Links from other apps do not open in a new chrome tab, overwrite last existing tab in - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

So this seems to be an issue on my nexus 7 but not my gs4, gs3, touchpad, or atrix. If I click a web link from another app (feedly, email, reddit bacon reader, Tapatalk, etc), the page will open in whatever the last chrome tab I had open was. So if I have three Wikipedia page open and click a hyperlink from email, the last of the wiki page will open the new link I clicked instead of that link opening we In a new, fourth tab. Pottery frustrating as I often have lots of tabs open and don't want one to be over written. Is there some setting somewhere to adjust this behavior? Ideally I want all links fro. Other apps to open in a new browser tab in chrome all the time no exceptions, which is what my gs4 does. Oddly, links from Facebook already always open in new tabs on the nexus though (just want that behavior from all other apps too). Any thoughts

It's necroposting but I have the same problem with an s7 edge and the latest chrome from play store, can't find a way to fix it

Annoyances of new Opera

ATT Tilt 2
So I managed to change my tab limit in Opera above the shipped 2. But I'm starting to get annoyed by the persistent data Opera's keeping around between execution. When I open a new page external to Opera, it'll open up with the previously open tabs and open a new tab for the new page. I want the tab data to purge when Opera closes and just open with a single tab to the new link. Tried searching around, but didn't find anything specifically to this.
Help?!

Silk browser becoming useless

I'm using a Kindle Fire - 2nd generation, I believe. Under device settings, it shows system version 6.3.4_user_4120720.
While trying to view web sites like the NY Times, pages jitter all over the place as various page features load/blink/annoy. If I click on reader comments, an overlay covers the main page, and if I try to scroll through the comments, the main page BEHIND them scrolls instead. I can't post a link, but a google search for "Migrant Chaos Mounts While Divided Europe Stumbles for Response" will take you to an article whose web page displays this problem (assuming you're also using a crippled browser).
I wondered if the ancient Silk browser simple can't handle the features being added to many web pages. So, I downloaded the Firefox APK directly from a Mozilla.org page. I enabled the installation of 3rd party apps, and when I tried to install the apk, I got a message saying "error trying to parse the package". My method was simply to tap the apk file while viewing it in ES File Explorer. Is there some other step needed to install Firefox? I successfully installed K9 Mail this way, but FF - no luck.

Links not opening in Chrome

I just got my Pixel XL yesterday since I've set it up I've had this problem. When I open links, regardless of the app I open them from, they do not open in Chrome or whatever I have set for my default browser. Instead they open a sort of overlay WebView window. To clarify, these are not opening in the apps internal browsers (Like what is available in Twitter or Facebook). I have cleared all the default handlers, changed default browsers, tried from multiple apps, but this continues. I even did a chat with Google support and they claim this is supposed to happen. I have a video below of what I'm talking about. In the video I am clicking a link and instead of Chrome coming up, a window appears on top of Twitter and the link is rendered there.
Does anyone have any idea what would be causing this?

Do you have any 3rd party browsers installed or any "multi-window" apps installed?

I do not. Chrome is the only installed browser. Every app I have was also on my S7 before I switched and it did not have anything like this going on, even on the Nougat beta. I have never seen anything like this before.
Gotcha, and what app are you using to show the links to begin with? Sorry if I missed it in the OP.
EDIT: It has to be the originating app?

This happens regardless of the originating app. It happens in Gmail, Inbox, Facebook, Twitter, my Reddit client, everywhere that has links that would normally be handled by the default browser.
This is part of nougat.. kind of.
Previously in android apps could use something called web view. Basically it was a built in generic mini browser that the app developer could customize to their liking and make it look however they wanted.
Now with Nougat they are trying to keep everything looking similar so apps can now use the mini browser thing which is part of Google chrome. Sounds like those apps your using might be using the old web view still

This is not a WebView window like I've ever seen. Nor is it a Chrome Custom Tab. I have never seen anything like what my video shows.
I guess I'm just going to have to do a screen share support call with Google and hope they have a solution, even if it is a factory reset.
Have you tried opening your Google app from the app drawer, going into settings > accounts and privacy, and disabling "open web pages in app"?
Ya, this is a confusing one.

I watched your video. Yes that's different from what I get. Looks kinda cool. Looking forward to hearing what Google tells you.
A factory reset did the job. The only explanation I can think of is that for some reason my phone couldn't set a default browser. Anything that had an open to go from internal to external browsers (such as Twitter or Facebook) showed "Open in" instead of "Open in Chrome" even though my system settings showed Chrome as my default. Also, one of my default browsers listed was the Setup Wizard. I am thinking this is shenanigans from doing a USB transfer setup from an S7 on the Nougat beta.
Thanks to everyone for the suggestions!

The good news is you got it straight! :good:
Sorry to necro, but I have this problem now and I'm really not trying to factory reset after all the work I've done making this phone mine. Are there any developments on this? The WebView thing doesn't support YouTube which is killing me the most. A Google product that doesn't support YouTube...madness....
If anyone else finds this, disabling the Setup Wizard app resolves the issue. That app just tries to open all links rather than letting the default browser do the job.
I went through this exact situation, and couldn't figure it out. Here is a link to the thread i had started going through the entire process, its about 3 pages. It started with gmail, then got widespread. My end result was a reset also.

Google Inbox opens links in Custom Tabs

Hey everyone,
I had to factory reset my Nexus 5X and before that Google Inbox used to open external links directly in Chrome, but now only in Custom Tabs (I know I can then open it in Chrome but I find that tedious). I just can't find a switch to change that, can somebody help me with that?

Interesting. I don't see that happening for me nor do I see a setting for that. You're definitely opening Inbox and now Gmail right? I don't even know if Gmail has that option as I've disabled the app.

Yes, I'm definitely talking about Inbox. I just now realized that this problem also applies to other Apps like Gmail or Facebook, all apps opening external links in Custom Tabs, so apparently it's a system-wide problem. I've never had this problem before.

I know apps like Google, Facebook, and Feedly all have an option in the settings to open externally or within the app.

I know, I've explicitly changed the switch for that in Facebook for instance, but still the same.

This isn't technically a "problem". It's how Google is making things flow smoother in apps. As mentioned, most apps let you choose how to open it but Inbox doesn't appear to have that option. Not yet anyway. If you need the full Chrome browser, you can tap the three dot menu at the top and select "open in chrome" as you mentioned. But the custom tab is basically the same thing as Chrome.

Well, that's not correct.
First I flashed the last March Factory Image with the wipe command removed from the flash-all.bat file. Then I ran into a problem and did the aforementioned factory reset which I thought is supposedly the same as flashing the image including wiping. Now I finally gave up and flashed the image again including the wipe-command. Now it's back to normal again and links are being opnened again in the browser directly. I know the Custom Tab is basically the same as a normal tab, but I don't like them just alone for the fact that I can't open a link in a separate tab within the Custom Tab. Of course I know that I can open Custom Tabs in Chrome afterwards but like I said I find that tedious, for me that's just another unnecessary step that I'd like to avoid.

Question I can no longer add tabs in chrome

I have some tab groups that I had to recreate as none came over with the 4XL transfer. Now when I click the + to add a group or if I am in a group and click the + to add a tab it just jumps to the main Chrome page with no tabs and a link in the upper right to go to the tab groups. Is there a setting I'm missing?
Damn! Why doesn't Chrome for Android have a search field in the Settings like Chrome for the PC does? I know it's a more limited version of Chrome, technically, and therefore fewer settings, but still! I'm not finding anything, although I haven't checked Chrome flags.
I just tested and I was able to add a new tab to an existing group I have.
I was able to create a new group and add new random tabs to the group as well.
I know I could before as I had recreate the ones I have now but it will no longer let me. I did reboot the phone but maybe I need to reboot or reset the Chrome app?
New tabs work, but I'm on Chrome Beta...
I did manually check for app updates earlier - no idea if Chrome updated at that time or not but I don't think so. I'm on regular Chrome. Settings / About says 95.0.4638.74.

I have the same version.
Nevermind, it goes to the generic Chrome page and then when you click a link or enter a site it takes you back to the group with a new tab. Was it always this way? I don't add tabs often.

Ah. Not sure, I only rarely use tab groups, and it's impossible for me to stay on top of the latest Google changes. I think they enjoy Gaslighting us. Glad it works for you!
They are always messing with me. Like at one point in the text app it removed the add a pic icon after start typing or something and I spent like an hour trying to find out why I could not add a pic.
