Upgrade from M7 - G3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys I'm thinking about getting this phone because it looks sweet. Is there anything on it not better than the m7? Is battery life the same or better on the g3? Does wireless charging work with a case on? Is the bootloader unlock able?

I wanna trade my galaxy s4(locked bootloader) for an optimus g pro. are there any limitations with this phone as far as root & installing custom roms, specifically aosp & cm based?

I don't think there is any.
ROMs and custom kernels are many, though I am good enough with my rooted Stock ROM. Excellent battery life. I once managed to have 44hours of battery usage from full charge down to 4%

sounds good. I had an LG Optimus L9 p769, the battery was great on that phone also, but the bootloader was locked or something.. you couldn't put custom roms on like cm. maybe you can now, but then you couldn't and I really couldn't stand the UI. and had I done more research before getting the at&t s4 I would've known the bootloader is locked on the firmware that was on my phone when I got it.. sucks.

I have S4 Active also with locked bootloader it totally sucks so I use my G Pro as my daily running Paranoid Android and totally love it. The only thing that sucks is there isn't much love for cases. There's some good stuff but not like what's available for the S4. I rock mine naked anyway with a tempered glass screen protector it's mint. You're gonna love this phone. You getting black or white? I wish the white was available when I got mine lol.

I'd like to get black and I'm not too picky about cases. I usually like the holster combo's but a simple snap on is fine

I'm using Nillkin hardcase on my OGPro, and it looks and feels really nice. I've had enough with all those flip/full leather covers, and the troubles to put the whole thing into my limited sized pocket.

g3 over the S5?

I'm using the s5 now and while it has a beautiful screen and camera, I'm not to impressed with how battery life and ui fluidity. My friends offering me his g3, is it worth switching out based on those metrics? Has the g3 improved in usability with every update or is it just a hopeless mess?

Try it for yourself. The lag to me is not really an issue. There ARE slip ups here and there but generally, it performs completely fine and fluidly. It also depends on what is important to you. The G3 is only slightly larger than the S5 but the screen is .4" larger and also sharper (though in most day to day operations, it's not noticeable). The G3 also looks nicer and the software is not nearly as bloated as the S5.
Battery life on the S5 will be better but the G3 can definitely last me a day with no issues. For some people, it will even last two days. If you have access to a charger at work/home, then it's really not an issue at all. I've never been in a situation where I've run out of battery and didn't have access to a charger, not even once.
Not sure about the s5 but I had the 3 and 4 and liked my HTC m8 way more. And the g3 even more than that. I'm actually impressed with the stock launcher.

Haha. It's a sweet phone. I gave it to my 8 yr old. He's running cynogen 11 and it's perfect. I always buy phones on impulse. Without bootloader being unlocked it's kinda a Bummer but I'm playing with my new arduino and that keeps my flashing rom addiction under control.
The only reason why I didn't get the m8 is because of the poor after sales service and qc of htc. I had two m7s prior and they both had issues.
The s5 is a great phone but I'm not too happy about its fluidity. It always feels it's one step behind your actions. Like a home button press or an app switch would have one second delay. How would you rate the g3 vs the m8 based on fluidity? Almost at 80 percent?
Speed wise the phones are about the same. I used the backup I had from the m8 and using Nova launcher. So the setup looks about the same as the m8 and it acts just as well. Just bigger screen and way better camera. And I did the volume hack. This thing is way louder than my m8. Not the the quality is that great but it's a phone. If you want good sound use headphones or a stereo.
I've never favored Samsung or Apple, always HTC but going from the DNA to the M8 wasn't a worthwhile upgrade to me. HTC has bogged down the Android experience a little too much for me in the last couple years. I went for the G3 because of its sexiness and big screen and what I thought was going to be performance but have experienced a tremendous amount of grief on that front. I won't trade up my G3 just yet but I'm getting to the point where its a viable option and I may consider clone phones like a galaxy. I want fast and fluid and the G3 is just not as responsive as it should be.

Have you switched to the ART runtime? I did that before installing any apps and my phone is lightning fast. I have yet to experience any of the lag people keep claiming this phone has.

No I haven't, all I've heard is that android L will have art and I've used it once on a ROM for my DNA. I don't know the process of switching, only that I will lose xposed modules. How do I go about this?

[Q] One M8 Lollipop Battery life

Hi everyone. I've just gotten the lollipop ota update on my Rogers One m8. I've been wondering, how good is the battery life for the m8 on 5.0.1? Is it worse than 4.4.4 or better? This will determine whether I update or not. Thanks!

Just upgraded to Lollipop yesterday, and I haven't used it long enough to tell. However, my M8 also has the issue of GPS turning on EVERY freaking time it unlocks. Extremely annoying and can't be good for the battery life.

For me battery is same or better than 4.4.4

I'd say, its alteast 20-25% better than what kitkat offered.

There already a thread in the M8 General section, where battery life is discussed ad nauseum, with screenshots galore. I think that thread has all you want, and more.
Battery life is really subjective. It depends a lot on your specific usage patterns, and local cell reception. You mileage can (and will) vary from that reported by other users. So IMO discussion of battery life is fairly pointless.
I agree that battery life is subjective. However, it might be useful to relate that subjective perception. In my case, right after the update, I felt that the battery life was much worse and the device in general became laggy. Since then I did two factory resets and now the battery life is OK, although I still did not reinstall Facebook, which many people claim is a big battery eater on Lollipop. The responsiveness of the device has also improved after the second reset. Somehow during the second reset the nu player got selected and after I disabled it in the developers options the device is running well. Strange that happened like this.
But even with these recent improvements, I still don't see the point in the update. if I could go back in time with what I know now, I would not update. Kit Kat worked well and Lollipop did not bring any significant improvements.

And I've been running Lollipop with Facebook, and battery life is great, and very similar to KitKat. No lag like others report, and while the update is not much of a change, there are some new features, and certainly nothing is "worse".
A very different (even conflicting) experience, and there you start to see where discussions on battery life aren't very useful.
There is already a massive discussion in General HERE
It makes absolute sense to continue there..

Hi guys, im Kia.. Maybe someone knows me from G2 forum or from YouTube, never mind I just sold my G2 and im thinking what phone should i buy now. Money is not problem, theres no money haha lol . I was looking for some phone that has great dev support and good camera screen etc.. Hows battery life? And is it overheating when u play games and things like that? I heard some comments on youtube about overheating but if theres some better kernel than stock ofc i will install it... So if u suggest me G3 expect one ROM Reviewer in this awesome community. Thanks for any help or reply and yeah check my channel if u want And yeah, is there bootloader in G3 that will not let me install ROMs till i unlock it or ? The g3, fells amazing even though its plastic. I used the phone from, 7 a clock in the morning to 4 at the night, and it only used 30% of battery life. This is with stock rom, no changes have been made. I fell it's a really solid phone, nice camera good screen, and fast! And we got offical cm12 now So just ask here or pm me, if you got any questions And the overheating thing was fixed with a update i belive. Atleast i don't have it. And all i had to do, for getting custom rom, was root the phone install twrp and the flash nothing else

Here`s my 2 cents:
1. Rooting the device is fairly simple imo. Downgrade to a KK rom, root it with PurpleDrake, flash a custom recovery and then you can flash a custom rom/kernel.
2. I`am not a big gamer but when i do i seldomly experience the thermal throttling issue. Maybe it kicks in during extensive gaming.
3. I think Cloudy 2.1 is the best stock based cutom rom atm which is very stable and fast.
4. Haven`t flashed custom kernels so far so can`t give you any personal xperience
Overall its a great device, i have the 32/3GB device whivh is the one to get imo. The camera is excellent in daytime/with sufficient light but in darker conditions pics can be a bit grainy.

Good luck and enjoy
cm 12 stable and camera better than stock ?
I loved oneplus one cm11s the customization of it? Does cm12 have all those features too? And is it on lollipop or kitkat base ? Too bad Xposed doesn't support lollipop yet....
In the price range you can't get much better than the G3. Good looking phone, full of potential.

Finally, Pie is here for Verizon ?

What's the new software version? G710VM10k?
new version is G710VM20a Mine is the sprint ebay phone that I rebranded to VM verizon because they get OTA update and voila it got PIE tonight about 11 pm PST. UI is nearly identical LOL, though 4gLTE shows up even with wifi on now but performance is good, I don't notice anything better or worse yet but I'm very much hoping battery life is improved and maybe camera but I doubt the camera part. I'll keep you posted on it as the day goes tomorrow.
Same 20a. Overnight drain was 1%. New navigation gesture is great IMO. But haven't really tried anything. Also will keep you posted.

All in all so far pretty good I would say...

2 updates in less than a month!? Yes - what is going on with LG & VZW being responsive?
