ive had this issue since maybe a month after i bought mine. If my screen is on at more than half brightness for any reason at al it gets blazing hot. if i run netflix for too long, blazing hot. regualar games like words with friends, clash of clans, and facebook/instagram make my phone hot.
i used to be on stock 4.4 but i recently flashed euphoria and it calmed down a bit. still gets hot with high brightness but no longer in games and apps. still looking for a better solution.

Mine gets hot from time to time but not so hot I get concerned.
The only time it became problematic was when I was trying to record a long speech [UHD] and had to force-end my video recording because it hit its thermal limit.

Robo Defense

I sent an email to the developer of Robo Defense to let him know that game isn't working on our phones and that it's causing freezing issues as well as overheating. He asked me to send him the log dump from my phone and he just responded with an inquiry to test it out without the sound enabled. He's suspecting sound to be cause of the issue
Now i just played the game for 10minute or so without sound enabled and it ran great without a hitch and it didn't get hot enough for me to get worried
Can some of you run the game without sound for a prolong period of time to see if it works?
Also based on the description, it looks like there is an issue with sound with atrix as well
Atrix: Disable sound to improve stability

I have always played RD with disabled sound, and it works just fine on SGS2. It does heat up however quite high, and eats TONS of battery juice. With sound off (my usual mode) I would say it heats up about as much as "Aporkalypse" or "Plants vs Zombies" (both no sound too)
P.S. thanks for doing the work with the dev.
Same on mine. No sound it works, sound it freezes. Mine doesnt get any hotter than my n1 did while playing and its still chugging after a year and a half so I'm taking that to mean that the heat is not an issue..... hopefully lol

If you run it with sound on and it freezes, it gets hot if you don't close out robo defense
So i got quite a few levels of robo defense completed with sound turned off and it plays great without any issues. No high heat issues either

I cant say as I ever sat there with it froze waiting to see if the phone would get hot. It does not when it is running gimped with the sound off, it gets no hotter than it did when functioning normally as on the N1.
It's true of other games unfortunately. Galcon and Apparatus both also crash when sound is enabled. Some games of the market specifically indicate to disable sound to increase stability, though don't specifically say this device.
I have reported issues to the Apparatus developer(s) and they indicated difficulty tracking down causes for freezing.
I've been playing it since I got my GS2 4 weeks ago. Its running fine without the sounds. I do not have a problem with heat. Its the same with other games when played for long periods of time. Good game

Sadly i had to since i was trying to get the author of the game some fresh logs while it was freezing up and it got hot enough to get me worried after a few minutes
Ah, thanks for that. I had some oddity when I was on villian rom where the phone would overheat and shut down. Never did find figure it out but there is most def a problem with the cpu going to 100% and not clocking back down for whatever reason under certain conditions and I would guess you were seeing that here. My phone shut down a few times before I figured out it was heat as it would do it sitting idle after use and I had to "catch it in the act" before I figured out it was overheating. Then I stuck it out and tried to associate it with an app or service but failed to do so. Must have overheated it a half dozen times before I started getting nervous and switched roms. At any rate I know that at least my phone can take a few overheats to shut down and survive. In the back of my mind though is the thought that I might have taken some of the life out of the phone as who knows how good the thermal protections are?
I have had this problem on the sgs2 but I stopped it freezing by ticking the option "reduce framerate". I still get sound but both sound and graphics are not as good. This game was awesome on my Nexus One
Just a +1 from me with Robodefence and the SGS2
Robodefence freezes every few minutes, but there does seem to be a pattern in that it will freeze on exactly the same level several times in a row. If I manually save and exit every level or two then it will run for about 5 levels after the last game save and then freeze.
I have submitted several error reports.

Go into options and untick enable sound. Not as good without sound but you soon get used to it....still keeps me amused for an hour each day
i played two variantes of robodefense (simple+HD)(sound enabeled) and had no problems so far ,now is the first time i hear about this in this thread

Same here, played it for 2 months with sound on and off and haven't had a single issue.
heavygunner from com2us also crashes on sgs2 when the sound is turned on. wierd.

Phone becomes slow when hot?

Whenever I play 3D games on my phone, it gets really hot which I think is normal, but the phone also gets really laggy. So laggy that it's almost unplayable. Then I wait for 5 mins for the phone to cool down and go back to the game again and the runs smoothly until the phone gets hot again. Is there anything wrong with my phone or is this normal? I'm on stock 4.0.4 rooted and the game I was playing was Drift Mania Championship 2.

Its called thermal throttling. The CPU throttles down the clock speed when it gets too hot to avoid damage to the chip. I think the heat being developed by this phone is outrageous. Biggest flaw of the device. There is nothing you can do to keep it from getting hot when playing your game. Mine gets up to 90-95 farenheit when simply watching YouTube. Its really bad.
Yeah, it gets a little warm using chrome too , but it's a nice hands warmer during the winter.

Lol.. its honestly sad.. i cant believe they would make something like that. But you could use Ktoonsez kernel and lock the frequencies, however you most likely would damage/shorten the life of the CPU.

The heat Issue?

I am thinking to buy the phone but I saw some posts there are some heat issues. So what is the problem besides the phone getting too hot? Is it shuting down when it gets too hot or get really laggy? Is there any other problem when heated except it gets really hot?

I haven't experienced any heat issues. I have yet to feel my g3 get warm Tbh.
Others (not sure which model) have reported issues with heat, to the point that it causes the device to throttle the brightness down. Again haven't experienced this on my at&t model.

Thanks for the reply, someone with issues ?
Same here not felt it get warm even watching video.
When the phone gets hot several things happen.
1) The CPU is clocked down to help lower heat
2) Brightness is capped to help lower heat
3) If the phone continues to get too hot (usually when its already hot and you then start to play a really intense game, or benchmark the phone may shut itself down.
People complained a lot with the Korean model but I haven't seen anyone with a US model complain. Maybe the type of person that waits is less likely to be a phone gamer? They may have actually tweaked it so it doesn't activate as quickly or harshly. I do know some people disabled it on the Korean model. I haven't heard of anything bad happening but those few people may have felt dumb if it destroyed their phone and not posted that it did...
I have no heating problem with my lg g3 international D855 16gb model, even during quadrant test or playing games.

Define an actual temperature for hot.
I disabled the thermal protection on my AT&T version and yes, I've felt it get quite hot while playing Final Fantasy 6. The heat radiated mainly through the metal power button but the entire top half of the device got pretty hot. Didn't bother me all that much tho, as I've had other devices get hot like that in the past.
I use exposed app CPU temp my g3 sits at about 30c and 45c which is normal temps and about 50ish whith thermal protection on disabled.
what heat issue

My girlfriend picked this up yesterday and this is happening to her G3. Not playing games though, just browsing the internet/reading an article. It makes no sense to me. How can you take control over that? She doesn't want to root the phone.
But yeah, just reading something or even looking at Facebook, the phone gets way too hot.
I picked up the Verizon version yesterday. It's gotten pretty warm around the power button a few times for me also. Typically not bad or what I would consider unusual with one or two exceptions.
My G3 (UK) go very very hot yesterday when I was on the train playing a graphically intensive game.
It shut itself down and then refused to turn on again. Ever.
I tried everything all night but no joy. I got a replacement handset today.
I'm sure it was because of the overheating that the phone malfunctioned. Without knowing exactly what has happened to it the timing is too coincidental for it to be random hardware failure. It was SUPER hot!

This is strange. Does the kernel not shut the phone down before it "fries" the SOC?,unless the throttling temps are too high? Wonder if this is linked to the display flickering problem myself and another poster had.

Funny you mention display flickering. I had that about 2 weeks ago. The display started flickering really badly, like nothing I've ever seen on any Android device, and I needed to pull the battery to reset. It didn't boot straight away either, it had to cool down a bit.

all phones get warm if you are on it for an extended period of time, surfing (using data), gaming etc etc screen on for long periods of time. those saying they can game and not have heat are lying to you. phone gets warm when screen is on for extended period of time and by phone I mean any phone

Yeah, i had a flickering display which didnt go away.I returned that phone. Another poster yesterday had the same issue.Im wondering if the GPU is frying itself? Although the GPU does throttle as well as the CPU. Running Antutu I would get 60+deg C maybe playing a game for an extended period of time for example is causing damage? Just a theory.

10.1 gets hot with normal use

I just picked up a 10.1 on Sunday, and I really like it, but it seems to be getting fairly hot on the back cover, even with normal use. Just doing some web browsing, installing apps, Clash of Clans, etc. It actually doesn't really matter what I'm doing. If I'm using it for more than 10 minutes, it gets hot on the back near the top of the device under the fingers of my right hand (when held in landscape).
Is this a common thing, or should I be exchanging it for a new one?
Sounds a bit strange, i play emulators on mine and other intensive stuff and it barely gets warm.
Hmm, maybe I need a couple more days with it. If it persists, I might exchange it.

Yes that might be best, I decided to stress mine out so the 4 high power cores and the GPU were maxed out, it gets very warm but I had to really push it for a couple of minutes for that to happen, with general web browsing and the like it shouldn't even be getting warm.
You mentioned Clash of Clans. My 12.2 will get extremely hot when playing CoC. Might be the GPU.
in CM12 no dvfs

Heat

Some phones are great to take camping because if you play Asphalt 8 long enough, the back warms up to the ideal temperature that can bake bread. Rate this thread to express the extent to which the LG G5 stays cool under extended heavy use. A higher rating indicates that even when playing strenuous games for long periods of time, the phone doesn't get uncomfortably warm.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
i think the G5 heats a little bit too much
today i was simply downloading Hearthstone (800MB approx) and in standby it heated too much
i think its quite excellent actually.
i could not notice any throttling during gaming etc. well maybe thats just because even the gpu is idling at <15% during asphalt 8 play
I had zero issues with thus device heating up until last night... I was at the movies with the fam.. In the theater I only had 1x for data and the phone got hot while searching for a better data connection. Cooled right down after leaving the theater.
Coming from an htc m7, so a huge step anyway... Phone is top!
This was one of the first things I noticed because I used the gps probably 45 mins after taking it out of the box. I watch YouTube vids for around an hour a day and after a while it does become noticeable but I have to be honest; it really doesn't bother me all that much.
Can feel warm and a little uncomfortable in warmer weathers (20-30 Celsius).
Mine heats up a lot. I'm a little concerned honestly.

I don't experience anything unusual.
heres the deal boys...
Yes this phone gets hot when its used hard.....if your not incurring reboots while running it hard , then you'll probably be good
After a month buying this , I started getting reboots ....hot and cold
The first time I sent it in , they said to leave sim and battery at home...
I got it back and started the usual 30 or more updates from App Store and phone got real hot and started rebooting again every minute
even when it was cool...it rebooted but at a longer interval...
They told me to send battery in too on second go around...
Just got it back , it had a system update to do and then the 30+ app updates....this phone was getting a workout...
I did the App updates right after the system update with the optimization ....
I'm 20 apps into it...the battery cooled down and the apps are still going...
looks like they have a battery issue with these phones. If I don't report back , then all is good...

No, it doesn't mean that LG has an issue with the batteries. It only means that YOU had issue with YOUR battery.
I'm glad your phone is OK and it was just the battery.
Only got mine yesterday, but I've used it a lot in that short time and it get nowhere near as hot my previous 2 phone a Nexus 4 and G3 it gets warm but not what I would call hot compared to them 2 anyway, at its worst mostly watching videos it can get a quite warm, but gaming it barely gets warm, I'm loving it so far but time will tell I guess but so far so good.
Mine heats up too, specially while using Snapchat or YouTube. Haven't played Asphalt or other graphic-intensive games, so I can't comment whether my device has the same issue with them or not.
Mine stays quite cool during heavy usage, it does get realy hot while charging though. I expect this is the same with others?
