[Q] Gets Hot, only when playing game. is it normal? - G3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I started to play kritika and real racing 3. My new G3 gets to 104 degree F when i play kritika for 10 min, but the temp is only between 90- 95 , when not playing any game. i had the phone for 3 days. never had the dim down or auto switch off issues, only this heat. is it normal?? mine is LG G3 D851.

It's normal :good:

coincidentally, the battery inside the G3 says to not let it get hotter than 104F

The game can utilize CPU to the maximum so the unit can get very hot.

Nice, considering the ambient temperature here can reach 120 degrees on a daily basis...
Sent from my LG G3

Today it reached 106 in 7min when playing kritika(heavy graphical game), heats up slowly when playing clash of clan.
Do you think I should replace my device with my carrier?

YES
O yes...playing games with heavy graphics or watch movies for a long period can heat it up pretty quick ...I personally take the case off when playing to help it stay a little cooler, and if i am home i take the back of as well, since i have heard cases of damage from over heating. :good:

I was typing the Battery temp as 104 and 106. cpu is at 120 - 150F

It's the same with every phone I used for the last 2 years. Plastic, glass or metal, the phone still gets hot.

if I buy a case and use it. would it cause more heat to be contained? or would it release more heat out? planning to buy a rubber case

How Hot is Too Hot???

Pretty much what the title says. I just downloaded Modern Combat 4 & I have been playing it a little bit. I'm on CM10 w/ Ktoonsez's kernel w/ it underclocked a pretty good bit. While I was playing the game my phone got really hot! I had my max at 1.5 gigahertz & my voltage at that frequency is 1065 mv. I was reaching temps of 106° & 107°. I quit playing for a while & let it cool down b/c I didn't wanna mess anything up. How hot can I run my phone before damaging something? Sorry post was so long.

If you are talking 106F or 107F, that seems to be around normal temperature. That's what I've been reading in the forums while researching my own heat issues. My phone gets that hot, around 45c just using chrome and instagram to look at pics. And the back gets really warm, I'm guessing it's because of the thin plastic battery cover Samsung uses. I was thinking about returning mine, I just got it last week, but I guess this is a normal thing. Plus I'm stock with JB update through Kies.
106 107 temperature is normal. I have seen my phone get to 120 before when it was running a bunch of things at once. My phone is normally around 85 - 90 degrees when idle. I wouldn't worry about it until it get to 115 120 I would think.

Ok. Thanks to you two. Like I said, I am undervolted also. I have never seen these temps since I undervolted. I guess I won't worry about it too much. By the way, check out the new Modern Combat 4. It's pretty good!

OG Pro Heating and Screen Dimming

How hot does the OG Pro get? What is the maximum brightness you can set it to when the phone is at its hottest?
I've seen a Youtube video wherein a guy was playing a game for just 1 minute or so when brightness dropped significantly. That was for the Korean version though.
It drops to 76% at its "hottest" which is really just lukewarm heh. The only time it happens to me is when I'm outside in the sun (I live in orlando fl mind u). But honestly I leave it on auto at 50% and even in the fl sun I can see the screen perfectly...

LG PRO go or NO!!!!!
I would be very cautious of purchasing a phone with overheat issues, such as the LG G Pro. I had the privilege of owning and I have extensively tested the Galaxy 4, HTC one, and LG PRO. The LG model was the only phone that had overheated warnings and disabled brightness. I was in a well vented air conditioned building while testing. I am not stating all LG models will be the same. I will say look closely at how many people have had the device shut down or give warnings and it even happened during a CNET review. The LG phone is a great phone, just dont feel like you have to buy a device just because. I am pretty sure better models that don't over heat as often will soon be released.
Since the SGS4, HTC One and OG Pro all use Snapdragon 600, if OG Pro is the only one that "overheated", maybe it's safe to assume that a software update can fix this.
I chalk up any overheating issues to a bad phone. There have been reports of the S4 overheating and while I had mine it never did that and my OG Pro hasn't either so far. Its a mini computer so anything can happen.
I just played with a display model in the AT&T store. The phone was shut off and I used it heavily for about 30 mins running a combination of GLBench, Youtube video, Google+ browsing... The screen dimmed to 92% after running GLBench Egypt 4 times in a row and that wasnt such a big deal.. The worst offender was Youtube while watching video. I watched a video for just a couple mins and the display dropped to 84% and at that point I was really noticing how dark certain colors were looking, like greens and blues. The G Pro is such a gorgeous phone and I really want to pick this up but im worried about this display issue. A 16% display brightness drop while in an air conditioned building after a few mins of watching a video is a problem!
I can only hope for a software update to help this... Otherwise I may join the GN2 bandwagon.

No it is not. It's not a problem of the phone.
Would you mind watching this video?
How many models of top '13year smartphones do you know which allow you keep 100% brightness over prolonged period of time been well under heavy load (gaming, benching) at the same time?
The HTC One has autobrightness feature which silently lowers brightness w/o even notifying you about it. The SGS4 as you've seen, notifies you about the brightness level has been decreased and cannot be raised to full

Well like I said I keep mine at 50% and can use it in full daylight. Ive gotten it to warm up a little but that was stressing it by playing dungeon hunter 4 over 4g and in the 90 degree florida sun. And even after like 2 hrs it only dropped to 76%. That just what I experienced...

You can go to the hidden menu and disable the temp throtle. And the screen will be at 100% regardless of temp. But do it under your own risk. I actually got a higher score in antutu by doing it. But for normal use i keep it on. Only for games i disable the temp throtle. Theres a thread on how to do it somewhere in here.
If you don't find then: Open system menu by dialing 3845#*980#, go down the list, find items "High temperature property OFF" and "Thermal mitigation daemon OFF", check them both to Enabled ON & presto...with thermal mitigation daemon disabled you can achieve as high as 24700 in Antutu and the screen would not dim in hot conditions anymore.
Under your own risk. There's a reason why LG make this.

there aren't "overheating" issues. phones are computers and computers get hot, and phones can get hotter than most think is normal when they are actually just at normal operating temperatures. i have a nexus 4 and i have read about others getting their phone up to 90 degrees Celsius before it shut itself down because of the possible battery damage at this high of temps (this was when they were testing to see how hot it can get). even though my nexus feels hot the most mine has gotten to is about 50 degrees celsius which is well within the normal cpu range. now, hot batteries are a different issue, but the plastic in the ogpro is able to distribute the heat away from the battery, so the phone getting pretty hot is not an issue. i mean, obviously if your phone is getting up to 90 C then that could be overheating, but it doesnt sound like anyone has really gotten above 55 C which is perfectly normal and wont damage your phone even though it feels hot. if your worried about your phone getting hot then you can download "CPU+Temp V2" from the play store (its a widget) to see how hot your phone actually is. if you dont like the dimming screen then you can always disable it, but i dont think it is a big deal that it does it because i keep my phone brightness below 75 anyway.
stop worrying about your phone getting warm and just use it!

Mine gets E980 get mildly hot just like the Note II but the S4 gets so hot that it starts to lag trust met thats why i switched it for this one
I was having some high heat issues but did a soft reset and it seams to have fixed it... not to mention I have more free RAM and battery life improved a little...
The soft reset consists of removing the battery while the device is on and leaving it out four about 2 minutes. Then reinstall battery and turn on & presto problem solved at least for me.

The thermal throttling/shut off starts at 50C (122F) while the phones are able to go up to 55C (132F). Editing the thermald.conf fixes the throttling / shutdowns.

My phone gets quite hot when just browsing and also when it reboots is this normal?

read me!
A genuine unbiased reply, cuz I have G Pro, S4 and 808!
G Pro is a beautiful butterfly!
Though It has some heating issues. The maximum brightness you can set at the "hottest" is 76%, while is 24% less than the max, anything above 30% would be excellent for indoors, believe me!(you will get habitual to it soon, its good for eyes and affects battery performance too!)
I have GT Racing 2 and Asphalt Airborne. While playing with brightness under ~60, phone doesn't heats up!
It does so only when the load is much, and the screen is above ~75!
(save for 60-75, its a no mans land.. lol )
In a (very)bright sunny day, you will have to use 100%, else 50% will do!
ONE REAL BATTERY KILLER IS IR-EMITTER!
Newbies usually blame huge 1080p screen for eating battery, but in this phone, the IR-remote(app/hardware, idc) is the real problem!
To save battery, avoid using remote, and disable Quickset SetUp and Quickset SDK in Setting>Apps>Inbuilt!
Else everything is fine!
FOR NEWBIES,
As far as 3rd party software support is concerned, I haven't seen any proper ROM other than CM 10.2!
For me, LG UI is better than TouchWiz!
Its Lite(Technically)
it has got themes(icons+widgets), animation effects for home screen, lock screen effects, dual-layout icon set launcher(these are main things most people need a custom launcher for)
Its fast(faster than S4-S600 and equivalent to Note 3-S800 for me!)
I love this phone!
Literally, NOT BIASED!
I MAINTAIN MY PHONE MEMORY(RAM) AND KEEP PURGING MY EXTRA TEMPORARY FILES
MAY BE THATS WHY MINE IS FASTER THAN YOURS!
NO OFFENSE TO ANYONE

Any more ques about this phone?
PM me!
Press thanks if this helps!

How hot does your OG PRO GET?

I'm trying to figure out if the heat levels I'm getting are the norm...after heavy gaming like, arcane legends I'm usually around 115°F...
Is that excessively high or about the average for gamming???
OG PRO
Does your screen dim when you reach that temperature level?
A little, at around 110°F-115°F it might drop from 100% to about 85 or 90%...

What app are you guys using to get your temps. Does it give core or gpu or battery temperature? Thanks in advance
So I played avengers for about 45 minutes, all I could take of it lol. my temp got up to 94º F in antutu temp monitor and very quickly returned to normal afterwards. The case was slightly warm but not uncomfortable. I have a screen protector but no case atm (in the mail). Not sure how much that will affect temperatures. So 94 is not uncommon after gaming on phones. Quad Core control was disabled in battery settings when I played as well. And the room temp is around 71. I was not charging while playing. I suspect that would raise temps a lot as this phones rapid charge creates heat. What were your conditions while your temp was so high?

------Reply to Your Inquiry-------
Dear Eric,
Thank you for contacting LG Electronics US. I will gladly assist you.
While browsing and gaming your battery life will be drained faster and will need to demand more energy from the device which is usual since a mobile device is not built in with a fan to cool the internal hardware and processor. In these cases you must remove the battery and leave it out for a couple of seconds however these overheating issues will still be concerning you as I stated this will happen when the device needs more energy for certain functions as the ones previously mentioned.
If you do have concerns you are able to send your device in for repair and only pay for shipment. We will inspect the device and repair it free of charge if it is covered by the warranty.
I hope this information is helpful, please do not hesitate to contact us back if you have any other inquiry. I will gladly assist you. Please enjoy the rest of the day and I wish you the best!
Respectfully,
Aimee H.

If the back cover gets out of shape or anything, then take it back. Until then, enjoy your Tablet!
Not sure why it gets too hot, mine is the samrle. I still have my 3 y/o gtab 7.7 dual core and it never get too warm for COC. Battery drain on that tablet is minimal as well, feels like you're just browsing, then our quadcore tab S drains too much juice when playing coc
I would put GSam Battery Monitor on your tablet, and set the battery temp alarm to say 50c and then game for a while, if the alarm goes off straight away, them raise the temp to 60c so on, the point of this is for you to know when you should give your tablet a rest to let it cool down before it starts it cause damage.
Below is an link to the free version, you set the alarm temp in the settings , the full version is only approx $2.40
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gsamlabs.bbm&hl=en
EDIT: I think i will email GSam and ask for them to include an cpu temp alarm, just done it
John.
yah it will get pretty warm/hot to the touch.
I always keep mine in normal power saving mode, seems to help with heat and still run very well.
Sounds like a good idea, though i am not much of a tablet gamer, I prefer my notebook.

dont worry at all mate , after all there are 8 cores inside that beast your holding and its a electronic device what else could come out of it when your pushing it except heat the heat is normal all you have to keep in mind is not to play with your tablet while its on charge , cuz heat can kill your battery and lower it life spin , so keep it as cool as you can while its charging mate

One plus 3 heating/warming even after replacement like the old one! is it normal?

when using wifi/4g in my house, i watched video, browsed fb and even shared internet and all. below i'll give my observations:
in wifi:
watching video, fb and browsing, whatsappin: the phone get very very slightly warm like not warm just the bit different from the phones usual temp like it hovers around 33-34.
when gaming in wifi it goes arounf 36-39 (NOVA 3) battery never crossed 31..
4g in my house, battery arounf 32-33, temperature around 37-39 for all.
but when i step out of my house, like when i'm operating my mobile in train/bus and the ambient temperature varies from say 28-32, my phone gets considerably hot and today, i was travelling in Bus and the ambient temp was around 35 and i was just browsing , watching videos and fb, my phone became hot like it even would have touched 43-46! i felt it hot to touch, is this norma(it's making me extremely paranoid)l!!??? if this is the case what happens if it's summer here, the phone would become blazingly hot, coz in summer ambient temp would be around 36-44 and all!!
Is this normala or am i unlucky for the second time ? I'm getting paranoid!
Just hit them back up

Are you serious.... When the ambient temp is 35 degree what else would you expect... Every phone on the planet will get that temperature. Can't believe you had a phone returned for this. You know the front of the device is black and absorbs light... When the sun hits your phone it's gonna heat up also. This phone is the best Android phone when it comes to thermal throttling.

With heavy multitasking, I hit 60+. Not regularly, but it has happened. The temperatures you're hitting are normal for me. I've had zero issues with the device. I have an OtterBox case, so I don't feel the heat as much. Honestly, I barely even notice heat at those temperatures. Considering the fact that the body of the device is aluminum, it's going to easily get hot to the touch.
Also, my One would almost always run between 45-70, and I've had that since launch. Used it heavily daily for years, and I still use it regularly as an app development device. No issues.
These devices have extremely powerful processors. They get hot. There's not an easy, efficient, way to cool a processor in a device like this yet, but they're designed for heavy use, so I wouldn't worry about it.

Hi first of all thanks for the reply.. I'll tell you what really made me paranoid.. Every evening I travel in bus and train and the ambient temperature would be from27-28_29.. I use 4g jio.. I just browsw/fb/insta.. In minutes my phone near the earpiece on the screen gets warmed up and it'd go around 40-41. Then I lock it it cools down fast but when I unlock it in seconds again starts warming up... My friend using same 4g in moto g4plus but his screen is cooler than mine... Please my one last doubt...
This is nothing lol. I live in Scotland so just now ambient temperature range from 5-13 °c and in my house 21-23°c and my Z3+ hits 60-70°c easily on heavy use. Benchmarked it one day and hit 90°c. The joys of the 810 chipset. Anyway away to upgrade to the OP3T so i should see and feel a massive difference.

Thank you all!
Hey all thank you guys very much for replying to my thread! i'm really feeling okay instead of getting paranoid with my phone.. although i'd be very happy if you guys just clear me this last doubt!
today I was playing NOVA 3 connected to wifi in an ambient temperature of 25C, 5-10mins into gaming, CPU reaCHED A MAX OF 41c and at around 20 it maintaining at 43 but jumping sometimes 45.. this is gaming, but i get the same temperature just browsing in knda same ambient temp while I'm travelling. and also browsing in wifi/4g(fb,insta,chrome) in my house in ambient 25-27 gets the phone phone to 35-37... and the rest of the pat of the mobile is cool, even the back side is normal, only the small portion between the earpiece..
why is this happening? is this normal(it'd be great if you guys clear this)? if yup y so? and why phones like oneplus x and moto g4 etc have relatively less temp than OP3..
I know it'd be irritating to answer kinda same question again, but this would my help paranoiac freaking out for my mobile will go down..

Because the Oneplus 3 is a lot faster, the Temps you are giving are n even close to hot... This has been one of the cooler phones so far.
Like others said, those temps are completely normal. Hell, I'd even expect them to be higher with your fairly high ambient temps.
About comparison with other phones - it all depends on internals and design. OP3 is made of aluminum so it'll dissipate more heat into the case - you'll feel it better. Other mentioned phones are plastic, so they'll contain more heat inside (you'll not feel so much heat, but the cpu may even run hotter).
And OP3 has cpu located just below the camera, so it's normal that it reaches top temps in that upper center part of the device.
P.S.: You talked about loads and ambient temps, but didn't mention screen brightness - that also plays a massive role in running temperatures.

for me mostly brightness bar will be in the middle... i never use it with high brightness..
Just get a case and maybe a screen protector so that you can't feel it getting hot.

Are you serious.... When the ambient temp is 35 degree what else would you expect... Every phone on the planet will get that temperature. Can't believe you had a phone returned for this. You know the front of the device is black and absorbs light... When the sun hits your phone it's gonna heat up also. This phone is the best Android phone when it comes to thermal throttling.

hey ya !! sorry to disturb you again and again.. just a urios doubt.. what'd be the temperature of the phone or how hot can it gets, when u use 4g and fb app in ambient temperature of 29C and 33C..
mine got arounf 38-41 for the 1st cse and around 43 for the second case..
I know i'm being paranoid, ,but please, clearing tis would help stop worrying a bit
All the temps you posted are normal
About Moto g, it has much weaker SoC. A Ferrari's engine gets much more hotter than a toy car. Doesn't mean there is anything wrong with Ferrari
4G /3G active usage can get hotter than gaming. That's also normal

Nothing much to worry here. Even I use Jio all the time. My OP3 get a lot hotter than any other device I use before. Reasons I knew are these.
1. OP3 rock with a high end processor. Say SD 820. Other phones you mentioned are consisting of relatively lower end processor. So internally they might heat up more that OP3 while doing high processor intensive tasks, but the plastic casing keep the heat inside, as OP3 is made up of Aluminum that being a metal heats up so quickly and and u feel more hotter in hands than the other ones and also it cools faster.
2. AFAIK the processor is situated just below the Camera bump. Hence it heats up very quickly at that area. Irrespective of outside temperature.
3.While using 4G network it's obvious that the phonehave to communicate with the network at a very high rate than 2G or WiFi. So it's clear that it will heat up. Also using high processor intensive application like Facebook gives the processor high stress and it heats up in no time.
Remedies
1. Use a case. That somewhat helps in insulating the heat.
2.If possible use WiFi rather than 4G network. That will considerably helps your battery life.
Conclusion.
Don't worry about the warmth of the phone. Its normal. Just enjoy using the phone.
Never Settle.
Cheers.
Clearly never experienced a SD810 device. I'm sure Snapdragon took there name too seriously with that chipset. I could hit HIGH 80°c in seconds playing basic games, using the camera and under heavy usage. Had to tailer my use around my Z3+ but now I have the 3T I can do what I want and it never goes past 50°c so far.
