So far I am loving my G3, but this weekend I found a shortfall. My old G2's navigation was just like any other Android device with turn by turn instructions, the little arrow pointing your direction. The G3 however seems allot different. The voice commands and instructions given are correct, but the navigation arrow snakes all over a static map. The arrow doesn't point forward, showing you when a turn is coming, it just moves around on a static map turning in all directions. Is this a setting I'm just not seeing, because I rely heavily on the direction of travel and less on the spoken or printed directions. I've resorted to using waze and other forms of navigation as the stock navigation is just confusing. Does anyone know if there is a setting or a way to setup the device to be more like a standard garmin'esk device with the arrow pointing towards where you're going?
Mmmm out of the box my g3 and the google maps navigation just worked fine. Maybe u need 2 fiddle with the settings of google maps

Hey guy's I know the 3GS uses the digital compass to rotate the map so it's direction up/forward, I can't seem to find that for the Desire, just wondered if anyone knew how to do it??
IIRC you can turn the compass on in the labs option.
I can't see in on my T-Mobile version, updated to Maps 4.1.0
Cant see it on mine either (T-Mobile)
i think he means my location button in labs mine shows a compass arrow
It was a labs option on G1... not on desire seems. does the arrowhead icon not rotate with the phone as you would expect a compas to do? Seems to on mine.
it does rotate on mine n1 that is
What I mean is that on the iPhone when you've got the map up it spins so that the direction your driving or walking etc is straight up like most sat nav's do,
The desire just has a pointer showing your direction but doesn't turn the map around so it might show you travelling down or left or right.

that's strange..... seems weird that it wont do that. I was watching a video on the HD2 using google maps and the compass and that definitely turned the map as you moved.
The legend can do it, so surely your desire can!

Street view compass mode works fine on the desire, theres no compass mode for the position of the map in birds eye view though.
Rotate screen
hi To auto rotate you need to select this option from Programs, Sound and display

This has nothing to do with Google Maps. This just rotates the display from portrait to landscape.
On Tomtom, if I wanted to occasionally check my route, I'd press the bottom of the screen, then browse directions, and it would show me my turn by turn with text and roundabout icons.
With copilot, is there as fast a way? I must be missing something simple. Currently, it seems I have to do this lengthy procedure:
Menu/Press Right/Plan or Edit/Show Route/Press OK/(it calculates the route again that it already calculated)/Press Preview
then finally it shows the Turns List.
Surely someone uses copilot 8?
sorry, running Sygic and works like a charm.
If your using copilot premium, click on the bottom left rectangle madonia of 6 blue squares and its an option there

Can you enter your destination? I cannot on galaxy s2. Backspace etc. doesnt work. Doesnt find postcodes etc. The predictive search takes over, doesn't let me enter anything.
Does anyone else have the same problem?
On my 3d with Google navigation I would get turn by turn directions with street names. With the ET it doesn't say street names. Anyone know how fix this?
There are two pieces of mapping software on the phone, Maps and Directions. Maps does not give turn by turn directions, Directions gives turn by turn directions. In Maps there is a button to have it pass the address and route to Directions for the turn by turn directions.

I think he was referring to spoken street names, not maps vs navigation.

You have to download the voice intregation plugin from the market...the first time u try to navigate it it should ask u if u want to download it...

Is there a setting for google maps so that it turns to the same direction I'm facing rather than always north? In other words, the map would line up with the real world. I'd like this to work even when I don't have a data connection. I thought google nav would do this, but I can't get it to work properly offline.
You need to have a GPS lock before the maps turn according to the direction you are facing.
Then press the small square icon with a compass image(i think) at the top right of the map.

When I have a GPS lock and am in google maps, the small square icon with the compass image in the upper right just moves the map so that the blue my location arrow is in the center of the screen.
First tap should change it to a compass, second tap will do what you want...
That did it
Whenever I use gps on Google Maps, the location icon shows the direction backwards being opposite from the tip of the phone direction that I'm pointing at. It seems like I'm walking backwards on the map. Any help pls?
