Removed. I Can now access the native tether from the normal settings menu. Need to look into what I did further.

I have wifi tether app installed but when I open and run it it constantly acts like it looses 3g connection. computer will connect with local access only. phone will have 3g logo and will switch between up and down arrows then have both then none then the 3g logo will dissapear. it acts like it is constantly switching between channel/signals but never stays connected. I am on a rooted 2.3.4 using downgrade and s-off running stock+ rom. I had wifi tether working in the past after root and rom but now it doesnt. my wife is on a rooted 2.2 with no issues. we have same settings and radios and hers works fine. I have used tb to uninstall and restore older versions I have uninstalled and downloaded the newest apk version I could find and it still does the same thing. The phone has no issues connecting to other wifi hotspots(home or public) and work fine on its own data for internet surfing. the only problem Im having is with wifi tether to connect laptop to.

any ideas or different free rooted apps?

honestly got no idea what that is.
routing fix button checked appears to fix it this time. currently using laptop on wifi. we will see how long it lasts this time.

Therr is a way to change settings in the epst menu which you access by dialing ##778#, that will allow you to use the stock hotspot app for free.

Dial ##778# and hit call. A menu should appear, select edit mode. A password box will appear enter six zero's (000000) as the password. A menu will appear select security. Look for and change any entries that look like "your#@dun.vzw3g.com" remove the "dun." so it looks like "your#@vzw3g.com". Then hit back to the main menu and select M.IP Default profile and look for and change the same entries as before. Once done hit menu and commit changes, the phone will reboot. Once rebooted use the stock app as normal ignoring the you must subscribe to this service message. Note if you do a *228 option 1, an ruu, or a factory reset from the settings menu or hboot, or have to reactivate the phone, you will have to edit the settings again before using the stock hotspot app. I have been doing it for years and verizion is none the wiser. There are either 2 or 3 entries which need to be edited.

Hey all,
I have a question. I have been trying to figure out where you can configure if the built in wifi AP shows up on the top level settings page or deep in more settings / tethering and portable hotspot submenu.
Where can that be changed? Some ROMs have the AP on the top level. Verizon does that by default and I found the lines in the stock AT&T secsettings.apk (settings_headers.xml) but I just can't seem to figure out where that bool or buildprop setting is, that tells android to put the AP in the top level
Any help would be much appreciated!

Tweak box has a setting for that. You need xposed framework installed.

Did you mean you want a way to turn off available open networks?
If so, you can go to Settings->Wi-Fi->options(three dots)->Advanced Wi-Fi then untick Wi-Fi notification.
You don't need root for this.
If you wish to disable the wifi bars which represent connectivity while wifi is on, then you'll need root for that.

Thanks @insinc, so simple indeed.
So my stupid self accidentally deleted my tethering provision (apk) instead of duplicating it. If someone could back up theirs and upload here that would be awesome. I'm currently rooted on Lollipop if that's any different. Thanks in advance.
Edit: I use the adroid app WiFi Tether so I do not use the native tethering application. If deleting the tethering provision wouldn it affect my WiFi Tether app? I notice now turning it on it gets a tethering provision error but that's about it. I press OK and my WiFi Tether continues and starts up like normal.

Here is the problem.* My phone is rooted with CF-Auto Root. I downloaded SuperSU successfully and then downloaded the .APK for Wifi Tether Router.
It successfully downloaded! * I open the application and go to configure WIFI ROUTER, I then receive a notification from the program saying, "WARNING You are currently using Android 4.3/4.4 If the network is not transmitted, disables (UNCHECK) the 'Scan always available' from the screen that appears.*
That message was verbatim from what my phone was saying.
Once I close the message the phone automatically opens my phones IP settings. Network notification tab is unable to be turned on and of, it is currently selected as "ON", and Passpoint is currently selected as "off".
I press the back option on my phone and it takes me back to the configuration screen for "Wifi Tether Router". I then begin to change my device settings starting with method. I choose* Method 3-(HostApd) and press back. I choose WLAN0 as my interface. I scroll down to Prevents Stand By and make sure IT IS checked. after that I Make sure that HostApd Patch is checked off as well.
I scroll down to APN settings and my screen is completely grayed out with all the different Access Point Names unavailable. the ADD option is also grayed out.
I then set my Hot spot settings.
ssid- wififorme
encryption - wpa2-psk
wifi password -* ihatecheeseburgers
wifi channel- 1

Im done at this point. I press back and I am at the home screen for the program. I select ENABLE WIFI ROUTER and phone request ask me to grant* access. I do. The phone disables router then resets the radio and the phone is enabling WiFi Router.... waiting... phone grants access and it displays my wifi settings.
The program is now running at this point but is not sending data or receiving it. I jump on my laptop and the wifi network is not showing up either.
What did I do wrong and how can I fix this issue?

I have the same issue and I can't get wifi hotspot working on my phone either. I want to use it to play my chromecast in my car.
