[Q] Sprint HTC One HK Edition - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey Guys, I'm interested in buying a HTC M8 Harman Kardon Edition, but I noticed the phone is only available from Sprint..
If I were to buy the phone without a plan, would I be able to use it normally on another GSM network??
Thanks in advance!!

I am pretty sure sprint phones will not work on gsm networks because they are cdma-based.

Not really... Sprint HTC One M8 does have gsm bands and can be used on international gsm network. But GSM part of the phone requires to be unlocked either by Sprint or by the user using some tutorials on xda :good:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2718150

Might as well get an att or tmobile variant and root/s-off and flash the HK mod.

The way I understand it is that the gsm bands in a sprint phone are only used for lte data. Voice/talk is still cdma.

That's what I would do.
@vedesh45
Don't know what bands/frequencies are used in your neck of the woods but, instead of the att or tmobile version, I would opt for the developer or unlocked edition(basically the same as the att version but without the carrier bloatware and both have support for more bands than the tmobile version) and then add the HK mod. Not sure how well that works because I have not tried it myself as I am pretty happy with boomsound.

I live in Trinidad.. The 3G data uses the 1900Mhz band..
There really isn't anything fancy or special with the network..
I was considering purchasing a regular HTC M8, but I think the speakers on the HK model are different, so I'm not sure if the mod will damage the original speakers..
Do you guys think it will work if I buy it and unlock the network??
Sorry for the noob questions, I'm kinda stubborn when it comes to something involving audio quality.. Cons of being a Sound Engineer..:silly:

IMO it's harder for a beginner to unlock a Sprint HTC One M8 for GSM network than convert a regular HTC One M8 to H/K edition.
And I don't think the speakers are different, if they were I bet Sprint and HTC would advertise it

GSM bands can be used for 2G and 3G. One of my friend bought a Sprint HTC One M8 on ebay for cheap to use it in France and he gets voice and data (but no 4G)

Yes, the AT&T variant of the HTC ONE X will be able to receive T-Mobile's Band 4 or true LTE if your area has it.

Depends on your needs. Are you looking to use your phone for social media/videos? If so, I'd go with the LTE At&t variant. If you're looking to play games a lot, flash ROMs, etc., go with the international quadcore; It has more internal storage and the better cpu/gpu. Good luck!

Um... what? Why bother getting the Verizon variant of the One if you're going to be using it on AT&T's network? Yes, it'll work because all of Verizon's new smartphones are unlocked and support GSM, but... why?
Just buy the AT&T variant. Same thing, plus you'll have working FM radio and LTE support on AT&T and T-Mobile if you want it in the future.

TMK, it should work. If memory serves, the Verizon HTC One is just a standard global HTC One with Verizon's customizations. Now, having said that, Verizon has been known to disable\completely remove\block the GSM functionality of global phones in the past when they release a version for their network(Droid Bionic, Droid RAZR, ect..) so it's entirely possible that, while the phone is physically capable of operating outside Verizon's network, that Verizon has blocked it from doing so.

You are correct. Verizon is required to have all global-capable phones unlocked out of the box. This is why the Verizon iPhone 5 was such a magnet for fraud.
I have a Verizon HTC One M8 and I have AT&T. I can get it to pick up service but for the life of me it will not pick up HSPA+ or 3G. So far I have only been able to get it running on Edge which obviously is unacceptable. Verizon phones can be such a pain in the ass. Anyone have any suggestions?

In all fairness you are asking about the HTC one m8 and this is a thread for the m7 so if you wanna try and get a real response you might want to check out the Verizon m8 forums not the m7. This subject has been been brought up before for the m7 and its not possible. The m8 on the other hand once again is a different phone. I know they have had success getting lte and all that working for our phone to T-Mobile.

It wasn't a witty response. Was a real actual question. I see so many threads of people buying Verizon phones and try to make them fully work on gsm networks. Just because it says global phone doesn't mean every part of the phone will work on gsm networks. So that's why I asked is the Verizon version cheaper than its gsm counterparts.

Yes, it works fine with HSPA+. For LTE, it could connect with LTE, but my situation is I can't make phone calls and text messages under LTE. Hope this would help.
The Verizon HTC One will work on any network, I can't speak for bands/speeds.
I'm in New Zealand, I brought my VZW One with me, works like a charm on all of their GSM networks here.

WiFi calling on non-branded M8

I'm considering switching from ATT, but my understanding is that wifi calling is only available with TMO branded phones. Mine is the factory unlocked model (BS_US001/0P6B12000). I'm SuperCID, so was wondering if I could emulate a TMO phone by flashing their RUU. Would I have to change my MID (if that is even possible)?

There are a few custom ROMs that allow TMO WiFi calling. I know, and have tested, both Viper and Sky Dragon. While they are obviously not stock, they both work on my BS_US002.
Just flash T-MO RUU after SuperCid'ing. I have the same terminal and got around that issue following those steps!. Remember to do your backups.

Taking about me. Cuz I'm vzw and AT&T is gsm. I forgot bout that, duh... But I am able to run gsm type Rom with little to no problem....I'm just looking to see how I can enable all gsm lte bands for use. I try to drive and between towers I lose signal and can't reconnect, so I either have to toggle airplane to get it back, or just use hspa. It runs ok... But I'd like to get full potential.

A Cdma varient never can be full potential of the gsm varient. i use to have the sprint varient and i unlocked it to tmobile, yes it worked, but it wouldnt stay connected to tmobile, i would constantly have to manually search for tmobile network, so if i never looked at my phone it would just disconnect by itself, i received calls fine but text messages would come once i connected to tmobile again.
plus the hardware is just not capable of all the gsm bands, so to get full potential, sell it and get a gsm one

No way to tell for now. Most likely when they become available and they are out in the public can we compare model numbers. Or if HTC details this on sunday.
I would put my money on it being the same as before. GSM variant with only difference being specific frequency bands enabled on carrier models and two separate CDMA models for Sprint/Verizon.
It would be a great idea to have a universal GSM/CDMA model like the iPhone and Nexus 6, but yea i doubt it.
I think Multiple

I think there is going to be multiple models as the US companies take into consideration the user preferences.

I hope that's not the case this time. If the unlocked version of the M9 doesn't support T-Mobile (the unlocked M8 was AT&T only) I'm going to pass on this and maybe get a Z3. I don't want a phone loaded down with T-Mobile's crap and have to wait for T-Mobile to push updates out.
It looks like there will be 2 separate versions for AT&T and T-Mobile:
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2477484,00.asp
The AT&T version covers the T-Mobile LTE bands, and will probably be sold as the unlocked version as well. I'm assuming it won't cover T-Mobile's AWS 1700, just like the unlocked M8.

Grr.. Man these carriers are the worst thing. I was hoping the unlocked model will have all the bands but looks like it will just be the AT&T model minus logo and AT&T bloat like last year. Hopefully that's not the case but highly unlikely.

M9 Developer or M9 Unlocked Model

Verizon is going to let me choose between an unlocked phone and developer model phone. Which one should I choose? (in terms of ROM support, ease up update access, root...etc)
Nevermind, its unlocked version only. I get to try the phone out and see if it is still plagued by the blurry, color/light bleed/auto focus issue or not. If it is, they will let me get a Note 4

How is that going to work the dev and unlocked m9's are supposed to be gsm only meaning no cdma ? And the LTE bands for verizon are not supposed to be enabled on the non verizon versions of the m9 ?
Actually all the verizon m9's are unlocked because verizon does not sim lock phones any more they just lock the bootloaders and wont let htc dev unlock them.

Technically, All newer phones have both GSM and CDMA radios. The Qualcomm chips (from what I read) have both radios in them already. My dad has a GS4 (CDMA) and is on a GSM network in Israel. So, saying this, it only makes sense that it should be able to work. It's just weird
Ima tearing a new butthole into Verizon because of all the bullcrap they've told me (I don't know enough about the unlocked models), so you could probably count this as more crap. However, they did also offer a Galaxy Note 4 at a discount (on edge). If I get that for a total of 650 (instead of $600 for M9) or $600, should I? I love the M9's speakers with a strong passion, but I do like the bigger screen and higher resolution...let alone the better camera...I read into mods and of course with Knox and all..I dunno about root.

Ok so lets say all of them have cdma built in and your right, so then how do you get the bands enabled for verizon LTE on a gsm m9 such as the unlocked m9 sold by htc directly ?
The posts about this on the m8 all required s-off to enable other bands such as enable the bands on a verizon m8 to get Tmobile LTE and then people still had issues having to toggle airplane mode all the time to get the Tmobile LTE back working on their verizon m8.
I had tried and tried to convert my verizon m8 to a dev edition like people did on the gsm versions which they all could but no one ever figured out how to get it done.
So my ultimate question is how would they get verizon LTE bands enabled on a gsm based carrier unlocked m9 that is not s-off ?

Oh and tear into verizon all you like bro let me help with that lol as I hate them as much as you do.
And I think the sammys have the bands enabled for basically all LTE in all the major carriers like the nexus 6 so they can run on any network.
I think they should require all phones to work on any network just like the nexus 6 so one version can work on any network, I guess we can dream right that would be my only complaint with htc that they dont enable the bands for all networks here in the USA.

1. You are probably right about the T-Mobile thing, but it IS T-mobile. I don't even think they, or sprint can keep up with the big boys. So If I got the GSM unlocked...and did the paypal buy over a year option, I wouldn't re-activate on Verizon for quite a while. I plan on going to Israel so I don't need a CDMA device for a while...Even so, the M9 has the bands for all of the networks, last time I checked. Saying that, I will already have S-OFF because it would be a dev edition, or the unlocked version that I would just S-OFF through HTC Dev. Saying ALL of this, even if I do come back to USA and CAN'T be on Verizon (whom I think is better then ATT), then I could go ATT. Ya know? That is IF I came back to the USA. So what do you think now? (With more information about the situation).
