I was just curious to know if someone else's phone is over heating. Yesterday I was watching a boxing match on youtube with 4G on and it reached to a scary 121°. 4 hours later I was playing the nova demo with the screen at 45% brightness, played for like 20 minutes or so and it reached 112°. Just whanted to figure out if this is normal that personallyI think is not, and also if someone else it's experiencing the same issue. Thanks
Edit: Both of times I was indoorsjust in case someone is wondering.

Mine can get much hotter than that but it pretty much hovers around the 120 range when I'm browsing the web.
I also get this message when charging and watching a video. I need to exchange it. Just need to find a Best Buy store that has one in stock.
What do you use to check the temp?
mine gets real hot as well.. I think it has to do with charging while using though.
Woow thats amazing. Im guessing that those temperatures can be harmful to the phone right?
I use system info from the market to check my phone status very useful

It could be that and the stock charge pushed a lot of power in to charge quicker... But my input is that my phone hasnt even gotten very hot at all..

My phone was just laying in shotgun of my car with the car charger plugged in and the display on, then all of a sudden I picked it up and it was hella hot! 120° read SetCPU and I got shook, ripped the battery out and threw the phone in front of an AC but then I got worried that the extremities could possibly warp the board, so now Im thinking Im going to return my phone! In no way can this be good for the phone, I don't see how it can not get affect it when reaching 120, 130, 140 degrees!!! Im worried that in a week, a month, a year from now something will go terribly wrong and I really don't want to risk it, so I'm real close to returning this phone and just waiting for the Nexus!
I am amazed that a phone getting hot after heavy use is such a surprise to everyone. See any fans? see any ventilation? Here you are using a dual core 1.5 GZ processor, what were you expecting, ice water?
Ahh... Set CPU. So you can't really find the temp until you're rooted?

Who mentioned anything about heavy usage and overclocking? CPU is 1.2Ghz stock buddy and I wasn't doing anything on my phone at the time it overheated...I have a Droid Incredible 2, and I run its CPU OC to 2.035Ghz and its never once gone over 105 degrees, so before you go getting all amazed, get your facts straight!
I have noticed this too.
With the phone simply in my pocket, my leg would feel warm. I could grab the phone and the phone would feel quite hot. Not so hot that it would burn my ear, but warm enough that it would feel like there's some kind of problem. Usually, heat = battery getting drained. When I check to see if there's anything running, there's nothing...
Right now, have been listening to Spotify for over 2 hours, and it's cold as ambient temperature. Will try installing some monitoring program and report if I notice more heat issues. I know the Evo3D used to get "burns my ear" hot when using it as GPS while connected to the car charger. My guess was that if the screen is on, and there's power going to it, it'd always get hot. Maybe it wasn't supposed to and that was just my assumption. However, same thing happens to this one; watching netflix, or playing a game, or anything demanding, and if I'm plugged, it will get really hot, really fast. If not connected, it won't get as hot, but "normally" hot nonetheless.

That you know of, did they ever fix the issue on the Evo3D?
Let me put it another way. I don't see any process or feature that will cool down the phone when in moderate to heavy use. I expect it to get hot. I have always thought, how are they going to disperse the heat?

Mine got hot on day 1 from youtube and general setup but after a full nights charge it has been great for 2 full days, no heating up or anything weird.
But man did it get hot!
Edit: I turned off gps the night this happened. I have been using my phone alot and have not experienced this again.
You need a dose of Penicillin and Cortizone. The burning sensations should clear up. In the mean time, stay away from strange phones and turn off the vibration loop - LOL
Sorry, but I've done quite a bit with my phone (videos, NetFlix, etc...) and it doesn't get warm enough to burn.
An Intel CPU (i7, for example) can run at 200 degrees Fahreneheit. In fact, the roof is about 100 degrees Celsius. To protect the CPU, there are heatsinks, fans, water cooling, etc. Video cards can also go up to 70 degrees celsius before showing artifacts; some can do much better.
We're commenting a heat that is not nearly that much for a phone. IF the SOC gets to 100 degrees celsius, that's one thing; 100 degrees fahrenheit...that is the temperature in many places around here.
These SOC don't need such fans, heatsinks, etc, because they're not supposed to reach temps of 200 degrees. They should be self contained.
On my Evo3D, which I passed on to my father, I could smell like something was burning. It wasn't, but it smelled like if it were, around the battery. Yeah, it still gets hot when in use, and specially if connected.
I believe there's also comments that on all new phones, the first few charges, while the battery adapts, the phone may be hot. Of course it had been over 2 months on my Evo3D and it still gets hot.
The E4gT is doing better today, but I haven't thrown any video/games at it yet; nor has it been in my pocket.
I'd say give it a couple days. I know I've reported my own concern, and I'll be checking it to make sure the "hotness" is within reasonable limits.

Often while playing a game, my screen will randomly dim and i will check the brightness option where it warns me of overheating.
The battery temp is only 42C, and the phone isnt very warm, ive felt phones get way hotter.
Whats wrong? is it the phone? or normal? Anything I can do?
Is ur phone overclocked? Playing game does makes the phone really hot even without OC ur cpu.

I'm not speaking for everyone certainly but I have seen 42c while talking on the phone.
It does get a bit warm, but I never get the warning you are speaking of. I am completely stock.
I now haven't gotten to this temperature (close but not as high as 42c) in awhile.
My brightness always dims and gets limited to prevent overheating. My phone has gotten up to 125F while it was charging and I was using it (nothing very intensive though, like playing games or anything like that. Mostly texting, email, XDA) I have even had an overheating warning on the charging animation while ordnance few times too. I'm actually going to bring it in for them to look at. I'm stock kernel and rom(just rooted)
Just in a few minutes my screen has been on it just shot from 89.9F to 98F. And all I did was write this post.

125F is way too high, there's got to be something wrong with the phone. Mine sits at idle around 70F, with heavy use, it never reaches 100F. And I'm overclocked to 1.4GHZ.

Well I undervolted, which doesnt make it run hotter, it'll make it cooler if anything.
I've never understood the logic behind that. A processer uses a certain amount of power, measured in Watts. Watts equals current times voltage. If you lower voltage, current has to increase, and more current equals more heat. Am I missing something?

I believe this is normal as long as you monitor and don't over clock a lot. Eventually that can kill your hardware.

The phone gets really warm on stock. The cpu has a temp control feature that if it gets too hot it will slow down. The cpu is made to work up to really high temperatures so I wouldn't worry too much about it.
If you flash to a custom kernel, they are lowering voltages on some of the frequencies and I am noticing an incredible loss of heat. My phone does not get warm anymore, at least no where near stock.

This. Like faux said some of the chips run the same voltage across many frequencies (in my case 1150mv) I was able to lower them into the 850-1050s which is crazy low. Remember power draw goes up exponentially with voltage change.

Is it possible that the American version (dualcore 2gb ram) doesnt get as hot as the international one (quadcore exynos 1gb ram)?
Mine gets pretty hot as well when i play for long times, i guess the main reason why many people are talking about this is that the Chipsets are located directly at the bottom where you would hold your phone while gaming in portrait mode for example. So you can directly feel it and the heat of your hand further warms the phone My Tegra3 tablet gets pretty hot as well in one spot - where the cpu is, but its not a place you normally place your hands, so you wont even notice that it gets warm.
Same thing was with my previous phone the DesireHD. It never got hot on the places where i held it, so you think it wont heat up at all.
In general though: I have some experience with cpu clocking on PCs and overclocking and stuff. It depends a little on the chipset of course but in general temps like 50-70° C are no problem at all for CPUs.
Workaround on SGSIII: Enable power save mode CPU. It reduces the clock to 1ghz (at least on my rom - stock jelly bean polish release), it still runs most games and UI perfectly smooth in jelly bean but it gets considerably less hot.
if i install many apps at once (testing new roms) my phone gets hot
Hey guys! I've been playing a PSP emulator on my note 3 and it runs pretty hot. I was wondering if anyone had any idea of how hot is too hot for the cpu. The battery stays pretty cool so I'm not worried about the battery temp, only the cpu. Thanks in advance!

The phones have a thermal throttle, so you should be fine unless you adjusted the throttle. In that case you should already know what's safe and not. And just an fyi, 100 degrees f is not hot for a cpu. Just when you feel something warm to the touch, that item is already at about 100 degrees f.
Thanks for your replies guys I really appreciate it!

Do you mean 90 C? Because I expect 90F ambient temperature whole summer and the phone has to be at least that much, even when shutdown. Add a little bit sun exposure and it can easily hit 120-130F without doing anything and I'm not talking Death Valley, Phoenix or Vegas, up there with outside temperatures hovering around 110 F or more, unless you don't come out from AC cooled room at all whole summer, the phone will be hot. If I remember correctly my computer CPU would start throttling somewhere around 80C, but my computer's GPU could go close to 100C. I would think phone is similar, except without active cooling, it probably starts to throttle sooner.
I use Battery Monitor Pro, and it keeps track of daily temps for the week. My lowest is 97.2F, and highest is 104.2F. It gets hottest playing games, but nothing so hot that I have to stop. As previously said the phone has a built in throttle. You can even know when it kicks in as the screen will dim a bit even if you don't have automatic brightness on.
EDIT - And by lowest of 97.2F I mean that is the highest for the day it recorded, not the lowest my phone runs at. Sitting idle with the screen off it's around 86F right now. I've seen it as low as 76F.
My droid incredible would hit 118F on a regular basis. My GN3 so far has stayed below 95F. Live in Phoenix, but it it's just now starting to warm up.

Is Touchwiz DVFS what controls the throttling?
Hi,
I'm using a Canadian Galaxy S4, SGH-I337M.
Rooted, running on Liquidsmooth 4.4.4 ROM. Also has Ktoonsez kernel. It is currently undervolted+underclock a bit, and is stable (I could overclock it, but I don't. No need).
Been wondering for a long time about the operating CPU temperatures of the Galaxy S4... Never had the possibility to do testing with CPU temperatures before. I do have a LG P500 that I have overclocked a ton in the past, still work just fine, but the LG P500 is old and do not support viewing CPU temperature, so it's my first time experimenting with that.
How hot would be too hot for this phone? There are several opinions, but never figured out if I... "minimize" the risks of my actual temperatures, for some reason. My laptop CPU throttle at 85 celcius for instance. While it's a phone, it's completely different.
At night, while connected to charger, it would be pretty cool, at 25-30 degrees when I wake up;
I would say that most of the time, my CPU is running at 50 celsius, and rarely ever exceed 65-70 under normal use, or even gaming. Plus, the CPU is undervolted and a bit underclock, so I do feel like it run cooler than usual.
Quoting Meowmix from Rogers forums:
It varies on the usage of everyone else & how you handle the phone ( cases & such). Also if you are in extreme heat or having the device in direct sunlight.

So, the case does matter? I do have that Otterbox case which is pretty tight and enclose the phone pretty well, I would believe that the phone would get less.. air.. but I mean, it's just a case, didn't thought it would affect much..?
Quoting Ahmed from AndroidCentral Forums, I would say that I have a quite similar situation.
No, just when i ran AnTutu when it runs the 4 cores at the maximum frequency the temperature is between 80-91c, and at normal use while surfing the internet the temp. 45-55c and the battery reaches 38c after an hour of continuous using.
Click to collapse
I CAN reach 80-90 celsius, but only if I really want it to happen. 38 celsius for the battery is also correct, I never exceeded 41 degrees yet, on any Android phone (I don't know the dangerous battery temps.. But when I reach 40 degrees I try to put it down as fast as possible). With benchmarks, usually at the max frequency, or testing my undervolt with Stability Test, I CAN reach 80-90 celsius, which look really high. Additionally, I would remind that I don't overclock, and the CPU is undervolted so seems a bit cooler.
So on AndroidCentral, this is the reply Ahmed got, from "CR6" user:
I had to use my temp converter to look up & convert them to Fahrenheit. 80-91c equates to 176-195 Fahrenheit and that's extremely dangerous. These temps will not only physically burn you, but will fry your phone if you continue using it at these temperatures. 45-55c equates to 113-131 degrees Fahrenheit, and that is normal under really heavy usage. Optimally, you'd like to keep it at 38-45c. You may have a defective device if you regularly see temps over 80c and I would advise checking on a replacement.
Click to collapse
THAT dangerous? Well, I don't phisically feel the heat - I do feel it, but since I have that phone case, that doesn't hurt at all. But like I mentionned, I never reach 80 celcius or more unless doing benchmarks. Usually I never exceed 65-70. But still it left me wondering - Why does Android allow such high temperatures in first place? Isn't the system suppose to shut down at some point in case of danger, and when?
I've also experimented with thermal throttling in the Ktoonsez kernel, and the throttling values of the ROMs. Touchwiz Stock ROM with DVFS disabled, seems to throttle at 80 celsius, look decent. Liquidsmooth AOSP ROM, stock kernel, does not seem to throttle at all (Huh)! Once, and that was exceptionnal, I've reached 100 CELSIUS using Wifi, connect to a charger after like 2 hours, room temperature was very warm, was not surprised, but when I noticed I reached 100 CELSISUS, I was WOAW, I should shut down. I did reached 100 degrees again, using Stability Test at max frequency after a few minutes. Needless to say I manually stopped the test, because I had no idea how much heat the phone could handle...
So been aware of this, "Ktweaker" app, for the Ktoonsez kernel I use now, does have a thermal throttling option, but I wondering which thermal value should I enter for best "performance"? Default was 70 degrees, I set mine at 80, I've heard of people even putting 90 for the same kernel. Besides, maybe I worry about it too much, because in no way the phone should exceed 70 degrees celcius under normal use anyway, or even gaming. Only way to reach insane temperatures would be benchmarking/stress testing...
Still, first time seeing these CPU temperatures also. I've overclocked my LG P500 several times in the past, dealing sometimes with random reboot, so make stability/overheating questionnable, but the device did not supported seeing the actual CPU temp. So I don't know which temperatures would be considered normal - probably, nothing above 75-80, correct (For the Galaxy S4, actually)?

At which point is the device supposed to shut down? Is that in the kernel or a hardware CPU trigger? Because heck, I've reached 100 degrees 2 times, I mean, how far/close was I from a shut down? I'm quite surprised.
I've also read of people complaining of S4 overheating, especially maybe after it was released - It's possible that it heats up more than other phones, but honnestly I have no idea.
Thanks for your answer =)

Thank you for your answer;
Used to think some temps look normal to me - Besides, since I've undervolted last week, it's stable and run cooler, maybe better battery as well. I never can exceed 70 degrees even when gaming I supose..
I can reach 80 degrees, but only when benchmarking or stability testing, so I'm not worried, but I do wonder;
I've reached 100 degrees 2 times, once while doing a stability test at 1,89 GHz for like 5 minutes (or more), I had to manually stop. And last time was long ago, watched YouTube videos in bed, like under covers ha, maybe as well connected to charger. Not even surprised I've reach such temps after a while in such conditions, under covers, just no air (Used to do it with my LG P500 too. While I never was able to see the CPU temps on this device. Even then, LG P500 still works, but guessing build quality was much better). Needless to say I was like WOAW when I've noticed 100 degrees, and just put the phone down. Probably went from 80 to 100 quickly, didn't noticed that fast. But yeah, that 100 degrees was.. almost expected under such conditions.
I just really wonder about thermal throttling. Like I've mentionned, stock Touchwiz with DVSF disabled seems to throttle at 80, while KTweaker app for a different AOSP kernel have the default temp limit set to 70. Liquidsmooth ROM, AOSP, does not seem to have a throttling point, since I've reached 100 degrees 2 times with it (Don't intend to test 100 degrees again, huh). What would be the maximum ideal temp for throttling? Maybe I think about it too much, since under normal circumstances, I never exceed 70 degrees, besides benchmarks.
Also wondered at which temp is the phone supposed to shut down... 120 degrees?! XD Because 100 seems ridiculous to me, probably is, but yeah, my laptop throttle at 85, and it's a laptop (Intel Core i3) - Can't imagine a phone going any higher without any risk.
Thanks for the feedback
