Hello. I am wanting to OTA, but am not s-off yet. Unlocked bootloader with TWRP and s-on.
My question is, can I do a nandroid backup in TWRP, then install the latest OTA to try it out, then go back to that nandroid backup if I am unhappy with the OTA update?
My goal here is to try out the "wifi calling" feature sprint has implemented in the new OTA update.
Alternatively, is there any way for me to "install" the wifi calling feature on my current stock rom without OTA updating?
first you cant OTA with a custom recovery you need to go to stock recovery but if you did a nandroid flashed stock recovery then did the OTA then back to TWRP yes you can go back. the only issues i see is firmware and kernel. when you OTA you will get a new firmware update along with a new hboot that might cause some issues going backward, also the kernel may not be compatible as well with the old stuff. Being S-On from my understanding you cant flash a kernel in recovery.

Hi
I'm desperately looking for any Bell mobility stock 1.34.666.5 or Over.
The camera button is not working so I sent my phone to repair but they send it back because I do not have the right rom that was provided with my phone. I was able to unroot and put back 1.34.666.1 (the only one that is available it seems) but the technical support told me that my phone shipped with 1.34.666.5 and that they can't do anything unless I'm putting back this rom.
I tried getting OTA updates for 1.34.666.1 but it's not available. Minimum rom # to get OTA updates have to be 1.34.666.5
I'm screwed.
Regards
I have a nandroid backup of the stock ROM...it's rooted though.
Will I be able to flash using Clockwork Recovery? I can manage to remove root after flashing, I think.
Yes, flashable via Clockwork.
I'll let you know when I have it uploaded.
...and it's up.
https://xda:[email protected]/_xda/Bell.DZ.Stock.ROOTED.7z
Some notes:
- I only included the system and boot portions of the nandroid backup due to privacy concerns
- As such, you should do a system and boot restore (after a full wipe, of course) under "Advanced Restore"
- As mentioned earlier, this is rooted (so you'll need to unroot)
Hope this helps. Let us know how it goes.
Good news, I have been able to return to stock 1.34.666.5. Thank you very much for your backup.
I was thinking going unrooted was to be easy but i'm a little bit stuck.
How can I unroot and put back stock bootloader without flashing a new rom.
If I have to flash a new rom, is there a way to build one based on the backup you provided?
I've look at software update and there's an OTA update available for my phone. I tried to install but because I do not have the right bootloader (I think that's the problem) I'm unable to do the OTA update.
Thanks.

That's good to hear. I'd recommend making your own nandroid backup immediately.
As for the bootloader, you're sure you flashed the ENG HBOOT during the rooting process? If that's the case, I'm not sure where you can find the stock HBOOT...
Yes, I installed the Eng HBoot.
I'm trying now renaming the OTA update.zip, put on the root of sdcard and make recovery to install that update but I got an error about getprop CID?? and the update failed...
Still looking for a solution.
How did you make out Tonkadan? I'm in the same boat. I heard that if you did apply this update that you would not be able to root your phone anymore.
I' still rooted. I'm unable to go back to stock. I'm using cyanogenmod 7 for now but would really want to go back to stock if somone have the official Bell rom over 1.34.666.5.
... Or any way to get OTA updates for RUU 1.34.666.1 that is available on shippedroms.com
I have an LTE Galaxy Nexus and would like to keep the stock ROM with having root to be able to wireless tether, etc. I would also like to be able to update to the official 4.0.3 when it is pushed OTA. So this brings me to a Clockworkmod question:
If I root phone, install temporary Clockworkmod to do the whole nandroid backup and everything. Since i will have a temp Clockworkmod, when the 4.0.3 update is pushed, will I be able to simply reboot my phone so that my rooted stock OS would first recover a stock recovery then apply update with successful installation? Could it be that easy? Or even to just reboot once i create a backup so my stock recovery detects the OTA?
I understand that the update would unroot my phone, however what i am getting at is whether i should wait for the 4.0.3 update to be released so then i could root and install Clockworkmod and all that, or does it really matter if what i described above will work?
Thanks of the help. Please provide as much detail as possible. As you can see I am newb.
i have a question to add to this. I have the perm clockwork recovery and i want to undo that so i can get the update when i comes out but i dont know how to do that without going completly back to factory conditions.
Maybe a noobish question, but im sorry
As the title says : if i root the phone, will i be able to recieve updates OTA ?
edit : and same question : if i get cwr (for nandroid backups) will i be able to recieve OTA updates?
Thanks guys
So long as you're running the stock rom, you should still get OTA updates. They may or may not break root, but you'll have to risk that. If you're running a custom ROM, then you probably will not get OTA updates, but you can of course update your ROM as per the developer builds.
You will remove root if you install an OTA, and I have heard of people actually bricking their phones installing an OTA with root.
installing CWM will break OTA even if you're on the stock ROM because it flashes in stock recovery, not CWM.
...and from the mixed responses you can tell that it wasn't really a noob question. (all answers were partially correct, btw).
The update will still get pushed to your phone, based on the build version of your phone. The custom recovery will fail to install, at which point you can simply install it yourself by performing a manual flash via recovery.
Depending on the extent of the update, you may or may not lose root, and possibly even your custom recovery. Your best option is to manually flash an update, then the su.zip, and I've also put together flashable a script to prevent your custom recovery from reverting to stock at your next boot (I'll post it when I get chance). Flash all the files while in CWM, and you're golden!
I have reached maximum thanks-per-day, otherwise i would give a thanks to all of you..
So, i still have few questions :
1) If i root, get custom CWM, but stock rom, will i still be able to SEE ota update, and to DL it over the OTA (not flash it)?
2) Can i brick my device with flashing ota , while rooted and with custom CWM ?
Thanks in advance
-yes it will still show up.
-it won't brick your device, but the update will fail, and you'll have to pull battery to gay back into the os.

Hi,
So I have a GSM HTC One M8 that is rooted and running a custom rom and recovery.
Due to the 4.4.3 update, I need to update my firmware. From what I have read in the forums, I first had to go back to the stock rom and recovery. Which I did. The nandroid back up process went fine, but the stock recovery wouldn't load up for me. And also, the stock rom is already at the latest 4.4.3!
When I tried to go to settings and check for updates, it says that I already have the latest version installed....
Few questions.
1. Do I need a stock recovery to be able to get the OTA update?
2. Is this the only way to update my firmware?
BTW, my device is S-ON and Unlocked.
This is a public service announcement to save people headaches. RTFM. You cannot ever now, or in the past, take an OTA with a custom recovery. You must always have a stock recovery and system to do so. Period. If you do install a custom recovery, freeze the update center with Titanium, Rom Toolbox, or the like, so that you will remember you have a custom recovery and not accidentally take an update.
I hope this helps someone out there
So what is the simplest way to update to the OTA firmware with a phone that is rooted with twrp, and a custom ROM? Is there a way to disable twrp without having to un-root? That way it might be possible to update to the OTA firmware. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

.this is referring to stock software updates, unless it's updates of the rom, which you won't even receive if you're on a custom rom...to update a custom rom, you just download the updated version, or the OTA if the rom is so capable, and flash it in twrp like the first version you downloaded

Wait for a flashable zip for TWRP. You can revert to stock to take an OTA. Being rooted is not a problem per se, it's the custom recovery and having non stock roms. In theory you could flash the stock recovery and bootloader and then take an OTA. However, not having stock system/apps could likely create havoc
