Wireless Charging info in root system files? - G3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am hoping a dev will chime in to help. Where would I find code on wireless charging on an AT&T G3? Multiple members have ordered wireless charging backs with the correct pin configs and cannot get them to work on Qi or PMA. I am wondering if AT&T has disabled something in the system and hoping we can alter this to allow wireless charging. The interesting thing that leads me to believe this is the case is a member pulled a working coil from a Galaxy phone and placed it on the contacts of an AT&T model and it still will not charge or even recognize the charger. Something has to be disabled. HELP Please!!! TIA

Coils could have been damaged when he took them out

Probably somewhere in /sys/devices/virtual/input/
I'm not too experienced with the android file system but I may look into it when I get my wireless charger. Also very risky editing system files without out a recovery to restore a backup right now.

I really have no idea what I'm looking at, but there is a file called quick_cover_status in /sys/devices/virtual/input/lge_touch. Maybe the G3 has to be told a cover is attached to allow wireless charging?

I was the one who removed the coil from the galaxy and tried it on the g3. I definitely didn't ruin the coil cause I put it back into the galaxy and it's charging right now.

I never removed the coils from mine and it didn't work. I was going to if it did to put it in a another back but it never worked so I didn't touch it.

Well I tried something else today. I was thinking if AT&T had it locked down to only work with the Circle Case, it might be able to be tricked into thinking it was on. I put the wireless charging back on the phone and used a magnet to activate the screen like the Circle Case was on the phone. Even when doing this, the phone will not charge on the Qi charging pad. So if it is locked down by AT&T, there may be some other magic I'm missing. As of now though, I am betting I have a back that isn't functioning properly. I have a RMA to send it back but I think I'll wait a few days to see if others get theirs and if they also do not work. If no one else's work, I just do not think there could be that many malfunctioning backs.
One other thing, has anyone tried NFC with the back? Since the coil in the Qi charging back has NFC as well, this may give us an idea. If NFC works, something is up with AT&T.

Wireless charging mod.

I cannot wait for the official galaxy S3 wireless charging kit to come out.
I got inspired by the Galaxy mod that was done by using parts from a Palm Touchstone cover.
ww.qianqin.de/2011/09/28/high-waf-inductive-charging-mod/
I am pretty sure, that I don't need to do an intrusive operation as the one in the link - I believe that Samsung made pins ready for it under the cover.
Does anyone know what the two 'pins' that are exposed to the left of the battery are for?
Thanks!
There are countless threads regarding the "pins", wireless charging kits, and that mod.
I have a touchstone. And a back, and would like to see if anyone has applied this to the S3 and made it work

I have a feeling the wireless charging module will interact somehow with the two pins next to the battery. I was planning on attempting this mod using these pins but without a multimeter i am unable to tell whether these pins can be used and which way round to wire them up. If anyone can assist i would be grateful.

Yes. Countless threads about the mod for the Galaxy S, but I haven't been able to find anything about pins on the Galaxy SIII.
- Maybe I'm just bad at searching, believe me I have tried!
I also would love to know if and how someone gets their sgs3 working with the palm touchstone! Hope it is not too difficult!

I have finally managed to find a page that claimt that the two pins next to the battery indeed are for wireless charging.
ww.trustedreviews.com/samsung-galaxy-s3_Mobile-Phone_review
Only problem is, I don't know Trusted Reviews - so I don't know how 'Trusted' they are?
All I need now is to find out which pin is 0V and which is +5V. (I'm pretty sure that the current is the same as the Palm cover provides.
Every accessories are always made for on pin, hdmi, wireless kit etc. Always Samsung market tactics.
I wish you'll do it.

Yes it works, it will be a little slower, im only seeing 450mah going in as opposed to about 1000mah
But that doesnt matter in the slightest as i mostly charge overnight
that is great news! That does not look too difficult and it looks as NFC is not touched. Just the translation is difficult and not knowing what samsung wireless charging is about.
I also wonder how snug the fit is after adding the magnets from the touchstone back cover?
I will post details soon when i am back home

I found this! He looks like he did a great job. I am just curious if he had to solder anything to the phone?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uAqP3T_Mbzg
yes he did, i'm gonna try it with just tape - his solder blobs seems to be huge and because of the the cover makes this bulge... maybe then it will fit perfectly
the samsung wireless charger looks nice but i like the idea with the magnets of the touchstone!
please post pictures and a possible video. This is so interesting!
i'll do as soon i get the touchstone kit and have some spare time to do this (hopefully on sunday...)
what happens when you place an induction charging compatible device on an induction cooking range? Will it charge the battery, or will it overload the circuitry and destroy the phone\battery?
I wonder what happens when you plug in the phone with usb while it's inductively charging.

I would think they would work together or one would be disabled by the other. Don't think they would allow both if it could cause damage.

Sprint's backplate covers the inductive charging leads - Successful Mod!

Which is one feature i really would have liked.. but popping the back open, I see the two leads for NFC, but the two leads near the right side of the battery for inductive charging on the international version is not on the Sprint version.. sad panda face
-- UPDATE -- Successful mod
I had to order a Sprint specific backplate from ebay
So I got the Nexus Wireless Qi Charging Orb.. and I drilled two small holes in the spare Sprint backplate I had.. I then proceeded to use some copper foil, folded it up a few times, and placed them in the hole with the sticky part on the housing. I then made sure the bottom of the folded copper was down enough to make contact with the contacts on the motherboard. Closed it up and then placed the receiver in the holes with the copper foil. Placed on the Qi charger and boom.. Wireless charging..
I did it this way so I can replace the middle housing and it won't look like I modded the phone if I need to take it in for repair.. Also, I can charge it with the Seidio Surface case on.

similar to wireless charging, but you lay the phone on a Charing Mat, and without the cords, the phone starts to charge .
Though OP, you're saying that it can't be easily fixed, with a Replacement of the cover? is that it isn't literaly on the phone itself?

I have the T-mobile and am about to modify mine for wireless charging just like my Verizon S3 is... It has already been confirmed working so I know that the T-mobile version has the same pins as the International does (which is GREAT) but I think it may require some stronger magnets this time around. I think this can still be done I have to ask some folks I think you can run a connecting line to the battery connections through using copper tape, if this is so we just need someone with electronic know how but google copper tape you will see its thin conductive tape that can lead anywhere Im wondering if this mod can be done that way..
Ps can someone take detailed pics of the back of the phone with cover off, with the battery in and out thanks Im trying to think of a solution

I dont know but sprint really *ucked this model up if they would have left it alone like tmobile we would have been fine Im looking for a solution to the wireless charging but i dont know if its going to be possible all because sprint wants to be different and difficult. Ive been with sprint for 15 years but my patience is wearing thin.
Im still going to attempt a wireless fix though
whats this need yall help
Can someone help me, I dont have the phone yet so im trying everything in theory, to get wireless charging going. so I have questions!
What is this box
Whats the box for it doesnt look like nfc or a speaker or a microphone so Im hoping its tied to some sort of wireless charging, maybe a cover with the charging pins underneath (wishful thinking)
Personally I think wireless charging is overrated. There's a cable plugged in somewhere to get the pad going. And you can't use the phone while it's charging. Well, inconveniently you can. And it charges quicker via a cable.

Wireless charging confirmed working on our T-mobile S4

Hey guys, don't know if people have done this already, but I just got a T-mobile S4 for testing this weekend and I wanted to find out if the wireless charging port was enabled since I've done the touchstone wireless charging mod on my S3 and note 2.
It was especially a PIA on the note 2 since T-mobile, in all of its corporate and engineering wisdom, decided to disable the feature for the Note 2, even though it was enabled for the S3. So for those of you who don't like to dissemble your new phone and solder on a tiny PCB, you'll be happy to know that I confirmed that wireless charging ports on the S4 is indeed enabled.
I took a pack of 4x AAA battery assembly, which provides ~4.7v of DC power, and connected to the charging port in the back. The small pair on the left is the charging port, the pair on the right is supposedly NFC, even though the NFC antenna is located on the battery for S4.
As you can see from the pics, the "the phone is now charging wirelessly" notification pops up when the circuit is live, which is pretty annoying IMO and can't be disabled (that's why we have custom roms right?)
I haven't gotten a chance to install the actual touchstone wireless charging receivers on the back yet, as this is a test unit that I have to return, but I don't imagine this to be too different than on the S3. There will be a slight bulge, but it'll be worth it.

Just follow the instructions from this thread (it's for an S3). The design for S3 is pretty similar, so it should work. Remember the positive pin is on the left, negative (ground) is on the right.
Also note that the touchstone mechanism is not Qi compatible, so it wont work with the newer charging mats for Nokia or HTC.
And always remember to perform these mods at your own risk.

Did you install any receiver on the S4?
I didn't mean to confuse anyone, I only confirmed that it is POSSIBLE to perform the mod. I used a 4.7v DC power supply to test if the wireless charging pins on the back are live, which wasn't the case for T-mobile note 2 so I had to check to make sure.
If you already have a Qi charger, you can get one of these receivers and connect it to your phone, then you'll be able to charger with your mat
http://www.ebay.com/itm/qi-Wireless...l_Phone_PDA_Chargers&var=&hash=item51abef6de9
But I would argue that the touchstone method is superior to qi if you plan on using it in a car, as the magnets keep the phone in place is it's really convenient to connect/disconnect when you're driving.

Samsung will be officially supporting wireless charging for the S4 through accessories. The ad for the pad and back wireless charging cover is already listed on the promo S4 accessories page. http://www.samsung.com/global/microsite/galaxys4/
Though there seems to be no price or date yet.
Of course there will be 3rd party wireless charging solutions as well.

can anyone confirm or deny wether or not the palm touchstone + receiver will trickle charge the GS4 after it is fully charged ? (or does it completely cease charging until the phone is physically picked up and replaced ?)

It seriously only took 5~10 minutes once I'd figured out which way to put what.
I have the photos set up and just need to put notes on them explaining what I did.
Will post them when I get home tonight (12am CT)
Ummmm, from everything I read the pins you have it hooked up to are NOT the ones for inductive charging, the gold ones on the right are......
I could be mistaken however. I remember the s3 used those pins, but I've read in a couple places that the ones made specifically for inductive charging are the ones on the right above the battery.

the smaller set is wireless charging, the larger set is presumably for additional NFC antenna (although I measured no resistance in the circuit with my voltmeter), as the back cover seemed to have a carved out area for a NFC like the Note 2 did.
Although the S4 battery says "NFC" on it, which seems like samsung made a last minute decision to put NFC on the battery instead of the back cover... oh samsung ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Nope, the NFC is in fact in the battery, the same way Samsung has been doing it for years now. They made no change.

Qi stopped working?

I have a t-mobile G4 and have been using qi pretty much as soon as I received the phone back in the beginning of June. I have the AliExpress sticker and another from Amazon, one on the brown leather back and another on the red leather back. About a week ago I noticed my phone wasn't charging over night so I thought maybe I just didn't place it properly but I found it just totally stopped working. I have 2 TYLT chargers and 2 Nokia puck chargers I've tried and no luck. My wife has a G4 as well so I swapped backs with hers and they work just fine.
Any ideas on a fix or anyone else with the same issue? I tried doing a hard reset already thinking maybe something set it off but that didn't help. NFC is working fine thankfully.
Any helps appreciated! Thanks
Her back works on your phone, your back dont work on your phone.
Sounds like your sticker died, they are like $3 now, just get another from amazon or ebay.
That or the alignment is off.
Appreciate it, thank you both. I tried the alignment first and that didn't work at all. I have another qi sticker coming tomorrow so hopefully that works for me. I just don't think thats the issue, I guess I didn't make my self totally clear in the beginning. I have 2 different backs for the G4 (brown and red both with qi stickers) neither work for my phone but both work on the wifes.
Huh... how do the contacts look on the back of your device?
Ok so I ordered 2 Qi stickers from Amazon and put them on a replacements. Neither work for my G4 but both work for my wifes. Im just guessing but doesn't that pretty much mean somehow my Qi is dead? I know if I get tech support from Tmo they probably won't deal with my issue or know much about it.
Does Tmobile sell the Qi case? If so, I would go there and have them install it and test it, play dumb, and ask for a replacement.

Good idea player, I saw they have the quick circle case so maybe I'll give that a shot!

The TYLT charger and the Motorola puck charger both have indicator lights. They both light up and show that Qi is activated but the phone simply doesn't receive the charge. I throw the same cover on the wifes phone and it's fine. Drives me nuts

Don't bother. I've got the exact same problem as you, except for the fact that my charger lights don't indicate that there is anything there to charge. It's like there isn't a sticker there. With the QI case, and also with my 3rd party sticker. The QI case, which I already owned, doesn't work. It does however work on my girlfriends G4 (and her working QI case, doesn't work on my phone) As far as I'm concerned, the wireless charging circuitry has died. I don't know why. But I did have a 3rd party sticker, but frankly, why should that be the cause? The wired charging circuitry has this sort of protection built in and wouldn't blow because you're using a charger from amazon, so these issues wouldn't occur.
I looked at the G4 teardown on Ifixit, and there is a separate chip on the main PCB of the G4, which controls the QI wireless charging. It is of my belief that this chip has failed, and to fix will require a main PCB replacement. IE a new PCB which contains the SOC/RAM, the chip for the nand flash, the modem, etc etc. I think that sort of repair is generally considered beyond economical repair, and a replacement device will typically be issued, although sometimes if this issue was happening on a larger scale, they might literally just swap out the main PCB for a new one to save a lot of money from wasted housings/screens etc. But on a smaller scale, the man hours to replace the PCB, typically costs more that it's considered worth to just give you a new device. I did do a factory reset as well, just to be sure there wasn't some weird glitch in the firmware that made it appear as if it wasn't charging. But right now, I'm satisfied that the QI chip is dead, and at least a replacement main PCB is needed to resolve.
I'm going to be sending my device in for repair at some point in the near future, I'll post back once I've done that and it's completed, and let you know what happened. However with this touch screen grounding issue becoming uncovered, I am considering waiting for a bit longer, and maybe once the problem has been officially addressed, then I'll send my phone in for repair or replacement..
Similar thing happened to me, I described this in many of the threads several weeks ago. Was very wary that the charging circuitry was fried somehow, and with your post describing the teardown, I'm convinced. What a pos!
I described my initial thought process here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=62234065&postcount=27
Sad to say hardware failure is a realistic possibility.

And just like that, my second G4's charging circuitry is dead! Unbelievable. Poor showing, LG. This is literally 3 weeks since getting the brand new replacement through my carrier. The first one died within half a week of starting wireless charging.
BTW, the touchscreen issues are much improved with my 10n update on T-Mobile. I may just switch over to wired charging and turn it in for a warranty replacement later. My first had a pink hue on some photos and this one is not so bad.
Having the same issue here... What have people been doing to have this resolved? Going through LG support channels for replacement?

I went through my carrier for the first onebecause I'm on lease and was in the first 2 weeks with free return. If you own it, LG support channel will probably have you do a warranty return.
Glad I found this thread. I replaced my original G4 due to the wireless charging stop working. Now my replacement one has the same problem. Just messaged with Verizon and they're sending me out yet another replacement. Sort of a pain to swap everything over, but glad I can get working hardware.

Do you know when each of your phones was manufactured? My first was 5/2015, my second was 6/2015. It's on the label underneath the battery on my T-Mob version.
Not sure how they intend on preventing this from happening again and again. If the circuitry design is just bad and susceptible to this happening, I'm afraid it will happen yet again.
Maybe if LG or the carriers keep hearing about this they might actually investigate. But an actual fix to a hardware issue? I'm sorry to suggest they probably won't ever admit to it, much less fix it. It took a ridiculous amount of press for Apple to admit to Antennagate, and their fix was a stupid TPU bumper.
I've been using LG wireless charger with the G4 and a wireless sticker for 2 month. and now it stop charging wirelessly . I would think that the Qi chip is fried , but how come when I switch off the phone and put it on the wireless charger doc , the phone will startup ? if chip is fired then it should not work . if the phone switchs on by the wireless charger then it does receiver the power. I suspect this problem is software based.

Good point. Are you running stock? Rooted?
I am running stock with V10c-EUR-xx version. I have a friend with same model. I tried to switch back covers with him , to his device on same charger , and his device charge with my back cover on the wireless charger. so I guess it has some thing to do with my phone. today I tried to use it at the office while listening to music from head phones. because I can not place it on the charger while the head phone jack is connected , i tried to use it in horizontal with an eraser to raise it to the charging spot , it worked for a while before the big quit of charging. maybe I made some mess ?

Wireless Charging Issue Update 13B

Anyone else having issues with wireless charging since the 13B update? I do not if it is just coincidence or not but both my wife's and my G4 refuse to charge through wireless. This problem seemed to begin after both phone's were updated to 13B. The light on the charging pads does not even come on. In the case of my G4, I have actually wiped the phone after the 13B update and still encounter the issue.
You should check to make sure it's not that the sticker on the back has stopped making contact with the wireless charging pads... All of mine have consistently stopped working after awhile because of that, however, if I take the sticker off and press it to the contacts physically it still works.
Although after fighting it for weeks I've given up on wireless charging for this phone.

Hardware issue is a possibility but, I have two LG G4's here that both stopped working at the same time. I experience the issue on multiple charging pads also. This was right after both phone were updated to 13b.
I'm on 13b and my wireless charging works as well as it ever did, which isn't spectacular. I'd say 1/10 times I wake up and its not charged. I even bought the official flip cover case with qi as I originally blamed my sticker back application skills.... but both work equally crappily....
Wireless charging on my 13B is rock solid. FWIW this is the wireless charger I use: http://www.amazon.com/Wireless-Yoot...9605910&sr=8-3&keywords=lg+g4+yootech+charger
As long as I ensure that it is steady green on the charging light by properly aligning the phone to the pad, I have never had an issue with it not charging properly.
I am not sure why I am still having issues. I did a battery pull on both phone and they started charging. But now half the time neither phone charges or I will wake up with the phone only partially charged. I just find it really hard to believe that both phones are having issues with two different chargers at the same time and that it happened right after I updated to 13b.
This is the charger I am using: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00JA7HNZO?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00

OK stupid question but does it charge regularly? Maybe you have battery issues.

If I plug either phone in using the same cable that goes to the charging pad I have no issues.

Thats what I figured, but had to ask. Have you tried charging it with the phone off? Could be the new software requires a greater amperage than before so charging with the phone on could cause issues. I know your charger comes with its own USB cable but what about the actual wall wort? Are you using the standard LG wort? Im just drawing at straws, but hopefully something gets your issue fixed. Other than that I guess at this point, since you already tried different chargers you could see if replacing the Qi sticker in the phone has any effect.

I will try tonight charging with the phone off, and I do use the wall plug that came with the phone. Thanks for the help.

The LG G4 doesn't support wireless charging unless the NFC sticker on the back cover is changed out for one that is NFC/Qi charging capable. Look at the NFC sticker on the inside of the back cover. If it only has one section of the sticker with two metal pads, then it's only NFC capable. There should be two sections / arms with two metal pads on the sticker. one for NFC and the other for wireless charging. You can buy a new pad online for $10. My Verizon LG G4 didn't come with the wireless sticker , only the NFC one. See the picture for details of the NFC/Wireless charging sticker. :good:

I bought a new sticker that had both NFC and QI, and it was charging without a problem for a couple months. Now mine does not work at all and my wife's G4 only works sometimes.
