phone not seen by laptop via usb - Desire General

Could someone help me on this issue. When i connect my phone via usb to my laptop and on other different laptops/computers i've tried so far, it only charges the phone without mounting sd card or allowing data transfer. I'm using an O2 branded stock htc desire running on froyo. i want to root my phone and install install a custom rom. i don't know how or if possible to make a goldcard without using a usb connection cable to a laptop/pc and for the other processes of rooting and installing a custom rom.
I took it for repairs and a new port was put in and still same problem persists.

You know that you have to manually select mount sd. Also have you tried to connect it via adb, not to transfer files but to see if i usb connection works?

For the adb connection, I think this will require USB cable connection or it's there a way to do this without USB cable connection.

Once you plug in your USB cable, you have to pull the top bar down and manually select to use it as a usb 'disk'...only then will you be able to load it with custom ROM.
As for rooting, I think you need to enable USB debugging for the UnRevoked method....

when i select it to use as usb disk, the laptop doesn't see it, same for usb debugging.
i tried using a usb hub with four ports to connect my phone to the laptop, the message i get is that '' this usb device is not recognised''. Pls why that message

Any help on this issue. I've been reading on usb brick phones and how to unbrick it. The problem is even when phone is connected via usb in fastboot mode, it still say device is not recognised. i was trying to get the CID number of the phone. i've never rooted or flash a custom rom yet. i started experiencing this when the phone fell on a concrete floor. i don't know if this is hardware related problem or software related.

Problem connecting HTC Desire HD via USB cable

Hi All,
since some days i'm not able to get connection to my PC via USB cable. DHD does'nt even ask for sort of connection - all relative settings on the phone like USB debugg & ask for mod of USB conn are of course checked!
PC doesn't react on my DHD. Anyone did entcounter the same?
I'm workin on ARHD 2.15. Attempts with other ROMS was also not succesfull
Any advice will be highly appreciated!
hann
Have you tried with another computer? If it doesn't work, you've got a usb brick. I remember I had that on my friends desire, but got it fixed using this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=691639
I don't know if this will work on the desire Hd though...
Thank-you Mate for your response.
Yes I checked it on other pcs and I was at least asked for sort of connection I intended to do. But sdcard wasn't mounted though. Also in fastboot mode loading bootloader usb is not active.
I will try to follow your tip.

Just try your card on another phone, or try another card from other phone to pinpoint the problem

[Q] cannot change connect to pc connection/connection default as charging

i had notice there is alot similar post to this problem but none really solved it. so i start this thread to make it more specific
1) once connected to pc, my wildfire automatically charge
2) no pop-up or option on the top to slide down to select either htc sync, mount as sd card, etc
3) tried reboot, mount unmount card, untick usd debugging, changed other rom, but still not working.
4) if connected to pc still automatically charging even if i change "default connection type" to disk drive, or usb tethering
5) i tick "ask me" so i can choose the connection type when connect to pc, but when connected to pc, nothing. just charging.
i'm rooted, using hg hybrid v3 (problem was there before i flash HG rom). it used to work before. i dont recalled when was the last time it start to behave like this. all this time i thought i set the connection default to charging, but when i want to transfer songs, only then i realised this problem. i m not sure which custom rom might cause this problem (if it does) because i had flash more than 10 roms
i have same problem with cm7
I haven't try to format my sd card. because when I connect without sd card, still no connect option. if my card is malfunction/the main problem, then my phone should work fine n show the connect option after I remove the card, right? (I do have connection option on the setting. what I meant no connection option is the pop up conection menu+connection option on the top bar. changing the connection on the setting change nothing)
I too have this prob but never questioned this as i never use htc sync. But if u really wanna use it try this i'm not sure it may work or not but mostly its due to driver problem:
1.Connect your device in htc sync mode.
2.Uninstall or Remove all drivers of htc and also htc sync.
3.Disconnect your device and Restart your pc.
4.Reinstall htc sync and connect your device in htc sync mode.
5.It'll install fresh drivers for your device and if asked to restart then do it else run htc sync.
If you are running vista or later try to run htc sync in administrator mode.
I'm not sure this method work but there's no problem on trying it. Reply your result after doin above steps
I also think the problem might related to my driver but I remember that when I first connect to my pc, there will be pop up menu, and my phone automatically recognized as "disk drive" (I m not install HTC driver yet. infact ,I install the driver after my phone connected to my pc through disk drive connection since the driver located on the SD card). nway, I"ll try your method and post the result later.
I just notice this might not work..the problem is I cannot change the connection. even if I did, it doesn't change the connection. it just charging.. as if I put it on default "charging" as it connect. but I will try later anyway
When i connect my phone the debugging icon shows up and my pc makes the noise but doesnt let me choose mass storage (running cm7). it shows up on my pc on drive f: but when i click it just says please insert a disc into removable storage F:
xynok, did u tried untick the usb debugging? go to setting, application, development, untick usb debugging. u still lucky at least it prompt u something if u connect to pc, mine nothing. its like I plug it to the socket wall not pc

not working..
try this if u r using sense roms . Also try this for AOSP roms, if there is an option(i dont know about AOSP).
Go to Settings/Applications/Manage applications/All/
Then search for "Connect to PC". Actually in stock roms that was an app by htc. But there must be something similar to that in AOSP roms. Then open that and select, "Force stop" , "Clear data", "Clear cache".
I dont know for sure if that solves the issue or not. But have a try.
And by seeing this thread, actually i got a doubt, "can we synchronise the htc sync in AOSP custom roms". Since AOSP is nothing but removing the HTC crap. Can someone confirm this .......

nope. still nothing. anyway since it had this problem, I had wipe my wildfire few times, n try different rom.. maybe it is because of faulty cable. but if the cable is the culprit, why it still charging? is it possible the cable is broken but still can charging?

Not telling that it should be, but definitely there is a possibility of a cable culprit.
The USB male/female end has 4 connections in which two connections are used for voltage and the remaining two connections are used for data transfer.
There might be a possibility that the data connection got broken with voltage connection retaining. Try with another cable (any USB v2 cable).
And one more thing, for having the disk drive option, nothing need to be installed in the pc. U need to install htc driver in the pc only if u want to use usb debugging , usb tethering.
[But at the wildfire end the cable has 5 connections and i dont know what the 5th one is for. mostly it will be a NO CONNECTION]
Now i got another idea to diagnose ur issue.
Well do u know of application "pdanet". It uses USB DEBUGGING feature to tether ur phone internet to PC. Actually usb debugging can be used both under charge mode and disk drive mode. What u can know on doing this is whether usb debugging through ur phone is working or not. U can diagnose the thing while checking with every app that uses usb debugging. So try it. Enable the usb debugging in phone first.
---Install pdanet desktop version and follow the setup instructions. It asks to connect ur phone during setup to install usb driver and also pdanet.apk to mobile. Connect ur phone with usb debugging enabled. I doubt whether desktop version installs or not because of ur issue. Mostly desktop version of pdanet will not install without a phone connected having usb debugging enabled. And if the desktop version is installed successfully, that means ur phone usb debugging is working. And if desktop version is installed successfully, that means it also installed the mobile version of pdanet.apk to ur phone (which says that data transfer is working). Then open the pdanet on phone and enable usb tether. Then open pdanet from desktop and connect. Then see whether u r able to access internet from pc.
---One more method is try to use ADB from android sdk. It also uses the usb debugging feature.
If adb and pdanet works, that means usb debugging feature on ur phone is working. If it is so, then it is mostly not a cable problem (as far as i know). And if they dont work there is a chance that it is a cable problem.
......................................................................................................................................................................................
And one more thing. If u have used a stock rom (freshly formatted), and faced the issue, then it is mostly not a software problem. Then it might be cable problem or some kind of problem in ur phone. Also check ur phone radio version. Thats all.
bharatgaddameedi, i cant install pdanet. it say android phone not detected. error =103. i think u were right. its hardware related problem but its look like not the cable. most probably its my wildfire usb jack. i test the cable with other mobile, its working (test it on nokia 5800). before i had this problem, sometime i use htc cable to transfer data for my 5800, and some time i used 5800 cable to transfer data for my wildfire. the difference between the two cable pin might damage my wildfire usb jack.. (u said htc cable got 5 pin, so i asume nokia got 4?)

So, pdanet not detecting the phone means usb debugging is also not working under charge mode. That should be phone hardware related problem like u have said about usb jack.
And No. All the micro USB version 2 cables will be the same. Its same for 5800 and wildfire. I use my previous 5233 cable to my wildfire even now.
The usb jack of wildfire may damage if u have used it in an improper way. Something like pressure on the cable when connected and so on...
So, its not something we can solve here. That should be given to service centre as far as i know

Can't be. I am using my N82's data cable for data transfers on my Wildfire from Day 1. The provided data cable is pretty much permanently attached to the wall charger.
I accept the fact that it might be hardware problem but there is one more thing I want to try. how about flashing stock rom from pc? flashing 2.1 is ok since it can be rooted again. I had flash stock rom but from the clockwork mod, not from pc, and the hboot is been remove for save flashing. I never try this before because all this time I thought that the problem was cause by custom rom, so I just need to find the right custom Rom.
How can u flash a stock Rom from pc when the usb is not functioning. RUU will not work.
Things get worse when basic things stop functioning.

Windows won't recognize t989

Hello all!
First: I promise I searched the forums and google as hard as I could!
I'm running AOKP JB with CWM, although the problem was present on stock ICS from T-Mobile.
Symptoms: Computer and phone will refuse to acknowledge any connection (nothing shows up in Device Manager), except the phone will still charge. If I do the "remove the battery with USB plugged in" trick, the first time I do it, it will recognize an unknown device, but kies and adb won't recognize it. If I unplug it and plug it back in, it'll go back to not acknowledging any connection.
I previously programmed it (when I was still running stock ROM) via ADB via WiFi, but I need to be able to use ADB via USB. Besides, I can't seem to get ADB over WiFi anymore.
When I plug it into a different computer (Win7), it will, however, recognize my phone.
Earlier this year, before I ever tried programming via WiFi, it connected to my Win8 machine with no problem. I don't think it's a problem with the wifi setup though because the ROM was reinstalled and of course I've restarted ADB in USB mode in the months since...
What I've tried:
Reinstalling Kies
Reinstalling Samsung USB drivers
[^]Restarting the ADB server
Updating ADB
Trying different USB cables
Trying different USB ports
Toggling USB debugging
Toggling MTP mode
The UART thing from the dialer
Restarting the phone and the computer (of course)
Checking to see if my computer's USB drivers need to be updated
The android terminal command "setprop persist.sys.usb.config mass_storage,adb"
Pulling and replacing the battery while connected via USB
Crying in a corner
If anyone can help me, it'd be greatly appreciated! I'm all out of ideas and Google is no longer helpful =/
try to uninstall the drivers that are present anything samsung related to your drivers ... then connect the phone and let the process do its thing if you have the samsung drivers saved on your PC and the drivers still aint working update the drivers and then manually click where the drivers are to install them and hopefully it will work and when you tried MTP is it the only option it gives you no storage or anything ??... and is usb debugging on when you are trying all this ??

I tried on my work computer that didn't have any samsung drivers and when the "unknown device" dialog popped up it didn't do anything or install anything, nor did it show up in Device Manager. Unplugging and replugging it back in did not reproduce the dialog box. Togged USB Debugging and still no dialog box saying it recognized it.
The thing with the samsung drivers is that they're self installing so even if it popped up in Device Manager, I wouldn't be able to manually update the drivers =/
I tried MTP both with and without USB Debugging, although it also gives the option for PTP.
At this point do you think I should unroot and go back to stock? It's not been recognized on three computers now! =[
Are you using the stock cable? My computer wouldn't recognize mine without it.

Both the stock cable and a generic cable.
Similar problem
Similar problem as the OP. And hi guys, it's nice to be on these forums.
My device, when I plug it in using the stock cable, doesn't even charge. It doesn't show up in device manager, nor does it give me a notification, or say it's unsupported and bear that yellow icon. I have tried using different USB ports, I have tried the toggling USB debugging, I have tried restarting phone, computer, and taking out battery. I have tried that PDA/MODEM dialer trick. I am using 4.1.2 Jellybean, not rooted. (that WAS my goal,, until I hit this roadblock) I have not connected it to the computer in the past, it's relatively new. I'm thinking the cable is bust.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. It charges fine through a wall outlet plug, be it generic or stock.
so guys ive come to a conclusion i think its something in the samsung usb cables try getting yourself a blackberry usb cable , TRUST ME !!! ever since i got my phoness etc... tablet and yadi yadi samsung usb cables have always seemed to give me problems i think its because they are multi data/charging cables and when using the blackberry usb cable i have never ever once encountered a problem with any of my phones sd/storage problems do yourself a favor and pick up one of those cables and you will be golden !! if not then i guess im the only lucky one :LOL here you go http://www.amazon.com/Blackberry-Travel-Adapter-Micro-Cable/dp/B004VMVSYK/ref=pd_sim_cps_2 5 bucks!
Edit also one more test boot into recovery and click in the advanced menu and see if mount usb works for you in recovery mode ??
FIX (try using a generic cable)
I actually solved it on my own! After borrowing a generic cable from a friend it booted up! The Samsung cable was just not doing its thing.
yeah im telling you those cables they provide are JUNK!!! i only use my samsung to charge because they do that well but data they are str8 CRAP!! glad you got it up and going
OP
Hope OP will have the same luck as me...pray to the Android gods...

[Q] Unroot without USB cable?

Hey,
May I unroot HOX without USB? I actually have USB but something went wrong with pins so phone can just charge. After connecting to PC phone doesn't indicate anything, it just charges. Computers says that it found any USB device which couldn't be recognized. I have all drivers. Yesterday everything worked well. Tried another cable and computer. HTC Sync also doesn't see phone.
Now I'm using CM 10.2. Phone base is 3.14.401.31, CID__032.
When I had Desire I unrooted it just by flashing zip file via bootloader from SD card. Now I did't find similar option
Edit - I tried to put some ethanol to pins and now phone indicates USB, computer recognizes phone but just for 5 seconds. After that it again writes unknown USB device.

[Q] usb/debugging not found

I've been running CyanogenMod 10.2 on my rooted HTC One for a good long while now. Since the ROM worked so well, I never had the need to connect the phone to a computer via USB in quite some time. A few months ago, when I attempted to transfer some photos, I ran into a weird and frustrating road block; my phone is simply not being recognized by any computer <see here>
I have updated all drivers
I have enabled debugging in Developer Options
I have tried rebooting Fastboot in bootloader
I have tried using the toolkits
I have tried everything I think I know
The weird part is that the phone charges via USB connected to the computer.
Since it didn't effect much, I just figured it was a glitch and I never ran into a problem again--that is, until today. I hadn't used my MHL adapter with the HTC One (only my GNexus), but after reviewing an intended installation of a Pioneer Appradio, I wanted to ensure that my One would work with the MHL. Hooking up my One to the Samsung MHL adapter (and power supply of course), I get no display on my television.
I am now beginning to wonder if the USB port is damaged. Visual inspection doesn't reveal anything, but I am curious if anyone has had this problem and would appreciate any help. Is there any way to test if I've fouled up the port?

No and no
I installed Flashify and did install CWM 6.0.4.7 to see if it would help, but to no avail
Have you tried adb with a different rom or stock via ruu? If it still dosent work then, either your usb port or your cable is messed up.

I have tried adb, but the device never is recognized.
I'm currenty transferring my TWRP backup via WiFi.
I planned on switching to CM11 and see if I can't get it to work after that.
