[Q] Root without computer (broken usb port) - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have an old HTC Droid Incredible that I want to root so I can install Market Helper and do a few other things. My problem is that the micro usb port is broken. It doesn't charge and nothing happens when I connect it to the computer. I have tried about 20 cables. Is there any way to root this phone without a computer?

Not that I know of.

You mean this? They won't let me post URL but search for WiFi ADB in google play store. Should be compatible with your android version also. No root required.
can't confirm if it works but this seems like it would be your best bet.

phone not seen by laptop via usb

Could someone help me on this issue. When i connect my phone via usb to my laptop and on other different laptops/computers i've tried so far, it only charges the phone without mounting sd card or allowing data transfer. I'm using an O2 branded stock htc desire running on froyo. i want to root my phone and install install a custom rom. i don't know how or if possible to make a goldcard without using a usb connection cable to a laptop/pc and for the other processes of rooting and installing a custom rom.
I took it for repairs and a new port was put in and still same problem persists.
You know that you have to manually select mount sd. Also have you tried to connect it via adb, not to transfer files but to see if i usb connection works?

For the adb connection, I think this will require USB cable connection or it's there a way to do this without USB cable connection.

Once you plug in your USB cable, you have to pull the top bar down and manually select to use it as a usb 'disk'...only then will you be able to load it with custom ROM.
As for rooting, I think you need to enable USB debugging for the UnRevoked method....

when i select it to use as usb disk, the laptop doesn't see it, same for usb debugging.
i tried using a usb hub with four ports to connect my phone to the laptop, the message i get is that '' this usb device is not recognised''. Pls why that message
Any help on this issue. I've been reading on usb brick phones and how to unbrick it. The problem is even when phone is connected via usb in fastboot mode, it still say device is not recognised. i was trying to get the CID number of the phone. i've never rooted or flash a custom rom yet. i started experiencing this when the phone fell on a concrete floor. i don't know if this is hardware related problem or software related.

[Q] USB won't connect Phone to Computer

I cannot connect my device (EVO 4G) to my computer via USB. I have all the drivers, I have everything set correctly on my device and I cannot seem to make it work.
I cannot use adb wifi because I am not rooted, and I would like to root so I can get rid of this gingerbread 2.3.3 because it sucks. If you think you can help please do so I am dying here and nothing I find seems to be helping me and I would really like to get rooted again... damn insurance replacements.

Did your computer promote discovering new hardware when EVO 4G is pluged in?
Or do you mean your computer can find your sd card when EVO 4G is on disk drive mode, but can't successfully connect with a hecking software?
Do you have usb debugging on just a thought?

have you tried a different computer? What OS (operating system) are you running? Win 7 picks up drivers a lot better than say Windows XP. go to Start right click on computer and click on manage.. Go to devices, and check to see if you see a Android device driver on there. If you don't than either your usb is messed up or the os isn't picking up the driver. If you do see the device, uninstall it and replug your usb back in and see if it installs... Lemme know if that worked thanks
Change the cable. I've gone through several cables because of this exact same issue.
Or you could have the dreaded bad usb port.

Yep, same problem .
4 different cables, only one will recognize as "disc drive".
I have tried different cables, different PCs different methods only to discover my port was coming off of the board. Found a service locally that replaces them and I am good now. Very frustrating....
There are a few threads that discuss using ZRoot to attain a temp root for the sake of trying to fix the usb with adb codes. You may want to try this so you can use adb wifi...Example here
Hope this helps...

Can I root from SDCard?

I bought a used stock EVO. When I plug the USB to my computer the charge light turns on but I don't get any sign that it recognizes the phone. So I can't mount for rooting. Is there a way to root from the sdcard? The phone sees the card fine. I have searched Google for a while and couldn't find anything.

The phone doesn't give any indication that something other than a charger is connected. No screen asking how I want to connect, and no USB icons on the task bar. So I think it is a device issue not a computer issue. I have tried 3 different cables and 2 different computers.
hey,
Try a different usb port as well as rebooting your computer, make sure you have the htc drivers needed for rooting downloaded maybe? If that doesnt work maybe factory reset the phone and try again! I wish you the best of luck!

[Q] usb/debugging not found

I've been running CyanogenMod 10.2 on my rooted HTC One for a good long while now. Since the ROM worked so well, I never had the need to connect the phone to a computer via USB in quite some time. A few months ago, when I attempted to transfer some photos, I ran into a weird and frustrating road block; my phone is simply not being recognized by any computer <see here>
I have updated all drivers
I have enabled debugging in Developer Options
I have tried rebooting Fastboot in bootloader
I have tried using the toolkits
I have tried everything I think I know
The weird part is that the phone charges via USB connected to the computer.
Since it didn't effect much, I just figured it was a glitch and I never ran into a problem again--that is, until today. I hadn't used my MHL adapter with the HTC One (only my GNexus), but after reviewing an intended installation of a Pioneer Appradio, I wanted to ensure that my One would work with the MHL. Hooking up my One to the Samsung MHL adapter (and power supply of course), I get no display on my television.
I am now beginning to wonder if the USB port is damaged. Visual inspection doesn't reveal anything, but I am curious if anyone has had this problem and would appreciate any help. Is there any way to test if I've fouled up the port?
Does the phone recognize that it is connected to a pc? Can you access the phones storage from your pc?

No and no
I installed Flashify and did install CWM 6.0.4.7 to see if it would help, but to no avail
Have you tried adb with a different rom or stock via ruu? If it still dosent work then, either your usb port or your cable is messed up.

Your problem seems simular to what I had.
If you are sure the software settings are ok and that doesnt work, remove the backcover remove the battery connector, put it back again and see if that works. Does charging work?

Thats weird my s2 tablet has USb problems to. It stopped reading OTG usb connections and the PC. However it is always able to charge. I have noticed that when it does finally read on the PC it seems like the drives dont switch right and my battery wont charge. It got to the point I dont even try to plug it into a pc or USB otg just incase it quits charging I have SD card and twrp for installs so I use that instead. Most be a problem with the usb port and drivers.

I dont know the answer nor the solution.
What I noticed however is that I used my tablet as an monitor for an USB web cam.
The problem (charging but not being able to connect to PC) started AFTER I removed the webcam.
The app I use (USB Camera Pro) has an option "remove camera safely"
If I use that option everything works fine but if I remove the cam cable without pressing this option I cant connect to my PC anymore and have to unplug the battery.
I am having a similar issue and would be grateful for help. My Tab T815 has a clean install of the latest Android 10 Rom and Pico Gapps via TWRP 3.4. All seem to be working great apart from the USB OTG. Specifically, I am trying to connect my DJI Mini drone controller and it's not registering it plugged in. I also have Android 10 on a galaxy S5 and have no issues at all when I connect the DJI controller to the phone. I have run a diagnostic app that says OTG is compatible with the T815 so am now at a loss on what to try next. Could this be an issue with the Rom?
