Wonder if anyone else is experiencing this...when my phone updates apps from the market, the app icon is saved as a picture in my gallery. Deleting it doesn't do anything to the app and it gets annoying when you update 20 apps at once. Any ideas or experience on how to stop this?
I am rooted and all roms I tried have this happening on them, so it can't be them.

I was wondering what those were... They seemed pretty harmless so I just ignored or deleted them.

The stock gallery sucks. Use "quickpic" and long press and! Click exclude and it won't show that folder anymore. Plus the quickpic app sets photots as wallpapers in higher quality.
Do any of you have app monster installed? I installed the app mentioned above and went to ignore the directory of the icon image....said it was found in appmonster, deleted it and problem is solved.

Just guessing, but could you have "Auto-add widgets" checked in Market settings? Maybe what you're seeing are icons for the widgets it creates.
You can navigate to the folder on your SDcard and create a blank file
".nomedia" and then remount your sdcard and those files will no longer display in the gallery works good for these you don't want easily found

I have been using Quickpic over Gallery for months now. It really is great. If I could set lockscreen wallpapers from it, Gallery would have been deleted a long time ago..edit..maybe you can set lockscreen wallpaper with Quickpic ..

It must have been added recently because I swear it wasn't possible before..

Actually, I tried freezing Gallery and then the opinion to set Lockscreen wallpaper from Quickpic disappears...so can't delete Gallery! Damn

Seems like an odd issue. Do you have any icon packs installed or something like that? I know Gallery will create thumbnails for something like that. Have you checked to see what the name of the folder is that the icons are in?
If it's icons packs or for some reason a folder is being created with the thumbnails in it then just do the .nomedia thing and reboot (or cycle unmount/mount of the sdcard).
It was definetly app monster pro. Anytime I updated/downloaded a new app, it would save an image file of the app icon in its directory. I deleted app monster since I use titanium instead, problem solved.

I have full stock JB 4.1.1 and I am having this strange issue: when I try to move an app icon from the app drawer into a folder on my home screen, I cannot: dragging the icon on the folder simply make all folders move around.

yes if I try again sometimes it works while sometimes I need to try 3 4 5 times...
just wondering if i'm the only one
not normal though
Place app on the desired screen first. Double tap on an open area on that screen. Now drag the app into the folder.
I've noticed that folders and icon movement depends on how fast you drag the icon on top of each other

Duplicate post. Delete.

Its finnicky but you definitely can drag straight out of the app drawer into a folder. Just gotta move it in there quickly otherwise the phone will move the folder out of the way.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Is the folder full? I think you can only have 16 apps in a folder. If the folder is "full" then it will just move around if you try to put another app into it.
That's a new "feature" in Jellybean. A new mini-game called "chase the folder"
I've been trying out various 4.2 ROMs over the course of the past few weeks, only to return back to 4.1.2 each and every time. I always manage to get all of my files transfered back from that dreaded "0" files without any issues. That is until yesterday. After deciding that I'm still not sold on 4.2, I flashed back to 4.1.2, transfered all of my files, and then restored a backup from just before flashing. Apparently, now I can't view any of my pictures. They're in the gallery but they're all greyed-out and I cannot view them. What happened and is there any way to get them back to normal? I'm extremely disappointed as they're all quite meaningful to me... Help!

Try any other gallery app such as QuickPic which is available on the Play Store. I hope this solves your issue somehow

If you can access them via any file manager, then I suggest to take them to your PC and ensure that they are viewed correctly on your PC. If so then they are safe and just restore again or flash a new ROM and put them back. Hope this helps

Yeah, they're visible just not viewable, if that makes any sense to you. I'll try transferring them to my computer now to see what happens. Thanks again!

OK. Connected to computer. Every picture pops up as a file as they usually would. However, every time I try to view a picture, I get "Photo Gallery can't display this picture because it is an empty file." Ouch. Sounds like they're lost and gone forever...

Did you try restarting your GNex to see if they will not be grey?
Assuming you have some pictures in the DCIM folder, then try accessing them from storage/sdcard0/DCIM not /sdcard/DCIM then sending them to PC to check one more time.

I rebooted a couple of times and even reflashed the ROM yet still get the same result. When I try to open one of the greyed-out pictures and click on details, I get - Path: /storage/sdcard0/DCIM/Camera/IMGxxxxxxx.jpg
That help at all?

The "0" file no longer exists as I deleted it after transferring all of the files back to my SD card. I always use ES File Explorer and the cut and paste method. Must be something happened when I tried to transfer them this last time...

Are you talking about the 0 folder on the /sdcard/ ???
I was talking about /storage/ directory which you can only access if you have root and enable it in ES File Explorer.

Hi, I'm having a similar issue, been trying to fix it by flashing different versions and lock/unlock combinations, but all my files are screwed up, can't seem to fix it. I too get grey/black photos and videos, but what's worse is that I can't access any of the files through regular PC exploration.
I used Nexus Root Toolkit v1.6.1 to backup my stuff, but it gave me this problem :/
If I find a way to fix it, I'll let you know

Honestly, this is the first time I see such pictures with this yellow triangle. I do not exactly know what this means but if these images are lost then they would not have shown at all I guess, so I will try to search for a solution on the Internet and will let you know if I found anything. For the time being, I hope some other more experienced members will be able to help you much bettER. Good Luck!
This is the first time I've encountered this issue as well. I'm at a loss... Its strange, all of the files are there but have that little yellow triangle and contain no data. My only hope is that they're still in there... somewhere.

Check the following two things:
1- If you go to the details/properties of any of the images, is there a logical size for each of them?
2- Does it show the same yellow triangle when checking the pictures via /data/media/0/ , /storage/emulated/0/ , and /sdcard/ ?
I am just trying to collect more information so hopefully other members also can help you bettER

Here's an example of one of the "picture's" properties. And no matter which way I check them, they all have the same yellow triangle over them...

Do you know if there's a way to extract files from an .AB (Android Backup) file for windows? I want to know if my pictures and videos are really in there; after running an SD rescan, all my files disappeared from the SD Card and I can't see them on the PC or phone, I'm starting to believe the backup I made with Nexus Root Toolkit just made some "ghost" image of the files but they are actually gone.
ok so about a week ago i got an update through kies and now i have these odd black icons in my pictures folders. any ideas on how to get rid of them?
I'm getting the same thing, but I'm not fond of the stock gallery app anyways. I use Quickpic and its free and better IMO. All my pics show up fine using that.

Thanks, I'll look into that. It may sound weird but I try to avoid using apps to do normal os things. I like to use the built in file structure as much as possible.

I had this issue once after a restart; I had the same amount of those black icons as I did pictures, about 600 or so. The only thing that fixed it was shutting down phone, remove SD card, turn on phone, then reinsert SD card.

Go to the google play store and search for an app called "nice catch" and select all the options. It should log what is causing your issues.

Are your photos saving to internal memory or to an SD card?
Plug it into a computer and see if you can access them. The folder will be: DCIM.

Good Lock has this module, from Samsung with no ads...
Look for Good Lock on the Galaxy Store then go to the family tab. You can download the separate modules...
No need to go to 3rd party...

If the images were saved to the SD card it sounds like the card maybe corrupted, damaged or have dirty contacts.
Savage what you can with a computer as suggested then deal with the card.
You do have free space left on the internal storage, right?
Were those night shots you lost?
Have you tried disk digger?
