Hi All,
I just finished rooting my new Tab 12.2 and was wondering if anyone has successfully overclocked their Exynos and what speeds they have reached. I find the Tab somewhat laggy e.g. browser and screen mirroring and was really hoping to improve its performance. If you did, what app did you use and what speeds have you reached?
Cheers!
Guess there isn't an answer to this yet as I haven't found much on this either

Very sad state of development for the Tab 12.2 and apparently the Note 12.2. I wonder if it is because of the Exynos instead of the QC. Anyone else hear of anything? I would really like to juice up my processor for every last bit of speed possible.

Yea been reading something about it being much harder to do things for the Exynos processors so it's taking a while. I have seen more custom stuff for the note than the tab though. The tab only has around 3 custom roms 2 of which are stockish and one cm 11 of I remember correctly. I'm trying to figure out why but have come out empty handed. If I could get the power supply replaced in my computer I would be able to get a deeper look but for now all I can do is try to find info lol

You're absolutely correct about the Exynos processor is causing some issues. However, Shaheer's 12.2 port of crpalmer's cm11-picasso-WiFi is moving forward, check the list of working/non-working in post #51. FYI, the picasso version (10.1") have more or less everything straightened out, why I guess a fully working cm11 for the SM-T900 is not far off.
There is also the LibidinosoSC kernel for the T520 10.1" TouchWiz ROM, that unit has the same specs, except for the screen-size, as the T900, why a port might be feasible.

If it is possible for the 10.1, it should be portable for the 12.2.
I've actually been watching that rom since the very first test for it popped up. I'm really excited about it but at the same time I would like to do stock with bloat removed and ability to overclock the processor. I like using the side sync with my note 3 but come to think of it, I get my calls through hangouts and my texts so yea maybe I'll do the jump soon once a few more kinks are worked out.

I'm pretty disappointed with the Tab 3. Seems very slow/laggy. In addition, there is zero development on XDA for the tab 3. I know this just came out in the US, but it has been out for months worldwide. I've had this tablet for a couple weeks, so it's not just a first impression at this point.....
Currently, very unstable root and recovery. No custom roms. No way to install scripts/intd.
I've had a Galaxy 3 phone for about a year and love it. My phone runs circles around the Tab 3 in terms of responsiveness, processing......pretty much everything actually.
Am I getting a unique experience with my Tab or is everyone noticing the slow, dragging, instability of this tab? Size and screen are great, but do not outweigh the performance issues in my book.
Anyone else returned/exchanged their Tab 3? If so, what did you return it for? Thinking about going w/ the new Nexus 7, but there are a lot of options out there....please help!!!!!!
Weird. I had the nexus 7 2, the note 8, and now the tab 3 8. I don't think the tab is slow at all. Granted I don't play games, but overall I think its quite responsive and solid all around.
But I've seen a few complaints about how awful it is so it seems people have vastly different experiences.
Did it get slower over time? What are you doing when it lags? Did you install a ton of weird stuff?

Not at all. I don't play games on it or anything that requires heavy cpu usage. Just basic navigation is very slow. Is your tab rooted?

Yeah I wish I could return mine at this point the asus memo 7 hd seems like a much better choice for 50 less than this thing.

I owned a Nexus-7 2013.. Took it back on the 15th day.. (Walmart) They're a lot of issues going on with the N7.. GPS being the main one.. And there are some bad ones out in the field.. So be warned. I was lucky and got a good one, but it just did not justify the price (32 Gb) $294.00 out the door.. for the size of the Tablet for me.. I also own an iPad Mini.. and the 7" Screen of the N7 just was not cutting it for me after being exposed to the 8" 4:3 Screen of the iPad Mini for the last year or so.. The N7 just seem too small.. lots of development for it.. but for me they were the same ROMs I was running on my recently sold Galaxy Note.. so they were Quite Boring and offered nothing new. Then I spotted this Tablet and the Beautiful Saturated Colors and it's 8" Screen won me over on 1st sight.. You got a bad Tablet.. You should just do a Factory Reset Wipe everything and go back to how the Tablet was when it came out of the box. if it's still laggy.. Return it and try another Tab 3 8.0 or something else. Mine was fast out of the box .. is now rooted and still smokes.. have you tried a different launcher? have you gone into developer options and adjusted your animations for faster response...?

I think this is about the Tab 3 "8.0" but you are correct... the Asus would be a better choice when comparing to the Tab 3 7.0.. IMO..
Sell what you got for $150.00... Then buy the Asus.
You are still cutting someone a deal if your unit is still in "Like New" Condition..
Speed
Mine is rooted and still is quite responsive.
Speed wise it was not as fast as the Note 8.0 but it is only dual core!
Ran Antutu on Note 8.0 and tab 3 before buying tab 3 8.0
note was 16,000 and tab 12,000
Where as my mtk6569 Note 5.5' clone came in at 16,138.
my old mtk6575 was around 9,000 from memory. But it has gone to the gods RIP.

This is potentially misleading. It's the same clock rate processor. For many tasks the Tab 8 is just as fast as the Note 8. Exactly the same speed.
Where a quad core will shine over a dual core is when you're trying to do lots of stuff at once. The main area I noticed a difference is something like loading a huge web page and trying to scroll while it's still loading. Lots of stuff happening at the same time there so more processors makes a clear difference.
But for basic, one at a time tasks where there's not much parallelism to be found, there isn't much noticeable performance difference.
I don't know if the '8 is that much different, but my tab 3 10.1 is among the speediest i' ve ever used(tablets)

Hi guys,
I have completely ditched Samsung after letting me down with the first Galaxy Note.
They did not open source their drivers at the time of ICS. So the devs could not get project butter to run.
So we were stuck with using Samsung roms if you wanted any buttery smoothness.
It has been a long time and I have only used Nexus devices since.
How is Samsung doing now?
Did they come around? Are they open sourcing their drivers?
Is the CM team for example going to be able to fully support the Note 10.1 Exynos processor?
Cheers,
Daan

Is your Note 3 supported by AOSP rom makers?
I didn't find the butter back then. My Huawei Pad had less free ram, in order to buffer more screen contents, methinks, but nothing got smoother.
But I should have considered the situation on the Note about custom roms, before buying one.
Will take a look, for academic reasons, whether Experia Tablet Z owners have custom roms, that was number two on my list, and cheaper.
This is currently the best tablet on the market. Why cripple it with an AOSP ROM? Is there something I'm missing here?

Well, I hate touchwiz with a burning passion. I'd much rather it be closer to stock Android. The pen should still work, as it works with the Note 3, so you won't loose any functionality.

Cripple it? No, you will improve the device and any of the functionality that you think you are losing is equaled or improved on with other apps once you are rooted.
My S4 is significantly better after installing Kit Kat vs. Touchwiz. I am undecided on rooting my tab 10.1 2014 due to some security requirements.

That's the thing... you will waste so much time trying to get back the functionality the tablet already has out of the box that it's not worth it. I have CM 11 on my S3 becuase is makes more sense on a phone, but on this tablet with the features it offers you're just wasting the potential of this device. When I pay $600 for something I want everything working and working correctly (excluding some of the S-features) sounds like a Nexus 10 would have been a better fit for you.

I got tired of waiting for the Nexus 10 2. It was my first choice of tablet with the rumored specs. In favor of the Note 2014 - it is on the market now, it was a price I was happy with and it has an SD slot which the Nexus would not. Plus if you want a 10" tablet it is really the only Android option right now. Is it perfect or my ideal tablet? No, clearly not.
Also to your point concerning price. I am with you - the tablet is not worth $600 to me. However I picked up the 32gb version through the Groupon deal. For $420 I think I am satisfied enough to keep it (still making that determination). Or at least I do not regret spending the money.
I am not a big gamer nor am I trying to do any coding on the tablet but to me the Note 2014 comes pretty close to being a laptop replacement. It is not all the way there but I can now travel, attend meetings, etc. without feeling too handicapped if I do not have my laptop with me.
What little I have read on the subject it sounds like rooting this tablet is pretty easy and then just a couple of apps to expand the stock functionality. Hell, I will probably spend more time trying to setup the tablet the way I want through Touchwiz, Nova, or another launcher than if I simply rooted it.

You are right it would be problem solved. Unfortunately I need an "unmolested" tablet for some of the networks/systems I connect to. A rooted tablet will trip security warnings and will be blocked.
Guys, guys, guys! This thread was marked as a [Q]!
It has gone completely off topic.
Those with S4's, S3's and newer Notes, how is your experience with AOSP roms?
Is it easy for open source devs to develop for them?
It doesn't matter who likes what, or why you can't root because of security issues.
The question is: will it be easy to develop non touchwiz Roms.

The answer will be no. The device is very expense and will not get much support in general. Also there seems to very little supoort for the Note 3 with the Exynos Octa. As others have stated I do not see the reason for wanting AOSP on a Note device. You will lose almost all support for the pen and pen specific apps since the cost is so high for the device it seems a waste to not use the pen.

There is an LTE, it's the SM-T325. And acording to official pictures it clearly has an earpiece loudspeaker at the Top. However, in some articles I keep reading does not make GSM calls while on others, yes. The LTE is SnapDragon 800, not Samsung Exynos.. so I am assuming should absolutely make calls. Here is picture..

I have the 4G/LTE SM-T325 and I can confirm that it makes voice calls. I previously owned the Galaxy Note 8.0 GT-N5100, which also made voice calls. I just swapped the SIM card and everything was good to go. I live in the US and I am on AT&T's GSM network.
Now if someone will just create some ROMs for it....

Ohhhhhhh cool, thanks for the confirmation. Like you I also have the Galaxy Note 8.0 GT-N5100.
Keep in mind that the new 8.4 was recently released. ROMs will be available later as more users have it. But now that it can be rooted I can buy one.. I think there is also a working recovery for it.. right?.. these are the 2 most important tools. With these you can delete all the garbage and bloatware you want and modify system and framework apks (.. if U know how to do it). Later, there will be ROMs for it.. give it a little time
Just to confirm with you, the 8.4 is leaps better and faster then the 8.0, right?

Qualitatively it seems faster, but I think a more optimized ROM/kernel will provide even more improvement over the GT-N5100. I was using the X-Note ROM on my GT-N5100, and I was very happy with the speed. The SM-T325 seems a little faster, but not by leaps and bounds. I am currently using Smart Launcher on the device. The biggest improvement is in the display, and it seems like I am getting better battery life than I did with the GT-N5100 after a few charging cycles. Attached is a screenshot of my battery usage from today. I spent a lot of time on Reddit!
Edit: I rooted the tablet using Chainfire's method, and my apps are able to write to the SD card using SDFix. I had no problem rooting the device, but I couldn't get the TWRP 2.7 recovery to install properly. I don't know if there is a problem with TWRP compatibility on the SM-T325 vs. the SM-T320, but for some reason I couldn't get it to work. I didn't try ClockworkMod. Since there aren't really any custom mods/ROMs I can install right now, I just reflashed the stock recovery and decided to wait.

Thanks for the feedback. You are right, the speed improvements from device to device are in fact minimal.. it's all about the software. And 4 cores is useless.. not to mention 8 or 16 cores and I hear some Chinese phones will feature to be released soon.. these people are all out of their minds.. 2 cores running faster will give you a much faster UI experience than 4 cores or more running slower, even if the official benchmarks say otherwise. User experience and benchmarks (most of which the manufacturers fake) are different things. Samsung software and launchers are deplorable.. an aftermarket launcher and a good cleanup of all the useless system garbage will make the hardware run twice as fast and the battery last substantially longer.. my opinion is Android OS becomes bigger, fatter, slower and more complex and less "open source" with each release and the hardware can't keep up with the baggage. KitKat is bigger than Windows XP ever was and some of the apps also bigger and use more RAM than Windows apps. On a phone?? Do I find this normal? No. For me, my Galaxy Tab 7 (the original, and I still have it) running 2.3 Gingerbread, was the Golden age of Android.. from Honeycomb forward is all downhill..
The fact that my phone's CPU has more cores than my laptop, needs more RAM than my laptop and uses an OS bigger than my laptop, tells me clearly we are going the wrong way with this. I am already over Android as I have been with Windows for years. It's time something new comes up again from scratch.. simple, lean, free, open and fast.
I understand they're running the same hardware but with kitkat, I am generally unsatisfied with the note 10.1 even after running clean rom and nova launcher. I'm using a note 3 and it is insanely fast, I really don't understand why the 10.1 cannot run at the same pace.

I tested both devices.... and both are running really smooth..... I stayed with the note 10.1 .. and its awesome.... I debloated the stock rom... running energy saving mode all the time and have no lags delay whats so ever.....
The new note has abit less battery life than the old one... and the note 12.2 Has about the same as the old note...
Just to be clear youre talking about the note 2014? Since i can confirm that it really runs as fast as the note 12.2.....
Maybe you should revert back to stock rom..... customs roms are not always the way to go..... in my oppinion they are pretty useless if you have a device that has the latest firmware and stuff.... maybe take a look at what task are running at the background ... and disable any unneccary stuff with titanium.... it feels to me youre talking about the old note 10.1 2012..... or maybe you are just running a bad browser app or smth and wonder why your device is slow ... shoutout to firefox app .... maybe u can give more details about whats up
Greetings
Yes note 3 is fast ... note 10.1 Has less specs,.. but you dont really notice much difference in terms of speed... for normal usage.... dont know if youre running some kind of graphical things...

Well I picked up a Note 12.2 (black/32GB) Friday and well have some mixed feelings considering the cost.
1. Need to root for more multiwindow apps
2. Chrome performance is still lacking - Googles fault, not Samsung's but figured raw performance would address it.
3. Really hate the physical home button and cap buttons more then I even thought I would. Why Samsung thinks this is a good idea beats me!
4. Really don't like that everything is scaled up in size for the larger screen. I realize it's the same resolution as my Nexus 10 but a DPI setting would have addressed this. Just makes it feel cheap and like it's for old people or kids. Need to root to change DPI...
5. Seems Samsung took big step backwards on some S Pen apps. The demos I watch for the previous Note devices work much better and more streamlined then on the Note 12.2. Really not sold on the S Pen and think mine is going back for a Tab Pro 12.2 if it's released soon otherwise maybe just a outright return.
6. Seems really stupid they hide the menu button under the multitask button (long press). I know many apps have a menu button but for those that do not this could really throw off a person who is not resourceful. This is the kind of crap that backs up the idea that an iPad is easier to use.
7. Definitely some random lag. Why does Samsung need to over bloat everything. stock Android fits in like 300MB and TW Android is like 8GB!
8. Very limited development activity!
I probably have more to say just not coming to mind yet. If I keep it I simply have to root in order to address the DPI and multi-window apps. It's an expensive device to give up warranty on... Only on day 3, we'll see how the next few go...

Hello,
I'm thinking about buying a Tab S 10.5 to replace my HP Touchpad.
I recently got a brand new Galaxy S4 phone and was kind of disappointed with the lack of ROM options and that I am limited to using Safestrap as a recovery. Are there similar limitations with the Tab S 10.5 if I were to buy a new one today?
How would you guys compare the 10.5 Tab S to the new Nexus tablet?
Thanks,
ClockerXP
The tab s is different from the nexus is the screen. The tab s has an amoled screen which is way better than nexus. Well if you get the WiFi version of the tab s... We have a cm11 ROM, bliss stalk ROM based on cm11 and a few stock debloated ROMs. We also have one kernel for the tab s 10.5. We also have twrp, and philz recovery. The limitations of this tablet is that we get slight lag in apps like chrome. But battery life on this tablet is awesome and even better with a custom kernel. I once got 9 hours screen on time of watching movies with a custom kernel tweak for battery savings. The tab s should last 8 or 7 hours screen on time.
Another limitation is development. There are more developers on nexus tablets vs samsung tablets. We don't know if anymore developers buy this tablet. But if your happy with cm11 then we have it and most things work.
Another bad thing is touchwiz. Samsung put their own skin into most tablets like these and takes for ever for us to get an update. Touchwiz also lags too.
I'm not looking to have a ton of rom options but would like to have CM available for a while and a nice stock debloated one available. Specifically lollipop versions. Do you think I'll be disappointed?
Thanks,
CxP
Probably not for the tab s. The nexus 9 already has lollipop and a ton more ROMs. I'm not sure if the nexus 9 has cm12 yet. Best to check there first For the tab s were gonna have to wait a bit for a staple cm and lollipop build.

Yeah lollipop will come! Most likely a developer will make a stock debloated ROM when it comes out.
I actually bought both to compare side by side. I will be honest, the SAMOLED screen is eye-popping. By default the color calibration is set to oversaturate a bit. That said, the SAMOLED even in basic mode still blows the nexus 9's screen away. And then there's the better resolution. However, I prefer the Nexus 9's aspect ratio. I do more browsing than video watching on my tablet and 4:3 is perfect for this. Also, nexus 9 is buttery smooth, even on stock. The speakers are also way better.
So it comes down to this: what do you plan on doing with your tablet? Videos = Tab S. Hands down. Browsing/reading = Nexus 9, so much more comfortable and literally ZERO lag. Games... Either one, though that Kepler GPU is awesome.\
I'm obviously sticking with the Nexus 9 and returning the Tab, though I know that I will really miss that screen sometimes.
The micro SD slot is important to me. I'm glad I went to the store to try them out because now I think I am going to go with the Tab S 8.4. The 10.5 just seems too big and I don't like the position of the home button on the long end of the screen. The 8.4 is great in the hand as well.
Thanks guys... I think I'm going to watch for a good deal on a Tab S 8.4.
