ok so about a week ago i got an update through kies and now i have these odd black icons in my pictures folders. any ideas on how to get rid of them?
I'm getting the same thing, but I'm not fond of the stock gallery app anyways. I use Quickpic and its free and better IMO. All my pics show up fine using that.

Thanks, I'll look into that. It may sound weird but I try to avoid using apps to do normal os things. I like to use the built in file structure as much as possible.

I had this issue once after a restart; I had the same amount of those black icons as I did pictures, about 600 or so. The only thing that fixed it was shutting down phone, remove SD card, turn on phone, then reinsert SD card.

Wonder if anyone else is experiencing this...when my phone updates apps from the market, the app icon is saved as a picture in my gallery. Deleting it doesn't do anything to the app and it gets annoying when you update 20 apps at once. Any ideas or experience on how to stop this?
I am rooted and all roms I tried have this happening on them, so it can't be them.

I was wondering what those were... They seemed pretty harmless so I just ignored or deleted them.

The stock gallery sucks. Use "quickpic" and long press and! Click exclude and it won't show that folder anymore. Plus the quickpic app sets photots as wallpapers in higher quality.
Do any of you have app monster installed? I installed the app mentioned above and went to ignore the directory of the icon image....said it was found in appmonster, deleted it and problem is solved.

Just guessing, but could you have "Auto-add widgets" checked in Market settings? Maybe what you're seeing are icons for the widgets it creates.
You can navigate to the folder on your SDcard and create a blank file
".nomedia" and then remount your sdcard and those files will no longer display in the gallery works good for these you don't want easily found

I have been using Quickpic over Gallery for months now. It really is great. If I could set lockscreen wallpapers from it, Gallery would have been deleted a long time ago..edit..maybe you can set lockscreen wallpaper with Quickpic ..

Actually, I tried freezing Gallery and then the opinion to set Lockscreen wallpaper from Quickpic disappears...so can't delete Gallery! Damn

Seems like an odd issue. Do you have any icon packs installed or something like that? I know Gallery will create thumbnails for something like that. Have you checked to see what the name of the folder is that the icons are in?
If it's icons packs or for some reason a folder is being created with the thumbnails in it then just do the .nomedia thing and reboot (or cycle unmount/mount of the sdcard).
It was definetly app monster pro. Anytime I updated/downloaded a new app, it would save an image file of the app icon in its directory. I deleted app monster since I use titanium instead, problem solved.

That images are usually saved by an application you installed previously..
Make sure no apps uses that images, and eventually consider uninstalling it
Well seems like is my sd blocking all kind of write/deletion action since i cant even take a screenshot or save anything im on AOKP Milestone 5 and francos kernel Milestone 3 Anyone having similar issue?

Thanks! At least I got some feed back. I ended up fixing it. But it took all day. I had to Odin back to stock, re root. Then format the phones SD card and the external SD card. Now she works beautifully!

I wanted to clear up some internal storage space and decided to move some picture files to my micro SD. When they were done transferring all desired picture files, the pictures didn't show. So, I moved them back to internal storage.... Now the majority of pics are now black!!!! I had a lot of great pics of the kids that are now lost. I tried backing my phone up but it never seems to work. Want to flash jb-mr1 milestone 2, but don't want to lose any more pics...please help!!!

Sorry to hear that! I've taken great pics and videos of my kids....and about every week I get them on my computer. You gotta solve that problem in the future. Phones are way to unreliable to count on important pics or anything else to be reliably kept safe.
Sounds like your pics corrupted transferring them. Figure out how to back them up in the future and do it frequently is all I can say.

Figure out a way....or get a camera. Never rely on the phone to keep your pics safe. If I lost all the great pics I've taken of my young ones, I'd lose it! Lol

Got any apps that would keep using Media service? When you force stop it does it come back again?
Yeah it does but I can't figure out which app would be the cause...been monitoring with better battery stats and doesn't list a contributor. Uninstalled music hub with titanium backup and I don't use Google music...can't seem to lock down the cause.

You use stock browser?
You could try Avast Mobile Security. It has a feature called Network Meter that shows each apps MiB usage. Good luck!
I use Next launcher...thanks for the input guys I'll keep ya posted

Yeah I've been trying to figure out if that's the case but I keep sync off and mostly just watch movies I've put on my ext sd card..maybe my sd card is the problem?
Sent from my SPH-L900 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
What size is your sd card? I had this happen with a 32 gb one time. Switched to 16 and all has been fine. It also might be a corrupt file on the sd if it is the sd.

Yeah I've got a 32 gb, have had it in this thing since I got it when the note 2 came out...haven't had any issues until recently. I did notice when I popped it out overnight then put it back in today the media scanner went nuts for a while (the pic I attached)

this ^^^ may be your issue. a corrupt image, music, video file somewhere on your sd. a lot of ppl say to back up everything on yer sd card to a pc, and then reformat, then add back the contents. i know that stopped it for some. otherwise youll have to figure out what file is corrupted.
when i had a corrupted file, it was a picture that had about 80% of the image on it and the other 20% was just grey. (yep that was corrupted) so i deleted it..
this wonderful app also stops your 'media' process/scanner. you can disable it and enable it and it worked wonders for me in the past, but now CarbonRom has a media scanner toggle built in
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.addz.mediascannerroot please read description and use at your own risk.. like maybe make a nand first.
just an FYI, the service that gets very high when youre listening to lots of music is 'mediaserver' - which is not related to the 'media' process
Thanks to everyone for all of your input! You guys have been a huge help knocking this little annoyance out!!

Yeah sounds like you're having issues with the external SD. Mediascannerservice is what scans for media on SD cards. I've had that issue before and it was a pita! Reformatted and everything was fine till I added all my files then it returned. One of the files (a movie) was no good. It got corrupted and would still play so I never thought anything of it till I tried *watching* the whole movie one day and it cut off with an unsupported message at like 40 mins through. Once I deleted that and rebooted never had the issue again.

I'm thinking that's exactly my problem...I've reformatted it twice but still puts media scanner in overdrive. I've weeded out all the movies I'm bored with and only left a few..today it's a little better but still kept cpu awake running for ten min. Thanks for your input!
