This is simply a joke, what is up with the camera app?? It is literally slower then my old nokia brick!
It takes 4(!) seconds for the camera to open when sliding to it from the lockscreen or opening via the icon, and it takes 2 damn seconds to rotate from horizontal to portrait and vice versa, that is insane and I cannot believe Google hadn't fixed this yet. Are you guys furious about it as I am?
P.s I wanna stay stock, and I don't think I'm asking too much..
Edit: one more thing: if my camera is set to auto flash and I will snap a picture without first tapping to focus about 60% of the time I will get a blue tinted photo. If I tap to focus first the photo will come out normal, I think they've made it that way so we'll get faster capturing but what they did was basically making the camera take a picture before it identifies the correct white balance, giving a blueish resault. Basically the whole camera app is broken in my opinion.
I wish they would fix it, its really slow, I don't use it often.

You have been very slight. It takes at least 4 seconds.
The new camera sucks, not only is it super slow but it takes forever to focus if it focuses at all before taking a picture. And when the shot is taken you dont see the result on the display as in the old camera and one has to go into gallery first to see how the photo turned out.
And this stupid new menu.... It may look fancy but half the time the control is out of the display or covered by the finger. Worst menu ever and should have been done properly or not at all.
In short i hate the new camera.

R: What is up with 4.2.1 camera?!
I really like the new UI but the app it's really bad optimized, it really sucks. It's been a while now since the release of 4.2 and still there's no fix. I, personally, excepted more from Google.
I don't even like the new interface. The pop up menus suck, some of the options are always hidden behind my finger.
Hmm did Google ever revert something like this in the past or do you think they will stick with this crap no matter what?

I actually trusted Google to sort these kind of things pretty quickly as the community is very aware of minor glitches and such, but this camera app is above all glitches, and they're doing nothing..
I also miss the HDR mode in the app. The only reason why I don't change to a different camera app is the integration with the OS.
I have to say I only have one problem with the camera app and that's the ~1 sec freeze when changing orientation.
It does open a tad slow from the lock screen (~3 sec for me) but I think it's bearable. Opening from the icon seems to be about a second. Focus hasn't been an issue for me yet. The new menu can be operated by taps if you don't like having your finger in the way - or - you can just tap and hold to open the menu then slide your finger out past the icons and operate it with your finger out of the way. Finally, not having the little picture preview for the last is a bit annoying but it is far out-shined by being able to swipe to the right and see a large version of that picture (plus previous pictures) while still keeping the camera active and not having to open the gallery app.
Just sharing my opinion - I prefer this version over the previous app.
EDIT: For what it's worth I'm on Purity v4.2 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2108705)
I'm in total agreement! The UI is fine but the length of time it takes to change orientation and even snap a picture is ridiculous.

Hmm... there is a delay when you try and take a picture? I don't see that on mine unless it is still focusing or using the flash, of course.
I was taking a picture yesterday and my phone freez and restart

Tap the circle in the bottom right corner then tap to choose options only works with a finger on the screen? I don't know if my camera apk was modified to do this... it's just the one that came on Purity ROM.
Cant we just pull the 4.1.2 camera and gallery app ?
Or is it that 4.2.1 camera is hardcoded in Android due to photophere?

No, that does work on stock. Thanks, I never payed any attention to the circle in the corner. That does make the camera a little more usable.
Just tossing out there toroplus 4.2.1 ....my camera is great, perfectly fine, the rotation delay isnt a delay at all, its exactly the same delay is if i were on homescreen and rotating. Strange that such problems are noted ...

Sounds like maybe you are a new Android user. It's true, the rotation delay is the same as the delay seen when rotation other apps. This would not seem to be a problem to a new user, but if you were used to the old camera app where there was no delay at all when rotating then it clearly sucks.
As mention in the title, I have been looking for a way to get apps to take advantage of the entire screen. Most games (Hearthstone, Cosmic Express, etc.) have a black bar at the bottom even when immersive mode is active. I have used apps such as Granular and Nav Bar Hidder to force immersive mode which does work for some apps but not for every app.
Other android phones such as the LG V30 and the Samsung S8/Note 8 have a feature where they force apps to run full screen with no black bar. I know custom ROMs could fix this problem by porting the feature and I have been looking around a ROM that has this feature, with no luck.
Does anyone know of a fix or a ROM that could help?
I think the apps need to be updated to take advantage of the 18:9 screen.
That's how it looks.
Atomregen said:
I measured it, the navigation bar hight is 168 pixels and the black area hight 202 pixels. So I would say on the unfilled area, the developers are to blame because they have not optimized the apps for 2:1 screens.

Funny thing is that this phone doesnt auto centered the screen when using an app that havent optimised for 2:1 aspect ratio,
Example, game will use left area of the screen, leave a big black unused space on the right.
Sometimes the "stock" thing in pixel make the phone actually dumber,
My S8 do better handling this situation.

I agree samsung's solution is better for this issue, should have been common sense by google to do the same.
Honestly the aspect ratio is the only thing that really pisses me off about the screen. Colors, tint, blah blah blah...I don't care about. The fact that many app developers still haven't gotten off their asses to fix this aggravates me to no end. I'd much rather have the 5.5" screen of the Pixel XL in a supported format then a larger device with a 6" screen that triggers my OCD.
I know I heard that night sight isn't available yet, but where is auto focus tracking, top shot, and live lens? Just got my white 128gb Pixel 3 XL and none of those features are present.

Lens, is in More. To be honest, I'm not sure how to get top shot going, nor auto focus tracking in video...

auto focus tracking is done by tapping a subject on the screen.
night sight already works, check these forums.
top shot: Open camera app in your Google Pixel 3 & Pixel 3 XL, Now take a picture with your device, Now open the picture you took with your Pixel 3 & Pixel 3 XL, Swipe up the screen until you see photo details, Now move finger left or right until you see recommended. You can pick the recommended one as the best picture.
Lens is supposed to work in the regular viewfinder for the camera, not as a separate mode. Top Shot does not work. Super res zoom does not work. Anyone know what's up with these features?

Night sight is in a modded camera apk. I know all about that.
Interestingly enough, auto focus tracking only started working in the stock camera AFTER installing the modded camera apk (CameraP3) .
But still no super res zoom or top shot in stock camera on the Pixel 3 XL.

Top shot works. Make sure motion is on (not auto). Like someone mentioned above, after photo is taken view the photo and swipe up, you'll see a bunch of photos taken with the top shot selected.

With motion set to on, it works, but isn't anywhere near as intuitive as other videos I've seen. I have to click on the preview, then swipe up, THEN click on recommended shots, then I'm able to check out the top shots. I thought you just swiped up from the viewfinder and it immediately took you to the top shot of the last photo you took.

Yeah, I've seen several videos where they show just that; they take the picture and it's there, they don't leave the camera for the preview or any of that. Some editing going on there I guess. At any rate I had expected to find it in the camera app. Same with adjusting the bokah on portraits, I expected a slider in the camera screen, not having to switch to the preview and then fiddle it from there. In other words some reviews have led me to believe I could do it both during and after taking the photo. IMO opinion thats most def how it should be. Overall the camera app isn't as easy to figure out as with a sammy where you can figure things out just clicking around. I had to do an internet search to find out how to do the top shot.

Except it is. Make sure it is on and not auto, take a picture, click on the picture on the bottom right, then swipe up. You'll see a bunch of pictures from left to right (pretty small), you can either click on one, or slide one way. Trust me, it's there. I used it last night.
From what I see, the best quality overall picture is the one you initially see (the clearest + people smiling). However, I selected some different ones because I liked the way my kids looked better in some other shots. Overall, I really dig.
Yeah, we understand it's there, the comment refers to the idea that if you have to resort to an internet search to figure out how to turn on a headline feature in a camera app the camera app GUI needs improvement. Why would I expect I need to turn on a seemingly unrelated setting called "motion on" to turn on top shot which itself has no switch enabling it anywhere in the settings? Not exactly intuitive.

Hi
I have had phones with which I can shout photos by just tapping on the screen.
But this camera seems too limited, although photos are great.
I am afraid that if I use any other camera the postprocessing won't be so good and photos will be worse.
Any help to shoot easier with this, my new phone?
I'm confused. What do you mean by "just tapping on the screen"? The camera app has a big button on screen to trigger the shutter. Tapping anyplace else shifts the center of focus.

It's compatible. For example:
Motorola: dragging the "circle" it focuses. Touching the screen, out of the circle, it shots.
Xiaomi: touching the screen, it focuses. Then, once focused, in the middle of the circle appears a camera which if it's touched, it shots.
Don't get me wrong, the phone itself is amazing.
There are just more software issues which are on Samsung.
The always on charging status which will burn the screen
The always on fingerprint while AOD is on which will also burn the screen
Lack of camera resolution settings (actual size of pictures on 4:3 are around 2MB?!?) and pictures are not good as on Note9 or S10
And the feature that I'm missing really much is swipe on fingerprint sensor to drop notification menu down, but on the other hand, face recognition works so damn fast that I don't even need fingerprint.
And speakers could be better, they are dull, without much base.
Hmmm,
I wonder about that possiblity of burning the screen
Yes speakers could be better
But what do you mean no camera resolution settings? I don't even see 4:3 in the options
I wonder if the AOD stuff moves slightly every so often to prevent burn in.
UPDATE: Fingerprint AOD moves slightly every several seconds. I haven't tested the battery charging one since I'm testing my battery usage and SOT so I don't want to mess with my charge cycle right now.

There is aspect ratio on the top when you are in the camera (4:3, 16:9, full and 1:1) but you can't change the resolution (MPxs) in the settings, so I'm just getting low quality 2MB pictures.
The possibility for burn ins is great, trust me.

You're worried about the fingerprint symbol burning in, but not the clock on AOD? Just set AOD to "tap to wake."
My speakers are super loud and clear. But at the end of the day, they are cell phone speakers. You can adjust sound quality by turning on Dolby Atmos and/or changing the equalizer.
As far as swiping the fingerprint reader to pull down the notification shade, why not just set home screen setting to pull it down on a swipe down?

I was wrong about one thing, you can NOT change MPs in settings. But it takes pics in 12 MPs on the rear camera, except the ultra wide angle, which is a 16 MP lense. The FFC is a 10 MP camera. Are you sure you're not talking about 2 MB? As in megabytes, the file size?
And again, if you're not worried about the clock on AOD causing burn in, then the FO scanner won't either. Now the charging status I agree with.

It seems that I do not have resolution settings. I shooted for over one hundred of pictures and not a single one was over 2.5MB, with compression disabled.
About AOD, we figured that both clock and sensor light are moving so that's fine.
About swiping down, that works on home screen only, not in apps or wherever you are.

2.5MB is about right for a 12MP JPEG file. That's the size they are on all my other phones. I have to take pics for work, then compress them down under 2MB to email them. Sometimes I don't even have to compress them, because at full quality they are already under 2.5MB.
And I understand your point on the swipe down. I never thought of that.

There is still hope for both FP sensor light and charging status once they update GoodLock I believe.

I stand corrected. When I check details in the Gallery, my 12.2 MP pics are between 3.5MB and 4.5MB.
That is weird then.
This may sound dumb, but the biggest gripe I have with this phone is the power button being on the left. I'm so used to it being on the right and touching there and nothing happens!
I also wish the power button was on the right side. I loved the phone once I turned on High Performance mode and changed the screen mode to Vivid. In camera settings, I also had to change the rear and front video size to UHD.
What I hate the most about this phone right now is how high the interference is on my daily routine since Wednesday. First night I got it I skipped the gym. Then boyfriend duties are getting neglected. Boss at work is asking why I'm not getting as much done. Smh
