How do I root 4.4 s3 - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

Ok so I've been searching through the interweb on how to root my s3 which is already on 4.4. All I get is how to root and install 4.4. However I just wanna root. I've tried chainfire and Odin. Also after I did that it says super su has stopped working. But I believe that's cause th binary is old. I tried to find how to update that And I can't. I even went to the play store to do it but it just said open. Also when I go to app manager it doesn't give me the option to uninstall super su. Sooooo if you guys can help me ide really appreciate the help! Thanks.

Haha I've been having plenty of issues rooting mine as well! For SU I think you need to get SU Update Fixer (Playstore).

I just did through reading other threads. However when it says gaining root access it says fail. Then just sits there and does nothing. Meh

Then you're not rooted If you really want to you can install Odin, get a philz_touch file, and just flash a rooted stock
http://fs1.d-h.st/download/00086/tes/philz_touch_6.00.8-d2spr.tar.md5

I did mine a few days ago. I had 4.4.2 on my phone. Used P hilz touch 6.41.6 d2lte. Used Odin 3.07. Uncheck autoboot. Then go into recovery and follow philz root instructions.

Ill try to get Philz and install that. I use odin to do that correct? Well I do have stock recovery and used odin to flash chain fires auto root but it didn't work. So ill try doing it the other way like u stated.

Go to chainfires website on your phone and download the latest supersu flashable
Then flash that through recovery

Look for July 1 post with my name in it. My fat fingers can't copy the link.

There is an apk called towelroot that seems to root many Samsung phones. I tried on my S3 and it works. https://towelroot.com/. Some anti-virus software may flag this, but it is safe from my experience.

Didn't work

Hey there...
Long to short, i am in same boat! Have been all over XDA and the net to try and find a way to root me S3, Virgin Mobile (sprint) 4.4.2....
Now I spent several days this past week trying to just root the darn thing! Hvae never had such a horrbile time try to root a $#@%&'n Samsung.
I have dont the following
~Odin 3.09, 3.07 and Chainfire Auto root...then read about how 1.85 Odin, should fix this issue....which i did not root.
found some, off the wall place, tried their "Odin" ((which was in chinese, or maybe even Japanese) was set up the same as 1.85, but I could not
read it, the buttons and colors were the same, so i figured "what the heck" .... NO))
~ ALL THESE brought the phone to the point of rooting, like everyone said proir...(phone would show Chain Auto root deal was working, ... " "Rebooting in 10 seconds.'.... (already had SU apk, it would same the same thing " need to update"..." You now have 4.3 and need to find
a way to root"... or something like that
Then read here @ XDA that, those ways seem to not work.. "Need to Odin and install Philz recovery".... Did that with all th e"Odin's" above,
except the old ball jobbie... everytime it reoboots, I then try to get to recoevery, it is not there....it seems to "re-set" bootloader or something, just does not stick!!!!
I really just want to be able to get rid of several stock apps that I dont even use, nor will, and the darn things are running all the time...Thanks Samsung!!!!
Ok if anyone does have some way to do this...PLEASE let me know! Am looking into that towelroot, but not 100% about that at this point!
OH, even found some clowns out there...if you pay them $$$... they will end up sending some package or zip or even #'s, to your phone...within 24hrs..... guess you open that up... TA-DA you are now rooted, adn will be forever!!!! .... Anyone seen such a rip off! dont ytube much, but i guess they are over there... wow, are there really that many ^%#$^& weird-O's out there???
Again, any help from anyone would be more than weclomed ...
thanks

Install philz thing. And then go download the chain fire from your phone and then I believe go to play store and get the su update fixer. Then reboot into recovery and install zip from card or wherever u saved the chainfire app at. Next after reboot go to the update fixer run that. Believe or supersu might have been installed and I can't remember if I opened that And got it to update the binary or not.

At first it didn't seem to be rooted but I had to go through opening supersu and or the su update fixer. It asked me if I wanted to disable Knox crap and I did that Obvi haha.

WORKIN'
GOT IT ROOTED>>>>>
Not sure if it was "Operator Error" or me old eye balls....
I took a break for bit. When I came back, I found that doing Odin 1.85 / Philz Recovery does work!!! Found out that when you are in download, Mode, you DO NOT REBOOT. You actually go right into Philz Recovery, FORM DOWNLOAD MODE, just as you would if it was turned off.. "Home" + "Vol. UP" + "Power" once you see the blue line on top of screen, let go of power.
I did take and selected "Re-root" then "Boot to Recovery" that is what works.
(Of course I had SU already installed, so once out of Recovery the 2nd time, boom, SU was there asking on home screen what to do....
AWESOME!!!
Hope this can help others

i used both Towel root (first time) then Philz (second time) and with Philz i had auto-reboot checked and when it finished installing via Odin i just held "Home" + "Vol. Up" while it rebooted and it booted nicely into Philz recovery with no problems i guess what ever method works is dependent on your personal S3

True
Yes it is up to what works and personal prefences. Personal, I like to haev complete control over what is going on in and with my phone. Way too many things I dont need/want out in the public.
As I have said in antoher thread, was this KitKat, is the first one, from Google, with backing from NSA. They really have gone out of the way to have just anyone root there phone. Now, add this Knox in the picture, things are just starting to get rough. The good, not every John Doe will be able to do mods to their phones... The sad, NSA.. not even getting into that!!!
Certainly, this is way places like XDA, are here, and the support and response they get are great! Heck isn't that why we are all here?
Keep up the good work alll

Phone wont work anymore

Hi guys,
I'm a bit new to the galaxy S3, I'm not too familiar with most things. I rooted my phone a few weeks ago with ODIN. This was to try to get the Google Wallet to work. After numerous attempts, i gave up, and figured i would unroot my phone because of guarantee reasons. Today i went into recovery mode to wipe cache and davlik, then upon reboot, the phone stopped working. I would get the vibration, the Samsung logo, then the Galaxy S3 logo, but that's as far as it goes. I can also go back into recovery mode, and probably download mode.
I just downloaded TriangleAway to reset my flash counter, but that wasnt compatible with my phone. I also got mobile Odin, same result. I have the Videotron Galaxy S3 SGH-T999V. The only changes i have made were of the build.prop, which I have restored to its original state, though the phone still thinks its a Galaxy Nexus.
Any ideas of what i could do? I wouldn't mind wiping all my data and going back to how it was when i first bought it without the root.
Thanks guys
Forgive me if i am not in the proper section

Do i do this with the original android development section or just the android development? I cant find that tar file, so could you link me to it?
and isnt download mode using the volume down button?
I've heard about thus happening to phones without a stock rom, but not just rooting. You could try using Odin to flash a boot loader, kernel and rom. That should unbrick the phone. There are lengthy directions on xda for that. Let us know what happens, and good luck!

Thanks a lot. So after i get the latest firmware, do I use it through recovery mode? or do I unzip the file and use the tar file inside with ODIN?
Also are these the only steps to do and that should work?
I will try this tonight since i'm at work now lol

Unzip and flash the .tar.md5 file with Odin. This will rewrite your system and other partitions.
After rebooting it can take a few minutes at the Samsung logo so just let it sit for at least 10 minutes.
If it gets to be much longer than that, hold power till it reboots and as soon as the screen goes off let go of power for a moment and immediately press and hold power, volume up and home. Then release when you see the blue text flash at the top of the screen. This should get you to recovery. Wipe cache, dalvik and factory reset then reboot again.
No guarantees itll fix your problem of course but this will give you a fresh, full stock system. So hopefully it does fix uou up.

Go to Play Store and try acquiring Titanium Backup. It can only be used if the user is rooted. Try using it and if it doesn't correspond then you're not rooted. If it does then you're still rooted. I also believe if you don't have Superuser or SuperSU on your phone, then you're not rooted since those two are the "gateway" between apps and system.
Dont worry. Youre not rooted anymore. Flashing that fw in odin rewrites the system and other partitions to be just like it would come out of the box. If you're still concerned about it look for the file "su" in /system/bin and /system/xbin. If its not there youre not rooted.

[Q] Halfway Rooted If That Makes Sense

So I've ran into a huge problem or what seems like a huge problem to me. I just got a new Galaxy S3 16 GB from T-Mobile last Friday. Three days later, I rooted it. I used the instructions from this guy who I now think doesn't know what he's talking about.
Can't upload the link because I'm new but it's called "How to Root T-Mobile Galaxy S3 SGH-T999" by High On Android and it's on YouTube.
Now there's me all happy getting ready to have some fun with my new root. I try downloading a game in which I need to use Titanium Backup. It tells me that I'm not rooted. I go to Superuser and it says I'm not rooted. So now I go to Root Checker and you already know what it says.... NOT ROOTED! Now I'm thinking I should do that new software update that adds Google Wallet but it want allow it probably because it's sort of rooted. So I thought to myself maybe I should just unroot it and restart all over again so I go to some unrooting instructions. It tells me to download an app called TriangleAway which also tells me that I'm not rooted. So now I can't update software, use Kies, and at the same time, can't get any benefits from being rooted. What is the problem here and what do I do?

Did you root it? We are here if you still need help.

I've only used Odin once and found it very simple. Look for the guide that says no trip root method. All you do is simply download a stock rom that already has root injected in it. Unzip the file and you should now have some file called "root666....something".tar
Place phone in download mode. Connect usb to pc and launch Odin. Make sure the phone shows up in com window and there's 2 settings you need to select auto reboot and one other setting, its in the guide. The use pda and select the tar file and flash and the phone will automatically reboot when everything's done and you're good to go
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
I followed the video and no problem. After doing odin for flashing the recovery did you boot into recovery and flash the zip file you were instructed to install? Since it is and older video you must update the super user app that you install from the play store. After updating the app open it and it will tell you it needs to install new binaries. To your phone.

Same guy from the other video I took instructions from. In the description it says "Here's how to root your Sprint Galaxy S3 SPH-L710 or T-Mobile Galaxy S2 SGH-T999 or AT&T Galaxy S3 SGH-i747!" I have a hard time following instructions from someone who has errors in their description in addition to following instructions from his other video and ending up posting a thread in this forum.
The SGH-T999 is the S3, so that's a typo. And I know it is accurate because it's how I rooted my phone months ago. In my signature I provide all information necessary to root, including updated files (the files he links to are outdated - use mine instead). I don't know what video you saw before, but I assure you, this one works.
Odin CWM > flash Superuser in CWM > rooted.
There are only two ways to root. This one is easier than flashing a pre-rooted firmware, wiping your data.

HUGE PROBLEM I get to the point where I get to Odin3 v3.07 but for some strange reason I can't do the part where I hit start because the whole bottom part of that window is hidden by the toolbar at the bottom(Windows 7). I ran into a similar problem on Kies where I couldn't install new firmware because the bottom part wasn't visible or hidden by the toolbar. What should I do?
I've seen this happen when changing font size from the Control Panel. "Accessibility" or "Ease of access". Could also be a custom theme. Can we get a screenshot of you running Odin?

Nvrmind I hit the button using the Tab key. But now that I got done with all that I get to the part of going to Superuser and it never asks me to Allow or Deny. So then I install Titanium Backup and when I open it, instead of it asking me for root permissions it gives me this message:
"Sorry, I could not acquire root priviledges. This application will *not* work ! Please verify that your ROM is rooted and inlcudes BusyBox, and try again.
This attempt was made using the "/system/bin/su" command."
Using CWM Touch 6.0.1.2 (which is in my signature), flash Superuser 3.2 (which is also in my signature). I warned you against using the provided flashing tools from the YoutTube videos because they are outdated. Use the files in my signature. The CWM is the newest version available, as is the Superuser, which already contains the newest binaries. I didn't build these packages because I got bored, I built them because I needed them. And it looks like you do also.
You don't need to allow Superuser root access. Well, you may for some options within the app, but not for giving other apps root access.

I'm not sure what you mean by this, but if su is in /system/bin (it shouldn't be), then you need a symlink to /system/xbin. Or just flash the version I provide in my signature, which puts it in the proper place to begin with (it will remove the not working root app/binaries).
Also, if you have Set DNS installed, remove it. It has a tendency to prevent root access from working sometimes.

Sorry, I actually meant to reply to Android_Monsters as I'm still using his method.
This takes two minutes, tops. You don't need the toolkit. The toolkit is very useful for sure (easy adb, for one; odin tar creation, etc.), but I think in this particular case, less is more. Also, the toolkit contains outdated CWM/Superuser.
You are trying to reinvent the wheel. Just borrow mine for crying out loud.

My Appreciation
Big ups to louforgiveno, billard412, lorjay589, & dr.ketan - if it wasn't for you guys my phone would be stuck on the knox bootloader & even worse, still bricked! Now I'm knox free with MC2 bootloader, rooted on MK4, & rockin AOSP. Without you this would not be possible. I want to thank all of your efforts.
On my Note II the
(7) KNOXModeSwitcher.apk
(8) sec_container_1.zzzKnoxLauncher.apk
wouldn't show up using the search feature in the System/framework folder. I ended up finding them by doing an overall search in the System folder.
The full location is /system/containers/framework/... Using Root Explorer.
Just thought I'd point this out. Thanks for all the work you and lorjay89 have done with this dreaded Knox deal
Looking for some help
I am currently running Sprint's OTA 4.3 (MK4) on my Note 2. I have rooted using Odin 3.07 and CF-Auto-Root-t0ltespr-t0ltespr-sphl900.
After every reboot SuperSU is stopped (I assume by knox) until I reinstall it. Then SuperSU works (or at least pretends to).
My WIFI Trev-E Mod starts with errors, so I was looking to flash to LorJay's ROM. Which brings me to deleting/disabling the KNOX off of my phone.
I have root directory access, but when I delete the files you specify, they do not disappear, even though the explorer states they have been deleted and then only the files /system/apps location show at all. The rest aren't there.
I tried rebooting and KNOX is still there and I have to reinstall SuperSU again.
I have also rooted using Android Root in which it says root is successful as well. But with the same results.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you are going to install anther rom dont worry about knox. Put phone in download mode and use odin to flash recovery (I suggest philz 6.07.9) but uncheck the reboot option. Once it flashes everything disconnect from pc pull battery. Now the tricky part. Hold down volume up key, menu key, and power key. Now reinsert battery at same time. Ii find it easiest to turn phone upside down to perform this task. Once it boots into recovery just flash your desired rom.

So the button combo isn't working. Does that mean the flash didn't work?

And from stock MK4 the easiest method to root and such for me is just use Google Kingo Root App on PC to root. It will restart phone and then you can install from the market GooManager if you want TWRP (touch) recovery, or RomManager for CWM. I installed all recoveries successfully (haven't tried any philz yet) and can flash whatever rom from there. Less battery pulling and no ODIN necessary.
Then usually I install Titanium Backup and remove Knox and freeze or remove other bloat. Leaves me an almost clean stock experience.
Just in case anyone needs an alternate method.

4.3 Custom ROMs Keep Losing Root

I am having a strange issue on my T-Mobile Note 2... I keep losing my root access, even on different custom ROMs.
I don't post often because I can generally find what I need with a search but this one has me stumped. Could this be due to the 4.3/knox bootloader? Hopefully someone here can help. Here are all the details I can think of:
I have TWRP and generally flash my ROMs in recovery instead of Odin. The ROMs flash successfully and all other components work when I flash a ROM. Also, this has happened across at least 2 different custom rooted ROMs (Jedi x20 & Jedi Master x2).
I started out with the official 4.3 from T-Mobile before rooting and applying a custom ROM, so I have the 4.3 bootloader and can't get rid of it. I see Dr Ketan has come up with a way to remove the 4.3 bootloader on one of the other Note 2 variants (GT-N7100 & N7105)... but I don't see any way to do this on the T-Mobile version, please correct me if I am wrong.
When I lose root, I first notice with messages from my root apps saying that they can't get root access. I then check super su and it notifies me the su binary is missing and needs to be installed but it can't do it. Sometimes root comes back on its own after a while and other times I have to reflash my ROM once or a several times. I have also noticed the super su app is sometimes completely missing when this happens. I have also tried to reflash just SU through recovery but it doesn't always fix it; and if it does, it sometimes reverts to no root shortly after.
The most recent time this happened was this week... The phone lost root for a few days and stayed that way even after a few reboots. Then I woke up in this morning and saw that a scheduled titanium backup had completed. I tested my root apps and found my root access had been restored over night without any changes made by myself. The last time it happened before that, I lost root and it came back after a single reboot... but the reboot solution is inconsistent and only works every once in a while to restore root. Sometimes, multiple reboots do nothing to change the root status.
I have installed several anti virus apps and ran scans with each but the phone appears to be clean. I searched & read the threads for my ROM & searched the help forum too but haven't seen this same issue. I am open to suggestion on what could be causing this issue. If there is an existing thread, please politely point me in the correct direction & close this one.
Thanks!
EDIT 7/23/2014: Solution/Workaround found. See post 22: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=54338165&postcount=22
Ok, it just happened again. This time, my battery was almost dead, so I powered the phone off and waited for it to finish shutting down. Then I pulled the dead battery and replaced it with a charged one. When it powered back on, I no longer had root. I took a screenshot of the su app error.
A couple reboots later and I have root again.

Pretty sure powering off (be sure its unplugged from the charger)
And manually booting into recovery will still work. (Hold Menu + Vol up + Power)

Here is the TWRP thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1966105
In the thread, there is a download link that points to the Team Win site. You can find the recovery for the T-Mobile Note 2 here:
http://teamw.in/project/twrp2/123
There are several different methods of flashing recovery, you could try the Odin method, I don't think that requires root or an existing recovery.

Yes, Double0EK is right. This method will load whatever recovery is installed.
When this happened to me, the custom recovery kept getting overwritten with stock recovery.

Sent from my SGH-T889 using XDA Free mobile app
If you are referring to the root injected stock ROMs by mrRobinson, no I have not. I started out with official T-Mobile 4.3, rooted, installed recovery & flashed a custom ROM.
Root sticks for a while and then just disappears like it did yesterday. Then, a little while later I had root again. Really stange issue.
I was thinking of just backing up everything, then wiping everything and starting over from scratch.
After I wipe, I think I will try mrRobinson's 4.3 from Dec, that's the v2 you were referring to, right? I'll flash in Odin and then try to reinstall my current ROM and see what happens. Hopefully it will be more stable.

Yes, I was referring to MrRobinsons 4.3 v2 ROM. What custom ROM do you plan to flash ?
I am currently using Jedi Master X2 and it has been stable, so I'll probably stick with that unless there is something new that looks interesting. I don't mind trying out some other ROMs if you have any suggestions.

root: there are several methods to root first and mostly recommended flash Philz recovery for the D2Lte in Odin just make sure your on the latest one then root your stock rom with the option under Philz settings called Re-root(SuperSU) or you can use any recovery and flash the SuperSU zip from Chain fire or you can just use TowelRoot for the actual rooting process then download SuperSU and BusyBox from the PlayStore

I picked up one of the Spark enabled S3s as well, I Odin'ed the latest Philz set to check for root and to root in Phil's, rebooted and installed SuperSU on the play store. Had zero issues getting root on stock. Which version of Philz are you using? Have you tried to flash any ROMs? There are a myriad of AOSP based ROMs too choose from.

I've tried all these
http://www.itsaboutmobile.com/2013/10/android-rooting-software.html
Except the ones that cost. No dice. Philz could stand one source with a more detailed instruction set than "Load, run, done". I just want to eliminate certain intrusive apps without having to become an Android master programmer in the process..
Suggestions on custom ROMs for SPH-L710T
Any one have any ideas. I heard Conquest Singularity 9.4 is great, BUT there are radio and MMS issues. I also heard about the axis coming UN calibrated. Any ideas? I have rooted with Philz Touch latest no problem. I would tell anyone now with this model that it is safe to root with Philz. I used JODIN the online variation of ODIN. Worked no problem. It wanted a PIT file. I downloaded the PIT from the phone using Heimdall. Then I loaded SuperSU Pro 2.01 and again, no problem. I really only need the HotSpot to work now. I would like a custom ROM that is leaner and faster, but at least a working HotSpot.

Singularity is a awesome rom. I ran it for quite a while with minimal problems(most was just user error) As for AOSP I have been using the CM11 M10 Snapshot, will excellent results.
Philz will root it. Why hes havin issues, is beyond me. I just rooted 4 710t's with philz via odin.
Yes, the rotation is jacked up with everything but stock. Theres a bunch of guys workin to find a fix. Tried various kernels and such but a solution hasnt been found that im aware.
Hotspot- wifi router 6.0 in playstore works. Thats verified, on stock. Its not free, but its cheap.
Hope that helps.
