this
3. make full wipe format system, data, cache and dalvik cache DON'T FORMAT YOUR SD CARD via recovery and Install the new rom via custom recovery
4. flash the boot.img from your rom archive via computer and fastboot fastboot flash boot boot.img after this run fastboot erase cache
And all this must be in Q&A Section

Just to let you know, there is no official and easy way to S-OFF your HTC One X, you can forget this. (But maybe you already have a S-OFFed device?) For the rest, just look at Thant's post.

[Q] Cant load into CWM on HTC ONE X

I have a Rogers HTC One X that is fully unlocked and rooted. I have multiple apps on the phone that the phone needs to be rooted for and they work great. When i rooted the phone i used the one click root tools. I am trying to flash a new ROM on to my phone, but i cant get CWM to boot. I follow all the steps to flash it on the phone, but then when i do the power and volume - and then click recover, all i get is the HTC screen and then it reboots over and over and over.... until i push power again and start it up again.
Another note, i was able to get the other mod to work, the tradewin or something like that, but for some reason when i use that one it wont actually install the ROM i am trying to install. Its the Android Revolution HD. All the forums i read it says to use CWM but i cant load into it. Does anyone know how to help me with this?
Thank you! :fingers-crossed:

Try and flash CWM recovery over and then do "fastboot erase cache" - do that twice, then try and boot into the recovery without restarting the phone..... you need to choose hboot from the phones screen and then recovery.
what is the command prompt code to erase the cache? i know i saw that before i just cant seem to find it again. I am still a little new with this stuff.
Thank you!

Before you do anything further, can you confirm that you have the international HOX and not Rogers HOX as they talked here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1538
Flashing something that is not meant for your device will brick it.
That didn't work. I will explain exactly what i do.
Push power and volume -
Then i click fastboot, plug in my phone and do the CWM
I did that twice
Then after done i clicked bootloader
Then recovery
Phone just keeps restarting. Am i doing something wrong?
Thanks

Sorry i am a huge noob with that. What is the HOX, i used the one click root tool to do everything. How can i check if i have already screwed up the phone?
sorry, the rogers part didn't register in my head before posting..... try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671873
HOX is shortform of Htc One X.
You really need to make sure you flash the right CWM. The one for International HOX will not work for Rogers HOX.

None of the International Htc One X ROMs will work for you.
For Rogers Htc One X, only ROMs from here will work for you

And you should be in forum for Rogers One X, not here.

Factory resetting a rooted Htc one x

I traded my rooted galaxy nexus for a rooted htc one x. Before I got his htc one x, he performed a factory reset on his phone.
After I got home I realized that his contacts, his accounts and all his apps were still there. I did a factory reset again but they are still there.
Is there a way to completely wipe everything off it? I do want to keep the root on though if possible (because I want to keep it unlocked).
When I go in the recovery mode this is what I see.
****Tampered***
****Unlocked***
Evita pvt ship s-on rl
HBOOT
FASTBOOT
RECOVERY
FACTORY RESET
CELAR STORAGE
SIMLOCK
IMAGE CRC
POWER DOWN
Will clearing the storage help?
@Op,
Some time ago somebody told me here on the board that if you factory reset your phone using recovery mode it
will wipe the storage as well, that it's different as factory reset in OS settings where the storage is kept.
I think you need to wipe storage indeed to remove the contacts.
Can you please let me know when you decide to factory reset the phone in recovery mode the storage get wiped too?
I didn't have time to test this and I'm very curious if it does.
Thanks a lot.

I tried to do that half an hour ago. It was stuck on htc logo with this paragraph underneath for almost 10 minutes until my patience ran out "This build is for development purpose only.......legal action."
I'm trying that again now and I'll let you know what happens.
Nope, don't do that please.
If you like to wipe the storage I think the best you can do is use settings/storage in OS to accomplish.
Before you do I would like to advise you to make a backup of Clockworkmod directory (copy it to your pc) on your storage if that exist.
So incase something happens you are still able to restore.

Thanks but I have no idea which method the other guy used to root this phone. Stuff like rom Manager, super SU and Titanium backup are already installed in the phone. When I go to Rom manager and try to "Manage and Restore Backups" or "Backup current ROM" it asks me to install clockworkmod recovery first. However, when I try to do that it gives me a list of Phone models to choose from and HTC one X is not in that list.
When I went through the link you provided it says "Your bootloader must be unlocked via htcdev.com to use these solutions." Now how do I know if it's unlock via htcdev.com or not? How do I check?
It must be unlocked already otherwise there wasn't a custom rom on the phone.
But you can verify that by going into bootloader, it should say 'unlocked'
SuperSU is needed to root the phone so that's normal as well.
And about Clockworkmod, it must be there as well otherwise you couldn't get into recovery.
My advise, go into recovery and make a backup first.
If that's done you can copy the Clockworkmod dir from your storage to your pc to make sure you have a valid backup.
Then you can wipe the storage and after that is done you place back the Clockworkmod dir.
From there you can look further and flash another custom rom or what you want.

keep holding down the volume down and power button until you get into bootloader. from there, u can tell whether it is unlocked or not, also, might as well check if it reads endeavor or evita, to make sure whether u have the dual core or quad core 1x, from there on, if unlocked check if u can go into recovery from the fastboot menu. if not then u know which step ull have to begin at, if yes, then u can start flashing right away. Btw, recovery as in a custom recovery such as clockworkmod or twrp.

[Q] Flash the normal ROM and make it "new"

Hello,
My HTC Desire HD gets stuck on the HTC screen when I try to boot it.
I am kinda new to this, so I should not have done what I did. I got this phone used and I rooted it, and tried to install a custom ROM.
And something went wrong, likely I didn't prepeard the phone the right way.. And of course, I have been serching a lot on the web, some things don't work and other this requires tools that have a bad download link or outdated.
So my question is: How do I make my phone like normal? Like unrooting and removing everything if possible..
Would be so great if someone could help me out or just by linking me to a working tutorial.
Thank you and have a nice day. And please, ask if something is unclear or if you have questions.
I have a very similar issue

Hi, I have done a similar thing, in that in an attempt to flash a custom ROM, I removed everything. Now, all ROMs just produce the HTC splash screen.
Please help as this is my only phone !!!
You both need to provide more detail on what state your phone was in to begin with and what you did to it. I have a hunch that your phones are S-On with unlocked bootloaders, and that neither of you flashed the boot.img from fastboot after flashing the ROM from recovery. But more detail on what you have and what you did is necessary.

Yes, you are right. I just flashed the boot.img with fastboot AFTER installing from recovery. Jellytime booted up. I really have to thank you for that.
And again, you are right. The phone is S-Om and bootloader unlocked.
I used a a tool named "EasyUnlockTool". It rooted, unlocked the bootloader and some other things.
But right now, I think I am going to stick to jellytime. But to help caraar12345 and me later if I want to go back to stock room, what kind of information do you need?
Thank you for helping
You can either flash a rooted stock-like ROM from recovery, in which case you'd be mostly stock, or relock your bootloader and run a RUU from your computer in fastboot, in which case you'd be completely stock.

What have you flashed and what is the phone doing?
Also, what carrier is your phone from?
Are you S-OFF?
Thanks for the replies guys. I have been trying to root the device using the dev tool kit. I did something , not sure what and I couldn't boot into recovery or android. Since then I have managed to get into recovery and android will boot but most of my apps are not working and looks like corruption somewhere has occurred which is why I need to basically go back to stock on everything.
My device shows s-on but detailing tamper warning s etc.
Any help is appreciated.

You won't be able to flash firmware with S-ON Though I doubt you would need to flash any firmware files anyway. Are you using a custom recovery? Philz TWRP or whatevs?
Did you not make a nandroid?
If not, your best bet is to either flash a custom rom or download one of the nandroids from This thread. There's a good chance the one for your carrier is there. Check your CID and match it up to one of the nandroid's there or request a nandroid for you don't see it listed but really want stock.
to check cid boot to bootloader/fastboot mode and use:
fastboot oem readcid
or
fastboot getvar cid
If you wouldn't mind telling me what your CID is, I would really like to know so I can match CIDs to carriers to better help people in the future.
Then you can just copy the nandroid to the proper location and restore it in the custom recovery.
Hey thanks for the assistance here guys, my CID is below
cidnum: ORANG001
Looks like there is one to use on that site which is great. Does anyone know how to get what stock recovery image I am using or should be using so that I can download this also?
thanks
also, when in bootloader it shows tampered and relocked, will flashing the recovery and stock firmware removes these marks?
thanks

Hey guys has anyone got any info on my question? Really want to get my phone back to stock. Having alsorts of problems.
I've managed to get the os back on and the clockwork recovery however I keep getting issues with apps being installed on sd card not being read and all my pictures that were on there seem to have gone also.
Cheers
No it won't. The only way to remove those is with S-off and spoofing them. There are a few guides about it in the general forum section. As for stock recovery, I'm not sure what recovery versions match up with what carriers.. If you can obtain an ota zip file for your carrier you can extract the recovery.img from it.

Ok thanks for the info. It makes sense although the issues I'm seeing are very odd.
Looks like any app installed on my sd card now shows as not installed and pics taken today that were also stored on the sd card have gone. Not sure what's going on...
Thanks again

First of all if the only problem you have is the camera you may want to see if you can fix that with some tweeks to the camera app, or send it in to HTC for repair if you have a warranty before going down this road.
but if you rather give this a try there is a couple of post and youtube videos you can look at. most importantly you will need to know some information about your phone. cid number what versions hboot and stuff before you start trying stuff.
here is a link to stock backups
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2701376
but first you will need to unlock you bootloader, root your phone, and get S-off
http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one-m8/general/vomerguides-m8-bootldr-unlock-s-off-t2800727
Here is a good video on how to do these if your a visual learner but watch it first and see if you feel comfortable doing all of this

He doesn't need s-off, and also no need to root it......It's not mandatory.
Unlock the bootloader
Flash a custom recovery
Make a full nandroid backup
Restore the older stock backup that matches your main version number.

S-off like a god mode, you can read and write partitions that are normally locked, and indeed do things like you described above. But as you only want a lower version of your stock rom i would not take it that far.

Uless i keep the phone super steady my pics and videos are a bit blurry. Before the update it took sharp pics and vids even if moving the phone. I could also take vids of fast moving stuff like fairground rides and when i played them back on phone i could pause them anywherep in the vid and the pause was always super sharp.
I have already had the issue with the coating coming off the camera lens but i took all that off and fixed that issue.
So yes thanks for your time guys and i would appreciate the bestest easiest way to take s off
Thanks
Look for firewater. When firewater fails you need sunshine. Those are the only 2 options to gain s-off !
Here is a video you can watch. make sure you watch the whole thing first.

Hi
Ive been doing some good searching and people are saying that i dont need s_off to flash a stock recovery rom to my phone and that i only need unlock.
I have unlocked it at htc dev and i have tried flashing the stock rom image using fastboot and clearing the cache but no changes on my phone.
Somebody also said that i needed to flash a nandroid backup first but when i download the philz touchwiz one i dont know what to do with it?
Any help please, this is a lot more complicated than i bargained for.
Cheers
Read my thread better, also post #2. It's described there what to do with a nandroid backup !

Hi Mr Hofs
I dont mean to contradict but in your first post you said i didnt need s_off and a bit later you said i needed firewater so i could get s_off.
Im really confused, do i need s_off to flash a stock rom to an earlier version, do i need to flash one of the nandroids first like you said and then flash the stock, if so i didnt see where your thread was telling me how to flash a nandroid rom.
Im sorry if i am coming across as a bit thick but the info i am getting from everyone on the net does loads of contradicting and makes it very confusing.
Cheers
Mick..
No you do not need S-OFF to flash a lower version of software. what you need in total is :
1: unlocked bootloader
2: the custom recovery which the nandroid is made with
3: the nandroid backup that matches your software but a lower version (probably the 1.54 base)
4: unpack the nandroid backup to the respective folder on the internal memory
5: perform a full wipe in the recovery (NOT the sdcard/internal memory of course)
6: restore the nandroid and reboot to check it works
7: flash back the stock htc recovery to enable OTA again (if you wish to upgrade in the future)

Oh dear, i know you are going to think im stupid but i don't fully understand what you mean, are you saying that the nandroid that i downloaded which is 2014-06-02.16.15.49_KOT49H_release-keys, that i put this folder on my sd card?
Then are you saying that i do a wipe using fastboot on my computer or fastboot on the phone?
Then how do i do restore the nandroid?

That's why i wrote all that in my thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2701376
i am not repeating what's already written
Ok i will have a real good look at that link, i didn't realise that you had a thread detailing it all, obviousley i wouldn't expect you to repeat yourself so i will try and understand the stuff in the link, fingers crossed i might get somewhere.
Really wish i hadn't done the update, can't believe it knacked my camera, thats the main reason i got the htc m8 for the camera, and it was great before the bleeding update to 4.4.3.
I do appreciate you helping, dint realise it would be so daunting.

it's all pretty logical, don't think to far outside the box. Getting the files in the correct place is the hardest part, flashing is easy

Hello Again
Ok i think im getting it, i can now boot the phone using phils touchwiz, comes up with the interface but for the life in me i cant make it backup or restore from where i want.
I did a backup and it saved it to the phones internal storage but i cant see the backup using any file managers but it is there if i try to restore the backup using the interface.
Long story short i cant make it find the files i want to restore, i have changed the path in the settings but just cant get it to work.
Please please help.
Cheers
