I'm going insane trying to find a solution for this. All my calls are really quiet, and for some reason I believe are being routed to the back speaker of the phone. If I rotate it towards the back, it's much louder. Speaker phone is twice as loud. I'm more worried about people listening into my calls or me looking stupid with a backwards phone on my ear.
I tried reflashing roms, rebooting, using soundabout to redirect audio to earpiece, and also swapping the earpiece out with a new earpiece. (The long ribbon cable with the earpiece at the top) and it's still super quiet so I'm beginning to believe it's not a hardware issue. Has anyone else encountered this? I haven't been able to find much information. I love this phone but god damn this is driving me nuts.
Are you running stock or custom?
And have you tried flashing your firmware with Odin and factory resetting? (Will wipe internal sdcard)
I'm running crom 7.1 and I haven't. I lost my backup when I had a hard drive die on me. Was hoping I didn't have to go back to stock though.
Its the best way to tell if its hardware or firmware/rom related. Otherwise you'll have to get with some long time cm users to start investigating it. I dont use cm roms so im not familiar enough to troubleshoot a problem like this.
I have seen other reports of similar issues with cm. Most who flashed stock firmware found it worked fine so it wasn't hardware. I have seen some thst were hardware related though, but it is more likely related to the rom in your case.....I think.
If you're worried about going back to stock though, why not make a new nandroid backup so you can restore back to it after testing stock?

I guess that works. ^.^, honestly, I just don't like touchwiz and the bloat. I guess since I'm rooted I can find a way to debloat though. I'll give it a try in a bit.
So the best thing I can do would be to flash
Wind VLFNF1
PDA: T999VVLUFNF1
CSC: T999VYVLFNF1
Version: 4.4.2 KK
Date: June 23,2014
From the http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1949687 thread, use towelroot to reroot (or will I lose root going back to official firmware?), and test. If it's botched there, it might be a hardware defect, correct?
I am with Wind Mobile, I just don't know if I am able to flash back to an older version or if I should stay on KK.
After 4.3, you can only flash the same or newer builds, so if you flash NF1 firmware, that's alk you can flash from now on. You can still flash old roms though.
Other than that, youve pretty much got a handle on it. And yes, you'll need to reroot. See my Towelroot thread in General for instructions.

Yeah I remember hearing about not being able to revert to a certain version and wanted to ensure I didn't brick my device. I guess I'll flash the latest KK one then. Thanks so much Doc!
Well I flashed the OTA 4.4.2 and it still has the same problem, this sucks big time doc.
Have you factory reset? Sorry if i missed it when going back over the thread.
If you've done that after having flashed the stock firmware with Odin (not Mobile Odin), it usually means its got a good chance of being a hardware problem. But you said you already replaced the speaker right? That tells me if it really is hardware, it may be on the motherboard. Perhaps a shorted or broken connection. Or just some component going bad.
Unfortunately, the only way to know this for sure is to put your motherboard in another S3 and see if you get the same result.
Maybe try swapping SIM cards with someone else who uses Wind. Its not likely to be a SIM card problem, but its an easy thing to test, just to make sure.
I hate to say it, but other than that, im out of ideas... Maybe someone else might chime in with something I haven't thought about, or overlooked. Ill still try to think of anything else you could try and will let you know if I do. I am very sorry I dont have more for you now though...

I'm with Koodo now since I moved where Wind has no reach so that meant a new sim card already.. I hope it's not motherboard, that'd be indicative of this phone being toast eh? I did factory reset. When taking the motherboard out the components appeared fine. Unfortunately I don't know anyone else with an s3. Crap.
It may not be hardware still, but I am kind of leaning that way if it acts the same on any setup, including different versions of full stock.
It is possible it could be an account, SIM card, or other firmware corruption issue. (Firmware as in, not the partitions that are generally flashed when using Odin) I dont know of any way to determine if it is, or how to fix it if confirmed to be that though. Im not sure if there is anything in the NV Data that is used for audio. I will try to take a look later on.
Did it work fine previously on Koodo?
Anyone else out there have any ideas? @Perseus71 @Aerowinder @serio22 ?

I moved up north so I switched to Koodo about a month ago. It never worked on Koodo, but it also did not on Wind. This problem surfaced about half a year ago where I literally couldn't hear people. I was struggling cancelling my internet 3 months before I left. In between then and when I moved I had changed the piece (I've been building PC's for the majority of my life) I know I did the swap correctly. Sucks. It seems twice as loud reversing the phone (back of phone on my ear) or top of phone on ear, are most phones like this but at a higher volume? I wonder if the speaker relocated itself or flipped during reassembly. It does work better than when it did when I initially had problems but it's still not where it used to be, it's highly diminished.
Thanks for the help so far Doc.
Hmm.. have you checked if something is blocking the earpiece section? Or maybe try cleaning it. It would make sense why you can hear it better through the back but I don't know, that's the only thing I can think of right now that I haven't seen covered.. definitely doesn't sound like a software issue
@ chevymeister
Please try 2 things for me.
1. Use a good Bluetooth device for calls. See how the quality of sounds is over that one compared to the phone itself.
2. There are several known complaints with C-Rom's Volume issues. Some CM commits have borked it and those need to be reverted. From your point of view, please try another AOSP Rom such as Liquidsmooth or my personal SlimKat. Especially since you don't like Stock.
Make sure you do factory reset before flashing these roms. First thing you should do after flashing these roms is checking in-call volume before you restore any of your apps.

Come to think of it, ever since I got my bluetooth deck in my car my calls started acting up on my earpiece but that was awhile ago so maybe I'm just imagining it.. In call volume is fine using bt though compared to my in call. I'll try your rom a bit later tonight. I'll let you know. Ever since returning to stock my 15hr uptime turned into 3hr uptime. God I hate stock.

That's what I'm talkin about!
I installed slimkat a few minutes ago, call volume definitely didn't improve. I'm going to tear this phone apart this weekend and see what I find I guess. This is depressing. I guess trying to be optimistic at least I'm off that stock battery sucking abomination. Haha.
Quit hating on stock guys, I got 2 days on a single charge right now on stock with 1:13hr screen time
But I'll admit I haven't used it heavily but I got similar results as you guys on aosp/cm when this was my main phone
I think each OS just has a particular way it likes to be held. If it doesn't like the way you are handling it, it takes its revenge by sucking up your battery!
Can't think of any other reason why TW is great for some and only cm/aosp for others!
Just a theory! Lol!
Sorry for going OT, couldn't help it!

Naw, worst thing would be it won't boot. It probably wouldn't even do that, person just wouldn't have service.

(Original thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1091382)
I'm glad to see a small thread regarding this kernel. I'm thinking of flashing this mainly to get the BLN lights for notifications. I started reading the 300 plus threads and gave up, used to reading and research but wow!!
I'm used to flashing, came from Epic and loved Odin. However, with the Nexus, I tried to unlock bootloader, used GSM unknowingly, and got brick. Took me 2 days as early adopter to figure out how to fix (found Samsung Simple DL720 and Odin),
fixed and finally unlocked and rooted. But now hesitant to load since many Nexus
items are not referenced well.
Thank goodness yours is, so my quesions are - should I use cf for better battery?
I am stock, will stay stock for now, so if I want to revert, can I use cwm with backup to go back if there are problems?
I'm also hesitating to flash roms, haven't seen anything from anyone I'm familiar with - loved ACS team and pfmedic - their development, help and response was outstanding, so when they develop, I will go there. So if and when that happens,
would I then flash the kernel for non-standard phones?
Thanks for the advice, the unlock mess just stressed me out - and I did find out it truly voids warranty at my Service Center - they blackballed me, so I cancelled insurance on all phones since I can hack/fix any of the other Androids we have. This is just new and I'm on learning curve.
Welcome to the nexus bandwagon. The current set up I have is kushdecks rom(its basically cm7 with gingerbread launcher) netarchys cfs 1.3.0 kernel. You will also need to flash Google apps. It is very stable, fast, good battery life, you can use cm7 themes and overclock. But if you want something light and stable try open soju it comes with zeal launcher and netarchys kernel out of the box. Good luck.

this is why I want to try the kernel first. My phone is running fantastic. Actually getting almost 2 days on battery, unlocked, rooted. So in that case, I am hesitant to change anything, really just trying to get the bln for notifications working. I read some get better battery life, so this would be g great, hers not so.
If I flash, not good for me, how do I get backck to stock? Any file for stock kernel I need that I can Odin like modems on epic? Go back from backup? I really don't want to go back with the Samsung binaries and have to re root, I didn't do well wit h fastboot.
I also like pure gb and want to see what updates come thru, especially for/ the radio.
Will kernel change let these come thru? I always hacked and used rams before that had updates, so not sure on this

That is the easiest way to get back to stock. I dropped my two week old phone and used that and fastboot oem lock to get it completely back to stock. It took longer to download the file then it did to return the phone to stock.
2 days on battery?! Are you not using it? I was getting 20 hours with the phone stock for the one day I left it unrooted and I get the same with Nets kernel and CM7.
I go up and down in usage, just got a new Asus Transformer so playing with it for online things, down to using Nexus for phone, messaging (3 kids so use it), and checking email. But at night, having close to 50% left in good service area.
On weekends, we are at end of service, so using Roam Control with still poor service, maybe 2 bars, 1x, and still have 30% left. My Epic (without R.C.) didn't make it. So I am considering this excellent, best phone I have ever had running, and have never left a phone stock for these reasons!!
That is why I am hesitant to do anything to it. I always want to try things, then have to spend time tweaking, fixing, or removing what doesn't work good. I just do not like fastboot, not comfortable enough to like using it, so don't want to go there when my main purpose is to be BLN and keep or improve battery. Also my stock Nexus beats my old Epic on ACS, pfmidnight on speed and service, unbelievable.
If I make a backup of current, flash kernel, it acts up, can't I just use backup to go back to stock or do I have to reflash something else?

Yes, you can root the phone and install a custom recovery and make a nand backup. You can always revert to that if the new kernel isn't what you like.
Thank you, and pushed the button. I am unlocked, rooted, backed up and stock. I don't want to use fastboot to erase everything, nor Odin with Samsung Simple DL;720 (that was my lifesaver) just to change back from kernel.
Like I said, once I was rooted and running on Epic and earlier phones, no looking back because I would do anything to get rid of Sprint's timeframes, crap, speed, etc.
But loving Google and want to keep OTA's coming for awhile since I haven't seen any roms I'm crazy about.
So will flash kernel and see what happens. Just can't live with any worse battery, and sometimes shouldn't try to fix what isn't broken, but want the blinking led buttons bad enough to change.

You can try different roms and nand back as well. I'm running CM7, wouldn't run anything else. 90% of the roms out there are based off of it anyway.
I'm going to try it today while on drive, see what happens for the weekend. As long as battery doesn't tank, I will be happy especially know I can simply use backup to revert
As far as roms go, I have always stuck with certain developers due to trust and service - we all know what problems arise with roms, and the newer they are the more little things need tweaked. Therefore, being unfamiliar with any of the developers, I'm not changing anything. I have never looked into cm7, know they are an excellent, excellent team, but they developed for phones I have never carried, so when I see things like nightlies, I do not want to maintain and fix, I
just stay away!!

fordmanck,
I did install the kernel for the weekend, actually used more battery than stock, and this was at vacation home, edge of service, which was unexpected but where I wanted to test since service for me is the most crucial (meaning I have run out of bars and batteries too many times to count).
Also, the primary reason for conversion was to use BLN for notifications. It did not work on my phone, no idea why, so going back to stock for now. I am actually shocked at the battery I get, best on any phone ever, and yes, I use it.
Did look into cm7 roms, I know I will play and do this, I'm just tired of being early adopter and dealing, meaning maintaining, with issues. That is where many of the Nexus S 4g's are. I couldn't find a cm7 rom, when I tapped Nexus s 4g, gave a lot
of choices. I do not want to use nightlies, but only a stable one, so when I find one, will give it a shot.
Thanks for your help, I used backup and am where I was before trying the kernel.
I actually received a loss of service, which I have never EVER experienced when on stock. I was on ViperROM with that kernel thats supposed to HELP the LOS issue. So no matter what any of you say now in the threads (As there seems to be back and fourth about this) I believe that the rooting...the custom roms...and or the kernels HAVE to have something to do with it. i was stock until about 2 days ago with no LOS and now ive had one. Pretty much confirms for me.

You think that Sprint would admit to a problem that is actually the fault of hackers screwing with their phone? Come on man.
I had LOS 3 times the first day I had this phone... it wasn't rooted until day 4.
I trust developers on this site that clearly have stated LOS is not caused by rooting
http://www.androidpolice.com/2011/0...bug-on-some-devices-and-sprint-is-not-amused/
It is more than likely that, because the LOS issue lies in both the modem and kernel, changing either one of those can cause the problem to be exacerbated and that's why you are having this issue now, and not before.

Agree..........
I believe it mostly has to do with the source the developers used. Stock kernels are fine but the crappy source Sammy gave is not why is the stock kernel on the phone. I believe that is what is causing it.

I dont see anywhere that sprint has admited to anything 0_o (surely not that link with a screenshot of some forums post). but anyway, I SAID , root or custom roms or kernels meaning i think it MUST have something to do with being NON stock. there was no reason for you to hone in on root.
Non-Stock -- maybe ... Root doesn't seem to make a difference though. I'm still on stock rom but with root. I have never had LOS. It's the main reason I haven't switched to one of the awesome looking roms that are out there. Above all, I need the phone to work to make calls.
I hope whatever it is, it's fixed in the update!

Also to be "non-stock" you have to have been rooted/custom binary... so...yeah...
OP, flash the stock pulled kernel and rejoice. It will be no more a problem than when you were stock. Even if you get LOS occasionally still.... It will be no more than if you hadn't rooted.
I got them before rooting, kernels built from samsungs source are just far more prone. Period.

My E4GT is completely stock (never rooted or flashed) and I had HORRIBLE LoS issues early on. I was dropping signal once every hour or two. I called Sprint CS and they had me clear my data profile and re-update it. Been over a week since clearing/updating my profile and no LoS since.
So based on my experience, it has nothing to do with root or ROM.
You're never going to be able to convince the vocal crowd here on XDA of the obvious fact that being on a non-stock kernel has something to do with getting LOS.
There are hundreds of people with the exact same experience as you, go to custom kernel = LOS, stock kernel = no LOS. This has done nothing to convince these people.
It's made much worse by the fact that XDA is overrun by newbs these days. I've seen people saying they get LOS on stock kernel, and then I ask them what the symptoms are and they just say they get no bars on the signal, which sucks and all but is completely different from the circle with a slash through it custom kernel LOS. Then, the mob here points at the person's post and says, look even stock kernel gets LOS.
I've given up trying to argue with them.

As I have said before this is not just on this phone. The Photon 4G is seeing this issue as well. And the info you just mentioned was passed on to the Motorola Photon forum by me last week and a few Photon owners have done the clear and update and ran two days without reboot/radio lockup. I left the Photon due to this very issue that occurred on my Photon two to ten times a day.
Also I am on the Touch now and rooted using the odex with stock kernel and only one LOS the first day I rooted over 4 days ago. So I am pretty happy that is has not occurred anymore then that.
Ditto here. Stock since day 1 without a single LOS, rooted the other day and got a LOS circle with a line through it, within 5 hours. These are just observations. That's on the LoS kernel, which I love otherwise. Battery life seems to be better.

Um, that was exactly the symptom I got. I even described it right here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=18573252&postcount=39
A circle with at line thru it instead of strength bars and my lock screen said "Searching for signal..."
I'm only trying to share my experience in the hopes that someone can find the cause. People are saying they see it when they root/flash, and I'm saying I've see it even tho I've never done either. I don't understand what's with the hostility here.

No, it's more appropriate to say that you're never going to convince people that WANT to believe something that it's wrong...even if developers and Sprint themselves have clearly stated it's not true.
I experienced LOS before rooting.
andygallo experienced it before rooting.
My brother experiences LOS and is unrooted/stock.
9000 others have experienced LOS with a completely stock phone.
Developers have clearly stated it's a problem with the kernel/modem firmware and not caused by rooting or custom binaries.
Sprint has acknowledged that they, and Samsung, are aware of the issue and are working on it and have clearly stated that it has nothing to do with rooting/custom kernel/ROMs.
What more do you people need?
I don't know why it's so important for you guys to keep trying to peddle the debunked idea that it's rooting or something related.
It has nothing to do with rooting or custom ROMs/Kernels.
Yeah I don't really know how people can refute that it seems to have a lot to do with rooting/kernels/etc.
I had the phone for 2 weeks stock, not a single LOS. Rooted it, had one within a half hour, and one every hour on the dot for the 3 days after I rooted trying every conceivable rom selection/kernel choice.
I then went back to stock and haven't had a single LOS since.
I guess all are different, but there seems to be quite the correlation to me with rooting and getting the LOS.
My 2 cents

I can refute it because it happened on my completely stock (never rooted or flashed) phone. I believe you when you say that you saw it after you rooted, so I don't understand why you refute my observations (or anyone elses for that matter)?
I'm not saying that rooting/flashing doesn't bring about this issue, I'm just not convinced that it is THE cause. Rooting/flashing might just TRIGGER the issue.
I am starting to think it may be some sort of issue between loading a new ROM (any ROM) and the existing data profile. That would explain why when you revert, the LoS issue goes away, since ROM and profile are now back "sync".
I think anyone rooting/flashing that has LOS should try clearing and updating their data profile and see if it helps, since it helped me with my phone.
Dunno why my stock one would have it tho, maybe it was upgraded from a previous build? This better not be a refurb.
This is just me thinking out loud, so do whatever, I just want to help isolate this issue (even tho my LOS hasn't come back after the profile update).
I've tried everything to induce LOS, I flashed every damn kernel and rom available and still nothing. My daily drive takes me through areas with no service and areas with roaming. The signal alert app I have installed goes freaking crazy beeping when I connect and disconnect from service. And not 1 Los. I call BS blaming it on rooting and kernels exclusively, hell I'd be more willing to believe it's hardware related (I'm sure its not). This phone may have a crap radio in it but it tries like hell to always give me something to work with and I really can't complain.

Now This is where I stand:
Cannot boot into Recovery
Cannot boot into Download Mode
Cannot flash anything using Odin
No button combo's help get into anything
Phone will not boot normaly
The only 2 things I have yet to try:
A MicroUSB Jig (Which is in the mail as I type this)
A ROM that could possibly be loaded using Heimdall
What is a brother to do!!
Don't think they have any support for the T-Mobile version of the SGS2. Think you flashed CM7 for a different SGS2.
Um dude I hate to be the one to tell you this but that version was for the international gs2, not the tmo one. You're pretty much hard bricked.

What don't you people get? I put it in download mode and this is what happened. I didn't even get to the point of installing a custom recovery in order to installing a custom ROM. This happened right out of the box. so version numbers mean nothing cause nothing was loaded on it. I'll take this up with T-mobile cause its obv something with the phone since I DID NOT LOAD **** ONTO IT.
I understand that this version of Cyanogen is not supported for the T989 however I did not even get to that point to its irrelevant.
*EDIT* But yes I would have ****ed it up regardless if I didn't fully read everything before starting *EDIT*

Okay, sorry I misunderstood man but either way you're a bit SoL. How do you intend to explain the situation to T-Mobile regarding why they should replace your phone "I was in the process of voiding my warranty but couldn't get far enough into it so you should give me a new one so I can do all the stuff you don't want me to do"? Good luck mate.
FYI This is the first report of this happening to someone, many people have used the current ODIN root method without having this happen.
After reading what kenvan19 said, then going back to read this, with the Rebecca Black instrumental playing in the background...... Lmmfao!! This is crazy comedy lollll!

Odin will pick it up on Com port 6 but will not flash anything. And I don't have to explain to t-mobile what I was going to do. This phone is 1 day old.... I have at least 14 days to return it. Exp. if its defected.
Just got off the phone with T-mobile. I told them what I did...
I took the phone out of the box, plugged it into the charger and after 5 minutes looked like the picture (Yellowish Green)
she transferred me to the technical department, once I was there I explained what happened again and the second I said yellowish green screen the guy said STOP. This is a "Known issue with this device and Samsung is aware of it" I am in the process of getting a replacement.
**EDIT** T-mobile Tech informed me of a faulty display crystal that can sometimes "crack" due to overheating. even tho it was plugged in for 5 minutes, it could have been a bad crystal **EDIT**

Well look at all the good things that came from this, you get a brand new device and you found another known issue to add to the list to be avoided and fixed lol
Very true very true. that's what you get for being a tester..
This bad crystal...is it a 'dark' crystal, or more like a crystal ball?
It was more like a dark crystal... like the movie. Took me forever to get my hands on it
Well atleast you found a problem early and not after the 14 days
Ill tell ya what we don't get is a bricked phone. No need to get nasty with members especially when you seek help.

***UPDATE***
First.... I'd like to apologize to everyone when I was a little rude. As you know when getting a new device you expect it to work right out of the box and this one did not. It definitely put a hole in my day. So for the attitude I am sorry for.
Second...I have received the new phone. This one seems to be holding up alot better then the last. So far here is what i have done.
Rooted the device using Odin (My Fav tool of all)
Installed Custom CWM Recovery
Installed Superuser ( Had to try this 4 times to finally get it to install, known issue I guess) However it did end up installing.
All from the following procedure: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1311194
Now I am successfully ROOTED and running CWM recovery. Looking at Rom's now. Anyone have any suggestions?
***EDIT***
Just installed EaglesBlood, I'll test this for about a week. If I see anything out of the normal I'll update. However on Stock ROM Unrooted I ran a 3100 benchmark. With this Eaglesblood ROM I just ran one at 2195
Update:
Took off EaglesBlood, it was not as fast/smooth as I expected. Currently testing convrgence and so far.... WOW.

Great idea... first question here... i have never rooted a phone or done anything like that to it... i've always wanted to get into it, but i just never could get up the nuts to do it. funny because i've messed with and modified every other electronic device and pre-android phone i've ever owned... just got scared with android, i guess partly because i cannot afford to have to buy another 700 dollar device...
anyways, i want to go ahead and root my sgs3 on wind mobile, but i have no idea how. can anyone point me to some help... i mean super basic noob help? like a walkthrough? i want to put on CM9 if i can, and whatever rom would be a good one for daily use... i don't really know what different roms are going to get me even, and honestly for the most part the phone works great, but there are a few minor things (like google wallet) that i want access to and can't have without rooting... so i figure i'll go for it
also, will it void my warranty to do this, or can i revert back to stock if i have a warranty issue and then take it in for replacement? thanks for any and all help!
*please ignore*
hot temperature?
Are any of you guys noticing your Wind GS3 being very hot? My battery temperature is at about 35C to 40C after a few minutes browsing or playing games (though it's ~30C when it's not doing much). Feels reasonably uncomfortable to hold while it's hot ... Not sure if the phone is defective or if it's because Wind's (generally) weak signal strength forces the Radio/CPU to crank up a notch or two ...

I'll see if I can come up with something, but just wanted to say that I'm with Wind and I've been able to root it, flash the FreeGS3 (currently R3 right now) ROM and Trinity kernel. Also installed CPU Sleeper and other CPU apps. ~20 hours of battery life (since 7:30am), listened to music at work all day, played games on the train home, wi-fi on at home).
Also used Triangle Away to set the flash count back to 0

and at last your question here i found a thread that will help you with everything so your not going on a mad man hunt for this information now you can pick whatever rom you want but they have a couple on here but ill have another link for some new roms that are more stable.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1723175
so here are a few roms that you can take a stab picking and choosing which you think would like best
CapRom Turbo | AROMA |

and hopefully we will see CM9 show up a bit more soon but all I can find is nightlies for now but i'm sure as we pass a month of this phone being out we will see better roms come out with it .....was kinda hoping for hellfire to move on over but soon enough i'm sure cause he is a great dev for the G2X aka optimus 2x
but for now those are the 2 big ones that i can see and of course as the phone progresses it will get more roms that are better out there
ok, cool, i'm going to read through those links
in the mean time, can anyone point me in the direction of a page, or just explain it, that tells me what the hell a kernel does compared to a rom? what does each of them do, and what does changing each of them get me?
i'm super new to android and honestly, this is getting to be so much for me that i'm getting tempted to just say screw it and not risk messing up my phone that i bought out and paid 700 dollars for by the time i was said and done....
i really do want to get into modding it, but i'm not going to risk screwing it up completely if it's a significant risk, and if i can't get warranty coverage for it if i do mess it up...
any help on clearing up what a kernel does compared to a rom, etc, would be awesome
also what benefits does the FREESG3 rom give me? will i lose out on a lot of the cool stock samsung features? i know some of them are stupid, but i honestly like some of the other ones, like the stock calender and a few others....camera, i dunno what else but i know i like em. lots of the other samsung stuff is crap for sure, but i've dealt with it thus far. also, if i flash a new rom, will i lose all of my existing calender entries or can i back them up and restore them to the new (if it's new) calender in the new rom?
holy *phew* hope that relieves my n00bie question diarrhea for the next 3 minutes...

okay for the most part the kernel doesn't matter most roms have their own kernels but some kernels will allow you to overclock your phone and yes you will lose you current calender entries and technically you will lose your warranty on your phone but the benifits are you can get much better battery life and speed out of your phone realistically but its all up to you on wether you decide to go through with it or not but i like what i got with the s3 personally optimus x2 i had to put custom roms on there cause without it my phone would be ****

well they said that it could cause issues but my old optimus 2x aka g2x worked fine with tmobile roms and btw GS3 is T999 where as the Canadian version is T999V and should have no issues from what i can see if im not mistaken the optimus 2x up here was P990DW where as the tmo version was T990 but the roms and everything were the same for both.
where as for the calendar its prob a loss and yes you install gapps separately but just follow the instruction and it will lead you through everything safely but here is another link just in case

If you would not like to read this, I admit its size is a bit unsettling, then please jump to the bottom in big bold letters and see if there is some passive way of helping.
But seriously, it's not that bad of a read. :fingers-crossed:
Hey guys, hows it goin?
I Know this looks long but bear with me. I've made it
Enjoyable.....
To warn you before hand.... I AM A NOOB OOOOOoooOOOoooHhhHHHhhh.......
I'm new to forums, I'm new to roots, but I'm not new to technology. Help me and I will be able to figure things out.
If you find yourself saying "Hey ya i know whats goin on hea!" help me with this, and I will Love you mercilessly.
So I'm going to give you all of the details that I can about my phone and its history.
I can imagine that maybe the solution to my problem is somewhArrr on the XDA but i just cant find a thread with my exact problems and history and I am just going to throw this up here and hope that someone can walk me through this hard time.
Alright, Ive never jumped into anything without a little bit of research first BUT like my legos, when I was a kid I just did it without reading the manual. I just kind of looked at the end result and just did it. Terrible thing to do, I know, but I'm a pretty clever guy. I usually find everything out no matter how long it takes me. But this time I fear i have taken a road that I cant really go back.
Ok ok I'll start. I got my Note II at least a year ago (pretty sure my warranty is over) and a little while ago I really realized what power my phone held and I had to have it rooted.
So I did research and I rooted with the all powerful Auto Odin.
I have a friend who professionally works/jailbreaks/fixes all things Apple. A long time ago he rooted my Nook.
He knows his **** and he's educated. He knows Titanium backup, CWM, SuperUser, ya know, The Basics....
He saw me working on my phone one day and said "Oh i know Cyanogen mod. Its awesome!"
So at the time I had Rom toolbox (Pro) and was just window shopping different Roms. I liked a couple like Carbon, but I just decided to stick with CM. I picked a nightly mod because I'm all about the looks
So I stuck with that for a while but it wasn't enough. I missed my multi-window, s note, etc.
Then I heard about....
JEDI X.....
Must have...... (Jedi.... I have chubs for you......)
|||||| SIDE NOTE ||||||||Around this time I got a 64gb micro SD. And AGAIN, Research/deadlinks/descriptionsAndXDAThreadsThatNeverAppliedPerfectlytoMe/FailureTo FindDownloads&ModDescriptionsCommentsAlwaysTalkedAbout/nonfreeServices and other stuff.
The card worked but never how I wanted to and my Internal was always running out of space. Couldn't partition. Couldn't get app2sd to work.
Jedi would Flip it so Internal and SD were swapped but sometimes i would get traded my 64 into a 10 and **** was con-FUZE-ing.
If I see the light after this tunnel..... Simple and honest help would be greatly appreciated.

My first-firstJedi was a failure. GApps didnt work and other stuff. And no SU, CWM, Rom Toolbox. Downloading apps was hard but I got a couple. It was Hard. AAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!! I used my SD card to quickly add .Zips, .Img, and other stuff I needed for bootloading. So I got it and when I installed it (btw I'm still not 100% on what Flashing is) I Did not wipe because I was afraid of losing my data. I never knew It would be Dirty Flashing. It was Jedi 19 I believe, or maybe 18... Well then It started to Boot loop. Info of "No root" on bootloader would cause more Bootlooping upon Install. Even after more Odin. Then waves of Battery pulls, button holds, Usb links, Odin re-roots. Eventually I wiped Enough times and re-installed Jedi and it began to work again. Some things never really worked so I did research and research. Which was always filled with links that that eventually ended in the same place they started. Or Downloads that were either lost in time or locked. Then available .exe files that never worked like 2nas and other stuff. Tried Odin again and again. Other Odin .tar file downloads again and again.
I can find everything I ever used and compile a list if it would help.
Because of all of this I experienced sleepless nights, filed with protein bars, X-files, Adderall, and a whole war brought on by my phone against me and my Lappy. Guys, I miss the taste of Sunlight. I miss my Gf. Poor thing. She emails me quite often. She really hasn't heard anything form me because.....

SIM card cannot be read. I about lost my ****. But not immediately because I hadn't noticed it. At first I was celebrating. "Yay! Beloved Jedi! I Finally have you! FN Notifications you're so sexy! (Being A HUGE Bioshock Enthusiast, Portholes is my favorite theme) Icon changer! Sweet! Jedi Tricks! Yah!" But then I noticed I couldn't get data. At first I was fine. Nothing could touch me. I could fix anything. So I gracefully took out my sim, cleaned it, and stuck it back, Nothing. Reboot. Nothing. Recovery. Nothing. Then,

Nothing worked and I fear I have only been picking at old wounds and perhaps making it worse. Idk. but other than that everything is perfect.
Then last night I realized. Duh! must be the SIM card! ill just get a new one! went down to mah At&t store and a brother hooked me up. My mom is the only authorized user so I couldn't switch my number right there but I went home, Called customer support, fixed it, set up my new card, read him the digits, read em back, that was good, then he said it should work right then. Hung up. Powered down. Took out old one, put in new one. Happy/psyched. Get to talk to people again and be a human once more. Turned that sucker on and

DAMMITs followed by research..... and research..... corn nuts and tea..... and research..... found a couple of promising leads though. then I Lost them or they didn't work. Lots of people said stuff like "Lost it" "Bricked" "New Phone" Sent it in" "...Guys in texas fixed radio....' "Kernel" "stock" "unroot" "nothing worked" and worst of all "I think it's funny that no body noticed that this question was from 2 months ago" *Shivers* please don't make me wait that long. And i found a couple of "Ya I've seen people get helped and make it through this". Hope is a dangerous thing people.
So now I'm going to upload pictures and information about my phone
This is my basic "About Device"

I can't imagine that any of this is necessary but you've got to remember I am not as Skillz as some of you guys so its just insurance.
This is where I am at now. I will be doing little to no work on my phone to keep it as close to this list as possible.
I would love comments out the WAZOO. Anything helps. I really don't want to take "Get a new phone" or anything of that nature because 1.) Money related options aren't really, well, an option. 2.) I hate giving up.
All info is good info
If you know how to fix this
I will kiss you
If you know another way around this, such as reliable means of WiFi communications
ummmmm I'll thank you?
If you can refer me to a specialist in my area-ish
If you can refer me to a website/forum admin
If you can give me contacts/emails/numbers
If you know how much At&t would charge me to sent my phone in
If you know if At&t will refuse/charge extra because my phone is rooted could you tell me and guide on how I may Un-Root my phone for fear of Bricking it myself without proper knowledge?
I will forever be in your debt
Anything you need from me I would love to do anything. If you need more info/pictures. Questions. 1-on-1 emailing. I will be checking this regularly.
Think of us as children on a playground. I have fallen and scraped my knee. This is the first time this has happened to me and I don't know what to do. And I'm a bit afraid. If you're a student like me go get one of the "Teachers". If you're a teacher. Help would be awesome.\
I hope that if this thread is helpful towards me, it may be full of information towards someone else in the same position in the future. So please.
LINKS LINKS LINKS LINKS. (if necessary) Oh and ya, I know I must sound really pathetic. I just like doing things right.
Thank You,

Bro...too long. I skimmed, didn't catch anything about you attempting to go back to stock rom/kernel. So...did you? At this point, getting things to work may corrupt your install more than you may immediately notice. Start from the beginning, if your SIM card works there, it's a software issue. If not, it's a hardware issue that we will most likely not be able to fix.
Ya I know I just have a hard time knowing when to quit. Thanks for being quick. Um originally no-
Didn't know to.
But I couldn't get my sticky fingers away from my phone and now its worse.
Now I'm not necessarily looking for help.... i guess because i tried some more things today and now its Soft-Bricked ( i think).
I only get down loader and kies firmware screen. I can hear my comp find my phone through a notification. But android toolkit cant find it, and today I finally noticed my custom binary download count...... 8. I'm really not proud of myself.
Anyways i guuuueeeessss im still looking for help even though odin/conventional stock roms never "pass" anymore.
But i guess maybe i just need help finding what step i should take next. thanks

Happens to mine everyrime trying to flash dn3

I had precisely the same thing happen to me the first time I flashed a rom. I didn't know about all the different versions and flashed a rom for the 7100 rather than the 317 and it stopped detecting my sim. What I had to do was flash the stock rom, then flash the new custom rom (that you did research on and it is designed for your device). I am running CM10.2 now on my i317 with full functionality.
