Able to install Custom Recovery - Cannot Install any ROM - G Pad 8.3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

was on software D with stock rom 4.4.2.. I am able to root.. and then able to get get TWRP for stock 4.4.2 install. So now I have custom recovery.
So I had the dimming issues and all fingers point to downgrading to stock 4.2.2 for ROM compatibility. So found the files to to downgrade to 4.2.2 with version of TWRP 2.7.0.1. So that seems to work. I don't get dimming issues with the LG boot screen comes up for example (my assumption that I have 4.2.2. installed now).
Now any ROM I throw at it, Slimkat, Mahdi, Pacman, CM11, it either freezes at boot and/or freezes in a few seconds once it's booted and I can swipe around in the OS. I tried wiping cache, dalvik, data, system, internal SD hoping that help install the rom cleanly, but still no go..
Any ideas? Am I missing something?
Thanks in advance.

[Q] Boot Fail after Custom ROM

I have a Samsung Galaxy Nexus GSM and have been trying to install the Paranoid Android flavor custom ROM, I had 2.22 installed not long ago but managed to screw it up when I updated it without clearing my security settings (I had a 4x4 pattern swipe which I couldn't enter with the update which restored it to 3x3 pattern) so I wiped and restored to stock 4.2. I'm now trying to re-install with any custom ROM but it's not working.
Whenever I install a ROM it seems to install ok but when I get to the boot screen it just hangs on the nexus/PA logo.
I've tried with:
Goo Manager
TWRP 2.2
TWRP 2.3
CWM 6.0.1.5
and with
PA 2.22
PA 2.99.1
PA 2.99.5
PA 2.99.6
PA 2.99.7
and I always get the same error, I've tried wiping all options within TWRP and CWM and going from there but that doesn't seem to work, the strange thing for me though is that if I re-install a stock Google ROM it works perfectly fine.
I'm fairly new so please be gentle.
flash the latest twrp and move the rom and gapps to your sdcard then follow this..
1. factory reset
2. wipe system
3. wipe cache
4. wipe dalvik
5. flash rom
6. flash gapps
7. reboot
if it still freezes at boot animation pull battery reboot to recovery wipe cache/dalvik and reboot
Thanks for the suggestion but that didn't work.
Any other suggestions?
When you say TWRP 2.3 do you mean 2.3.2.1? http://teamw.in/project/twrp2/90
Clockwork 6.0.1.5 is also outdated, newest is 6.0.1.9.
You need to update your recoveries for Android 4.2.X which is what PA 2.99 is based off of.

Yes I did mean 2.3.2.1, I wasn't sure what the whole version number was at the time and I was halfway through resetting up stock on my phone at the time so I didn't bother to check exactly. sorry about that.
Is there a way to completely wipe everything on the phone so that it is bare stock? I was just wondering if I would be able to start from a clean phone if it would make any difference. I'm aware of cache/delvik cache/internal storage/(i think it's called "system partition" or something like that).
Using TWRP, wiping cache, dalvik, and system should wipe everything except the sdcard contents. So doing these wipes should make your phone "bare stock" again as you described
Why don't you try downloading another custom ROM or download the same ROM again because maybe it is corrupted or something

RANT: huh..... seriously? you couldn't have browsed around, searching for this COMMON issue (which usually comes down to user "error"), read the STICKIES, before posting?
first, internal storage = /data/media aka /storage/sdcard0/ aka /sdcard/

[Q] Upgrading to 4.3- Stuck on Kernel Splash Image

Hey Everyone,
I have been trying to upgrade my phone from 4.2.2 to 4.3, TWRP 2.6
My settings for 4.2.2 are as follows: TASK650 7.20b, Stock Kernel, LK3 Modem and corresponding boot loader , TWRP 2.6
I decided to give PAC-Man 4.3 nightlies a try following these steps. Factory reset 2x, format data, update modem to MG2 and corresponding bootloader. Now the first time the ROM loads there is no problem, brings up the G-mail account information and everything is works. Rebooting the phone however causes it to freeze on the Kernel Splash, and does not allow for the ROM to boot.
Attempts to fix: factory reset, format data, wipe cache and dalvik as well as internal storage. Followed the process for installing the ROM, still intial works but reboot fails and same thing happens.
To get my phone working again, I have ODINed back to LK3 modem and bootlaoder, and restored my latest 4.2.2 backup.
What can I do to upgrade to 4,3? OR is it that my phone cant handle the new update? Anyone else in a similar situation?

[Solved] D2LTE builds Stuck on Boot

Is anyone having an issue with the new D2LTE builds that have been built recently?
I have tried to flash a few (carbon and c-rom) and just get stuck at kernel splash page. I am on the newest TWRP(2.7), the lk3 modem/bootloader and wiped data, cache, dalvik, and reformatted my internal sd card.
If anyone else is experiencing this, what was done to resolve it?
Edit: I have now also tried
1. Restoring to original stock touchwiz 4.1.1
2. Wiping cache from original recovery
3.Rerooting
4.Restoring a backup of 4.3
5.Attempted to update to C-Rom, Carbonrom, Resurrection Remix -- No Luck Fails

I'd like to know myself. I'm stuck too. I can flash a 4.3 rom and everything works, but when I reboot, it gets stuck. All was fine until I flashed Wicked rom and flashed " MJ2 bootloader MJB" Now every time I reboot it gets stuck. Also If I try a reflash, the only way to get it to bootup is to format before flashing.
Try using Philz Touch as your recovery program.

I had cwm when I originally started out, switched to twrp to see if the recovery was the issue.
I assume you were running the latest version of cwm before you switched to twrp so it can't be the recovery.
Are you doing a full wipe of the system, cache, data, and Dalvik before installing the ROM?
Yea every time I wiped data, cache, dalvik , I even reformatted once. I have managed to boot up into tasl650AOKP which is a d2lte build but no other ROMs. I mean at this point it looks like I should just wait a bit to see if it is something with the ROMs interacting with my phone(as per all phones are made different)

Are you wiping the system before installing? Have you tried wiping system, dalvik, data, cache, install the rom, wipe and re-install the same ROM a second time without trying to boot the ROM in between the 1st and 2nd ROM install?

Yeah I gave it a shot still no dice. I keep seeing other people having similar issues, so I am still leaning it has to do with the differences in d2lte builds vs dtatt builds

d2att ROMs are okay? Just not any d2lte?

As I stated before I am able to boot int Task650AOKP(Which is a d2lte build), any of the others that I have tried have not worked. There are some updates out today, I am going to attempt again and post back results.
As a test, I flashed my i747m back to stock 4.1.2 via Odin. I then installed the latest version of Philz Touch for the d2lte and installed the d2lte version of Validus. Validus booted without any problems.
Edit: just tried the lastest nightly Pac-Rom and Resurrection ROM. Both ROMs had no problem booting to the desktop.

Thanks for the help, I actually was just able to boot into C-Rom by following the same steps except I am using TWRP. No idea really what caused the Roms to get stuck on boot. Quite annoying.
I had TWRP on my phone but I was having problems installing ROMs when I first got the phone in January. As soon as I switched to CWM or Philz, no problems at all except for ROMs based on a stock 4.3 ROM.

No Custom ROM? Help!

My Xperia ZL won't allow me to install a custom ROM.
Here are the steps I've taken.
1. Updated to 10.6.... (Lollipop fw) via Flashtool
2. Boots correctly, everything seems to work.
3. Flashed boot.img from Paranoid Android and went into TWRP to flash the ROM zip (wiped cache, system and data before).
Did step 3 to test the same for OmniRom too.
4. Phone boots, shows Bootanimation, shows Optimizing apps, then hangs after finish and does step 4 again.
Please help me, I could install custom ROMs on the device before, suddenly it does not work anymore.
Note: EVERYTHING works fine with Stock. Flashed stock ftf multiple times and tried these steps.
Thanks for your help
It seems to be a Bootloop. Try below steps;
1. Through TWRP wipe (system+cache+dalvic cache+data+android secure)
2. Install ROM.zip
3. Wipe cache+dalvic cache+data
4. Reboot
Hope the above steps helps you
Regards,
hitman-xda
@hitman-xda I've tried these steps, except for android secure.
What is that partition and what does it do?
Cannot find it in Advanced Wipe of TWRP.
Thanks
It is the mysterious part. Actually no one knows about it. Some says, it contains secured links/data of some apps.
If you are clean flashing ROM, that's means you have to wipe everything except storage part. That's the reason I mentioned it.
If you can't find it, just leave it
@hitman-xda So I've already done what you suggested, with no luck.
Guess I'm stuck on stock till someone helps me
Thanks for your reply
did you install de correct kernel?
maybe you should wipe everything, install the correct kernel and after that, install the custom ROM
i don't now if it will work, but at least try
I did fastboot flash boot boot.img (got it from ROM zip)
Then erased everything and flashed ROM.
No luck
Does that Paranoid Android was built for your phone?
Your phone loops from 'optimizing apps' , that means your phone is unable to load dalvic/art for the apps.
Also check weather PA ROM can be flashed over lollipop, if not then you have to downgrade an then try the same procedure.
Also you can download stock kernel with recovery, flash it and then directly try to flash your respective ROM.
Usually ROM.zip contains kernel and get flashed during installation of zip, just the thing is they can be flashable over some selective android versions.

Wiped Internal Storage; now phone reboots on loading ROMs

Hey guys,
So last night I accidentally wiped internal storage in TWRP. I guess that messed up my partitions or something, I don't know. Anyway, I can still access recovery, and I've tried to do a restore (one that I made back when I was on stock 4.4.2 I think) but after that it tries to boot, gets to "Android is upgrading... Optimizing app Y of X." and once that operation completes it shows the lockscreen for about a tenth of a second, and the phone reboots.
I'm stumped. Anyone know what can I do?
Sorry if this has been asked a hundred times. For some reason the search function in the forums isn't working for me. And I've been looking for a solution all morning.
EDIT: FYI when I tried the restore I did only System and Data and not Boot, because I was afraid that'd cause more problems.
Did you try restoring and performing a factory wipe before booting the newly-restored ROM?
It seems that Marshmallow based roms aren't working, but Lollipop ones will boot. Not sure why as I didn't have any problem with the same MM roms in the past.
More info:
MM roms wont flash in TWRP; after the failed attempt, TWRP says system cannot be mounted until I either wipe or install a 12.1 rom.
Tried to install a stock rom (4.4.2) and it failed in TWRP. Just says "Error Flashing"
Are you performing a full wipe (system, Dalvik, cache, data) before installing or restoring a ROM? Is the phone running the latest version of TWRP?

Yes to full wipe. TWRP is 2.8.7.0, so yeah I think it's the newest? Not 100% sure.
Wiping internal storage should not affect the partitions. I'm not sure that TWRP even has the ability to change partitions.
Yes, 2.8.7.0 is the latester version of TWRP.
If you are on the nj2 bootloader, try flashing this in TWRP: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3-att/general/rooted-ucufnj1-stock-rom-t2985006
Welp, seems to be all good now. Not sure if I really did anything to fix it or not. I tried to install a stock ROM but it wouldn't boot (stuck on Samsung logo) but after that my CM13 ROM installed properly again. The one CM13 ROM I have still wont install at all - maybe that file became corrupt or something? Not sure if that's even possible.
Either way I'm all fixed up. Thanks for all your help.
Cheers
Glad you got it sorted out. If you do figure out what you did to get it working, post your answer as it may help others that are in a similar situation.
