HTC Desire A8181 week GPS - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, what to you suggest to upgrade because of week, connection loosing GPS. I am on stock 2.3.3 and mainly use phone to GPS navigation. Please suggest any flawless working GPS upgrade. Thank you in advance.

Navigation programs (either Google Maps as iGO) work about 1 hour (this is not specified time) and after there is stop of navigation and message " GPS signal lost" while I see (in iGO) 7-9 satellites in range! And programs keep searching the satellites endlessly.
What could cause this problem and what the cure is?
I use HTC Desire A8181 and latest origin firmware (2.3.3)

HTC pro2 GPS , help!

Hi guys
I got my first WM phone HTC pro2 recently from Vodafone UK. Everything is good except GPS. I read this forum carefully. I did hard reset, soft reset, set different port and baud, download QuickGPS, I also try some tweaks, buy GPS still not working. when I open Google Maps, clicked the use GPS, after “seeking satellite…” near ten minutes and Google Maps told me I have GPS problem. HTC GPS tool show me GPS signal was 0 and only a red spot on the top of circle. Other GPS programs such as “GPS test” and BeeLineGPS had same result like HTC GPS tool. Open Garmin, always said “searching satellite …” and Tomtom told me “Poor GPS receptions—are you inside the building?”
My questions are, based your guys experience what happened? It is hardware problem or the setting’s problem? When you guys talking about the GPS cannot get fix, do you have GPS signal on the GPS program (like signal strength, some red and green spots on the circle etc)? If I flash hard-SPL and other Radio Rom can resolve my problem? Are there other solutions? Warranty.
I used destinator 7 on a small trip, and was able to work.
However, looking at the settings screen where the signal for each satellite was displayed, I cannot say I am impressed. The signal strength was extremely low...
Can you install destinator and try also yourself?
Apologies if this is very basic, but I assume you are outside with a clear view of the sky when trying it out?

yes , i am in open field, far away from building, several times, more than 40 minutes. thanks I will try it. but I am wondering why signal strength is 0. low strength, hard to fix and no signal strength is totally diferent issue, i guess.
I am proposing the destinator, because it has a function that detects the port & some settings of the gps...
I am on Sprint in the US, but this worked for me. I am not sure if you did this.
If you have TouchFlo enabled go to the Settings Tab, then go to All Settings.
In the all settings, click the Personal then click Phone. In there click GSM/UMTS services (I am assuming you have a GSM phone, I don't know). Select Location Setting and then Get settings. Make sure it is turned on.
Then this part you said you did, but I will tell you my settings anyway. Go back to the all settings. Now go to system and then external gps. Then go to programs and select COM port 9. Under hardware it should be None and the baud rate is 4800. Then under access check the box to have manage gps enabled.
Now, when you use google maps, go to the settings in google maps and click gps settings. Change the option from let windows mobile manage my gps to manual and pick com 9 and 4800.
Then enable the gps and get a clear view of the sky and see if it works. It might take about 20 seconds for it to get some satellites the first time.
Did you notice there is a firmware update to enahnce gps fixes? Might be worth giving it a try
Thanks all.
there is not locaiton at setting, personal, phone , services.
this phone is vodafone branded, i think I need hard-SPL first to flash firmware.

Hi,
I have been experiencing the same problem. Have read many posts. It normally happens when phone your phone displays H or 3G. For some reason the triangulation and the Gps stops working.
Try it when you have E or G showing on the phone it will work like a charm.
This is my second TP2 first one never had a problem and was vodafone branded as well. Will try and find a solution and will let you know. I have tried different radios though!
Hi
I had the same issue with my T mobile branded TP2. Sometimes (after houres) I had a fix and then it dropped again. I discovered that when you switch WIFI off, it all works like charm. WIFI somehow jams the GPS receiver.
Same Issue
I have the Sprint Touch Pro2 and have tried every patch available, several registry edits, different settings and quick GPS settings to get my GPS running properly. Just before my 30 day return/refund period had almost lapsed I decided to exchange my device. Sprint tried to talk me into some drawn out process of dealing with advanced tech support and starting a ticket on the issue which would have gone way beyond my 30 day period to exchange the phone. To make a short story long, exchanging the phone couldn't have been more convenient and upon setting up Quick GPS and trying out the installed Live Search application, my phone found 9 satelites within seconds. I guess it was the device. Just a cautionary tale that if you think you've tried everything to get your GPS working, there's no harm in getting another Touch Pro2.

Hi
I had the same thing. You can leave it outside in clear daylight for about 15 min as this is sometimes how long it takes to pick up the GPS after a ROM change. Also ensure that you have done the QuickGPS download beforehand.
In my case my phone was faulty from the start but after they replaced it it still took a while before it picked up the first time.

You could try HTC GPS Tool (attached). First, make sure there's nothing blocking your view from the sky; it's best to be outdoors. When you open it up, on the top-left there's a button "Open Port." Press that. Then press Menu > Satellite. This will now show you satellites near you (red). When they turn white (it might take a while), you know you are attracting a satellite. Now, without closing HTC GPS Tool, open Google Maps and hit Menu > Use GPS. It should now get your location.
I had the same issue after recently upgrading my 'stock' T-Mobile (US) TP2 to WM6.5. For me, this was resolved after a radio update. Am currently using 4.49.25.57.
check out the aGPS cab in my signature, really speeds up the lock time dramaticly, highly recommended.
Thanks for all your help! Thankyou!

Did you come right?
it seems get better but it need some more time to test!
I have a TP2 (unlocked European version, WM 6.5) and I have no problems getting a GPS signal. I always use the Quick GPS application before powering up my GPS software but when that's done I have GPS signal lock and location lock within 2-4 seconds, whether I'm using CoPilot Live 7 or Google Maps. I've also tried Navigon MN7, same thingm very fast GPS signal lock and location lock.
However, if I don't use Quick GPS it can take several minutes before I get location lock although it will find GPS signal.
All this is tested several times sitting in a moving car in both clear weather and cloudy weather. Also tested from within my apartment, although near a window.
Thanks for your suggestion but I already use quickGPS and still found the problem.
I flashed a new ROM today and the ROM only came with QuickGPS. I tried that, and I still couldn't get a lock. The only way I did get a lock was by installing the HTC GPS Tool (which I talked about in post 3) and using that app. Once I opened the GPS Com Ports, I got a lock in 20 seconds (indoors). I'm not sure if you tried it yet, but the HTC GPS Tool is really the only way I get satellite locks (with any ROM).

GPS not workign

Hello together,
i have my desire now since nearly two month. Im relly happy with the phone. But one problem:
GPS is not working, i don't get a GPS fix.
It didn't work as I had the phone completely new neither now after i rooted it. I already tried a couple of different radios but my phone doesn't find any satelites.
Does anybody else has the problem? Is this just a software bug or is the hardware damaged?
If I have to send it back to HTC, do you know how long does it take till i get my phone back? Im based in germany.
Thank you very much for your help!
best regards
Tom
I only have my desire 2 days now, it has a orange uk branded phone, so I unbranded it to a stock htc rom, and I have the same problem as you, it takes ages to lock a gps signal.
Today it took 30minutes to lock the gps signal on my ndrive.
I don't have a problem with my GPS on my Orange debranded Desire, what ROM are you debranding with?
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
I use this one because of the portuguese language:
RUU_Bravo_HTC_Europe_1.15.405.1_Radio_32.30.00.28U_4.05.00.11_release_121684.exe
Do you use any program to help catch the gps signal?
Regards
I lost mine with a radio update, had to use 32.30.00.28U_405.00.11 to get GPS working again. Which radio do you have?
NDrive has problems locking with the Desire's GPS. Launch NDrive, press home button, enable the GPS and goto NDrive again. That works for me most of the times.
Or use Google Maps to get a fix and then launch NDrive.

Thanks, i will try that, as soon as I can I will report if it works.
Thanks again
I tried it with these radios:
32.30.00.28U_4.05.00.11
32.37.00.32U_4.06.00.16_2
32.41.00.32U_5.08.00.04
And with none of them I got GPS fix.
I tried it also with differnt applications:
Google Maps
Navigon
GPS Status
GPS Test
But without success, no GPS fix at all
Oh by the way, i tried it also with the Stock ROM and with OpenDesire 1.4 and OpenDesire 1.5
€: I use now OpenDesire 2.1 with the newest Radio 32.42.00.32U_5.09.00.08
I still don't have any chance to find a satelite. Has anyone an idea to fix the problem?
i don't know if it's allowed on this board, i just wanted to push my message to the first page, after it was now on page 15. Perhaps anyone has an idea about fixing the problem.
Thank you!
All that worked for me was trying the radio I had originally (before I started playing around). You tried any of the older ones?
Hi,
I also now have a problem with GPS fix. First I have overheating & reboot problem, then MB were replaced & now I can't get fix (no satellites at view at all). I hope that this is software related (although I do not use GPS much). So probably somebody knew how to perform cold reboot of GPS sensor (I perform this with previous Touch Diamond to bring GPS back to life)?

Differences in GPS accuracy in radio versions?

Hi,
I'm currently on radio version Radio_12.35d.60.140fU_26.08.03.07_M_Test running CoreDroid Desire HD V4.6.
As I'm using my phone for Geocaching, I'm not very happy with the GPS accuracy.
My /system/etc/gps.conf is set to NTP_SERVER=europe.pool.ntp.org.
I've tried the usual reset and download A-GPS using GPS Status, and I get a fix pretty quick.
When I go Geocaching my friend with an iPhone4 (!) has a much more accurate GPS. I miss my target with 10 m.
So my question is, are there any differences in the GPS accuracy in the different Radio versions?
BR,
C

I think the only way to answer this question is to suggest that you try different radios and see what works best for you.
The success or failure of the radio depends on so many factors.... where you live, carrier, rom, signal strengths, etc, etc..... and also on what you are looking for from the radio ie battery life, phone signal, gps signal, etc.
There is no definitive answer!
Some days ago I struggled with some GPS troubles too.
It took me quite a while to figure this out but it is well reproducible on my DHD (everything performed outside, for sure):
GPS from the radio 12.28e.60.140f_26.04.02.17_M2 from WWE 1.72 or the 12.35d.60.140fU_26.08.03.07_M_Test radio behave like this: When you start GPS status for the first time after boot the DHD starts to fix one satellite after another and then keep them ALL fixed. When you now quit GPS Status and restart it the DHD starts to fix satellites again but then lose some of them just to fix them again a second later or so, then loses some of them again and so on. Sometimes you then have just 3 or 4 satellites fixed. The only way for me to get rid of this strange behavior is to make a cold restart then GPS status is fine again for the first start, but after restarting GPS Status same again.
When I use the radio from the 1.32 WWE this does not appear after restarting GPS Status, it always fixes as much satellites as possible and KEEP them CONSTANTLY fixed (here in Austria regularly around 9). When I use my DHD for car nav I don’t care too much about it but I guess this might play a rule when you use it for geocaching (and need more accuracy, which is provided by more fixed satellites, if I am not wrong) … hope that helps a little bit.
This is the Desire HD's only flaw, the GPS. Well for me anyway.
You can get it working to a point. And i think all the guys cooking ROMs have got this right now.
For example i am running CM7 RC4 and i can now always get a lock but it bounces a lot. What i mean is, take google maps for example, the GPS locks, and almost never loses the lock now, but the circle that fixes your position on the map is constantly on you then way off you all the time. So it knows that you are 'somewhere there'. which for a GPS in an urban area 'somewhere there', anything from 10m - 500m, is not good enough.
In reality it is not very good at all and is very disappoint as the big screen makes using maps a big plus
I have given up on trying to get this to work now. My Desire contract is up for renewal soon so i will get another phone and at this point an HTC phone may not be my next phone. HTC has mostly great build quality but they don't seem to care if the phone features work or not. Which is sad because if they addresses this issure, and its been the same for a good while now, they would be the the best phone for sure.
Personally i think that they could do better with the camera and GPS, the hardware.
Oh and i have also tried many different radios.

GPS problems

Hello!
I have my Desire for 2 weeks now and really satisfied with it. However, I have some problems with the GPS:
It sometimes takes ages to lock on a satellite. I use a program callled GPS status where I can check if it sees any satellites, but sometimes it only sees one satellite.
I tried to update the aGPS data with GPS status, it didn't help much. Second I tried changing the NTP server with Fasterfix, but after I reboot my phone it goes back to some north american server. Do I have to make this change everytime I turn on the phone? (My phone is rooted and I'm on stock ROM, tried latest radio, but it haven't got better)
The last question: Isn't this a hardware failure that it sometimes works and sometimes not? I have a 2 year warranty so it won't be a problem. Thank you for your help in advance
