I don't know if anyone knows of a way, or not as the case may be, to access the laser autofocus sensor for use in developing an app.
I'm personally assuming that the sensor records distance data in order to change the focus of the camera. I want to be able to access that distance data for use in a Range Finder app. Any help in this would be greatly appreciated! And if this isn't in the right forum, do let me know

PS: I tried the autofocus laser...
and i find it really strange...
The first time i tried it without covering the laser sensor, and i got a fast and precise focus.
Then the second time i tried to cover (with a finger) the autofocus sensor and i still got a fast and precise focus...
(the test was done on a low light ambient)
Can someone explain this?

The camera falls back on software in situations where the laser can't get an accurate reading similar to how the S5 and all other phones focus normally. It's possible that our wasn't using the laser for this reason when you tested it even though its on.

Hope I can link it
That's the vid.
Never seen that LED before... From what I know its not meant to have a LED there.

Looks like an IR-LED which might be the proximity sensor.
Edit: Tested it and the CM3602 proximity sensor reacts within 2 cm above the IR-LED.
It looks like the proximity sensor. Get another camera phone and have a look at your DHD from the other camera while making a call. The IR led will switch on.

Ahh that'd make sense. Most digital cameras shift the colour of IR to visible spectrum. It's always fun showing this on laptops of unsuspecting people.

It's the proximity sensor. Cameras can pick up light into the IR wavelengths, which are not visible to the naked eye.
Point your camera at the end of your TV remote and press a couple of channel buttons... See it light up!
If you have some exposed photographic film, cut a couple of pieces just larger than your camera lens, turn one 90 degrees to the other and tape them over your camera lens. It won't pick up visible light, but it'll still catch Infra-red. Instant night-vision camera! Requires IR light to work, obviously
my prefered method to test tv remotes (or the batteries in it )

Haha thank you all!

Use the hardware camera button to help it focus.
i tried that this evening actually while trying to make videos and it was just brutal.. i tried both touching the screen to auto-focus and half pressing the camera button... wasn't getting much response either way.. if at all...granted the lighting was low.. but still... it was almost giving me motion sickness trying to watch the camera track and not actually focus.... felt like i was on a moving boat... and i had the phone positioned on my knee while sitting down to make it as stable as possible while not on a tripod. hope this gets worked out a bit better with the next release

Hmm I haven't had an issue with it once I used the hardware button. I have had it not autofocus before by touching the screen or just waiting for it to autofocus but the hardware button always did it quicker.
Sadly many of the reviews about the ion's camera mentioned about the slow focusing and from what I remember, I don't think the phone supports the touch a specific area to focus feature that other phones have

It actually does. Under capture method, there's a touch capture. There's also a touch focus feature

by slow autofocus, I meant while taking video...

Some have said "Change the ISO to 200"
HTC said "Go to settings / apps / camera / delete data" .. it actually seemed to make at least a little difference.
I put a new ROM on there with Android 4.3 and it seemed improved but still had the coloring issue you showed.
It seems like software could fix it, but it's hard to tell. Why are HTC replacing some of these if it can be fixed with software?

I understand people like taking photos of all kinds of stuff but why even bother taking a picture from 200 feet away in a dark room? Even if the colors looked better it seems like such a pointless photo. To each their own I guess.

Took that specifically for this post.
Almost seems that zooming in takes care of the lighting, but obviously then more pixelated.
Why is it a circle pattern too? I'm tempted to pull out the lens cover to see any different.
Was this an issue with original 4.2.1 release on other carriers?
Is this an issue on Google Play Edition?

Your doing it wrong.
These were taken at the Volbeat concert last week.

its too dark and you are too far away. Maybe the lumia 1020 could handle that, but I doubt anything else would get a decent picture.
You could try my olympus OM-1 with manual shutter and telefoto lens... Got some great Northern lights shots with 20second shutter.
My point is that it just shouldn't be that grainy. I'm not looking to mount that shot on the wall. My GS3 AOSP would have done a lot better I feel.
Point is, camera sucks in low light. I'm not the only one having the issue.

This times 1000. People's cell phone camera expectations have gotten ridiculous over the last year or so. Want tremendous shots in any lighting situation? Go buy a DSLR, like Dark Jedi said. Simple as that. Not saying you can't be disappointed by how some shots come out, but let's be realistic. It's a cell phone.

Guys, quit flaming the OP. This is a widespread hardware defect on many Ones and there's a huge thread about it in the international forums here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2317507
If your camera shows a bright purple/pink tint in low light, it's defective. HTC is currently trying to pass this off as a software issue and will roll out an update with 4.3 to lock down the ISO and do some color balance tweaking. It'll sort of mask the problem but probably isn't an actual fix. Wait until after the update, and if it still does this (which is more than likely), complain to HTC customer service and they'll probably let you send it in for repair.
Amazing. No flash.
Sent from my HTC6500LVW using xda app-developers app
I think one problem with the OP picture is that from what I can tell, the only lights in the place are those on stage. However, all off those are colored lights. No natural, white light. I think that is one of the biggest reasons for the tint.

Have you tried using HDR or Night mode? HDR is supposedly better for low and high light environments.
Go to the camera image adjustments, and try changing the exposure next time. You are taking a photo in a dark room where the lighting is illuminating only part of the photo. The camera's light sensor can't tell what to do for the light source.

I disagree about the GS3. I had it and it was really not that great. At that distance and low light expect grain and probably some strange colors if you are asking it to recognize strange lighting. Not sure if the purple tint is due to the lighting in the room or some other issue though. Photography is all about light whether you use the camera on the phone or a top of the line DSLR....still about the light. At that distance you are just not getting enough light to the sensor. You could try the max iso setting, but not sure if that would make a difference. Otherwise, you would need to leave your shutter open for longer which in turn would cause shake.
well I think we can say this is a software bug at least and not a physical phone problem.
I *hope*
Well I took a couple of photos at night using different settings. I think the photos came out alight and don't see the complaint some has with the camera.
First one was night mode
Second one was hdr mode
So very useable camera at night just have to take the time to set it up. I am sure I could get better photos if I used the manual settings.
I know anyone who are camera nuts will say auto mode never works right like you think it should. it's just made for people who can't use the individual settings

I've also read in a couple of places that HTC is replacing phones with the issue.
Has anyone had theirs replaced? What was the process? I just hit a Verizon store, and they said they were unaware, and therefore weren't going to be replacing them.
Also, spent a half hour on the phone with HTC, of which they took me through the *yawn* rudimentary steps of clear cache and data on the Camera app, wiping cache from recovery, etc.
They said they will NOT be replacing phones, and I'd have to wait for the 4.3 update, of which the guy "knows for a fact that it will be fixed then"
Oh well..

Anybody having problems with the camera using a BofA app. I'm trying to deposit a check into bank of america and the picture keeps getting rejected! I never had the problem on my bolt.
i have a problem with my G3. when using the camera to take pictures i see that the picture will not focus. only after knocking the top of the phone on a table the focus snaps in to action. has anyone heard ir had that happen to them ?
Get it replaced if possible, you shouldn't have to tap anything for it to focus, something must be loose

I've been using the camera and testing it for the past week. I've noticed that the 4x rarely ever activates and the phone uses the main camera with a digital zoom instead. This is consistent in videos too which defeats the purpose of a telephoto lens. Anyone else with similar experience?
I also noticed this, it has something to do with the focus and the lighting conditions. Try to vary your position/distance and you should be able to easily notice that. The phone decides on its own when the transition to the periscope lens is to be made. So sometimes it works when having 4x zoom, sometimes it only activates with 5x. Sometimes it's even a little bit less than 4x. Hopefully Google will add a manual control button later on.
No matter how good conditions are, the 4X camera lens never gets used in video mode. Anyone else with same?
The way it determines it is based on the focal distance. It's unable to focus below a certain distance so when you are too close to the subject it will zoom further with the regular lens before switching over

The 4x zoom will only activate if you have 30 fps selected and possibly only with 4K, I had the same problem initially. Definitely should not be this way though.

That must be why all of those reviews were shot in 4k30. I kept seeing that in every single review video, and I wondered why.
