Hey guys, don't know if people have done this already, but I just got a T-mobile S4 for testing this weekend and I wanted to find out if the wireless charging port was enabled since I've done the touchstone wireless charging mod on my S3 and note 2.
It was especially a PIA on the note 2 since T-mobile, in all of its corporate and engineering wisdom, decided to disable the feature for the Note 2, even though it was enabled for the S3. So for those of you who don't like to dissemble your new phone and solder on a tiny PCB, you'll be happy to know that I confirmed that wireless charging ports on the S4 is indeed enabled.
I took a pack of 4x AAA battery assembly, which provides ~4.7v of DC power, and connected to the charging port in the back. The small pair on the left is the charging port, the pair on the right is supposedly NFC, even though the NFC antenna is located on the battery for S4.
As you can see from the pics, the "the phone is now charging wirelessly" notification pops up when the circuit is live, which is pretty annoying IMO and can't be disabled (that's why we have custom roms right?)
I haven't gotten a chance to install the actual touchstone wireless charging receivers on the back yet, as this is a test unit that I have to return, but I don't imagine this to be too different than on the S3. There will be a slight bulge, but it'll be worth it.
How do I put this mod in use

Tried it with my Qi charger from Energizer and it's doing absolutely nothing.

Just follow the instructions from this thread (it's for an S3). The design for S3 is pretty similar, so it should work. Remember the positive pin is on the left, negative (ground) is on the right.
Also note that the touchstone mechanism is not Qi compatible, so it wont work with the newer charging mats for Nokia or HTC.
And always remember to perform these mods at your own risk.

Did you install any receiver on the S4?
I didn't mean to confuse anyone, I only confirmed that it is POSSIBLE to perform the mod. I used a 4.7v DC power supply to test if the wireless charging pins on the back are live, which wasn't the case for T-mobile note 2 so I had to check to make sure.
If you already have a Qi charger, you can get one of these receivers and connect it to your phone, then you'll be able to charger with your mat
http://www.ebay.com/itm/qi-Wireless...l_Phone_PDA_Chargers&var=&hash=item51abef6de9
But I would argue that the touchstone method is superior to qi if you plan on using it in a car, as the magnets keep the phone in place is it's really convenient to connect/disconnect when you're driving.

Samsung will be officially supporting wireless charging for the S4 through accessories. The ad for the pad and back wireless charging cover is already listed on the promo S4 accessories page. http://www.samsung.com/global/microsite/galaxys4/
Though there seems to be no price or date yet.
Of course there will be 3rd party wireless charging solutions as well.
ive got a palm touchstone but what receiver do i need to buy to have my GS4 work with it ?
also;
can anyone confirm or deny wether or not the palm touchstone + receiver will trickle charge the GS4 after it is fully charged ? (or does it completely cease charging until the phone is physically picked up and replaced ?)

the link above is the thread with a tutorial on how to do the mod for S3, should apply to S4 as well.
I can confirm that it trickle charge S3 and Note 2 ( if I understood you correctly, it will keep the phone charged as long as it's on the touchstone base), shouldnt be any different for S4.

Took the Qi wireless receiver pad from my Galaxy S3, had to slightly tear it apart to reverse the little gold inserts that create the contact points for the wireless battery charging and now have a fully functioning wireless charging Galaxy S4 !
Saved myself quite a bit of money doing that.

It seriously only took 5~10 minutes once I'd figured out which way to put what.
I have the photos set up and just need to put notes on them explaining what I did.
Will post them when I get home tonight (12am CT)
Ummmm, from everything I read the pins you have it hooked up to are NOT the ones for inductive charging, the gold ones on the right are......
I could be mistaken however. I remember the s3 used those pins, but I've read in a couple places that the ones made specifically for inductive charging are the ones on the right above the battery.

the smaller set is wireless charging, the larger set is presumably for additional NFC antenna (although I measured no resistance in the circuit with my voltmeter), as the back cover seemed to have a carved out area for a NFC like the Note 2 did.
Although the S4 battery says "NFC" on it, which seems like samsung made a last minute decision to put NFC on the battery instead of the back cover... oh samsung ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Hi,
I just got my Note and I have a Powermat laying around: http://www.powermat.com/mats/home-and-office-mat.html
Now it comes with these cubes to charge device: http://www.powermat.com/media/catal...08d6e5fb8d27136e95/p/m/pmm-xxx-powercube2.png
that has a standard microUSB, is it Ok ta charge the Note this way?
it shouldnt be a problem if the current output is enough. if not the phone should just refuse to charge, i dont see any danger, but i could be wrong.
hope that helped.....
by the looks of that, wouldnt you get better more energy efficient charging by using a standard wall charger?
Its not like you can just pickup the phone and run, you still have to unplug that device that looks like it gives power to the phone, whats the difference between that and just having a plug in a wall for the phone?

Lol. Exactly what I was thinking...
TouchStone Possibles works with PowerMat - Touchstone on AT&T I717
Yea it should be fine. I have an i717 and i actually followed the MOD located here by XDA - memeber DGFRIEDL. "GALAXY NOTE TOUCHSTONE MOD" - It was slightly difficult for me to get going at first. His directions are exactly correct, even though he has the international version. However if you do try this mode pay special attention to the FOIL and it's positioning on the coil. It has to always remain on the exact same plane.
I would guess that the PowerMat Uses the same technology as the palm touch stone in order to charge it's devices. So theoreticly. You could mod your phone to accept the touchstone coil. then instead of using the touchstone you could use your power mat. Let me know how it works if you try it!
Or let me know if you have any questions about the Touchstone Mod, as i'm probably the first person to try this on an i717 Model.
I cannot wait for the official galaxy S3 wireless charging kit to come out.
I got inspired by the Galaxy mod that was done by using parts from a Palm Touchstone cover.
ww.qianqin.de/2011/09/28/high-waf-inductive-charging-mod/
I am pretty sure, that I don't need to do an intrusive operation as the one in the link - I believe that Samsung made pins ready for it under the cover.
Does anyone know what the two 'pins' that are exposed to the left of the battery are for?
Thanks!

I have a feeling the wireless charging module will interact somehow with the two pins next to the battery. I was planning on attempting this mod using these pins but without a multimeter i am unable to tell whether these pins can be used and which way round to wire them up. Yes it works, it will be a little slower, im only seeing 450mah going in as opposed to about 1000mah
But that doesnt matter in the slightest as i mostly charge overnight
that is great news! That does not look too difficult and it looks as NFC is not touched. Just the translation is difficult and not knowing what samsung wireless charging is about.
I also wonder how snug the fit is after adding the magnets from the touchstone back cover?

yes he did, i'm gonna try it with just tape - his solder blobs seems to be huge and because of the the cover makes this bulge... maybe then it will fit perfectly
the samsung wireless charger looks nice but i like the idea with the magnets of the touchstone!
please post pictures and a possible video. This is so interesting!
i'll do as soon i get the touchstone kit and have some spare time to do this (hopefully on sunday...)
what happens when you place an induction charging compatible device on an induction cooking range? Will it charge the battery, or will it overload the circuitry and destroy the phone\battery?
I wonder what happens when you plug in the phone with usb while it's inductively charging.

I tried the Palm inductive charging mod like I have on my Galaxy Nexus and like people use on the SGSIII, and it does not register as charging. I didn't use the two pins underneath the cover, I tapped into the actual battery spring terminals. I went directly from the coil to the spring terminals with solid wire as a proof of concept and it did not register as charging. I had 5.6VDC coming out of the coil and apparently the current isn't high enough for our gigantic battery Looks like I'm going back to regular "plug it in" charging. Sucks...
I also did this mod on my note 2 but like you it doesn't register as charging. I did this mod on my s3 and it worked fine. Is it something with T-Mobile's note?

I think it just doesnt register the roughly 350mah as charging. Now that I have Perseus kernel he said he bumped up the usb charging to 900mah so it may work but I havent tried. Im guessing in stock form the Note2 just laughs at the paltry 350mah.
I keep using that number because thats roughly what my Nexus would charge at without kernel mods...

Yeah, I saw that. Before I hooked anything up I measured 0vdc on those terminals with the phone plugged in and charging. I tries those terminals first, then the battery terminals as everyone warns against. No charging in any circumstance on my device. Maybe my inductive pins and or associated circuitry was jacked up out of the box but I find that hard to believe. Im still waiting to see any Tmo Note users get it running. So far, only the N7100 has had success.

Its a shame, because I have all the necessary hardware after doing this mod to my Galaxy Nexus.
Is it possible that this doesn't work simply because of the ROM. Sort of like how we can't do multiscreen?

Nice, couple questions.
Do you use a case? I have an Otterbox Commuter and was wondering if that is thin enough to still register.
Also, will that back cover work on the Energizer Qi charging system?
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app
Thanks for the video!, few questions tho:
Does it work with a case (I imagine this will be a popular question)
Is the quality of the back cover noticeable different to the stock back cover? Or is it a completely stock totally 100% the same back cover with the wireless charging mod?
And what charging pad do you recommend?
Unfortunately I do not use cases as I just use a clear shield so I have no idea if it works with otterbox or any case.
This mod will not work with any pad. It will only work with the Palm Touchstone. I dont recco any pad as I only recco the touchstone. I like having one in my car, at the office and one on the nightstand.

It works with a few mm but not sure how that affects charging. Please dont just take my word for it. Dont want you spending 30 on a back cover you cant use. But if it doesnt work i will buy it from ypu for a major discount. Lol
I dont believe qi is the way to go. The new nexus has wireless charging like the touchstone. I wonder if its compatible?
probably not. afaik, each of these wireless charging is proprietary and most probably incompatible with each other. The touchstone will only work with touchstone products (atleast from what I understand, it's different frequencies and also component parts differences)
You are probably right but i hope you are wrong... either way i am so surprised more phones dont charge like this.

Frequencies have anything to do with it. I'm pretty sure inductive charging uses magnetic fields to charge your device hence the giant coil in the phone cover. BUT, each base is most likely specific to it's counter part coil as different size coils will charge at different rates from the magenet in the base vs the amount of voltage and amps they put through the magnet. So it would make sense if a say Powermat didn't work with a Touchstone coil.
On the other hand, the touchstone uses a standard phone charger so it has a maximum of 5V at 1amp. I do not know what power source the Duracell Powermat uses (looked a little but didn't search long) so if it were to use a higher voltage at the same amps or higher amps at the same voltage then it may charger your phone faster.
NOTE: It should also be noted that if you use a different charging source with the touchstone base you could end up generating a different level of voltage and in turn damage your phone. It's not recommended to do this. The downfall (that I have found) with the touchstone setup is that it WILL charge through thin TPU cases and my Rock Quicksand case BUT the magnet is not strong enough to hold the phone in place. Since the touchstone is angled and not flat the phone starts to slide down and charging stops.
You can always switch out the magnets so your phone sits better on the touchstone. Its easy to change and it can make a nice diference.
Just ordered one. Touchstone rules.

that's an interesting read. thanks for clarifying the differences. I skimmed on articles about different wireless charging tech and remembered a few mentions of frequencies.
If only there is a standard that can adapt or provide compatibility with other methods... but that would probably drive up costs and probably extend r&d time.

Maybe one of these cheap charging pads can be modified instead of your phone? They dont seem to have one specifically for the note 4 yet on here, but for $6 thats a pricetag you dont have to cringse about when you srtart soldering on it..

Basically you have to extend the contacts from the phone back. You don't need to solder. You can do it with double stick foam tape, masking tape, adhesive copper braid or sheeting and the adapter. My adapter has not arrived yet so I am not sure it will fit between the Zerolemon battery and the case back. I did something similar to get NFC working with my Zerolemon on my Note 2. Once my adapter gets here I will report if I am successful and the fix is safe and dependable.

Don't Modify Anything
Instead of modifying things just use this simple device available on Amazon. Make sure the output matches the requirements of your device before you purchase or it will not work. This is the one I purchased for use with my LG G3 and the ZeroLemon case with the extended battery and it works just fine. You still do not get the NFC capability, but the wireless charging works. But then who actually uses the NFC anyway?
Just search on amazon for micro USB Qi antenna or wireless charging antenna. (the forum won't let me post the link)
This adapter is very easy to install and adds the Wireless Charging / Qi charging back to your phone. Amazon has several versions, just make sure you get the one that has the correct configuration on the plug, either small side up or small side down, and you also need to make sure you get the one with the correct output. For the Lg G3 it is the one with small side down, 5v-1000ma output to make it work properly.

The Zerolemon battery covers the ports, making the standard Qi receivers not able to attach to them, that's why we need a different solution.

Actually, that is not true. I have installed the exact item I was talking about, and it works perfectly fine. The cover over the port does not fit "air tight" over the port and has plenty of room for the adapter to fit between the cover and the phone. This is why I had suggested the item in the post.

The Note 4 Qi contacts are in 2 places. The upper one, just to the side of the camera, is not covered by the Zerolemon Battery, and does not pose a problem for connecting, but the one next to the battery IS completely covered by the battery itself. Maybe I'm missing something? I don't care about NFC, but would really like the Qi charging feature. If you know of an item that would work, please PM me a link. Thanks!
In case anyone's still wanting to hack a Qi coil on a Zerolemon battery, it works just fine. Here's a step-by-step with pictures. http://traff.as/zerolemonqi

Not for a Note 4, different contacts (won't work).
I really thought I was in the G3 forum...sorry about that.
They make a qi receiver now that plugs in the charger port of the phone and then flips back to the battery door it's on amazon like 15 bucks. Place case over it to protect receiver and phone any your good to go. I'm sure this will work just fine for ya there a universal qi receiver for tablets and phones with no battery door.
Here is a pic for you.
