Is it still possible to unlock S3 - SGH-I747M - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Currently the phone is running Android 4.3. The phone is currently locked to Fido.
Baseband version: I747MVKUEMK5
Is it possible to unlock this phone? If not, is there unlock codes like for Blackberry on ebay that are 99cents?

Only if you have an unlock code. You can usually get one from the carrier or buy one online. Yes, you can find them on ebay.

Thanks for the help! Ill look on ebay seems like its about 13-15$ to unlock the phone.

That may seem expensive but not compared to the Bell version of the i747m.

Really? Wasn't that long ago I heard about people doing this for less than $5. Ill see if I cant find it later. Think it was in the T-Mobile General sections unlock thread if you want to search through it yourself.

Well this is a FIDO one. You got a better and cheaper source?

Well there was a free way until android 4.3 came which blocked that. The current one I tried tonight ($13) just emailed me back and said he couldn't find a code for my IMEI.. Wtf.
Can either of you help me with a better source?

Sorry, I don't have a cheaper source. I was able to unlock my phones using the free method. I was lucky enough to find three i747m phones from Bell that were all running 4.1.2.

No worries. I think I might have found another few sources that are around 13-15$.

When I was searching around for the GPS fix(GPS tends to break when you switch from TouchWiz to AOSP or vice versa a bunch of times, and for me as a crack flasher this would be a bummer) I found out about the same service menu you guys use to unlock the phones. I was unable to even reach the menu, but surprisingly enough it worked perfectly with one ROM I flashed. The last step(which is used to initialize the NV data or something similar) doesn't exist in the menu, but there is an option to rebuild the NV data, which might be a perfect substitute. So it might be theoretically possible to unlock the S3, even on 4.3! Can someone please try the steps below and report back? (you will be flashing another ROM, so be prepared to do a full wipe)
1-) Download StockMOD ROM located in the Android development section, not sure if you should use 4.4 or 4.3, please try both and report.
2-) Flash the zip file using the custom recovery of your choice. Make sure to do a full wipe.
3-) Open the dialer of your phone and enter the code *#197328640#, it will open the Service Mode Menu.
4-) In the Service Mode Menu, select [1] UMTS. If you select the wrong option by mistake, press the menu button of your device and select back.
5-) In the menu under UMTS, select the [1] DEBUG SCREEN.
6-) In the Debug Screen, select [8] PHONE CONTROL.
7-) In the Network Lock Screen, select [3] PERSO SHA256 OFF and wait for 30 seconds. Then press the Menu button and select back.
Now, if you're lucky, there might be an option called [4] NW Lock NV Data INITIALLIZ, I personally couldn't find it, and this method itself is untested(can't test it myself, my only phone is hardbricked from the KitKat update and I already unlocked it on 4.1.1). If you're lucky, press that option, wait for a couple of minutes, reboot the phone and you're done! If you're not, look for the NV Rebuild option somewhere in the menus, I can't give direct instructions because I don't own a phone at the moment. If you find it, wait a minute and reboot. If it's unlocked, please report back.

I read through some of the other threads and the 4.1.1 modem is required to get the unlock option but the 4.1.1 modem will not work on a 4.3 bootloader. Users have even loaded a completely stock 4.1.1 ROM onto a 4.3 bootloader without any luck.

I can't try it since all of my phones have already been unlocked. The stock mod ROM needs the i747 bootloader and my phones are three i747m.

I have an i747M and I installed it perfectly, i747 and i747M ROM's are perfectly interchangeable, just make sure you do NOT install any sorts of bootloaders/modems/anything, that will brick your phone. As long as you only flash the zip file, you shouldn't have any problems, at least I didn't.

Well I just ordered the unlock code $8.99. We will see if it works.

Should also mention that downgrading from the 4.3 bootloaders will brick their device.

The reason I mentioned the fact that I have an i747m is that I could not load the stock mod ROM because I do not have an i747 bootloader and I would never attempt to load an i747 bootloader onto an i747m.

That's what I read when I further googled some stuff.. lots of people reporting bricking phones if they downgrade.. and it's just not worth it to me considering the unlock code was $9...
I'll report back if this unlock code comes through, the last place I purchased it from $13 they emailed me back and said they couldn't find a code for it and refunded me the money. So crossing my fingers on this place.

StockMod should run just fine on the I747M. You may need to update your firmware for it to flash, but it would work just fine on that model.

So the second place got back to me.. also informing me that they can't get a unlock code for the phone. WTF is the deal with this?
Are Samsung's difficult to unlock or what?

It's not so much about Samsung's phone but being a Canadian variant. Canadian carriers are a pita when it comes to unlocking.

[Q] Lost network after baseband flash

I bought a Canadian Optimus LTE P930 unlocked off ebay. I have no idea which carrier it was originally locked to (most likely either Bell or Telus). It came with Gingerbread, and I immediately rooted and installed CM10 M2 snapshot. My carrier is Fido (subsidiary of Rogers) and my Fido sim card worked on Gingerbread, and was working on CM10 until just now. When it was working, it showed up as Rogers rather than Fido, but that's not unusual for custom ROMs.
After seeing some suggestions that changing the baseband could help with the random reboot problem on CM10, I went to this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1842763 and proceeded to try out the AT&T V18f baseband (from http://www.mediafire.com/?nniz00g7c7b3p). I installed the zip through CWM (I have the latest, 6.0.something).
After rebooting, my phone was completely unable to access the cellular network! I tried manually connecting to Rogers from the settings menu - no dice. I tried locking the phone in 2G mode and then reconnecting - no luck. Then I went back to that mediafire link and tried out every single baseband with the exception of P936 ones, and still no luck.
Finally I tried reinstalling CM10 from scratch (full wipe and everything) and still no dice even after trying all of the above again. I even reset APN settings to default.
I have not tried downgrading back to stock gingerbread (actually, I can't even find the ROM, other than in the Unbricking guide). I hope I won't have to end up buying an unlock code for a phone that came unlocked in the first place.
Due to my own stupidity, I did not take note of what the baseband was on my phone before I tried flashing a new one, so I really don't know which baseband is supposed to be working. I fear that this baseband experiment ended up re-locking my phone or something.
I have tried my Fido SIM in my other phones and it works, no problem.
Does anyone know what I can do? Thanks for any possible help.
That sucks that you are having a problem with the basebands. Lots of people have been using my zips and literally no one has reported any issue with them before, so it seems very strange that it would have caused something weird to happen on your phone.
I will say that I haven't had a chance to test the zips yet with the new version of CWM (6.0.1.5). Probably the first thing I'd try is downgrading CWM to 5.8.2.0 just because I really have no other idea why you'd be having that problem. Maybe someone else can chime in and let me know if the zips are working properly with 6.0.1.5 so we can rule that out as a possibility, but in the meantime it's something easy to try.
To downgrade, open ROM Manager, and scroll down to the very last option from the main menu. Select 5.8.2.0 and it will flash it for you. After that, reboot to recovery and try flashing one of the basebands again.
I just tested it with CWM 6.0.1.5 and it worked properly on my phone, so I don't think this is the cause of the problem.
I have just tried using the P936 basebands, and they did not work.
With every baseband I tried, my phone can detect that Rogers, Bell, and Telus networks exist (the latter two show up as a weird number on P936 basebands) if I use 3G mode, but can't connect to a single one. If I toggle 2G-only mode, it only detects the Rogers network, and still cannot connect. This is the behavior you'd expect from using a foreign SIM in a network-locked phone. From this, I think I can conclude that both the phone's radio chip and my SIM card are in working condition.
From what I have read, baseband flashing should not affect the network lock on a phone right?
If I can't find any alternative, I'm going to have to use the unbricking guide to downgrade to Gingerbread, which I hope not to do as it's a lot of time wasted, and I honestly don't even know if it'll solve the problem.
edit: to add, I don't have an LTE sim card (was planning to get one later this week) so all attempts to connect to a network are only 3G and 2G,
I don't know because I haven't ever had any reason to unlock my device.
Unless it has changed since the last time I tried it, CM9 and CM10 do not have support for unlocking your phone in the case that it is locked (but will work fine if the phone is already unlocked). Let's assume for the moment that your phone still works fine, but was relocked by installing a new baseband for whatever reason. If that's the case, then you must install one of the LG official ROMs in order to unlock the device again.
You don't actually need to unbrick though. I'd suggest that you take the system and boot images from the unbricking guide, push them to the device using adb, then force reboot the phone -- that way you won't lose CWM in the process.

Yeah that's true, pretty much all custom ROMs don't have the SIM unlock feature and that's fine. I am assuming my seller on ebay just entered the unlock code on stock Gingerbread before shipping it (at least that's what I would have done).
I guess I'll flash on an official ROM tonight. Do you know where I can find a CWM-flashable stock GB ROM? The unbricking guide looks pretty darn complicated and I would prefer not to spend too much time on this, since my phone isn't bricked.
edit: Let's pretend for the moment that flashing stock GB will solve the problem and restore network access. Is there a way I could back up the baseband afterwards?

I can make one fairly easily, give me a moment... Edit: nevermind, it will take forever to upload it.
Here's what you can do:
Download system and boot images from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1597488
Then from either terminal emulator or adb shell, do this:
Code:
su
dd if=/sdcard/boot.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p8
dd if=/sdcard/system.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p27
Then force shut off the phone (remove battery or hold power button for long time), and before you let it boot up, go to CWM (by powering the phone holding the volume down button) and do a factory reset from CWM, then reboot the phone normally and you should be in business.
Thanks a lot for your help, drumist. I am downloading the files now and trying my luck! Be back with the results later.
Oh, one other thing. I'd go ahead and flash the Bell v11a baseband before you do anything else. That's probably the one you want to use with that phone, and you don't want to flash another baseband after unlocking (at least, that seems to be the case).
Got the stock AT&T Gingerbread ROM running - and the first message I got was asking for a SIM network unlock PIN!
Looks like flashing the baseband indeed re-locked my phone (I didn't think this was even possible).
edit: Called my ebay seller and got the unlock code that he'd used before sending me the phone. All is well!
thanks drumist for saving me a lot of time with your "simplified steps".
This is all very strange because I also have an unlocked p930 but flashing new base bands has done nothing to affect my unlock.

Yeah, a lot of sites say unlocks are permanent due to how they affect hardware switches. Well, half an hour later I'm finally back on CM10 with network enabled.
Just tried flashing the V18f baseband from AT&T. This time it didn't affect my network.
Weird...

[Q] Help, unable to unlock phone.

Hey Guys,
First of all, I want to say I search all the threads but didn't find anything relating to my post.
Some background:
I got an S3 from Telus last year, rooted it and was using mostly CM on it. I recently got the S4 and decided to give the S3 to my GF.
I knew the phone was locked when I tried to use it overseas. Before attempting to do any unlocks, I flashed carrier stock ROM on it.
I tried the following:
1) Free method - did not work since the options the guide described were not on my screen (I do have 4.1.1)
(Did my mucking around here do something to the phone? Is there a way to reset these settings?)
2) FastGSM - did not work, got an error
3) quickphoneunlock.com - Gave these guys my IMEI and they gave me a code that doesn't work. I called them and the kid who answered the phone said that it didn't work because my phone has been previously rooted. He further guranteed me that the code I got from him would be the same code I would get from my carrier.
I'm at a loss what to do now. I already switched my GF to the new SIM so no she's phoneless.
I'd appreciate any help.
Can you be a bit more specific as to which options were not on your screen? I OTA'd my Telus GS3 to 4.1.2 before I realized you could unlock your phone. I Odin flashed back to stock 4.1.1 and tried the unlock and it was successful. Mind you my phone was never rooted before (but shouldn't matter if you're going back to a stock rom?).

Okay so you say you don't get to option 4 in Step 5. When you do step 4, the menu key they are talking about is the physical menu key on the phone. I have a Telus phone also and I have done this a few times. The only thing is you need to watch the code when your doing this...
MENU NOT EXIST
PRESS BACK KEY
Current Command is 118640
If you get current command is 118630 then you have likely relocked it
Check here, I have 2 posts, one with screen shots.... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2176719&page=3
Step 3: In the Options screen, choose [3] Perso SHA256 OFF. Wait for 30 seconds after making this selection.
Step 4: Go back one step by pressing the menu key, and then back once. You should now again be in [6] Network Lock
Step 5: Here, now choose [4]NW Lock NV Data INITIALLIZ. Wait for one minute after making the choice.
Step 6: After a minute has passed, reboot
Thanks for everyone's help.
Here is what worked at the end for me:
I downloaded the following 4.1.1 Telus ROM:
After I flashed, the phone was going through endless FC. I did a Factory Reset via the recovery and the FC went away.
After flashing the ROM, the free unlock method worked.
Hooray.

Right, as long as JB 4.3 has not been flashed listen up.
You have to do some homework, I cannot tell you what to do exactly, its all here already.
You will need to do a full EFS backup ok, full using the only method that works, so you will need the tools and the usb driver,.
You will have to downgrade to 4.1.1 using Odin 3.07 or newer, that runs on windows and using a cable.
You then enter the code that is explained in the rom development thread that explains how to unlock for free, which works as I did it on my n7105.
Next once you confirm unlocked, immediately upgrade to 4.1.2 again using ODIN. If you wish to go to 4.3, use Lion Rom or DN3, or other rom that has Knox free bootloader.
Best of luck, please use the thanks button if helpful and merry Christmas.

thanks for the info,
I have done some homework and i dont want spoon feeding and maybe i didnt explain myself properly in the OP. I have done the EFS back up and a full NANDROID backup . i have odin but i am falling at the last fence of finding 4.1.1 rom. i find roms but they all seemed based on 4.1.2 or higher. i did try and put a differenet modem on to get the options i need but all the hotfil links are dead
So find a rom for your device from another country or network, no big deal, as long as its 4.1.1 and for your device, and you can set your language temporarily so you can read what you are doing, flash it, do a full factory reset in recovery wipe cache etc, then, when your running 4.1.1, get straight to unlocking, once done and confirmed, get updating to at least 4.1.2 as you don't want to stay on 4.1.1 in case of sudden death.
Best of luck, you can work it out, I flashed maybe 5 different networks roms before I realised I was flashing ones for the wrong network.

There quite a few things you could screw up from that menu. Any idea what options you hit?
Just to take a shot in the dark, you might have set your phone to work as cdma.
Try this:
-In the dialer, dial *#2263#
-Press wcdma band preference
-Press wcdma 1900
-Press the menu key
-Press end
See if it gives you a signal. It should take less than a minute. After that, be sure to go back into the menu (*#2263#) and choose "automatic" so you're not stuck on just the 1900 band.

I was on 4.2.2 and turned off the persosha256 to see if that would unlock my phone. I then upgraded to 4.3 and now I can no longer find the menu to turn it back on.

The dialer combination you used only works on stock 4.1.1 with a 4.1.1 bootloader. In order for the combination to work, you would have needed to downgrade everything to 4.1.1 from 4.2.2.
Now that you are on 4.3, you cannot downgrade the bootloader, only the ROM.
You could try using mobile Odin to downgrade the ROM back to 4.2.2 and reverse what you originally did.
The only solution may be to have the phone Jtagged back to stock 4.1.1 if possible.

The only problem is that this is a new phone. I am scared of losing my warranty if I root it. Do you know if you root the phone if you will automatically lose the warranty?

[Bootloader Unlock Code] 4.3 "EZ Unlock

Need someone to verify this for me. It says here that you can use a program called "EZ Unlock" to unlock the bootloader on the Galaxy S 3.
Can someone verify if this app would unlock my GS3 bootloader? I'm on 4.3 so mine is updated unfortunately. I would just get the bootloader unlock code from Samsung but I don't have an international model, that's the only one they would give you the BL code for.
EXTRA CREDIT I heard rumor of something called a "golden backup" supposedly a backup that exist on the phone of the older version you upgraded from, anyone?

No joy there, I'm afraid. Ol' Sam knew what he was doing with the 4.3 bootloader thing and a BL with EZ Unlock is a No-No. I just tried it now and whilst the whole process went well enough, the outcome was a hard brick. It, therefore, doesn't seem possible to 'unlock' your bootloader, at least, not for now.
The 'golden backup' is an option you see in the service menu. Not sure what it does though.

Yeah. Just to see if there was any way I could add to the body of knowledge... I'm aware EZ Unlock works with older firmware versions of the VZW model. The instructions on the site, however, suggested it works with the i747 as well. Apparently, this must be with older firmware versions as well and not the 4.3. After powering off the phone following the process, the phone just wouldn't power back on again. At least, not until, I'd inserted my debrick card and done a firmware restore.
I know I've seen the golden back function when accessing the service menu via *#197328640#. Never had to use it though so I wouldn't know if it does back up from older firmware.

Well, your failure has become my knowledge lol. I'm still really interested in the learning about the "golden backup" though. I wonder if the Galaxy S4 unlock procedure would work for us? I may play around with it.
and glad you knew about the SD De-brick. I thought you just haphazardly tried used EZ unlock :silly: so the SD-Debrick works on 4.3?
Honestly, I've read a lot of stickies but most of the OP's don't mention things supporting 4.3 or not, so it makes trying things out a little tougher. Is there a "back to stock" 4.3 guide? I assumed that's what you did when you bricked. Every 4.3 forum/guide I find is all like (4.3 beware this and beware that!) lol

Oh! I wouldn't risk "bricking" my phone if I wasn't reasonably sure I could recover. In fact, I've "intentionally" bricked this particular device in every way you can imagine just for learning purposes. I really think an unlock exploit is possible and we may be closer to one now than we know. Indeed I feel Touchwiz 4.3 has been unduly vilified because of the secure bootloader and other than the absence of a free unlock option, it's a major improvement on previous versions. I haven't seen the S4 unlock procedure. Can you send me a link to any thread on this?
There are a couple of threads dealing with recovery and return to stock for the 4.3. The first is a guide on how to recover from a hard brick caused by flashing the wrong bootloader. That was where I got my debrick file from ...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2549068
Whilst the second is a guide on returning to factory stock (4.3) firmware via custom recovery ...

"I REPLIED TO THIS AT WORK FRIDAY, WONDER WHAT HAPPENED"
Thanks both you guys, I'm actually not concerned with warranty though. I'm ultra careful so I've never used once so far for something I broke on a phone lol.
And thanks for the stock guide pckarma, probably wouldn't of found that on my own. also would you 2 know if flashing any i747 rom with cmw/twrp would work on my phone with updated bootloader? (being that I don't flash a different bootloader of course lol)

Yes, it should work - as long as you are not flashing a non-compatible bootloader. I noticed also from the development threads that someone has now put together an Odin flash-able image for 4.3

The only compatibility problem I had was with the old TWRP version which I knew doesn't work with KK ROMs, just updated to the new TWRP and Kit Kat flashed fine. And "development thread"? You mean one of the stickies their?
