I have the Nexus 5 and really like it, but always craving a new phone. Has anyone switched from the Nexus 5 to G3 and what are your thoughts on it?
I think a lot of us have. This is my first non-Nexus device in a long time and I have absolutely no regrets about the switch. As far as the feel of the phone, it really feels like a bigger & more high end version of the Nexus 5 to me. I'm actually enjoying the features in the LG ROM on this phone as well. Some de-bloating was required but after that this phone is just as fast as my Nexus 5 was. And the camera... there really just is no comparison between the two phones in terms of the camera. It's an enormous improvement. The knock on/off features are really cool as well.
If you like your Nexus 5 but want a bigger screen, significantly better camera, and better battery life then you will absolutely love this phone. I promise.

I second that, I'm finding very little reason to switch to another ROM although I might want to try another kernel when those do come out.
The built in apps like the LG keyboard, LG quickmemo and LG health are also pretty decent.

Switched from a N5 3 weeks ago and I'm very happy with my decision. I've had zero issues with running stock and all I've done was root to debloat and run TiBu.
I went from the N4, to the G2, to the G3.

G3 with the removable battery & sd card is 2 sweet options to have once again coming from the N5, but if you into heavy customization and like to flash lots of Roms to meet your purposes then i doubt your going to get your fill of those things on the G3. If i was you i would check out your phone carrier's development section, and see if the development or lack there of, is something you might be able to deal with long term.
Tweaksbox on this phone makes it as good as any n5 rom. I had the n4 and cousin had an n5 and i was gunna get it in may but secided to wait for this. No regrets. Never going nexus again, never have to worry about storage, battery, having old tech, a better screen or anything. This is the best phone ive used and im a techie so i know my stuff.

One thing I have noticed is that the camera on the N5 is horrible, so that would be a big improvement. Thanks for the feedback.

I am less and less into customization, but I do like flashing ROMs. I am enjoying Android L right now, but I figure in a few months, that will be available for the G3 via ROM or rolled out. Are you thinking there won't be much development for this phone?
Made the switch. The G3 will have development, though obviously nothing like the N5 because it's not a developer phone.
I don't miss my N5 at all. Better screen, better battery life, better camera, MUCH better headphone output, more storage, IR blaster, the list goes on.

Good point, giving up a developer phone, but gaining so much more. I'll have to go look at it more this weekend. Thanks everyone.

If i had to place a bet, i don't think development is going to be that great on this device, usually a device has a strong buzz even before its released about what developers are upgrading to it and so on. I also don't think there was strong development on the G2, and i'm sure its not helping that the G3 is coming on the heels of the M8 and S5 which a lot of the those developers probably upgraded from the M7 and S4. Also with android L to play with on the N5 I don't like the chances of having various Roms on the G3, you might want to stick with the N5 for a while.

I'm in the same boat, seriously considering the g3 but I am worried about giving up my n5. I keep reading about this tweakbox but my question is how fast is a rooted g3 going to feel when compared to my n5 running a custom ROM and ART?

They both use the same SIM standard I think so you can always switch back to your N5 when you need a ROM fix!

I ran Purity and ART on N5 and then L Preview which of course is uber smooth..but after fiddling with debloating and various optimisations I can say unreservedly the G3 is a fine upgrade over the N5. Better battery, screen and camera top off a truly flagship product even with LGs overlay. I also think the G3 feels better in hand naked or with Diztronics case than N5. N6 will have to be even that much better for me to leave G3. Cheers!

Thanks that was exactly what I was wondering. I just have to decide whether I want to wait and see what the nexus 6 looks like or not.

Hi all, the screen of my nexus 5 is shattered but still functioning and I am having a bit of a dilemma. I've heard a lot of good things about the G3 and held one in my hands and it's an awesome phone but all of my android phones were Nexus devices so I don't really know how much time non nexus devices wait for a new android release. Also, I've been tracking the Original Android Development for the G3 for quite a while and I'm kind of disappointed that there aren't any ROMs yet, will there be any eventually? And finally this question is to anyone that switched from a Nexus device or a stock android device, is LG's skin comparable to stock android, worse or better?
I would appreciate your thoughts on this, thanks in advance!
I just got this G3 on Tuesday. Coming from a Nexus 5, I wasn't too thrilled with it at first. I had a hard time adjusting to the size difference, and just the pure speed that the Nexus has. Definitely much less development, but the phone also hasn't been out very long.. My main reasoning behind leaving the Nexus was the battery lif, so I might still end up with the HTC One

Swapped my N5 for the G3.
The N5 was just crappy.
Bad Build Quality, Bad Camera, Bad Speaker Ecc...
And it doenn't even feel premium on the hands...
One word: Go for it!
The G3 Definetly feels premium.
Sent from from my LG-D855
The N5 didn't feel or look crappy at all in my opinion. I use cases anyway so that's irrelevant for me.
The G3 wins in display, camera, speaker & audio, storage, functionality (stock features), and battery life. The N5 is slightly smoother at times and has better dev support, but that's it. I thought I'd be Nexus for as long as possible - I was wrong. If custom ROMs are really that big of a deal, then you may be disappointed. But even with my N5 I only rooted it. Never had a need for more features on that phone, and the stock G3 ROM is pretty good.

Well i love the n5 but if i had to pick any thing other than it it would be g3 amazing device
I found the N5 absolutely detestable. A wretched thing that should never have been released. The G3 has its issues, mainly with the screen, but the screen is still better than the awful one on the N5.
So I have an upgrade available (currently using a Note 3) and I was wondering how people are liking this phone? I'm really struggling on what my next smartphone will be since there are so many good choices out there right now. Thanks!
It's hard to judge. I'm not familiar with the note 3, but I came from a gs4 and the g3 is worlds better. Depends on you though. But honestly if I were you I would hold out for a few weeks at least. New moto x, note 4, and end of October comes (rumored) nexus 6. All new phones come with only small changes in hardware, nothing gotta have and revolutionary. But I will say that so far I'm loving this g3. Bone stock was honestly a tad disappointing, but now I run skydragon ROM and kernel and with a few small tweaks this phone is near perfect. I wasn't a huge fan of amoled, it felt very neon and unnatural but I did love the deep blacks. Personally I'll probably never get another Samsung device again.

Check out this thread, where several others (including myself) moved from the Note 3 to the LG G3 and gave our opinions, views and takes on both.
I came from an S4 and I prefer the screen to AMOLED. Even though this phone is bigger than S4 it doesnt feel like it at all
I came from Verizon s4...and had that phone humming.... The g3 blows it away. My battery life record is over 70hrs...and I typically go 36hrs or more. I run ZoneROM and have it deflated as much as possible.

lmfao! you need to go to the iphone rom threads... oh wait... apple doesnt let you do that, my bad. Hey guess what you will get with the iphone 6 though... the same boring dated OS that they have had for years with a couple new textures and colors though.. oooooooohhhhhhhhhh. Go wait in line somewhere.
Anyway, to the OP. I have used samsung quite a lot (had an s2, s3, skiiped the 4, and a s5) and my wife has a note 3. IF you are going to use the "note" features, it might be worth considering. HOWEVER, if you dont need a stylus, this thing blows any samsung out of the water on pretty much every level. Software is better, hardware is better (mostly), the g3 is super fast, great on battery, has great ergonomics (the s5 felt more awkward to use than this).
Google Nexus 6 Reveal Page
Android 5.0 Lollipop
According to the nexus 6 page on the very bottom it seems that it will be available on all 4 big carriers, Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, and T-mobile. Ofc; you can still get it from the Play store. The release date given by google is late october; no specification as to if it applies to just the play store or the carriers as well. I'm hoping it releases late this October because I get my upgrade late November. If I have to I will probably wait, I'm sure many of our dev's here will successfully port Android 5.0 to our devices. I'm more interested in the full release of the OS; the multitasking features and the uniform material design looks so nice.
So, thoughts? Is android 5.0 everything you have hoped for? Will you be upgrading to a Nexus 6 soon?
I somehow managed to delete my opinion on the the device, I'm loving the specs; the 6" screen is pushing me away though.
When I say I plan on upgrading to the Nexus 6 I'm not 100% set on it yet. I was planning on going with the HTC One M8 simply because of the screen size, but I have used a LG G3 in stores before and I love how amazing the screen is so I'm very torn. The LG OG was such a great device for it's time, shame it never got an official update past 4.1 but it's hard to complain with all the dev support we get with it.
I might go for it but I'm still hating Google's propensity to think that cloud storage can replace the function of a microsd slot. Also a 6-inch screen, why? The phone still has to fit in my pocket. At this rate the number of people on these forums with manbags is going to blow up. Also $649 unlocked... ouch. I honestly don't know what Google was thinking here. They might be pushing their luck a little too hard here but I won't really know until I can hold it in my hand. On paper the size of the LG G3 used to sound like an atrocity so we'll see. Regardless the price isn't much of an issue if you pay it out over the length of a contract anyways but honestly, I'm disappointed.

I mean, when you look at the specs, that's when you realize what all that money is really going to.
I just want the finished Android L roms to get ported to the LGOG. As long as i'm up to date and the roms arent too buggy, I can stick with my LGOG for another year if I have to.
We'll definitely get some L ROMs sooner or later. We have some amazing developers here for our phone, so be sure that once the major ROM devs update their sources, we'll get updated as well.
I think since the 6 is WAY too big for my personal use, I'm gonna jump to the Nexus 5 next.

I have the G3 now and I love it. Battery life has been better for me than on the lgog, even with that amazing screen. The major downside to the G3 is development but we finally received twrp so the roms will be coming. But having root, freezing/deleting bloat(and there is a lot of it) and making mods have helped my g3 be lag free, last over 40 hours on a full charge and just be generally awesome. If you want something that is also awesome but has a ton of development - go with the m8. A lot of devs and themers who had lgogs grabbed the m8 so you will be in good company. Only a few of us from here have the G3 but Im happy with my choice. It's big but not unruly, the new nexus looks good but too big and still no sd card. And if 3000mah battery isnt big enough for you, zerolemon is selling a 9000mah battery you can swap right in. Just my two cents.

First off, how ya been buddy? Secondly - the nexus 6 looks great but I'm a little disappointed in a few things, size being one of em, still no sdcard and still not 64bit. The rumors made me have higher hopes - its still gonna be a great phone with an insane amount of support. I have no use for it but I am really impressed by the nexus 9(my nexus 7 is collecting dust). That processor, even being a dual core and only having 2 gb of ram is crazy fast, and it's 64bit!

I've been good man, how have you been? Glad to see you around these parts one more time
For me, I'm drawn to the N6 because I know it'll drop down to a decent price by time my upgrade is due (which would be summer of 2015), and, assuming I even get it, it'd be the most high-end phone I've ever owned, plus it's a Nexus, so development is guaranteed. I'm just modest If I were to get a G2, I'd be pretty happy with that.

Ha ha yeah I was checking on one of my bootanimations and saw this thread. Im good, biked more than I ever have so Im really sore but other than that Im good.
Nexus devices definitely have the best support but HTC is pretty solid(as is Sony, sadly we can't get xperia on sprint) and they come with other perks(removable storage, etc). I know HTC will be releasing another flagship(from some rumors, 2) before you're due for your upgrade and I have a feeling it will be better(and smaller) than the nexus 6. Biggest drawback to the HTC flagships seems to be the camera but that's also been an issue on Nexus devices. Nexus devices are still a great way to go. Their biggest selling point is having official updates before anyone else. My nexus 7 is solid, but between my phone and laptop I just dont have a need for a tablet. I wanted to hold out for the nexus 6 myself but now Im glad I didn't. Just too big for me and LG fixed my biggest issue with the lgog - sdcard support.
They're all great phones with pros and cons tho - really does depend on the user.
or to buy other phones?

Oneplus One is definitely not the best phone out there right now lol.
I think everyone have their favorite phone because everyone has different things they gonna or wanna do with it but i love my G3
Depending on your needs, the LG G3 is probably the best phone you can currently get. It does have some lag and stutter, the brightness isn't that high, and battery is just okay, but in terms of screen quality and size, design, build quality, camera, and features, it's hard to beat.
In the past year, I've used the Galaxy S5, Htc One m8, Xperia Z1, Note 3 and now G3. I can honestly say the LG G3 is my personal favorite (Note 3 close second).

Going by the number of bad reviews i've seen, (0) and i've seen so many positives
And the fact that it's top of the benchmark apps
And the fact that I hate my G3 with a passion because it doesn't run smooth like a one
My opinion is that it's definately one of the best out there and the price makes it the very best of those
One of the bet top tier phones right now - the stock rom just needs a little work - updates are rolling out slowly.
I definately dont regret my purchase at all and being one of the only guys out of my firends to NOT have a Samsung - it gets a tonne of comments about how slick it looks.

Why i chose the LG G3 :
The screen is realy stunning !
Knock code is the best tool i ever seen for locking/unlocking the screen!
LG Case and circle apps are very conveniant !
I regret the JACK/AUX issue, but it's a software issue known between LG and KK4.4.2. It should be solved soon.
Hi own A Xperia Z2.Can I switch to G3.How is colour on G3 screen as compared to Z2.I took a look at the phone but just noticed that it have faded icons,is it just ui or the screen

I'm personally going to sell my G3 and get the Moto Turbo. That will have the best specs out of any phone released up until now, or that has been rumored to come out this year.
I have HTC M8 (Dev Ed.), Nexus 5 and LG G3 (D855). My personal favorite is M8, mainly because of the ability to unlock the boot loader and availability of many custom ROMs. Also, it looks and feel more premium (again, personal preference) and the awesome stereo sound. G3 is a good phone but not something I would like to keep. G3 is still at 4.4.2 version while others have moved on to 4.4.4. I will be selling my G3 very soon. If you are not into rooting and flashing Custom Roms, either one of the listed phones will serve you well. I am giving Nexus 5 to my son as it's easy for him to hold in his little hands.

Yes.
mhm.. its look like that the phones of 2014 are bad.. not my taste :/
i will wait for 2015, or for Oppo n3.
Definitely a good buy. It has very good prices from operators. I got mine at a very good price compared to the M8 for ex.
Pros:
The overall size is great (feels "smaller" than it is - at least to me)
The screen is a plus and I like that the most.
Good and powerful camera (comparing here with my nexuses so far).
Latest updates (10L) got the "stock" firmware to be less annoying.
It has a bunch of neat optimizations / customization here and there.
Knock gestures, I constantly tap other phones to wake them now ... addicting
Cons:
The software is not that "clean". Not that cartoon-ish as the G2 software but still no AOSP. At time is clunky and "unresponsive".
The speaker is overrated. It's not that loud or clear or anything - just "amped".
No custom software / clunky tools that make you "tremble" when you do some tweaks to the software (clearly personal opinion here). Very slow update cycles so far.
Still plastic, not the "premium" build that some look for.
Back buttons still seem awkward after a few weeks but it's something you can live with.
All those CON's are software except the Plastic/Speaker.
2 cons is pretty good
I think the brushed backing looks awesome.
Yes, my only cons are the software, I have been so much accustomed to AOSP that I started to hate slow OEM customizations. Other than that the phone is good and works quite ok (though if you asked me after the first week I was very close to selling it).
I'm honestly not sure which phone to choose.
May you roll up some personal views on the matter?
Because right now I am using both phones every second day, and I really can't make up my mind regarding this matter.. So listening to someone else would help.
Im facing that the software on the nexus 5x and the ability to customize it so much more is a huge adventage, however the S6 got some great specs.
So yeh.
Opinions please, if that's allowed to ask for here I would gladly appreciate a nice discussion with personal opinions
Regards!
Wish it were that simple that we could say "sure that's easy go with the 5X" and you'd be as happy as a clam by choosing what we suggest you pick. Since that's not reality only you can decide. You use both phones why can't you decide? Honestly, what can we offer that would sway you one way or the other? Do you really want to base your decision off of what 'we' say rather than 'your own experience' using both devices? Honest questions
I had an S6 from August to this past January before I traded it for a 5x. There are a few things I miss, such as the extra bright screen and overall build quality. The S6 camera is definitely more detailed and faster as well, but I prefer the low light performance of the 5x by far.
All in all, I'm much happier with the 5x as I prefer stock Android vs Touchwiz and being first to get the latest updates.
I'm completely fed up with touchwiz and all of the bloat on Samsung phones. It got to be as bad as HTC sense. And unless you have the newest model of a flagship phone, you are most likely not going to get an update. I have been very pleased with my 5x and no contract and $300 for a brand new phone, I couldn't pass it up.

Nexus. Always Nexus. I have no patience any more for manufacturer's and carrier's crapware. Give me pure, stock Android running on the current reference device.
I am picking me up an s6 for $200 then to decide which is work phone and which will be personal phone.

I get your point here, I do. But my personal experience varies so much, and I'm afraid there are things i've overseen the last 9 days of having them both available. Fingerprint location, build quality, camera features, screen brightness and contrast, saturation etc... so many things on them both that varies, but still makes them good their own way. Software updates, that's a good one mentioned.

Thanks for sharing your experience. After a day of using the nexus, I kind of miss the metal edges on the S6 and the performance which makes the experience butter-smooth. After a day using the S6 I miss the clean Android, the fingerprint-scanner on the back and the amazing low light shots with the camera.
So... gosh im confused.

Unless you trip KNOX and flash custom ROMs - CM is in development, however the exynos chipset seems to be a pain in the ass.
Anyway, thanks everyone. I take all this in consideration and I will keep it in mind when using them both. Hopefully i'll sort out my mind soon.
Keeping it short. Had the s6, it sucked. Hard...
Great build and specs, worthless reception and horrible batterylife. So even though I loved the rest, the basics sucked. The nexus 5x is great, but awfull feel. I hate plastic. But all the rest is awsome. So sticking with it for now.
Wishing you luck !
I'd go with the 6P haha

Thanks for the interpretation. I'm glad to hear I'm not alone judging the plasty feel of it. The vibration aswell, sounds like a child's toy.
Currently using the 5x and got stunned over the well performing battery. Already got 5 h with screen on, using a custom kernel and a few tweaks
That was another point... I'm not into flashing roms on Nexus devices (as I like stock Android) but I had planned to flash CM on the S6. Not researching this before my purchase was a big mistake as I had no idea about the drama with Samsung Exynos chips not being open sourced.. CM will probably never be up to snuff on the S6.

Just to answer you - The way it looks now (I've been closely paying attention) it seems like the development is going forward with the CM build for s6. It will be at least usable pretty soon. Well, it's a guess because they need to reverse engineer the stuff on the phone.
Compared to the nexus devices it's rediclious. I tested cm13 on my 5x and got stunned. So many possibilities and I must confess that I'm obsessed with flashing roms and stuff. That's kind of the reason I chose to buy my nexus. That's probably the best thing ever
