Switching to ART improves performance? - G3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Alright, so I was really unimpressed with the performance of the G3. Laggy and not very smooth. So, I decided to give ART a try and switched. Now everything runs super smoothly, like I would expect from a device I paid 600 € for. Can anyone confirm this?
Running stock ROM, not rooted.

Yeah, sure. However, I didn't get any improvements on the Nexus 4, so I wasn't really optimistic about it. Just wanted to share. I'll check improvements on battery life tomorrow.

I noticed it was a bit smoother . but I found rooting and freezing unused bloatware has made a better improvement however I am not on art at the mo so maybe it will improve even more if I changed it again. I expect this device to be on par with my previous htc one m8 if not better and I still think its just under on performance for the ui I hope it improves as I love everything about this phone its design is fantastic and that's come from a full metal m8

That's a weird "upgrade" the m8 is a fine device.

I'm a apple fan to I buy most flagship devices. Htc one m8 had speaker faults then had screen problems. I gave up with that so quickly but I would say it was mega quick tho to use and the CPU is clocked under the g3 cpu. So I wouldn't say a upgrade

Some of us find the M8 a poor excuse for a flagship device. So many ****ty design choices, the foremost one being the useless speakers that just add device bulk and use up real estate without adding any useful functionality. The killer for me was the placement of the black band with the HTC logo. I was always pressing it expecting it to do something. At least they could have put it on top of the screen where it would not have interfered with the user experience as much.

I thought the design could of been better it just felt to long. Good materials used I thought tho. But saying that I love the plastic on the g3 in my opinion it feels the best built flagship device at the moment. S5 is just awfull I personally think the banding around that is so dam cheap

I applied ART last night and I concur with OP. It a heck lost smoother esp between transitions.
Previously there was an annoying nanosecond delay when switching apps or waiting for my SwiftKey to appear, now it's gone.
Also the response of an app opening is almost instant too.
Give it a try guys... I'm not looking back now

Apart from losing the option to use Xposed, there aren't any downsides. Just remember that when you switch over, it can take 10-20 minutes for all the apps to load at boot. Make sure you have time to do this. You won't have to reset your phone but it will take a while before it's useable.

GNex still good?

I'm thinking of buying this phone, but looking that it's been almost 2 years, or has it already? I'm worried that buying this would be a mistake and I end up regretting. I want your opinions, I'm not willing to spend a lot on phones (my conscience says no).
I don't play much games, I'd just like to have smooth apps and browsing especially.

buy the nexus 4 instead, gnex is still good but its getting old, 4.3 could be its last update
For me it's just fine. It runs quite smoothly (much better on 4.1.2 though) and it's display is good (although, they seem to vary). If you're upgrading from a budget phone or an old single core snapdragon or something you'll be happy. If you expect it to run with the latest and greatest, though, you won't be happy.

Google is pushing to make Android less resource-intensive so that it can push some low cost handsets into developing regions. This involves much more than a smaller memory footprint. Expect an ultra-low cost Nexus handset on the horizon, along with the usual higher-end Nexus models.
It plays right into the hot air balloon project.
Apples sees it coming too, with their planned iPhone lite.
I'd recommend you look elsewhere really. The gnex isn't a bad phone, its just that for a similar price you can get a better experience.
A nexus 4 would be better if bought out right. The gnex has pretty poor battery life and the camera is fuzzy
On top of that, its almost 2 years old. Google will drop this device first out of the nexus line due to the specs alone (whenever that may be).

In my opinion multitasking is good. Battery life with stock battery is quite bad. But that's of course different to how you use your phone.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Battery life is one thing that I have trouble with on this phone. There are ROM and kernel combos that can improve it for sure. Usually with light to moderate use I cam get through a day, but I just carry a spare battery around usually just in case. Multitasking usually works fine, but every now and again if I have some memory intensive things going like games it can slow down the multitasking some. In my opinion if it is cheap enough this phone is great. I still feel it is one of if not the best looking phones still out. The buttonless smooth look just works. I have had mine a year and I got it instead of waiting for the GS3 so I could keep unlimited data and I have not regretted it at all.

Multitasking is fine. Works really well on 4.1.2.
Battery life greatly depends on GSM or CDMA. If GSM, with moderate usage it will last you the full day. I used mine lightly yesterday and I didn't bother charging it last night. Sitting at 68% left.
If it's LTE CDMA probably a good idea to get a spare battery..

The only thing I would really like from the G2 is the OIS on the camera and the double tap to wake.
I hope the awesome devs will be able to port that feature (double tap) across to the OGP from the G2.
(or LG to include it as part of 4.2.2 or 4.3 update. Crossing fingers!!!)

I think If it will be ported display would not go to sleep ever and battery of G Pro will drain very quick.
I definitely will sell G Pro and buy G2, G Pro is outdated compared to G2, bud it has bigger 5,5" screen, the only one reason to keep G Pro. Everything else is already noncomparable
G pro still exceeds in MMC & removal battery dept.
Comparison :
Screen Same :
Ram : Same.
Processor : Not a huge difference in practical situation - no temptation to change.
Volume key placement : Verrrrrrrrryyyyy Odd , Will wait to see in hands before I can give any words on it.
camera : Improved with OIS & 60 FPS. Niceee.
New themes :------ We will get It.
Touch wake screen : -----Nice but battery eater.
Flip Style window cover: we will get it for sure.
Upgrade 4.2.2: We will get it , May be 6 months later.
Last few software features : Porting can be done easily. Just waiting for someone to post rom Image Now.

Google Experience
The pricing and feature set of the OG Pro really is incredible, so much so that it even maintains competitiveness with future phones like the G2. The only reason I haven't replaced my N7000 with one is because of the rumors that there may be a G2-based Nexus 5.
My main reason for switching phones will be to get better dev/AOSP support, and the only reason I don't already have a Nexus phone is Google hasn't made one with a huge screen. The OG Pro is amazing, but the dev support right now is almost nonexistent.
It really is crazy that this phone isn't far more popular.
Well if the FCC news is accurate, other carriers are about to get the G Pro. So maybe then there will be more clientele in terms of a community.
Sent from my LG-E980 using xda app-developers app
That's always the curse of carrier exclusive phones, it limits popularity & therefore limits dev support. But I think we'll start seeing development pick up.

Thinking about picking up one

I have the galaxy note 2 right now and was thinking about getting the note 3 until I saw the side by side front panel comparisons. I have had samsung phones for years and was debating on getting the one. The phone was released 6 months ago and that kind of worries me becuase technology seems to move so fast. So my question to you guys is how do y all like it? I played with my uncles the other day and I loved the build quality and the front speakers. How good is sense?

I've been an HTC guy for years, I've tried a couple of Samsung's (Galaxy S(fascinate), Galaxy Nexus,S4) and I keep coming back to HTC.
Personally, I can't stand anything bigger than the Rezound/Galaxy Nexus. I returned the S4 because I couldn't find a comfortable way to hold it. The DNA wasn't much better (gave to my mother after a week)
The HTC one is a perfect fit size wise, I honestly don't know how anyone can use the note's as a phone... Just too big.
I may be sticking with the HTC one for a Long time, I love the build quality, design and the size (as compared to all the phones on the market now)

I came from the S3 and so far, it's a very nice phone. I really like how it feels in the hand when you are talking and I like how I can swype with one hand. As far as speed, it doesn't really feel faster than my S3, they feel about the same. Sense is fine, I use Nova as my primary launcher. Battery is good, better than the S3. But keep in mind, it's not unlocked right now and we don't know if any devs are working on it.
I have watched a couple of videos and they say the phone doesnt lag at all. Is this true? I had the s4 for a couple weeks. It had some lag here and there. How much screen time do you guys get
Sent from my SCH-I605 using xda app-developers app
I've had 0 issues with lag on this phone, the speed is pretty staggering.
i've had the phone for a week and have been very impressed with it. Battery gets me through a day. its very fast as well i haven't noticed any lag.
I haven't seen any of these high end phones lag. I'm thinking some people just like drama. Great phone. Use my rule though be happy and make your purchase based on what is on the phone assuming it will never be unlocked. I've been pretty happy using the logic. I'm unlocked myself, but also happy running rooted stock sometimes.
Long time HTC user up until recently had the sg3/sg4/
This phone is great, I highly suggest it.
The build quality i superior to Samsung, and IMO we have a much better chance of unlock root for this phone than on the s4.
I have a good feeling I'll be selling my s4 in the near future.

Re read my post. I've used an s4 its pretty much just as good. People are biased from time to time. Also as my other post said lag is more perception at this point. These super phones do amazing things. Sometimes I think my keyboard "lags" on the one badly for instance. I also realize the other factors at play. Heck people here in this forum complain about sense 5 being laggy. My point is that lag is half perception.

I'm in the same boat. I currently have a note 2 and thinking of either the HTC one or moto x. I love the build quality of the One but love that the moto x is pretty much stock android. If this phone had an unlock/root method, it would be a no brainer. I just hope something comes soon for it and then I could load a Google experience ROM or something

Maybe LG can`t or doesn`t cheat as good as HTC or Samsung with benchmark tests Lag is most of the time user app related by apps/widgets running in the background and slowing down the cpu.
I thought the device was pulling 23k in this test i think ill have to try a reset :/ dnt have much installed either

Either you got a defective phone or the G3 is a joke.

Ive worked out the problem its the extreme underclocking lg has done when the phone gets hot. Seems too extreme to me kinda put me off abit :/

Keep dreaming. Samsung will never give up the S-LAG function (It's there since the original SGS and still there in the SGS5)
I was pretty fed up with the lag on the S5 and now I'm pretty Fed up with the lag on my G3 Damn Koreans, can't you learn a page out of HTC, Motorola's or Nexus book.
I don't get it either how can they release flag ship devices with UI lag or any lag. I guess it's our fault buying it...
Anyway, I still have a faith in LG. They will fix it or ART default in the next Android release will eliminate it (Hopefully. Other brands have much worse cons with their products).

True.
This and the QHD display are the problem.
I think it will still lag in the future due to this two details.

Galaxy S5 Lags a lot more, so it must really overheat and have a QHD display also I guess.....
Maybe a custom kernel could fix this once they start to become available.

I am also hoping for this. Custom kernels did wonders for my Nexus 4.

The difference is almost like night and day for some phones. My nexus 7 ran even better with different kernels.

You can also control the colors, sharpness and brightness with custom kernels. I hope that the G3 will have big developers community so we will see some brilliant coding.
I did a reset and it seems a bit better I just hope it will get some Fix's as the phone it self is amazing

Same here. Rather love the hardware, it's just the software that's lacking.
Well here's my benchmark test on my g3

That's a lie. I actually own a galaxy s 5... And it is very fast and no stutters at all.

And I had a S5 that I used for a while before trading it for a M8. (Had the S2, S3 and S4 also , so not a samsung hater. But touchwiz has always lagged.)
Of course after rooting, debloating, ect. the phone runs fine. But were discussing stock here.
If your running stock touchwiz and not having lag, your the only person I know who has gotten that lucky.

Upgrading soon

So y upgrade is coming up 8/1/14 and I'm looking at New devices.
I don't want a Samsung device. Too expensive. I have the HTC m7 on Sprint. I'm looking at the LG G3 due to the camera, design and performance. I like the HTC for its speakers mainly.
Is the G3 worth the money?

What exactly do you mean by lag, the boom sound speakers I'm a man but don't use them as often as I thought I would ever use it is for about 10 minutes a day

Don't buy it for performance, you might be dissapointed unless you are okay with it. Camera and design superb.

Btw: Is it worth the money? definitely yes. At least in my country its €150 cheaper then the S5 and M8.
I currently have a S5 but the G3 looks so *** gorgeous.
But i'm afraid the qFHD screen is a bit too heavy for the battery (although i read many mixed comments about the battery life).
Jdidnt LG presentation say it was a smart chip that adjusted the power according to use? I assumed that helped battery life even with the screen resolution.
Well the phone is $99 here in my location for me. The m8 is 200 and note 3 are 250

Yea. Might switch my family plan to a fRamily plan to get annual upgrades and jazz
Switching
I have currently the iPhone 5 and thinking about switching to the LG G3 but now I'm hearing about the g3 being a little leggy meaning that when your pressing and app you have to touch it twice or three times to open it that scares me a little bit.
