Hello.
Does anyone know how do you remove locked apn settings.
I've upgraded my phone to a different firmwared and now i have two locked apn settins. one is not a problems since i can deactivated it and create my own.
The problem is one that says hotspot and it's set to be used as a modem. Well my carrier doesn't like modem connections only allows me to tether using a specific apn, if i connect through modem they charge me sepratelly
Regarding this anyone know how to removed locked apn settings? Rooted here! that or making sure the internet wifi sharing (hotspot) is not using that APN
Thanks.
J.
Using root explorer navigate to
Data/data/com.android.providers.telphony/databases/telephony/carriers and you can delete the record for the apn you don't want. Usually you can unlock it by changing a 1 to a 0 but lg doesn't seem to use that same layout

Yeah i discovered last night that i can delete them using a sqlite editor. but how stupid is this? who the hell locks apns? if I was not rooted my phone wouldn't work since my carrier changed apn settings recently.

my folder tree stops at
Data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases
Perhaps it is different on Lollipop?
In Data/data/com.android.providers.telphony/databases, I found not a folder but a database called telephony.db. I opened that with SQlite and inside that was a table called carriers. In SQlite under data I then saw a list of various carriers, but actually not the APN I currently use nor the default one of my carrier, so nothing to delete.
For now I have followed advice from http://forums.androidcentral.com/lg-g3/461488-lg-g3-apn-reverts-default-after-every-restart-can-t-seem-change-apn.html and changed my alternative APN type to "default" so that hopefully the phone does not revert back to the locked APN of my carrier with its high data charges.

Hi everyone,
I just rooted my phone using mrRobinsons No-Counter-Tipping method (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1771687). I still can't seem to DELETE the stock T-Mobile APN, and I need to delete to get on SIMPLE MOBILE's data network.
Please help me if you know how to do this. Thanks.
I may be wrong, but I don't think you would need to delete it. I believe that you would have the option to select T- Mobile or Simple Mobile. Check the Simple Mobile box and you should be good to go. Hopefully this helps you. I'm not 100% sure since I've never had to switch carriers or APN's.

On(in) the apn screen, hit menu, add apn, fill in the blanks (I don't use Simple Mobile so I do not know the correct settings) and then save (or, menu> save) and when back at the apn screen tap the radio button next to Simple Mobile.

Thanks for the reply everyone, but on my HD2 I did add the SIMPLE Mobile APN WITHOUT deleting the T-mobile one, and it didn't connect to the 3g/4g network. Once I deleted the T-Mobile APN (as the instructions say to do per Simple Mobiles website) it worked fine.
Now that I'm using my S3, I tried just adding Simple Mobile, and that Does NOT work. I recently found an app that allowed me to change/delete the T-Mobile APN (APN Manager), but maybe that didn't complete delete it, otherwise something else isn't working correctly.
Is there anybody that is using SIMPLE Mobile on their Galaxy S3 (T999)????????

I just did it this morning. Added the new APN then selected the radio button (to the right of the name of the APN in the list). I was getting an average of 15 Mbps down.
My phone is unlocked, but it's never been a problem with any Android phone I've used.

Your phone is SIM Unlocked? Is it Rooted? I'm just trying to get my setting working, and stock (out of the box), the settings for SIMPLE Mobile didn't work (I restarted and everything just as the instructions say). The T-Mobile APN was still there.
Please let me know exactly what you did so that I can try and make it work for me. Thanks.
EDIT: One other thing. I have the $40 SIMPLE Mobile Plan (which was working fine on my HD2) with unlimited 3g data. What plan do you have? Do you think that would affect it?
im pretty sure u need to go to mobile networks/network operators/default setup and choose manual before attemtping to do your add apn.

I think this may have done the trick. I also think the connection is acting differently since I'm on this phone (with this stock ROM) compared to my HD2 (with CM9 ROM created by Tytung). So deleting the APN made it find the SIMPLE Mobile network, where manually setting this one made it so I didn't need to delete the APN.
Thanks.
Closely related issue - Please Help!
Your issue is closely related to something I'm trying to do, but unsuccessfully. I also have a T-Mobile andriod phone (galaxy) and I've recently switched to Net10 Wireless. The service is excellent and everything works great on the data side. However, I can't delete the T-Mobile APN and it keeps switching back to it randomly even though I've selected the radio box next to Net10's APN. It will work for period of time and then stop and I'll go back in to the APN settings, and sure enough, it has switched back to T-Mobile. It doesn't give me an option to delete this APN, only the one I added.
Any thoughts anyone?
Thank you!
Amber

I have a pantech pocket that I just got and I am using it on my new unlock straight talk plan...I am very technology challenged when it comes to this stuff. The pamplet that came with my new micro sim card for straight talk said that I need to change the APN settings and it lists what I need to put in it's place. However, whenever I go into "mobile networks" and try to change my APN settings, I can't. They are shaded and when I touch them they don't react at all. I can't change them at all! So, how would I go about choosing manual in the default setup? I am sorry...I just don't know where I would even find any of that at. Super confused

I don't know if anyone will ever read this, but simple trick:
You're right in that when you just add a Custom APN and select it (on any phone I've had), it won't remember your selection. It'll either keep selecting the Default APN, or neither.
What's always worked for me, is to create a 2nd one and name it "DONT USE" or "Dummy APN" and "Save" it (Menu).
Then create a 3rd one and set that one up the way you want/need and Save it, then select it.
Let the phone run for a minute and make sure your Mobile Data works (go to Google.com). Then Reboot and wait until it finishes booting up (2-3 minutes from when you see the Home Screen) and then go check it and your Custom APN should be selected.
Your Carrier may have instructed you to Delete the original one, but it can't be done from the phone's APN screen anyway. They never bothered trying it, trust me.

Hi there, I have an issue with the APN setting
I bought the phone and it was locked on Rogers. I was able to unlock and my sim card worked no problem. I was able to get calls and receive calls as well. Then I tried to see if Data worked, not working at all. So I went to mobile settings and setup the APN settings. The thing is the apn settings programmed on the phone is for rogers. when I do mine, I need to be on a MNC of 370. as soon as I change the mnc setting to any other value other than 720, when I save, the setting disappears. I thought of installing a custom rom instead.
I installed the rom SERENITY v1.1 with no problems (Love the rom). when installing the rom, I just did a wipe data, didn't clear cache (since the guide didn't tell me to do so)
Now when I try to set the APN of my carrier (chatr Wireless in canada) it just doesn't work.
I believe it's because the MNC needs to be set to 370 and my phone is stuck on 720. When I try to change the MNC and save, The apn setting disappears (like many previous posts I saw).
is there a way to fix it?
I went into the /etc/apn xml file and the provider is in that list... but it still doesn't work. and also when I try to reset default apn... it doesn't show me any, all blank list.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Are you able to just input a new apn and leave the other alone?

I tried that too. and No, as soon as I put MNC other than 720, the setting disappear after I hit Save.
That's weird maybe try getting another sim card, my s3 was a Rogers phone that I unlocked and put on Virgin but I think my apn settings are embedded in the sim card

I'll do that first thing tomorrow. Thanks

Hi, i'm with the same problem. Change the sim works to you? Thx
Am I blind or did they vanish? I go to SETTINGS --> MORE --> MOBILE NETWORKS, and I have 4 options... Data Enabled, Data Roaming, Network Mode, and System Select. Isn't this where one previously would have found APN settings? Are they somewhere else now? I've searched like hell and haven't found any mention of them being moved.
Aren't APN's a GSM thing? I'm not sure if you'll see that on a VZW CDMA device. On that screen on my GSM phone I also have Access Point Names

Well that would explain it. Why am I thinking you had to add APN info for MMS on a Verizon device though? Perhaps I'm confusing myself.

Open Voice Dialer and say "open apn settings" and bam, your in. And us CDMA users do have and use these settings for adding MMS settings if necessary.

Another VZW GNexer here. I absolutely cannot send MMS any more. Tried using voice to access the old apn settings menu, no luck. I can manually go into /system/etc/apns-conf.xml or /system/build.prop without issue and can access all apn-related text, but am not quite sure how to go about tackling the problem from there (wouldn't want to change the wrong setting).
I've done a bit of searching, and haven't quite found a solution that works for me on 4.2.1...
***Update***
Turns out, the issue was related to Handcent. No apn editing required. Go figure...

by the way im on sprint using cm10.1

My phone doesnt take a sim
This was easily done on Sprint with the note 8 and s8 with Quick short cut maker app and editing LATE APN settings by adding the value DUN. It would essentially allow you to by pass the 10 gig 4g limit on your hotspot plan by tricking the carrier into thinking your using the phone for normal usage. Is there a way to do this on Verizon? Quick short cut maker doesn't work on Verizon, when I inserted the Sim it must of locked the APN settings when I converted over from Sprint.
bump, this would be extremely useful for us who tether if anyone has an answer/idea. I've experimented with VPN and have been unsuccessful in circumventing throttle.
Any luck with this?

I am interested in this too. Although I am running a mxpe, I have tried several things including the net.tether.noprovisioning=true edit to build.prop, the global dun=0 through adb shell, VPN's, and FoxFi. Nothing has worked as of lately. FoxFi had been working up until about 2 months ago, but apparently Verizon changed something and that no longer works (according to the folks at PDA Net). The only other thing I can think of is changing APN settings. It appears I can easily change these in my mxpe, but does anyone know which APN is used for tethering and which is used for normal phone usage? Does Verizon even use different APN's for the purpose of tracking tethering usage?
So I just got the phone yesterday, and I noticed that data on it didn't work, but calling and texting did. My data plan is under Rogers, so I went to a Rogers Wireless store, and they couldn't make data work, as it apparently couldn't connect to their APN. I was wondering if this was a software issue, where it wouldn't accept an APN from any service provider, or if the phone just doesn't work with Roger's data specifically?
Also, if anyone in BC has gotten the data working on their Red Magic 5G, how did you do that, and what's your service provider?
Try again. Im on Videotron in Quebec, took me several tries to finally to get to save the apn. Roaming data for Videotron is on Rogers network. Tested and working in Ontario.
Although, carriers in BC might use other lte bands. ?
Working without any hassle or need to setup the APN configuration with Public Mobile on their LTE network.
There were some mentioning the APN setup page isn't clear, especially is you're using dark mode.
Rogers APN settings should be readily available so you can edit/input yourself.
Edit: found this:

You need to use an app called MyNewAPN to add the APN settings. For whatever reason you can't do it through the APN menu.
