Can you use the Tab S as a phone? - Galaxy Tab S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Can the Tab S be used as a stand alone mobile phone if I get the LTE model? If it can then I will sell my Note II and buy the Tab S 8.4.
I do not want to carry around two devices.

Yes, The LTE version of the Tab S can make and receive calls, SMS and MMS.

Are you sure about that? All the other sources I read says you can only control your phone via an SideSync app.
Which means you will not be able to make any phone calls without the phone.

I am 100000000000% sure that you can make and receive calls/texts as I own the Lte version of galaxy tab s 8.4 and it's the same as the bigger one... that side sync app is for wifi version as it has no sim support

Sidesync is available in lte version too. It needs wifi network to work, though.

different strokes for different folks, though you might look stupid putting one to your ears... Bluetooth device or hands free will do fine.

Whether it look stupid or not, that's my stroke as you said. But the Tab S make phone calls without bluetooth or handsfree?

If you google for Galaxy Tab S 8.4 LTE, you can see, on the picture, the top of the device is an earpiece speaker. If you put your phone SIM card in, you can use it as a phone, putting it against the side of your face and all. Or you can use Bluetooth headset.
I have the 8.4 LTE, although I have not I have not used it as a phone yet (soon), I can see the icons for making calls and SMS Messaging.
Now for the 10.5 LTE, I do not see the earpiece speaker. Maybe you can still use it as a phone but sound will come out as a loudspeaker.

Samsung already phoned it in with Touchwiz so proof it works

The calling function for the LTE version makes the SGTS an all round Device. BIG is definitely Better.

If I were to use the Tab S 8.4 as a phone, how portable is it? Does it fit into pockets?

Internationally, with the exception of Turkey, all Samsung's 3G and LTE tablets support MMS and phone functions regardless of size (yes, the Pro 12.2 3G/LTE is a phone). They can all be used as speaker phones as well as with wired and BT headsets. The U.S. carriers always disable MMS and the dialer in the tablets they sell which is why U.S. XDA members assume those tablets don't have phone features.

just walk up into a store and feel the size in your hands or you rather get a ruler and cut out 8.4 inches on a cardboard to know how big the tabs can be. if you wear skinny jeans i doubt u can put a tab into your pocket.

Sure.

too big to be used as a phone!
Wish Samsung would make a 6.5 to 7 inch Note 4.

I'm really considering the international LTE/3G model (SM-T705) and using it to replace my GN3 on T-Mobile. Just concerned about being limited to the 1900MHz band, which is available in my area, just not all that speedy (or widely available elsewhere). I might even jump over to AT&T if it'll work better.
But with the right holster/pouch, I think it's quite doable. I already use a seidio holster (don't like things in my pockets). And I've been rather interested in Mighty Pouch, which looks like a pretty good way to carry around a large tablet while remaining portable and accessible. Already contacted them and they can pretty much make a custom pouch that'll attach to your belt, for just about anything. And probably wouldn't look entirely ridiculous like some solutions I've seen.
We'll see... my GN3 does get the job done. I just like trying different things. Heck, I might even keep both and just switch sim cards depending on where I'm going.

There are three things that's will not make the Tab S inferior to the Note 3.
1. The size is just not portable.
2. The battery is not removable. The Tab S will not have the battery life of the Note and it is not removable meaning you're dead when the battery runs out.
3. No stylus.

Uhm, OK? This is a 7" tablet being used as a phone.

So Tab S 8.4 will cover his face and require two hands to hold?

[Q] Getting the Phone and Sms.apk On AT&T Galaxy Tab 3 7.0?

So i decided to trade in my Nexus 7 for Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 since it was on sale and the fact it could be used as my main device for calling people instead of using my galaxy note 2. I even watched some reviews for it and saw the Tab with a Phone and Messaging app. But me being me after buying the Tab 3 and looking like a fool in a AT&T store, I realized that the one i bought was the AT&T model instead of the international one. I like the Tab 3 now and was wondering is it possible to get the Phone and Messaging app from the international one and port it to the AT&T one?

I do not believe that it has the necessary hardware built into it so that it can get a phone and mms apk working.
Id say.. return it to att and get your dough$$ back..
Then get the T-211 from Amazon or Negri or Ebay.. or go one bigger and get the 8 incher.... and just swap your sim card from your Note 2 into your new tab and BAM!! A 7 inch phone.... BUT.. NO LTE though.... still H+ is damm good speed in STL where I am...7-9 MPS d/l's...
good luck

Pull the sim out of the mega.... jam it in my T315 8".. and guess what??
BAM!! an 8 inch phone..works just like your phone... make and receive calls, mms, data,cams.. everything.. at the same time even..
Look at the pictures of the devices..
See the green phone ICON on the home screens??

Questions before buying a Note 8.0

I have two primary uses for the tablet in question:
1. I will be using it as a GPS navigation unit on my motorcycle. And it will be used to play music thru my motorcycle's speakers.
*I will most likely be using the headphone jack, or possibly some kind of usb audio out / charger (if I can find such a product) to send audio to an amplifier on the motorcycle. Or possibly via bluetooth.
2. When not on the bike I will be using it mostly for watching videos on it, via plex, netflix, memory card, etc.
Questions:
Network/ Internet connectivity:
I live in Canada B.C.
At first I only cared about a basic WiFi only note 8.0, but now I'm thinking I might be inclined to put on a network in the future, and would like to keep that door open(maybe).
1. If I import a USA note (AT&T):
a. will it work on our networks, fido/rogers/bell/etc
b. I will have to root it and flash it with a custom rom to do that right? and if that is true, will I notice any complications in the future?
Note 8.0 vs tab4 pro
I have already done a bit of research into this but thought I would ask a bit on the subject
The tab4 pro looks overall better, but also more expensive.
!. The only spec difference that I would really care about is the higher resolution screen that the tab4 has. would any one say it's a major difference in reality?
2. Are there any other notable feature that the tab4 has over the 8.0 that I might be overlooking?
Thank you for your help. any amount input is welcome.
Are you talking about the tab pro 8.4 or a tab 4 8.0? I really like the 8.4 tab pro. The screen is amazing on it but I'm not going to count my note 8.0 out either as the picture quality has been plenty satisfying to me. The tab pro has the newer faster processor with a far better gpu. Had I not gotten my note at such a cheap price I would have gotten the tab pro 8.4. That being said I think that if you find a really cheap price on the note 8.0 it's worth it. I'm not disappointed with mine at all. Far as getting an AT&T branded note you'd probably have to sim unlock the device to use it on a Canadian network.

I was referring to the 8.4tab and 8.0 note.
You remind me about my nature, bang for the buck, is probably the biggest factor.
I guess it will come down to which ever one I can save the most on, relatively.
I find when entering the $300+ for a tablet, I get in the zone for I might as well upgrade my laptop instead.
Thanks for the reply.
Not sure about GPS other than it works fine on Wi-Fi.
Video decode in my experience is good, it can generally play most Blu-Ray video fine via MakeMKV (Basically decrypt and remux into Matroska). YMMV with subtitles and audios and third party apps. It's not as powerful as a Snapdragon 800 but very nice (and has more codec support than my Nexus 5 when both are compared at stock).
Can't say anything about USB audio out as I've never dealt with that.
If you only care about HSPA+ service anything supporting 1900 / 850 Mhz will work and as far as I know all cellular ready models support those. I don't know about the LTE bands up there. Unlike us in the USA, Canada pretty much uses the same frequencies for all the carriers.
If you get the AT&T model you will have to get it SIM unlocked by AT&T before hand. I am not sure that can be done from Canada rather than while on AT&T's network as I've never tried it. Typically you have to stick in a SIM from another carrier and enter a code. On T-Mobile with my Galaxy S3 it took a few weeks to get the code via e-mail after supplying my data via phone; YMMV. You would want to SIM unlock before rootinng; bootloader unlock is different than SIM unlock; and custom ROM's don't SIM unlock your device.
If you want 8" and a S-Pen you have no options. Only other alternative would be an Tegra Note 7; I believe they've started making an LTE model but I'm not sure. Personally if you don't want the pen, I'd go with the Galaxy Tab 8.4 Pro because it's got a more powerful processor and a higher resolution panel. If it's all the same to you by all means save money. The Note 8 is likely at it's end of retail life pending a newer version so prices are going down (at least in the USA they have; my fiancee got hers in Alberta last month for $349 and I think they're now $329 here in Georgia).
Feature wise is probably improved MultiWindow mode and anything you like about Samsung's 4.4 tabs that isn't available on 4.1/4.2 era devices like the Note 8. I'm not sure what functionality we're getting in our 4.4 update (AFAIK 3G and Wi-Fi, not AT&T model).

A funny thing happened to me last night.
For the longest time I was under the impression that NON-RT Windows tablets were quite expensive and quite large. Then I find out that there are 8inch full version windows tablets with decent specs and a reasonable prices.
So in short now i'm after a windows 8 tablet, the lenovo miix 2 and thinkpad 8 being my first choices.

I had one for a day before I returned it.
First of all it has no GPS, so right from the start it got eliminated from my options.
Secondly it's speaker is TERRIBLE, even at full volume It was barley audible in a quite room. With my Air conditioner on i couldn't even listen to a movie. I don;t know if the lenovo has better audio but can't be much worse if anything.

You can open up the firefox browser and get into outlook, to click on the links for both phone and tablet.
Ye must install this to your phone... https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.texty.sms
Setup your phones app before installing this to yer tablet... https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mightytext.tablet
Then setup the tablet to sync and send txts as if you are on your phone.

This method is amazing! Thank you so much. IDK if you're very experienced/intouch with VoiP, but I after trying out the app you suggested I noticed an option to make a call. After trying it I realized it sends a signal to the phone to intiate a call. Which was awesome too, especially since I have my BT Headset always on. But then the snowball started rolling and then I though... wouldn't it be amazing to get rid of the phone all together. So I had a couple of questions. Can Data plans be activated on regular tabs like mine (Galaxy Note 8.0 GT-N5110) ordoes one has to have the 3g/4g model of tablet for it to have its own Data Plan? Next, assuming one could have a tablet with its on Dataplan... Are there any VoiP with reasonable monthly charges and reliable service that will allow calls/txt to not only other users of the same app (like skype to skype) but from app to landline etc?

The WIFI only version GT-N5110 has no internal capabilities for data plans, The GT-N5100 and the GT-N5120 both have internal abilities for data plans.
One option for home use is a Verizon share hot spot that is a box for Internet only and requires a data plan. As for portability, you could get car DC to AC adapter that will allow you to use while driving. As long as Verizon towers are available. You would then need to use some Internet phone service that fits your budget and requirements. Knowing that Verizon is limiting data even though they are doubling their LTE data rate, makes me skeptical on how much you will be able to use monthly even though you have a fast connex.
That is as far as I am with such a question, there are other types of data plans and share devices, Sprint seems to be the best deal for getting what you want, but it will be a wee costly, and not all areas are Sprint friendly.
Now if you can get a great deal on family shared data, you can look into getting dual hot spot devices that will double your data rate when setting them up to be bridged, via a robust router... Home routers are limited to one connection to the internet, so looking for such a router will be in the $150.00+ range. Depending on the brand and model, you can have 1 to 4 data connex. That is if your budget allows for such an extravagant option. Portability will be limited to transferring one device from the bridged network when needed, thus allowing internet to be active at home.
As for skype... they do allow calls to land line... but I have tested Text Plus with my AT&T version in the UK. It works well for an app, and even gives you a real phone number for txting and calls. There is a charge for calls but depending on how much you talk, it may less expensive than $9.00 per month VOIP options with apps or hardware to plug in between your existing network.
What you're considering is totally doable, but you don't have the right device. My previous device was a Verizon branded Tab 7.7 that I used as my primary phone via VoIP on their LTE network. Overall, it worked 80-85% as well as a cellphone. When I accidentally destroyed it, I replaced it with the N5100, which I have on a smartphone plan with AT&T.
In order to be a practical replacement for a cellphone, the tablet itself must have built in connectivity, otherwise you'd also have to carry around a hotspot device. Dealing with two devices, battery issues, etc. makes that impractical in comparison to just using a smartphone.
There are many VoIP options, and the cost range from free to expensive. It depends on your needs. Most allow calling and texting to anyone anywhere. I can't make specific suggestions without knowing more about your needs, but I'll describe the process. The first issue issue is the phone number and who has control of it. Do you have a number that you're attached to or are you ok with any assigned number. This influences the second issue, do you want an all in one integrated solution like Skype, or a modular solution, which allows more flexibility. Third, is this going to be used across multiple devices and what kind are they. Lastly, how robust/reliable does the setup need to be (ie. is it your primary phone or just something to play with).
I was initially attracted to using a tablet as a phone to save money. Tablets cost less than smartphones and data only plans are cheaper than smartphones plans. Then I quickly got addicted to the screen size. A tablet makes almost every task easier or more enjoyable compared to doing it on a regular size phone. But using a tablet as a phone did have drawbacks. The lack of an ear speaker meant always having a headset readily available (and charged) or using the speakerphone. Most VoIP apps drained the battery rather quickly. Call quality is highly dependent on network latency, no problem on WiFi, more of an issue when out and about.
I couldn't go back to using a regular phone as my primary device. I'm not saving any money by going this route, but for me it's worth the premium to have a tablet with built-in telephony capability on a smartphone plan. The N5100 is an awesome 8" smartphone.*

Aside from your rather non descript post breaking XDA rules, I wouldn't bother buying anything Verizon branded if you have any desire to modify it in anyway as you won't be able to.

That's fine if you're happy with a locked device. However there may come a time when you come across an issue which needs root to solve or an app that you may want to use. Without it your stuck with it.
Root opens so many doors, I would never even consider a device that I couldn't have control over.
The Verizon and AT&T LTE Tab S 8.4 models both have a locked bootloader and cannot be rooted at this time. And possibly never.
The international LTE TAB S 8.4 model # T705 can be rooted/ROM'd. However, it will not work on Verizon, only GSM.
And even then it may not have LTE bands for all GSM carriers, only some.
So on those it doesn't have bands for, you may be limited to 3G as the fastest speed.
There may be a Sprint LTE device out there but I don't know anything about it.
If it is out there, then it's CDMA (like Verizon).
i understand, im mostly asking about form tho.
is the tab s 8.4 pretty comfortable? id be texting alot which is uncomfortable on the bigger tab s

Can I install hardware on my Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 T700 to make it compatible with LTE 4G?
Highly doubtful unless you can source the correct parts, have the equipment and ability to deal with surface mount devices and have the full schematic then somehow force an update to the bootloader so it's compatible with the new hardware.
Alternative 1 - Use a 3g dongle, mifi, or tether to mobile device.
Alternative 2 - sell yours buy a T705.

Doesn't need to be new does it? You could upgrade to Tab S2.
so I just did a swap from regular 700 wifi to a 707a , it had a busted screen but everything went perfect. freaking ATT even gave me the unlock code and sent it to me in like 4 minutes! Then.....tmobile wants to be super hella lame and tell me it wont work without a mobile things plan or some hot garbage like that EVEN THOUGH it fully is 100 capable and is even connected , I have an old grandfathered inplan and I do get it and would "understand" if it wernt for so many many other things I use on that sim . But ya.. look for 705 as I can't find any type of mods for this thing. I may try and root with Kingo , switch it to super SU make my backups of course and maybe possibly play with fire and safestrap but ya go with a 705 OR actually don't buy any find a different tablet like I may go with a Surface LTE even though its so inferior spec wise it would still do way way more and finally get me use of the SIM......maybe......it better......hmmmm. better check hah.
