How do you use only the top camera? Can someone explain why this phone even has two lens? I have tried using Zoe, but it only uses the bottom lens.
In the top lens, I also have a tiny spec of dust towards the bottom, is this a concern?
The top camera is used to measure depth and is only useful in post picture editing within the HTC gallery, available on sense and gpe roms. It allows for features such as ufocus which allows you to edit where the image is focused after you have taken the picture as well as some gimmicky 3d effects to show off to friends or little ones.

The top camera IS actually a proper camera.. It is the same camera as the front facing cam on the m7. The effects are possible because of the small distance between the cameras creating slightly different fields of view. When you click a picture, a picture is clicked from both, the bottom & top cam.

When the object on focus in camera is near, the camera does a pretty good job blurring the background, but only if the object is very near.
Other than that it won't blur almost anything.
Is there any way or application to control the amount of blur in autofocus?
An example of what I want to achieve is attached.
I don't expect it to be as accurate as that pic but somewhat like that.
Anyone can help?
EDIT: the flower below is a pic I've taken. It is blurred correctly because it is near., while the guy is a pic showing what I want to achieve. If I were to take that pic with my Galaxy Nexus It wouldn't blur the background.

You won't acheive background defocus because of the lens used with the camera photosensor. It is geared for wide angle viewing because the general population takes photos that utilize this focal length. You would need a 50mm+ to get background defocus. With my 300mm set on macro I can completely blur out the background on my Alpha Nex - you will not acheive this with a 20-30mm lens.

This might or might not work, but it is free so worth a shot. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ar.com.moula.zoomcamera&feature=search_result
What you refer to as "you want blur" is just that you would like the focal lenght to be very small, generally that is "unwanted" and a by product of focus on a specific "distance". If you can achieve a decent quality photo with the part you want focused clear, that should generally be enough for a camera phone. Because... its a camera phone.. theres a reason you have cameras with footlong lenses that are worth 2k$.
Ps, if you really want blur, photoshop can do that.
Check this app out! It's really cool and will allow you to do what you are trying to. The results won't be as great as a real camera, but good enough for what you want.
My Note 2 rear camera is showing evenly spaced thin horizontal lines from the top to bottom of the screen. I've tried 3rd party apps, and they exhibit the same problem. The front-facing camera is also completely fine. What are some possible causes for the lines? And any possible solutions? Thanks.
I've also attached 2 pictures with the lines. One is at normal camera zoom, and the other is at 4x camera zoom.
I have a LG G3 on hand now, and after fiddling with the magic focus camera function, I realised that it hardly works. Every photo i take of the object has to be very close (less than 3 cm) and even than, during refocus selection mode, the slider bar is often set to Infiniti or one bar below infiniti no matter how close i get to the object. This means its impossible to blur out the background. Moving the bar downwards would just result in the entire photo being blurred out, include the object.
I've tested this on another G3 with the same object and distance, and it seems to work fine. There's more range in the slider bar to choose different depths of focus, and the pic quality is far superior to my set. On auto mode, both perform the same though. Both sets are also running the same firmware.
I've tried clearing cache and even doing a factory reset, but the problem persists (only on the magic focus mode). Its really annoying as my G3 works great in every other aspect, but this function appears to be impaired.
Is anyone experiencing the same issue? I wonder if it is a hardware problem and if i should get it fixed.

Magic Focus mode is meant to focus on something close by, that is pretty much the entire point of it. It is designed so you can vary the blur effect of objects in the background, or of the object itself to make the background look a bit clearer.
That is why it only seems to focus on objects fairly close up.

I understand, but when I'm comparing both G3s side by side taking the same shot at the same distance, one offers greater depth of focus than the other. Hence i'm wondering why there is such a marked difference in performance between 2 supposedly identical sets.

Google camera works better at the blur effect

I have LG G3 but in mode option there is no magic focus option found, and also gridline option is missing
The camera on this mobile is awesome! But at the same time, it makes things so sharp that even a small pimple will be very clearly seen.
Is there a app which can imitate the Beauty mode of Samsung Phones, and at the same time keep the Pixel's amazing camera algorithm working?

I just post edit with Facetune. Keeps it realistic looking and can edit little spots as needed.

Portrait mode has face smoothing option, you have to press the round face icon at the top, this will automatically apply them filter. However, you can't adjust it.
Snapseed is an amazing photo editor from Google and it's free. It has more advanced face editing features, including face smoothing.

That option is extremely light and almost barely noticeable. I use that plus still touch-up.
@sacthegreat Oh and another plus for Facetune is it can get closer than any other editing app I've seen, like pixel level zoom. Keeps the edits precise and minimal.
I remember getting the app on sale or with Google Play Store credit. It's worth it.

I know I heard that night sight isn't available yet, but where is auto focus tracking, top shot, and live lens? Just got my white 128gb Pixel 3 XL and none of those features are present.

They all work on my phone.
Lens, is in More. To be honest, I'm not sure how to get top shot going, nor auto focus tracking in video...
You do the updates...go to camera app and select more?

auto focus tracking is done by tapping a subject on the screen.
night sight already works, check these forums.
top shot: Open camera app in your Google Pixel 3 & Pixel 3 XL, Now take a picture with your device, Now open the picture you took with your Pixel 3 & Pixel 3 XL, Swipe up the screen until you see photo details, Now move finger left or right until you see recommended. You can pick the recommended one as the best picture.
Lens is supposed to work in the regular viewfinder for the camera, not as a separate mode. Top Shot does not work. Super res zoom does not work. Anyone know what's up with these features?

Night sight is in a modded camera apk. I know all about that.
Interestingly enough, auto focus tracking only started working in the stock camera AFTER installing the modded camera apk (CameraP3) .
But still no super res zoom or top shot in stock camera on the Pixel 3 XL.

Top shot works. Make sure motion is on (not auto). Like someone mentioned above, after photo is taken view the photo and swipe up, you'll see a bunch of photos taken with the top shot selected.

With motion set to on, it works, but isn't anywhere near as intuitive as other videos I've seen. I have to click on the preview, then swipe up, THEN click on recommended shots, then I'm able to check out the top shots. I thought you just swiped up from the viewfinder and it immediately took you to the top shot of the last photo you took.

Yeah, I've seen several videos where they show just that; they take the picture and it's there, they don't leave the camera for the preview or any of that. Some editing going on there I guess. At any rate I had expected to find it in the camera app. Same with adjusting the bokah on portraits, I expected a slider in the camera screen, not having to switch to the preview and then fiddle it from there. In other words some reviews have led me to believe I could do it both during and after taking the photo. IMO opinion thats most def how it should be. Overall the camera app isn't as easy to figure out as with a sammy where you can figure things out just clicking around. I had to do an internet search to find out how to do the top shot.

Except it is. Make sure it is on and not auto, take a picture, click on the picture on the bottom right, then swipe up. You'll see a bunch of pictures from left to right (pretty small), you can either click on one, or slide one way. Trust me, it's there. I used it last night.
From what I see, the best quality overall picture is the one you initially see (the clearest + people smiling). However, I selected some different ones because I liked the way my kids looked better in some other shots. Overall, I really dig.
Yeah, we understand it's there, the comment refers to the idea that if you have to resort to an internet search to figure out how to turn on a headline feature in a camera app the camera app GUI needs improvement. Why would I expect I need to turn on a seemingly unrelated setting called "motion on" to turn on top shot which itself has no switch enabling it anywhere in the settings? Not exactly intuitive.

Ah, true. I didn't know until this thread myself. They need to add a button that says top shot I think.
