After Rooting my AFTV 90% of Netflix Stops Working - Fire TV Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I read a bunch of threads on people getting a white screen and some clearing it up by resetting application cache. I have also tried uninstalling and re installing netflix without any luck.
My ultimate goal is to just have XBMC as my launcher and bypass the amazon home screen as there's lots of content I don't want my kids getting into. Not to mention I like xbmc better. It seems root is required to do this following the guide on here.
I have competently reset my aftv to factory defaults twice and re-rooted with the exact same results. I am fairly new to rooting and modding android so I am not sure where to go.

What FireTV software version are you on? I have been rooted for a while now, on the very first (of three) updates and no issues. How is Netflix not working?
The only thing I can think of is when you have a video playing or paused in XBMC, Netflix and Hulu will crash or not display correctly. To fix this, I changed the keymap for the back button to stop. This is described in the FireTV XBMC wiki.

I was on the second software version until I turned on the tv yesterday, now the 3rd. I would get an error were having trouble playing this for 90% of things I tried to stream. It started right after rooting and went away as soon as I did a factory restore.

Oops, I crapped my pants! (Because Netflix doesn't work anymore!)

I didn't actually crap my pants.
Netflix was working for a couple of months, then it stopped working. When I try to play any video it says it can't play it and to try again later or watch something else. I uninstalled and reinstalled Netflix, I cleared the cache and data for the app, I created a new Netflix account, nothing has helped.
Anything short of a factory restore I can try? Netflix support has been unsuccessful and referred me to Amazon. But I just rooted the Fire TV and I've got XBMC all set up the way I like it and I don't want to lose all that crap.
Thanks
Joe

No, I've been having this problem for weeks now and Netflix works fine on other devices on the same LAN.
I had this issue too with both Netflix and Amazon videos. unfortunately, I had to factory reset to fix problem.

I have had strange problems with my Netflix. Whenever I exit XBMC and launch Netflix it will start to load the video I want to watch, then it gives me a similar message. Pull the power and reset FireTV and it works fine. I wish there was a simple reboot app that I could sideload. A reboot always fixes any weird problems that I am having with Netflix.
Netflix??
I know this a matter of opinion and add-ons installed, but I would say ditch Netflix and use XBMC exclusively.

Yes, I'd be perfectly happy to do so. But my kids want to unending supply of idiotic animation that Netflix provides and I don't want to fill my file server up with it.

Select and Play on the Fire TV remote for 5 seconds, I think, forces a reboot.
Clear data for Amazon Video in the app settings. Got Prime videos and Netflix working for me again.

I just tried this and it does not seem to have worked.
Have you tried using the amazon app control to uninstall it and then redownload? I had both the Amazon and the Play versions of Netflix on my ftv at one point, and had some issues loading Netflix videos. I uninstalled both, then reinstalled just the Amazon one and have not had problems more than once or twice since, and rebooting cleared the issue each time once I'd done the reinstall.
Sure you exited XBMC properly, or killed it.
I get this problem if I start playing something in xbmc press home and niether prime or netflix will play, seems like it's because xbmc is holding on to the video layer still.

I would think power cycling the FireTV would clear that up.
In any case, I came into the living room the other day and Netflix was suddenly working again. Perhaps the clearing Data and Cache for Amazon Video did it, but it needed to reboot and I didn't do that part?
I hate not knowing for sure how something got fixed. But hey, the kids can watch the friggin' Power Rangers and My Little Pony again.
Thanks everyone
Joe
Yeah sure it will,, But your know sometimes it's some odd little thing, and I did not register that you power cycled although I would think so but again I missed the post saying it, so I just threw an idea out there for everybody who encountered this in various ways.
Anyway.. I'm glad to hear everything is working again.

[Q] Fire TV navigation slows down then crashes on startup

Hi. I tried posting on another site but no one seemed to be experiencing the same issue. I recently switched from SPMC to 13.2. After just few days navigation became very slow but video played fine. It would keep getting slower despite clearing cache then it just wouldn't start--immediate crash.
I switched back to SPMC and still menu was slow, video perfect. But today it just wouldn't launch. After several reboots and clear cache from fire os menu I got it to work. It played a video with no problems, however, I know based on how navigation sticks its going to crash again. Problem is I can't force a crash. It only crashes on startup, making debugging impossible I think.
I'm basically using just genesis and a few program add-ons all from add-on installer. I've used aeon nox and ccm skins. They both do the same thing.
I'm thinking fresh start but there's little reason to think I won't end up back here.
The only other relevant piece of info (maybe) is I recently installed clockwork mod and installed rbox latest firmware. Then I updated the remote from there. It may have nothing to do with anything but without a log I don't know how else to explain it. Anyone else having similar problems? Any and all advice is welcomed. Thanks.

Netflix, WatchESPN get stuck at 99% and needs reboot to watch.

Hello,
I have a newest pre rooted rom on my FireTV with XBMC running the newest Netflix app (White Icon with red letters).
I am using FiredTV for a launcher and tend to use XBMC, Netflix, WatchESPN, and Slingplayer Tablet. I have been having a problem where the video won't play on certain apps and the circle keep spinning.
XBMC always works for videos. However NETFLIX, WatchESPN will get stuck especially if the FireTV has shut off. I need to reboot the FireTV to get these apps to work again. Shutting down the app and reopening it has no effect.
Also SlingPlayer will load SD quality but once I put HQ quality it won't show any video. A reboot is needed to fix it.
Anyone have this problems also?
Is there a way to get the FireTV to reboot daily automatically?
exit/close your xbmc before using espn or netflix app

Yup that solved my problem by closing XBMC.
closing xbmc (actually running spmc) works for netflix....but i am still having issues with sling tv. i get stuck on buffering until i reboot the fire tv. anyone else seeing this?
Slingtv software is still in very beta stages. Firetv app doesnt get updated as much as the android and pc versions.
On firetv.
Slingtv regularly closes sometimes.
When that issue is happening test it on android and check if the same is happening. sometimes the service just laggeds down as a whole.
Slingtv is working better for me with latest update and on USB/HDD. also slingtv requires is disk space intensive.

Netflix sucks on FTV

My Netflix sucks big time on my rooted fire TV. Stutters quite a bit. No combination of the video frame rate helps in the settings. What more can I do? I shouldn't have to wipe cache and restart every hour to get smooth playback. Thanks

Netflix has been terrible on aftv. Between the loading to 99%, and "unable to play this title right now" not to mention that atv2 has a much better resolution (for me anyway).
I was experiencing a stutter and I think I switched to WiFi to fix it. Not 100% on that but its working better now.

How'd you fix the two issues you mentioned? Netflix just started doing the same, for no apparent reason about a week ago on my FTV. I found one that here that was said to have the fix, but I've performed each of the steps listed there with no luck. Right now, I'm on 51.1.6.0... I tried the latest, but am affected by the HDCP issue, so had to roll back.

Not sure I did fix it. It may have got better on its own. You could try uninstalling Netflix, clear data 3 times in Amazon video, unplug for 10 seconds. Then it may be beneficial to boot recovery and wipe dalvik and cache partitions. Finally reinstall Netflix.
Mine occasionally doesn't load all the way but restarting the video fixes it.

I don't know what the deal is, but I've tried all of the suggested fixes, but continue to get the same error message. I'll wait for pre-rooted 51.1.6.3 and see if that fixes it.

Sorry. Overall Netflix on Amazon has been terrible for a lot of users while others seem to have no problems at all. They're not likely to provide a fix but it doesn't hurt to contact Amazon. At the very least you'll join a growing list of dissatisfied customers. Problem is Amazon points the finger a Netflix and vice versa. But like I've said before, Netflix has always been fine on my other devices going back almost a decade.

Yeah, the part I don't get is that it just stopped working for no apparent reason. It'd been working fine for months, then all of a sudden I start getting the "can't play video at this time" error (something to that effect). Anyway, thanks for the suggestions and feedback.

If it's any consolation... on 51.1.x.x versions of Fire TV, I never had issues where it wouldn't play video, but I did have studdering and slow/fast issues. On the 51.5.3.0 Fire OS 5 preview, all that has gone away and aside from an issue with 5.1 sound which is solved by putting it on stereo, netflix is working great.

I agree. Netflix performance actually gotten worse on the Fire TV since the latest official stable update. For months I been using it and it was fine but now once again I have issues where the video would freeze up for about 5 to 10 seconds then speed up right away everyone is super fast while the audio continues. Very annoying as I thought they finally fixed it but it came back again. Now I also been getting the "unable to play title" error again too.
I actually started to use my Apple TV 3rd Generation which is connected to Wifi 5ghz channel 36. Loads programs quickly, no stuttering, no unable to, no credit shrinking.
I've learned that having another video app open while trying to access Netflix is what causes the problem. The reason rebooting fixes it is because you essentially flush the FireTV's memory when you do the reboot. If you exit out of other apps fully, you shouldn't have anymore problems. I miss being able to click the Home button when switching between video apps but ever since I started doing a proper shutdown for video apps before switching to the next one, I no longer need to reboot to get the different video apps work.

That message occurs when you have another background application tying up the video process.
Try rebooting. And never use the home button to exit Kodi or any other video application. Quit it properly. And watch out for SPMC, the way it's been implemented to minimize to the home screen with the back button is really unhelpful on the AFTV.
Same goes for using Kodi as a launcher. Don't expect it to be reliable.

Hadn't considered that possibility; however, I don't use an alternate launcher and I always shutdown Kodi properly. Maybe there's something else tying up the video process? I've gone through the 'clear data' process on Amazon Video multiple times, but that didn't fix Netflix. I'll try to go straight into Netflix after a fresh reboot and see what I get.

Kodi Closing when FireTV Sleeps

I apologize if this not the correct forum for this post. I tried the Kodi.tv forums and no one seems to be having this issue.
I'm have a FireTV v1 running 5.2.1.1 (no updates since Aug). I am also running Kodi 16.1
Up until a few days ago, Kodi would always stay open even when the FireTV went to sleep. When I woke up the FireTV, Kodi was still open and updated with any new content.
Over the past few days (nothing changed as far as I am aware), when the FireTV sleeps, Kodi exits. I have to reopen Kodi and wait for it to load and sync. This is not a desirable behavior.
Any thoughts on why this may have happened and what I might do to remedy it?
Thanks
My first thought is don't let the box sleep.
http://www.aftvnews.com/how-to-set-a-custom-sleep-time-on-a-rooted-fire-tv-or-fire-tv-stick/
mine does this as well. Its a gen 1 on the newest firmware, so jailbreaking isnt currently an option. I have two of these, and one doesnt have the behavior at all. Id really like to fix the one closing out of kodi.
