Great idea... first question here... i have never rooted a phone or done anything like that to it... i've always wanted to get into it, but i just never could get up the nuts to do it. funny because i've messed with and modified every other electronic device and pre-android phone i've ever owned... just got scared with android, i guess partly because i cannot afford to have to buy another 700 dollar device...
anyways, i want to go ahead and root my sgs3 on wind mobile, but i have no idea how. can anyone point me to some help... i mean super basic noob help? like a walkthrough? i want to put on CM9 if i can, and whatever rom would be a good one for daily use... i don't really know what different roms are going to get me even, and honestly for the most part the phone works great, but there are a few minor things (like google wallet) that i want access to and can't have without rooting... so i figure i'll go for it
also, will it void my warranty to do this, or can i revert back to stock if i have a warranty issue and then take it in for replacement? thanks for any and all help!
*please ignore*
hot temperature?
Are any of you guys noticing your Wind GS3 being very hot? My battery temperature is at about 35C to 40C after a few minutes browsing or playing games (though it's ~30C when it's not doing much). Feels reasonably uncomfortable to hold while it's hot ... Not sure if the phone is defective or if it's because Wind's (generally) weak signal strength forces the Radio/CPU to crank up a notch or two ...

I'll see if I can come up with something, but just wanted to say that I'm with Wind and I've been able to root it, flash the FreeGS3 (currently R3 right now) ROM and Trinity kernel. Also installed CPU Sleeper and other CPU apps. ~20 hours of battery life (since 7:30am), listened to music at work all day, played games on the train home, wi-fi on at home).
Also used Triangle Away to set the flash count back to 0

that is odd cause my phone sits in around 27 on average so its never hot to the touch so it might be a defect but i would go in and have that checked out in any case

and at last your question here i found a thread that will help you with everything so your not going on a mad man hunt for this information now you can pick whatever rom you want but they have a couple on here but ill have another link for some new roms that are more stable.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1723175
so here are a few roms that you can take a stab picking and choosing which you think would like best
CapRom Turbo | AROMA |
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1750221
TEAM SONIC'S FREEGS3 R4_U1
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1750270
and hopefully we will see CM9 show up a bit more soon but all I can find is nightlies for now but i'm sure as we pass a month of this phone being out we will see better roms come out with it .....was kinda hoping for hellfire to move on over but soon enough i'm sure cause he is a great dev for the G2X aka optimus 2x
but for now those are the 2 big ones that i can see and of course as the phone progresses it will get more roms that are better out there
ok, cool, i'm going to read through those links
in the mean time, can anyone point me in the direction of a page, or just explain it, that tells me what the hell a kernel does compared to a rom? what does each of them do, and what does changing each of them get me?
i'm super new to android and honestly, this is getting to be so much for me that i'm getting tempted to just say screw it and not risk messing up my phone that i bought out and paid 700 dollars for by the time i was said and done....
i really do want to get into modding it, but i'm not going to risk screwing it up completely if it's a significant risk, and if i can't get warranty coverage for it if i do mess it up...
any help on clearing up what a kernel does compared to a rom, etc, would be awesome
also what benefits does the FREESG3 rom give me? will i lose out on a lot of the cool stock samsung features? i know some of them are stupid, but i honestly like some of the other ones, like the stock calender and a few others....camera, i dunno what else but i know i like em. lots of the other samsung stuff is crap for sure, but i've dealt with it thus far. also, if i flash a new rom, will i lose all of my existing calender entries or can i back them up and restore them to the new (if it's new) calender in the new rom?
holy *phew* hope that relieves my n00bie question diarrhea for the next 3 minutes...

okay for the most part the kernel doesn't matter most roms have their own kernels but some kernels will allow you to overclock your phone and yes you will lose you current calender entries and technically you will lose your warranty on your phone but the benifits are you can get much better battery life and speed out of your phone realistically but its all up to you on wether you decide to go through with it or not but i like what i got with the s3 personally optimus x2 i had to put custom roms on there cause without it my phone would be ****

ok cool thanks for the help here...
so as far as calender stuff.... can i back it up and restore it, or am i hooped and just stuck losing it? since i have my google stuff, shouldn't it back it up for me? i know when i went from my optimus 2x (un modded) to my sgs3 i just signed into google and everything showed up... won't happen here though or what?
also.....i've been reading about people having to install gapps (google apps i'm guessing?) separately? what's the deal there... do i have to do that? thanks
one other thing i forgot to ask... i've had a few people tell me that, being on wind, i cannot use tmo roms etc like i used to be able to on other phones (apparently) but now it looks like those links above are all tmo roms... i'm confused... am i boing to bork up my phone if i put tmo stuff on it, or no? thanks

well they said that it could cause issues but my old optimus 2x aka g2x worked fine with tmobile roms and btw GS3 is T999 where as the Canadian version is T999V and should have no issues from what i can see if im not mistaken the optimus 2x up here was P990DW where as the tmo version was T990 but the roms and everything were the same for both.
where as for the calendar its prob a loss and yes you install gapps separately but just follow the instruction and it will lead you through everything safely but here is another link just in case

i still am looking for confirmation that people are just simply flashing tmo firmwares onto wind phonse.,.. it's all fine and dandy that it SHOULD work, but i'm in construction and my phone is my lifeline so i really can't risk it not working...
Yes one of the other users I'm this thread uses it on his phone so you should be okay where as for me I haven't done anything yet since I actually don't mind the stock Rom unlike my experience with the optimus 2x

If I was you and having these problems, the first thing I would do would be to run the RUU and get back to stock. Easiest way to find out if it's the Rom or the phone.
in ur settings to a factory reset
You are on a rooted phone and you are going to return it due to errors that might be a result of the root?
No root and I mean no ROOT is perfect and each phone can act differently. Try to reflash again and clear out all your data/cache and try it again.
Try another ROM just to see.
Yet another user error. This is YOUR fault. Heck they could report your to HTC if they didn't like you.
WoW just wow. You talk to me like I am the biggest noob on the forums.
For your information the root was fine for over 2 weeks and this just started last Friday. I had a launch evo and rooted it the first day it was available. Also I flashed back to stock ruu and had the same problem.
Maybe before you open your mouth and let the **** flow out ask yourself a simple question : Is my comment going to help or just make me look like an ass.
Also I would like to comment on the fact I am pretty good at phone jailbreaking and rooting. I know how to read guides and I have been doing this kind of stuff since the pocket pc's. I have never ran into a much ruder group then the people that posted on this topic. Heck even a rom dev talked to me nicer then you guys did when I asked about a project he hadn't worked on in months.
I have returned my EVO but haven't lost hope in you guys. Just let me know if you guys ever apply at my work so I can avoid you at all costs.
Note: This only applies to the ones that deserve it. Thanks for mentioning the stock RUU Roman G, and for mentioning the factory reset toenail78. I had already tried that but to no avail. Also note I even told the store I rooted the phone and flashed it back to stock and neither worked and they were just as puzzled as I was. I am not your 15 year old teenager, but thanks for treating me like one.
I'm still confused as to why anyone would ever return this phone except for physical damage(screen ripping off). Everything software based can be fixed. And its only been 2 weeks. In another 2 weeks, we'll probably have Gingerbread running on this thing. The devs here are simply just amazing. Hell i got these errors BEFORE i rooted. So I'm guessing it was just the network being raped by a new device. I haven't seen them for awhile now.

You asked people to make assumptions, so thanks for being so offended by it. You come here with an immature ultimatum, "Help me or I'm sending this back!" and give us no other information. Only your signature gives any information about your phone, "rooted." Now you fly off the handle and insult everyone.
Probably because your an apple fanboy and god hates you.
It has nothing to do with being a "noob" or "super cool neeto phone pro". I has to do with the ultimatum of returning a phone that you messed up.
Everything will be ok.

Yeah, I'd like to know where in your original post we could safely assume you knew what you were doing. You gave absolutely NO information, except that you have no patience. This is a developer's forum, which means if you don't give out useful information that people can use to help you, they're going to assume you don't know what you're doing.
I simply asked if anyone knew about these errors. I didn't say fix them.
BTW if I was an Apple fanboy I would have preordered a iPhone 4 instead of the EVO. But sorry your way off on that lol. I am just a gadget person. My iPad and MacBook are for work and school. Heck if I wouldn't be getting so much for my student loan I would of never gotten either, well maybe the iPad because it was a great replacement for the iPhone.
I am going to stick with android, and going to go buy a Nexus One. I am thankful for your guys help, sorry if I offended anyone but it just struck a nerve. This is the reason I don't post on forums often for help. Anyways I will keep an eye on the EVO for future possible purchase. I guess when it came down to it, the screen issue (separation and faulty grounding), the meh battery life (I didn't say it was bad it was just sub par), the 30fps limit (which shows), and the poor service in my area were the downfalls for me with the EVO.
I hope you guys all have better luck then me and enjoy your great phone.
I love that your screen shots show the Evo battery as yellow. Thats the only color my battery ever is...
Im wondering why you didn't just exchange the phone for a new one if you suspected a hardware problem?

The screen separation isn't rampant, and a silly reason to dump the phone if you're not suffering from it.
I have a Nexus One and an EVO 4G. I also have every version of the iPhone from day 1, and should be receiving an iPhone 4 this afternoon if FedEx delivers as promised, so I can speak to each of these with some experience.
I think you'll be EXTREMELY disappointed in the Nexus One if you switch to it after having an EVO 4G. The Nexus One's screen is over-saturated and biased towards too much, I mean TOO MUCH, red. The camera puts a large pink blurred circle into every picture you take. The touch input is very flakey, regardless of ROM you use. It's almost impossible to type accurately on it unless you install Swype or ShapeWriter. It's extremely difficult to see the screen outdoors - I couldn't even get a podcast playing while walking to lunch the other day until I found a big shade tree to stand under. Battery life on the Nexus One is probably the worst of any phone I've ever owned, though that may be a network lack of signal issue (T-Mobile). Speaking of T-Mo, if you get T-Mobile version instead of AT&T you can look forward to lots of missed calls and lots of no 3G coverage areas.
The Nexus One has some great features, including the awesome speaker phone and noise canceling mic, a beautiful hardware design that puts even the legendary styling of iPhones to shame, and it fits great in your hand. And don't forget the fantastic ROMS by Cyanogen and Modaco, but if you're not happy with an EVO 4G I think we'll see you posting over in the Nexus One sections soon enough with some ultimatum about "fix the touchscreen or I'm returning this phone" or some other such issue.
Good luck with whatever phone you pick, because with Android phones, there's ALWAYS some glitch or flaw with the phone that will annoy you, and there's ALWAYS a much better phone coming out next month or two (Droid, then N1, then Desire, then EVO, and upcoming Galaxy S). iPhones have issues too, but at least with your iPhones you don't have to worry about a new better model but once per year - but then you have far fewer options for hacking and the latest hardware. ;-)

I know it's too late to help in this instance, but in the future try asking your questions over at ppcgeeks. They play nicer over there. Most of us here on xda seem to have personality problems and can't play too well with others. You said you might try a nexus one. I have one of those too. I prefer the Evo hands down... If I were you I would go back to Sprint and buy another Evo, You will be much more satisfied down the road. Don't let these folks get under your skin!!
i know its a late reply but ill post anyway. i had the exact same problem. a sprint tech helped me out and called me throughout the day to see if it was working. basically he helped me do a reset of the phone to attempt a fix of the low reception. after that we had to grab a tower and because the tower was down i was getting the exact same problem as OP.
he noted that the phone couldnt be processed in the system yet because of the tower so he would call me and let me know if it went through or not. and if it did to continue troubleshooting it.
i kept on trying all day and it went through a couple of minutes before he called me as if he knew i got through. then it was fixed.
dont remember what we did because we entered a bunch of numbers in the dialer, but i know we reset everything and updated everything. it was durring the update that was causing the problems and recurring errors like what the OP had.
if its rooted id say update but i dont know which not to update since you could lose root. i would unroot, run all updates and register phone automatically and if it works then root. if not call tech and see if it can be registered automatically somehow. when it works, root.
just posting this for future reference because i didnt see anyone mention something like this here
See official thread here.
Hmmm... thanks for posting this but I'm not sure how long this will stay up. It may be better and safer to split it into two posts eliminating a chance for someone flashing the wrong kernel.
However, your choice

Naw, worst thing would be it won't boot. It probably wouldn't even do that, person just wouldn't have service.

I'm glad to see a small thread regarding this kernel. I'm thinking of flashing this mainly to get the BLN lights for notifications. I started reading the 300 plus threads and gave up, used to reading and research but wow!!
I'm used to flashing, came from Epic and loved Odin. However, with the Nexus, I tried to unlock bootloader, used GSM unknowingly, and got brick. Took me 2 days as early adopter to figure out how to fix (found Samsung Simple DL720 and Odin),
fixed and finally unlocked and rooted. But now hesitant to load since many Nexus
items are not referenced well.
Thank goodness yours is, so my quesions are - should I use cf for better battery?
I am stock, will stay stock for now, so if I want to revert, can I use cwm with backup to go back if there are problems?
I'm also hesitating to flash roms, haven't seen anything from anyone I'm familiar with - loved ACS team and pfmedic - their development, help and response was outstanding, so when they develop, I will go there. So if and when that happens,
would I then flash the kernel for non-standard phones?
Thanks for the advice, the unlock mess just stressed me out - and I did find out it truly voids warranty at my Service Center - they blackballed me, so I cancelled insurance on all phones since I can hack/fix any of the other Androids we have. This is just new and I'm on learning curve.
Welcome to the nexus bandwagon. The current set up I have is kushdecks rom(its basically cm7 with gingerbread launcher) netarchys cfs 1.3.0 kernel. You will also need to flash Google apps. It is very stable, fast, good battery life, you can use cm7 themes and overclock. But if you want something light and stable try open soju it comes with zeal launcher and netarchys kernel out of the box. Good luck.

this is why I want to try the kernel first. My phone is running fantastic. Actually getting almost 2 days on battery, unlocked, rooted. So in that case, I am hesitant to change anything, really just trying to get the bln for notifications working. I read some get better battery life, so this would be g great, hers not so.
If I flash, not good for me, how do I get backck to stock? Any file for stock kernel I need that I can Odin like modems on epic? Go back from backup? I really don't want to go back with the Samsung binaries and have to re root, I didn't do well wit h fastboot.
I also like pure gb and want to see what updates come thru, especially for/ the radio.
Will kernel change let these come thru? I always hacked and used rams before that had updates, so not sure on this

That is the easiest way to get back to stock. I dropped my two week old phone and used that and fastboot oem lock to get it completely back to stock. It took longer to download the file then it did to return the phone to stock.
2 days on battery?! Are you not using it? I was getting 20 hours with the phone stock for the one day I left it unrooted and I get the same with Nets kernel and CM7.
I go up and down in usage, just got a new Asus Transformer so playing with it for online things, down to using Nexus for phone, messaging (3 kids so use it), and checking email. But at night, having close to 50% left in good service area.
On weekends, we are at end of service, so using Roam Control with still poor service, maybe 2 bars, 1x, and still have 30% left. My Epic (without R.C.) didn't make it. So I am considering this excellent, best phone I have ever had running, and have never left a phone stock for these reasons!!
That is why I am hesitant to do anything to it. I always want to try things, then have to spend time tweaking, fixing, or removing what doesn't work good. I just do not like fastboot, not comfortable enough to like using it, so don't want to go there when my main purpose is to be BLN and keep or improve battery. Also my stock Nexus beats my old Epic on ACS, pfmidnight on speed and service, unbelievable.
If I make a backup of current, flash kernel, it acts up, can't I just use backup to go back to stock or do I have to reflash something else?

Yes, you can root the phone and install a custom recovery and make a nand backup. You can always revert to that if the new kernel isn't what you like.
Thank you, and pushed the button. I am unlocked, rooted, backed up and stock. I don't want to use fastboot to erase everything, nor Odin with Samsung Simple DL;720 (that was my lifesaver) just to change back from kernel.
Like I said, once I was rooted and running on Epic and earlier phones, no looking back because I would do anything to get rid of Sprint's timeframes, crap, speed, etc.
But loving Google and want to keep OTA's coming for awhile since I haven't seen any roms I'm crazy about.
So will flash kernel and see what happens. Just can't live with any worse battery, and sometimes shouldn't try to fix what isn't broken, but want the blinking led buttons bad enough to change.

You can try different roms and nand back as well. I'm running CM7, wouldn't run anything else. 90% of the roms out there are based off of it anyway.
I'm going to try it today while on drive, see what happens for the weekend. As long as battery doesn't tank, I will be happy especially know I can simply use backup to revert
As far as roms go, I have always stuck with certain developers due to trust and service - we all know what problems arise with roms, and the newer they are the more little things need tweaked. Therefore, being unfamiliar with any of the developers, I'm not changing anything. I have never looked into cm7, know they are an excellent, excellent team, but they developed for phones I have never carried, so when I see things like nightlies, I do not want to maintain and fix, I
just stay away!!

fordmanck,
I did install the kernel for the weekend, actually used more battery than stock, and this was at vacation home, edge of service, which was unexpected but where I wanted to test since service for me is the most crucial (meaning I have run out of bars and batteries too many times to count).
Also, the primary reason for conversion was to use BLN for notifications. It did not work on my phone, no idea why, so going back to stock for now. I am actually shocked at the battery I get, best on any phone ever, and yes, I use it.
Did look into cm7 roms, I know I will play and do this, I'm just tired of being early adopter and dealing, meaning maintaining, with issues. That is where many of the Nexus S 4g's are. I couldn't find a cm7 rom, when I tapped Nexus s 4g, gave a lot
of choices. I do not want to use nightlies, but only a stable one, so when I find one, will give it a shot.
Thanks for your help, I used backup and am where I was before trying the kernel.
I am running Syndicate Rom Frozen 1.2 with the Genocide kernel and cannot download any picture messages while on 3g. I have tried multiple messaging programs, cleared cache/date, etc. but nothing seems to be fixing the issue. I can, however, download them on Wifi. I have tried to turn off wifi and just use 3g as I understand that can cause issues, but it doesn't help. Any suggestions?!?!?

I would say ditch 1.2 its old there is no further development for it as of right now. You should at least b running gingerbread (hell a lot of us are on ice cream sandwich now, which also has BLUE in the rom) and if you want blue in a gingerbread touchwiz rom just pick a blue theme to put on top of whatever rom u pick I'm sure there is a few blue themes. Getting off froyo has other benefits as well like no ciq at all and other bug fixes, I'm assuming your modem is also ec05 which is also old and u should probably b on ei22 or el30.

I have an Evo and find flashing between roms much easier and the guys on the Q and A sections of those boards are actually helpful. So, one last time, can anyone address the issue or not?

All seven of your responses are identical, nothing like beating a dead horse. and all of them correct, yet you still want to run an out dated ROM that has NO support. Nobody is going to flash back to Froyo to diagnose and fix a problem for someone demanding it like we owe you something
I have an Evo and find flashing between roms much easier and the guys on the Q and A sections of those boards are actually helpful. and? 7 people promptly answered your question correctly on how to permanently fix your problem. If your evo buddies are so helpful (they're not http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1393443 ) ask them to fix your download issue for you for free. So you know how to flash a ROM easily on your evo, apply your expertise to the epic.
So, one last time, can anyone address the issue or not?
yeah I have the solution. It's not my fault if anything happens because of you not reading these instructions before you even touch your epic. Go find a qbking video.
Now shall we begin?
Download Odin, get any .tar from anywhere in XDA and place the .tar in the PDA section. Select repartition and reset f.time or whatever, and uncheck auto reboot.
Now plug your epic into the computer while the epic is in download mode.
Now click start in Odin and when the green progress bar gets half way, unplug the epic and bingo, you have a brick. Have a nice night.
Nothing to see here folks keep it moving.

Try booting a stock rom and going to settings>about phone> update prl, and your profile. 3g should work aftrwords.
Next use voice dialer in applications and say "open apn" and make sure default profile is active.

Well if we all say the same maybe u should listen!!!!!!!! Get rid of the old rom and move on to something that is actually supported these days, did u even look to see what modem you're on???? How is flashing roms any easier on an evo considering u can use rom manager for both of them?? That is if you have updated your wife's recovery, have u done that yet??? Seriously though update the rom as well as clockworkmod its not hard, we even have an official update to gingerbread from sprint so cut us some slack if were telling you to update when people who aren't rooted are light years ahead of you. If anything you were the one beating the dead horse because no matter how many times we told you a solution you insisted on another solution.

I think the real lesson here is -don't root or flash the wife's phone.
Chances are that she really doesn't give a **** about all this "cool" android stuff, and when something does go wrong she's not going to try to fix it herself, rather she will just blame you for screwing it up in the first place and then send you on a quest to fix it.
Why isn't she the one in here asking how to fix her problem?
My suggestion to fix "your" msg problem: I would just Odin her phone back to stock, let her epic take the ota updates, and then never touch the thing again.

Maybe I left out one key line. I have no interest in flashing another rom. If there is not a known fix for this, I will just move on and leave it as is. The entire process of flashing, odin, etc. beyond just simple zip flashes in CWM is more than I am willing to figure out right now and more complicated than the Evo recovery process. Plus in my brief experience, seems less reliable and consistent (only certain cords work, with certain phones on certain computers, etc. I don't want to take the time to learn more about it and fiddle with it because it's my wife's phone and I never have more than an hour or so to work on it. Thanks to those who responded with ideas that didn't involve flashing a new rom, I appreciate it. If anyone else has another work around for this, I would appreciate it.
Thanks

This is very true. She doesn't care about most of the "cool" stuff, however, she was on the stock gingerbread release and said the camera was really slow and so I saw the video from qb king on flashing SRF 1.2 and gave it a whirl. Aside from this messaging issue (it also won't send mms), the rom is fast and smooth, plus the battery life is terrific.
Hello. Currently in UK running stock 4.02. On O2. Everywhere I use my phone I get terrible reception and very poor phone quality. I have found a semi solution by turning 3g off and forcing 2g data only but its getting on my nerves now. I have switched 3g back on and today when looking at battery stats my phone has been without a signal for 12% of the day. If I was on 2g I wouldn't have this problem. Is there anything I can do without flashing roms as I am not confident to do this and dont want to. I have worked and lived in the same place for over 5 years and had 2 iPhones and a Nokia n97 and never had any of these issues with these phones so its deffo this phone not my area and provider as that has stayed the same also. Do we think the next Google upgrades to 4.05 or 4.1 or whatever it is will improve this as I can see lots of custom roms which are designed to improve reception etc. P.s. I am not trolling as I LOVE this phone except when I want to use it as a phone! Its great at everything else! Thanks.

If your phone is dropping the entire network then it's a hardware issue and no base band is gonna fix that. Replace your phone if you can. If it's only 4g and 3g you're dropping the 4.0.4 radio is much better. Roms don't affect radio reception by the way.

If I leave my phone on 2g all day I don't lose signal and get acceptable reception. If I change phone to 3g I lose connection at work but I had that problem with previous phones also, my office is made of lead! However, when at home I have excellent signal strength but if on 3g I still get awful reception and call quality but if I change to 2g it dramatically improves. This is my second nexus phone, the first one did it also. If I flash or change to a different radio I have to change phone from stock which I don't want to do. Was hoping next upgrade would improve matters but sounds like it won't!

I don't think so. I think at the least you need unlocked bootloader. Also, if you do decide to flash a radio fastboot is the safest way. People will say clockwork recovery works fine but all it takes is one bad radio flash to brick your phone.

But if you use fastboot, it won't flash it if something wrong. Clockwork will flash it. It's rare somebody bricks flashing a radio with clockwork. And usually it is wrong radio. I don't recall anybody bricking with fastboot.

its really not that hard, like @rbiter said use fastboot. try UGKL1 radio, it worked a lot better than my stock radio. im curious have you had any dropped or missed called because of the reception? the reason i ask is because im in a similar situation like yours. i get about 10% time without signal too but when i look at the Mobile network signal in the battery's History details it shows a solid signal with no red marks indication no signal. im just a bit confused how it says it was 9% without signal but my history shows it always has a signal.

Is this a common issue with Samsung devices? I know they don't have strong radios. I was planning on getting the GNex, but now I'm not so sure. I don't want to root the phone. Would you guys still recommend the GNex knowing I don't plan on unlocking the bootloader and keeping it stock?

the galaxy nexus has better reception than my old Samsung captivate but not as good a some other phones like Motorola. it's only really an issue if you are in a bad coverage area or certain spots in the house that doesn't get good penetration. Your really need to root the phone at least to install a better radio. For some reason the stock radio that came with my Fido galaxy nexus was horrible and would of made the phone unacceptable for me. Rooting and flashing stuff on on the nexus is the easiest ive seen in a phone esp with all the dev support, it's a great phone to learn on.

Thanks for responding. I heard the Captivate was really bad. The problem is, I bought the extended warranty from Best Buy, so if I get the GNex, I'll be adding it on my extended warranty. If something goes wrong with the GNex, Best Buy checks to see if the phone has been rooted. Apparently they have been trained to check now. So I don't want to take the risk if that is the case.
I get pretty good 3G coverage in my area. It can get conguested at times and if the device has a weak radio, I will lose 3G. It happened a few times when I had the Nexus S. Never happened with any of the Motorola's I had.
OK, where would I find ugkl1 radio firmware and fast boot? I presume if I download fast boot it should come with some instructions? If I'm just flashing a radio, will I still get ota updates and will settings etc remain on my phone? Thanks.

I get pretty good 3G coverage in my area. It can get conguested at times and if the device has a weak radio, I will lose 3G. It happened a few times when I had the Nexus S. Never happened with any of the Motorola's I had.

you can relock the bootloader and flash the stock image from google and unroot the phone if you need to return it. i dont know if i the galaxy nexus has some kind of flash counter but most likely the best buy employee will just go into bootloader screen and check if the bootloader is locked or not. I never bought a phone from bestbuy or futureshop so i cant say for sure.

OK, where would I find ugkl1 radio firmware and fast boot? I presume if I download fast boot it should come with some instructions? If I'm just flashing a radio, will I still get ota updates and will settings etc remain on my phone? Thanks.

here's the thread for all the radios, try a few people have luck with different ones and they are really easy to flash once you have everything set up. The hardest part is going to be setting up the drivers, androidSDK, and fastboot but once you do you can use it for all your future phones just have to install the right drivers. here's a good guide to set everything up posted in this thread. Flash with fastboot instead of using CWM when possible, fastboot is much safer and you will need to know how to use it to go back to stock. I wouldnt worry about OTA once you unlock the boot, you can always just flash the OTA update which will be posted here or on google's site or just flash back to stock to receive the ota update.
I found this ROM:
http://www.gearengine.it/?page_id=2
...and would LOVE to run it on my AT&T GSIII but it says they're running it on the international version. I was planning on giving it a shot anyway but, while I'm working on rooting, I'd ask a few questions.
Think it'd work on the AT&T version?
If not, is there an equivalent ROM that will?
I want to keep ALL the stock functionality...camera wise, hardware wise (NFC, Bluetooth, etc) yet still getting the customization that that ROM afforded (I loved the Aroma installer, the inverted apps, etc) while running an overclock/undervolt kernel so I can juice this thing!
What are you guys running?!
One word of advice would be not to flash an international ROM on your AT&T device. I think that would lead to a brick.
Do some reading in the development sections to familiarize yourself with the basics.

I have to agree. I actually just commented in a thread before coming across this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2056655
Foxhound was flashed to their device, and their device was hard bricked. Please do not flash i9300 ROMs to US device variants.
I am currently running cm10.0.0 stable. It runs like a dream, not one issue with it so far. I would not recommend the new cm10.1 nightly builds until the data problem is fixed however.
LOL!!!
Well...this website was down for a few and I though ah hell, why not.
smh
Never actually heard of anyone hard bricking a phone. Awesome. This rounds out my Android experience nicely. Just as dude says, it doesn't do a damn thing. No power, not light, no vibration, nothing.
I can't believe there's no way to fix something like this. I'm all around amazed...I must say.
But yea...so...AT&T I go in the morning to test my acting skills I guess. *shrug*
And the Aroma installer was SO COOL!!!! What a shame...
Had I known the consequences could be so dire...

Very sorry to hear your luck =( Good luck at AT&T... Don't let this deter you from future ROM flashes, just make sure you are flashing the correct GS3 variant. If you are on AT&T your device is model# i747 and the codename is d2att when flashing ROMs.
I didn't need too many acting skills, I just told them I woke up in the morning and my phone would no longer turn on. They swapped it out pretty quickly =) My hard brick came from a CWM flash when I was inexperienced at flashing. (I came from an iPhone... bleh). I had used a terminal emulator and used some commands to install CWM. Big mistake. I then followed Cyanogenmod's WIKI on installing CWM and it worked like a charm. =)
Of course, in my opinion, nothing beats TWRP recovery installation... Step 1: Download Goo Manager from the PlayStore. Step 2: Click menu and "Install OpenRecovery Script" Step 3: Wait for your phone to reboot into recovery =)
Well now that I'm done with my tangent, I think I'm heading to bed for the night lol. Good luck at the AT&T store tomorrow! ...and have a Happy Holiday! =)

Hey...it's all good man. I've been in the Android game since the G1 and STILL I'm getting firsts. LOL!!! I will ALWAYS hack, tinker and tweak. That's the fun of it...this included.
I KNEW it was the wrong version. However...what I DIDN'T know was the likely outcome! Had no idea. Only ever heard of hard bricks as a mythical monster-like sorta thing. Through my G1 days, GS days, HTC Doubleshot, HTC One S and AAAAAAAAAAALL the devices I've rooted and ROM'd in between (my tablets and who knows how many friend's devices), I've never seen or had a true hard brick happen. Had a close call sorta with the ex-wife's GS, but I fixed it.
Honestly didn't think this was something that could ACTUALLY happen!!!
We'll see what happens.
Thanks everyone!!

I have been with Android through the GS1, GS2, and now GS3. I totally agree with you. I have done some really stupid stuff, but have always been able to fix the problem, mostly from help from this forum.
It may be just me, but it seems that it is a lot easier to brick the GS3 than its predecessors. Not from personal experience (knock on wood), but from reading through these forums.
Let us know what happens at the AT&T store. As an aside, does anyone ever know what happens in the long run when you turn in a hard brick to AT&T and get it replaced? I would imagine that once they JTAG it they would see that it was flashed. Could they charge you for the device?

That is a fantastic question. I was concerned about that myself the first time it happened. From my experience I was never charged when I went into the store to do the exchange. No bills came later in regards to it either. I think its pretty safe, but I wouldn't make any guarantees.
I also agree with you in that the GS3 seems a lot easier to brick than other phones I've dealt with.

Well...they gave me another one. Couldn't get another red one like I wanted since they didn't have any in stock which kinda sucks so I got the blurple one. Looks cool.
Obviously, I can't agree with the comments on the GSIII's resistance to bricking since I had something happen with this device that I've never seen or even HEARD of anyone doing. lol But it's all good. Time to start tinkering again.
Think I'm going to go the CM10 route since that is apparently a good ROM. However...does everything work with it? NFC and all? And...is there an OC/UV kernel that is compatible with that ROM?
As far as what they do with it after, I don't really know. I had to take it back to Best Buy since that's where I got it and it was so soon after getting it. I only had the thing...for...like...4 hrs when it got killed. lol I would imagine that they have the resources to easily fix a device that has had this happen. If they didn't replace it, I was just going to make a JIG for it (http://www.androidnova.org/unbrick-your-hard-bricked-smartphone/).
Thanks for all the help, guys!!!
Well...I didn't kill it. lol
So...first setup I tried:
ROM - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1766684
Kernel - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1756776
My ratings, out of 10?
Look and feel: 7...I only give it so low since it's EXACTLY the same as the HTC One S ROM I was running. This is usually a good thing but I was wanting something different.
Functionality: 4...every time I send a text, the damn thing says it didn't send! But it does! Very strange, very annoying, very unusable.
Customizability: 12...it's an AOKP ROM...with the Nova launcher...there are a mind bending number of options. I love it!
Quadrant score: 3...What the hell is an overclocked, current gen phone juiced to over 2.1GHZ doing getting ~3600 pts in quadrant? EXTREMELY disappointing.
Final words: Running Android 4.2...awesome. I love being cutting edge, but there isn't anything really awe-inspiring about it aside from the Jelly Bean 4.2 but the text messaging problem is just insurmountable.
Next is going to be this one:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1949025
Going to keep the kernel and we'll see what happens! I'll let you know!
Glad it worked out. =) Just a heads up 4.2 has a lot of common bugs with it being so new. That texting problem is among many. Bluetooth issues, USB MTP issues, internal/external storage swapped, mobile data and WiFi issues to name a few.. I'd recommend sticking to 4.1 unless you don't mind the above annoyances. =p They will get ironed out soon enough I'm sure. =)

That ROM flat out didn't work...it booted and everything but the keyboard kept giving me an FC. No bueno.
Back to the other I go!
Can anyone recommend a ROM that is as customizable as the AWESOME AOKP ROMs but still retain a bit of the Samsung-ness? Like...I like having the burst shot in the camera, the cool gesture and motion stuff they have, etc. Is there a middle ground?

Checkout NexusMOD in the development forum. Its a touchwiz ROM with AOSP messaging and email. You can still run Nova Launcher if you want, and holo locker if you don't want the TW lock screen.
I'm still tinkering and trying different ROMs. Downloading LiquidSmooth right now, can't find the NexusMOD one mentioned and I just tryed to flash an AOKP ROM and it wouldn't flash.
I SO BADLY want the 4.2 to work. I LOVE it!!! The Camera (wish it had HDR and multi shot modes, though), the stock messenger, LOCK SCREEN WIDGETS...it's just awesome.
I'm with you all the way rmp5s(except the bricking part), I want this ROM sooo bad. It's stockish which I like, yet has a lot of mods, any word yet on it coming to I747?
