[Q] About installing a custom ROM.. Where to start? - Galaxy Note 8.0 (Tablet) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooti

I'm on stock JB 4.2.2, rooted...
Galaxy Note 8.0 N5110
Since Kitkat was released, I've been afraid of upgrading!
I read about KNOX and not being able to root if you upgrade to KK via OTA!
Now I want to install Civato's custom ROM&Kernel... I don't know where to start
Should I start with Kernel or with ROM...
I didn't find any tutorials for Note 8!
I don't know what Bootloader is, and what does Civato means by adding "NO NEED FOR THE KITKAT BOOTLOADER" to the title!
Is this related to going back to JB?!
Any help would be appreciated

First flash kernel, reboot recovery, do the wipes and formats and flash rom.
For this KK Rom you do not need the new bootloader from original Samsung Rom for working WiFi. So no new bootloader and no Knox.

So what is going to change if bootloader is changed?
And will I'm be able to rollback to JB 4.2.2 again?

Once you go 4.4.2 there is no going back, unless you trip the KNOX counter.
I find there is more issues with app compatibility and function than 4.2.2
There are a few who rather not have upgraded but are living with the 4.4.2, as it brings no big change with its update. Though SD card and KNOX can be circumvented by the latest Xposed apps for 4.4.2.

You just didn't see what developers added to our Note 8 after the kitkat update
One of them is the air command, which maybe the most thing I want to get personally
Also I'm facing some problems with JB 4.2.2, I mean mainly the Media drain problem.. I hope it gets fixed with KK
So, simply your answer is NO going back to 4.2.2 after upgrading
Thanks

I am sure by Christmas someone will develop a tool to remove KNOX for customizations. Though you can use the latest SuperSU to hide KNOX if tripped.
I fix my media drain issue by removing Google Play Music, and replacing it with Nokia Music Player, also disabled thumbnail caching in xposed.
I found having over 4,000+ songs with cover art in MP3 Tags a bit of a problem with Google's media operation.
I heard of air command, just don't see it useful for my purposes since I have customized my single page desktop (Home screen), is more like MS windows. Plus the S-pen has its own feature to start one of the most used apps listed in the info bar. Having over 100+ apps and shortcuts at my finger tips, with just two quick taps and no add-on app to hog memory.

Air comand is not available in Stock Samsung 4.4.2 Rom
Yes you can flash older 4.2.x or 4.1.x Rom, but you will have new KK bootloader and Knox still remaining.

how can I upgrade to android 4.3 + mod and disabled KNOX bootloader

Hi evryone,
I would realy like to update my Galaxy Note 2 N7100 international to Android 4.3 but their are some things that needs to done because I want to get rid off the KNOXbootloader and somethings need to be done first.
Firstly, I want to get rid off that Samsung Knox bootloader because I can't root safety with that KNOX bootloader thing.
+
I want to keep download mode and recovery mode.
I don't want a custom rom. I want an official ROM that still can receive official OTA updates and can show by about Divice/ status 'normal'!
Secondly, Their are two mod I realy want because the official update don't get Note 3 functions.
But the first mod talks about deodex and my rom is odexed. And the official update will also be odexed.
Can I still perform this mod? and how? I realy want this new functions so badly. (pen window, air comand, scrapbook, new S Note,...)
The second link is a mod/port for the Galaxy S4. But the Note 2 also works on Android 4.3. Is this mod compatible?
Note3 apps: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2467810
Note 3 camera: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2498390
To keep it short
I want my Note running on the official android 4.3 update without the KNOX bootloader + the Note 3 app port mod that still can receive official OTA updates and won't increase the flash and KNOX counter +Note 3 camera.
How can I do this?
My Note is currently still on 4.1.2 but the update arrives very soon to my country.
My Note is the Samsung Galaxy Note N7100 international (NO brand like AT&T or Voda Phone, just the normal international)

You don't want custom ROM? You want official and then make it custom? If you mod it, it is CUSTOM, not official. Official is only when you flash OFFICAL ROM and then maybee root and install Xposed, anything else you do is CUSTOM.
Not to mention that there already is (are) custom ROM(s) that have everything you want.
And if you MODIFY stock ROM, you just CAN'T HAVE OTAs. I'm not sure you can have OTAs on Samsung even if you're rooted. I can have OTA on Nexus when I'm rooted, but no OTAs even on Nexus which is PURE GOOGLE if you modify ANYTHING in the system....
Basically what you're saying is "I want to have s*x, but I want to remain a virgin"... not possible.

agreed with dalanik.
1.
You want official Android 4.3 without KNOX bootloader ? ==> A : impossible, all the official 4.3 sure come with new bootloader (the current 4.3 released at sammobile). This is what I know. You want without KNOX bootloader ? use the custom ROM, There's 1 UEMK4 Knox free under N7100 Android development.
2.
To be able to receive Samsung's OTA, you will need a normal system status, not modified. In order to get this, you should stay at the official ROM, with a stock kernel, stock recovery, un-rooted. Once you root / change kernel / ROM, your status automatically change to Modified, with a rise in flash counter, and OTA is a no way for you.
3.
If you want a port apps from Note 3 on your Note 2, so far from what I read, it will need a root & CWM/TWRP to flash the mod/ported apps, because it will come in a zip CWM/TWRP flashable file. Or if you want to make it easy, you just flash a custom ROM, but you will need custom recovery (CWM/TWRP), and you can forget about the OTA.
And to make it simple, my friend...
if your phone is N7100, why is there a need for you to receive OTA? There are a lot custom ROM floating around on N7100 android development which you can try to use, compare to the device that I own (N7105).
That's my opinion, you may stick to what you want if you like. :fingers-crossed:
Sent from the corner of this rounded earth.
Well my Galaxy Note II is already rooted and I have already done some mods in the past like hot audio mod and sound+,... I stil can receive OTA updates by using an app called framaroot. I simply tick UNROOT in the app, restart my device and download the OTA update. After the update I reopen framaroot and choose to root again. In download mode everything stays official and my flash counter stays 0.
By official rom, I mean a tandard samsung rom. The standard Samsung rom where I can perform all my mods on and still can official OTA update and if you look in download mode, were's everything said Samsung official and flash counter 0 instead of custom.
By custom roms I mean the Ditto rom, the famous Cyanomogen rom etc.
their was a file to flash with ODIN that disable the KNOX bootloader but it's for a N7100 at&t edition and not for the N7100 international.
oh and an extra Question. Can the pre release version of Sammobile galaxy note 2 N7100 android 4.3 (open Asia )(you know that famous leak from a +-2 months ago)
still can receive OTA updates?

[Q] Safestrap on rooted Sprint Galaxy S3 OTA 4.3 MK3

I've been using a factory ROM Sprint Samsung Galaxy SPH-L710 happily for quite a while. Outside of custom launchers and Widget Locker type stuff I've been trying hard to live [happily] within the factory constraints. Then I discovered Tasker, Daily Roads Voyager, and a bunch of other really fun stuff. And down the rabbit hole I went.
So thus far I've rooted using the excellent Saferoot found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=50744761
Now I want to be able to do nandroid backups so I can capture snapshot-in-time backups of my device. I keep seeing reference for using Snapshot on the Sprint S3 but the only sources I've seen for downloading Safestrap do not specifically reference the Sprint Galaxy S3 so I'm unsure if it's supported or not.

You dont need safestrap on the sprint version of s3 since we dont have locked bootloaders. Its mainly for the variants with locked bootloaders. You can ODIN either TWRP, CWM or Philz.
It was my understanding that the latest OTA 4.3 release specifically locked the bootloader and installed Knox. Which is why I went with Saferoot to begin with.
The firmware only installed KNOX apps and bootloader. SO, you can remove KNOX from the phone but not the bootloader. NEVER try to downgrade the bootloader as you will brick. You are stuck on that bootloader until someone figures something out.
Edit: The bootloader is not locked.

So, the conclusion is there's no work around or tool to allow nandriod backups even after rooting the OTA 4.3 update. No Safestrap viable for this particular device and factory ROM?
You can create backups from CWM, TWRP or Philz at anytime even on 4.3 MK3 without any issues. There is no safestrap for the sprint variant only ATT and Verizon (to my knowledge).
For clarification then the Sprint variant can use odin safely? Are there specific ROMs that are we are limited to? I went the SafeRoot route myself but have been petrified to try anything else because it seems every post I read contradicts the one before it. I downloaded the Online Nandroid Backup app and it seems to be working. I landed here trying to educate myself on SafeStrap. All I want is 4.1.2 back on my phone. This OTA has totally made my once silky smooth handset a laggy battery sucking pos!

I have used ODIN numerous times and have had no issues! You can flash any ROM you wish just dont downgrade the bootloader or you will brick. BTW, 4.3 is silky smooth for me! I have my S3 running at least 24hrs and around 2.5 to 3hrs screen time (moderate to heavy use) per charge.

Thanks. My stock device started freezing up intermittently and randomly locking up and rebooting. Typing is a joke because it will freeze mid sentence and then all the sudden crap out all the keystrokes like it had to stop and think about what it was doing. Also the Google Maps change and YouTube change annoy the hell out of me. Maps will not lock in on GPS unless i pull down the info bar from the top of the screen and toggle the GPS button off and on. Just a major frustration. This is the only phone I've had to date that I had absolutely no complaints about until 4.3. Sorry for the rant but thanks for the info.

I've been perfectly happy with 4.3 and have had no issues, in fact it's made my S3 the first Android phone I haven't specifically hated after using an iPhone for almost 2 years. Everything works great, and it's fast, and I've loaded all sorts of custom launchers and lock screens and now have it rooted and running various Tasker automation. Great stuff. I'm finally sold on Android.
Regarding your random reboots/locks I had a Galaxy S2 with a dying power button switch that used to do that for months before I finally attributed it to the power switch specifically (when it finally died completely I finally realized it was the switch all along). That doesn't explain any other issues you're having, but it's something to consider. If you're rooted you can probably disable the power switch and assign some other hard button to work as the power button for a couple days as a test.
Good luck.
Thanks for the insight. I don't think it's hardware related since it was never an issue before the OTA but I am willing to try anything and will try it if I ever get the SuperSU to keep from randomly stopping.

I really need some help here. I'm looking to switch to the s3 but all this talk of knox and stuff is really turning me away from it because rooting and using custom roms are a big thing to me, i just need a device that can support it well. So what exactly do you mean when you say downgrade the bootloader? and would i be able to flash roms that run kitkat? or would i have to update my device to kitkat and root while running 4.4?

This is what I would do if you dont have 4.4:
1 Odin the official stock ND8
2 Flash TWRP 2.6.3.0
3 Go to the dev thread and folow the direction in OP and flash Wicked X 7.3 (custom 4.4) & thank bilgerryan
If you have 4.4 then proceed with 2 & 3!
You will then have a custom 4.4 rom on your S3!

[Q] Unable to flash custom roms

I'm unsure of what exactly is causing the problem but My T-Mo Galaxy Note 3(SM-900t. Hltetmo) is unable to successfully flash any custom roms. It's running the official 4.4.2 kitkat as well as the bootloader installed from kies 3. Currenty I have a beta version of twrp installed that works with the 4.4 bootloader and I've tried a few different roms with varying issues. Is it just not possible to flash custom roms on this official bootloader currently?
The roms I've tried flashing to name two are Tweaked and W03's Slim. I've only done clean installs and even cleaned out all of the SD card / internal before attempting but the roms either won't boot, and the phone just heats up or loop endlessly. I made a nandroid backup of my stock rooted which I have no problem going back to after each unsuccessful attempt but I've yet to figure out why. If anyone has any tips or advice it's much appreciated.

Tweaked is 4.3 the ROMs are not interchangable
TWEAKED 2.0 ELEMENT V3.0 NOTE 3
That would definitely explain it for tweaked, but Will's seems to be a kitkat 4.4.2 rom. I'm unable to get that one to work either when many seem to have no issue. Due to my post count I'm not able to directly ask in each of their threads so there's it's anything I can do I'm willing. I'll research if it's possible to downgrade back to 4.3 but from what I read already it doesn't look like it.
- Edit
After some research it looks like Will's is modded in some way to have kitkat's version with the 4.3 loader. So that would explain why I'm unable to flash that as well.

It would probably help sort out things a lot better, yeah. Shame.. I didn't think an update could possibly go this bad but lesson learned. If anything.. I've had zero problems with kitkat it actually does run better and smoother but the locked down issues are unacceptable with Knox.

What lock down issue.
TWEAKED 2.0 ELEMENT V3.0 NOTE 3
From what I understand once updated to the official 4.4.2 kitkat the updated bootloader in 4.4 makes it so you can't downgrade. It's much more locked down compared to the official 4.3 JB. As such I'm stuck on 4.4. From my research there's only one model of the note 3 that can downgrade and it's the W8 model.

Samsung Galaxy S4 (T-Mobile) - Android 4.4.4 Bootloader Restriction?

Hey,
If I understand correctly, if the Samsung Galaxy S4 (SGH-M919) is updated to either: Android 4.3.X or Android 4.4.X; then a restriction is added to the bootloader - preventing the flashing of older stock roms such as Android 4.2.2 (M919UVUAMDL). Is that correct?
In addition, what would I need to do in order to remove this bootloader restriction, so that my SGH-M919 (on 4.4.4 - M919UVUFNK2) would then allow a successful flash to an older stock rom such as Android 4.2.2 (M919UVUAMDL)?
For reference, I have listed the details of my phone below:
Brand/Series/Make: Samsung Galaxy S4
Model Number: SGH-M919
Carrier (Country): T-Mobile (USA)
Android Version: Android 4.4.4
Baseband Version (Firmware/ROM): M919UVUFNK2
Phone Rooted Before?: No
Also for reference, I've listed all the various SGH-M919 stock firmwares/roms:
4.4.4 (2014 December) - M919UVUFNK2
4.4.4 (2014 September) - M919UVUFNH7
4.4.2 (2014 March) - M919UVUFNB4
4.3.0 (2013 November) - M919UVUEMK2
4.2.2 (2013 April) - M919UVUAMDL

What your looking for doesn't exist, mainly because developers and tech geeks are always developing for the future or what's ahead.
So do the apps and programs, they make changes for what's ahead, not for what passed.
For that reason no one has taken the time to find this "way back machine".
It's like buying a new led tv and trying to convert it to crt tube.
Like removing the electronic ignition on your new car and installing points and condenser.
Like ripping the guts out of your side by side fridge and putting blocks of ice in it.
Do you know what I mean.

I understand the point. However, I do believe there is a way to essentially downgrade from Android 4.4.4 (SGH-M919: M919UVUFNK2) to Android 4.2.2 (SGH-M919: M919UVUAMDL); since I have seen guides on how to do it (links listed below)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2258628
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2336392
http://www.theandroidsoul.com/downg...-sgh-m919-android-4-2-2-jelly-bean-back-stock
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KUebfbEn5HU [<-- 4.4.2 to 4.3.0]
although it's ambiguous if this can be done from Android 4.4.4 (M919UVUFNK2).
Perhaps there is a method of accomplishing this indirectly maybe not through removing the bootloader restriction directly, but instead getting around it on the SGH-M919? I have listed below some of the ideas I have read online, and would like some feedback to be provided on indicating which would be viable for allowing the downgrade?
Ideas:
-Flashing the bootloader itself?
-Using a custom recovery?
-Using a custom kernel?
-Disabling/Removing Samsung KNOX? (Perhaps in doing so, the bootloader restriction may also be disabled?)
-Root Android 4.4.4 (SGH-M919: M919UVUFNK2) first to gain Root access, and then use Root access to increase the permission level needed to override the bootloader restriction?
-Install a custom Android 4.4.4 rom/firmware which unlocks the bootloader as part of its' installation, and then try flashing to Android 4.2.2 (M919UVUAMDL) when on the installed custom rom?
I'm sure given how many custom roms, custom recoveries, and custom kernels, and many other modifications developed for the SGH-M919 on Android 4.4.4 that the ability to flash - either directly/indirectly - from Android 4.4.4 (SGH-M919: M919UVUFNK2) to Android 4.2.2 (SGH-M919: M919UVUAMDL) should be feasible - any ideas?

Ok.

Once you have a Knox bootloader, you can only load a newer version. That's what Knox and Samsung did to enhance security for the BYOD corporate systems. Once you have a Knox bootloader, you'll always have a Knox bootloader.
However, if the reason you want to run a MDL bootloader is to SIM unlock, it's not the bootloader, but the kernel that will enable the service menus. Search for MDL kernel, or other threads.
BTW, the newer modems rely on the newer bootloaders.

The reason I would like to downgrade from Android 4.4.4 (M919UVUFNK2) to Android 4.2.2 (M919UVUAMDL) is to be able to run apps from the Google Play Store that are only compatible with Android 4.2.2. Would changing the kernel allow me to run apps from the Google Play Store that are only compatible with Android 4.2.2? And run these Android 4.2.2 apps with full compatibility?

What apps would these be?

I'd be interested in knowing which apps those are. That's a pretty small market share to only allow it to run on 4.2.2

Not sure how hard you looked, since there is a whole thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2780006
Start reading at the top, I think you'll find very interesting info about post #13.
Or, if the phone is paid for, T-Mobile is now required by law (as of Feb 11)to give you the unlock codes. Just call 611 on your phone and talk to a rep.

In my experience, I can go back and forward between knox bootloaders on my M919, at the expense of flash counts, but never tried returning to a pre-knox bootloader.

Need advice n7105 strange knox bootloop with every rom but 4.1.2 stock after cm10.1

Hello,
I'm a noob but usually try to fix this kind of issues on my own, looking at the boards, following tutorials, learning, but this time I think I'm not able to find a solution on my own so I'm asking for advice here.
Some time ago I installed cyanogenmod 10.1 on my Note 2 LTE and was happy with it for some month, than last week I tried to upgrade to cm12.1 It worked but there where some issues and bugs, mainly I wasn't able to swap internal/external sd cards.
So I decided to go back to latest available stock rom 4.4.2 from sammobile.
Here is where the problem starts. The stock 4.4.2 resulter in a bootloop, tried cache/dalvik/factory reset, flash again, whipe again.. nothing.
The phone is not able to get past the white label "Samsung Note 2 gt-n7105" screen. It goes black than the white label again and again.
It doesn't even get to the Samsung animated logo.
Ok bottloop, no problem, try to flash again something else.
I tried different Custom roms, different kernels, different flashing methods. I can flash anything with no problem but every time a get a bootloop.
During the various attempts knox fired, but I don't care. I don't know if this could be the cause.
Actually the only firmware that works is the original oldest STOCK 4.1.2, every other stock firmware past that or any custom rom is bootlooping the same way. To fix I only can reinstall stock 4.1.2 with odin.
I really need any advice or hint.
At the moment my goal is to get at least to stock 4.3 but I cant.........
Thanks!
When you first bought your phone, did it come with Knox?

nope it doesn't existed before, but now I can see it when I boot in download mode "knox warranty void:1"
Try to get the latest firmware available via kies ,that worked for me

From what you've described, I think the Stock ROM 4.4.2 from Sammobile contained a bootloader update. So when you flashed this ROM, it updated your bootloader from the non-Knox version to the Knox version.
I am very unfamiliar with the technical details of Knox, but I think the new Knox bootloader is causing your bootloop problem.
However, I don't know why 4.1.2 works when everything else doesn't work!
Can you check the Stock ROM 4.4.2, and see whether it really contains a bootloader update?

Since a boot.img is present, it means that it would flash your boot partition. So now we know for sure that when you attempted to flash the Stock ROM 4.4.2, your bootloader was changed to the Knox version.
So the lesson here is: before you flash anything via ODIN, always check to see if there is a bootloader update. Usually you don't want to be changing the bootloader on your phone.
***
So now there are 2 possible ways to reach your goal:
1) Keep your new bootloader and see whether you can get Stock 4.3 or Stock 4.4.2 running on your phone
2) Try to restore your old bootloader
As I said earlier, I'm not familiar with the technical details of Knox, so I'm not sure how to get Stock 4.3 or Stock 4.4.2 running on your phone when your Knox indicator is already 0x1. You need someone else to help you.
And you can only restore your old bootloader if you happen to have made a copy of your boot partition before you flashed the Stock ROM 4.4.2. Even if you did have a copy of your original boot partition, I'm not confident with helping you to restore your old bootloader. You need someone else to help you in this case too.
Conclusion: I don't think I can help you to solve your problem I'm sorry. Hopefully someone else who is more of a pro than me will come along to help you out.
Good luck!
